David Bowie's Blackstar becomes his first Number 1 album in America
David Bowie's new album Blackstar has debuted at Number 1 in America, becoming his first chart-topping record in the country.
The star's final album, released just two days before his death on 10 January, shifted 174,000 copies in its first week on sale. This makes Blackstar the fastest-selling release of Bowie's career since US electronic chart stats began in 1991, selling more than double previous set The Next Day achieved in its first week.
Nine more Bowie albums made a showing in the Billboard 200, with two of them making the Top 40 – Best Of Bowie (4) and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (21).

Bowie's previous best on the US album chart was Number 2 with 2013's The Next Day. He's also made the Top 10 eight other times: 1974's Diamond Dogs (5), David Live from 1974 (8), 1975's Young Americans (9), from 1976 Station To Station (3) and ChangesOneBowie (10) and then 1983's Let's Dance (4).
Although not released posthumously, Blackstar is the first album to reach Number 1 on the US album chart after an artist's death since Michael Jackson's This Is It soundtrack in 2009.
