David Gilmour celebrates third solo Number 1 album with Luck And Strange

David Gilmour celebrates his third solo Number 1 album in the UK with Luck And Strange. 

The Pink Floyd guitarist, singer and songwriter’s fifth studio collection now joins On An Island (2006) and Rattle That Lock (2015) in a trio of solo chart-toppers. Gilmour has also enjoyed Albums Chart success with 1978 self-titled debut David Gilmour (17), 1984’s About Face (21), 2008 release Live in Gdansk (10), his 2010 collaborative record with The Orb Metallic Spheres (12) and 2017’s Live At Pompeii (3). 

Luck And Strange also tops the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, this week’s most popular release on wax. 

Speaking exclusively to Official Charts, David Gilmour says: 

“I’d like to thank everyone who’s bought my new album, Luck And Strange, and helped to make it Number 1 in the Official Albums Chart.”

As a member of Pink Floyd, Gilmour boasts a further six Number 1 LPs: Atom Heart Mother (1970), Wish You Were Here (1975), The Final Cut (1983), The Division Bell (1994), Pulse (1995) and The Endless River (2014). 

Sabrina Carpenter’s sixth studio collection Short n’ Sweet shows its staying power with a third consecutive week inside the Top 5 (2), as Oasis mania roars on, with the band occupying three Top 5 positions: Time Flies… (1994-2009) (3), Definitely Maybe (4) and (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? (5).

Balham-born producer, singer and songwriter Fred again.. secures a second Top 10 album this week with ten days (7), joining 2022’s Actual Life 3 (January 1-September 9 2022) (4). 

As they return with a new line-up, Linkin Park’s 2024 hits collection Papercuts rebounds 18 back into the Top 10 (8). 

Last week, the rock group revealed new members Emily Armstrong (as co-vocalist) and Colin Brittain (as drummer), as they announced their first new material since the death of former lead vocalist Chester Bennington in 2017. 

English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rex Orange County, born Alexander James O’Connor, scores a third Top 40 LP with The Alexander Technique (15), having previously seen success with 2019’s Pony (5) and 2022 release WHO CARES? (1). 

South London group Fat Dog, made up of Joe Love, Johnny ‘Doghead’ Hutch, Chris Hughes, Morgan Wallace and Jacqui Wheeler, make their Official Albums Chart debut with first full-length collection WOOF. this week (16). WOOF. also tops the Official Record Store Chart, the best-selling album of the past seven days in UK independent record shops. 

London-formed new wave band The The are back with Ensoulment, their first collection of new material in 25 years and sixth Top 40 record across a career spanning 42 years (19). 

Following the release of a 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition, Ultravox’s 1984 record Lament returns to the Top 40 for the first time in as many years, rebounding to Number 35. The British new wave outfit’s seventh studio album peaked at Number 8 on its original release. 

And finally, Leeds four-piece English Teacher see their debut LP This Could Be Texas back in the Top 40 following its 2024 Mercury Prize Album of the Year win last week (40). The first record from Lily Fontaine, Lewis Whiting, Douglas Frost and Nicholas Eden peaked at Number 8 on its release in April of this year.
