Daft Punk groove their way to first ever UK Number 1 with Get Lucky
‘Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya, Daft Punk?’
The French robots, with a little help from Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, groove their way to their first ever Official UK Number 1. And it's a big one.
Pictured with their Official Number 1 Award from the Official Charts Company, French electronic duo Daft Punk AKA Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo have scored a personal best with Get Lucky – the lead single from possibly the most anticipated new record of 2013 - Random Access Memories - their upcoming fourth album.
Featuring the guest vocals of N.E.R.D’s Pharrell Williams and Chic’s founding funk master, Nile Rodgers, on guitar, Get Lucky entered at Number 3 last Sunday after just 48 hours on sale, and the momentum has not waned since. Racking up massive sales this week of over 155,000, Get Lucky topples Rudimental’s Waiting All Night to score the biggest one-week sales tally of the year.
In a little over a week, Get Lucky has already become the third biggest hit of Daft Punk’s career, behind 2000’s One More Time and 1997’s Around The World.
Daft Punk today commented “Lucky to have a #1!”
Meanwhile, Nile Rodgers, the ‘70s disco icon, and all round unsung hero of music, having found collaborative success with everyone from David Bowie, Madonna, Diana Ross and Duran Duran, to name but a few, is delighted to have scored his sixth Number 1 record in the UK. He told OfficialCharts.com: "I am so honoured and completely blown away. It's an amazing thing to have happen, really cool. Whenever you work on music, whenever you write or produce, whatever I do, I always try and do the very best I can. The relationship between myself and Daft Punk was just so unbelievably right. So, the fact that it has gone to Number 1 is humbling. It is extraordinary."
Daft Punk become only the sixth French act in history, including Serge Gainsbourg, Modjo, Charles Aznavour, Mr Oizo and David Guetta to have reached the top spot in the UK Official Singles Chart’s 60+ year history. The duo’s previous best position was the Number 2 slot with One More Time in 2000.
Meanwhile, Will.I.Am’s #ThatPower FT Justin Bieber slips one place to Number 3, and Calvin Harris’ I Need Your Love FT Ellie Goulding climbs from 7 to 4. Harris recently became the first artist in history to clock up eight Top 10 singles from one album, beating Michael Jackson’s previous record of seven.
Britain’s Got Talent 2012 finalists Loveable Rogues – fresh from their Olly Murs support slot – score a debut Top 10 hit with What A Night (9).
New entries and high climbers
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis climb seven places into the Top 5 with Can’t Hold Us, the follow up to 2013’s biggest selling single to date, Thrift Shop. While UK singer/songwriter Passenger shoot 33 places to Number 11 with Let Her Go and David Guetta FT Ne-Yo and Akon are up 57 spots to 21 with Play Hard.
Finally, Like Home is a new entry from Nicky Romero & Nervo (33), Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris leaps 141 places back into the Top 40 at Number 39 and Amelia Lily bags herself a third Top 40 hit in a row with Party Over (40).
