Chris Brown turns it up to Number 1!
Chris Brown today makes it all the way to the Number 1 spot on the Official Singles Chart, and in doing so scores the highest charting single of his career in the UK.
Turn Up The Music, the new single taken from forthcoming fifth studio album Fortune, fires to the summit today by a clear margin of 24,000 copies. The Number 1 position is a personal best for Brown here in the UK, his previous highest chart placing to date as a lead artist was Number 2 with debut single Run It!, back in 2006. See his full Official Charts history here.
The track caused a flurry of media controversy when a remix featuring ex-girlfriend Rihanna who Brown split from in 2009 following allegations of domestic violence, appeared online last month. There are currently no plans to release the Rihanna remix of Turn Up The Music.
Pop/dancehall star Sean Paul holds steady at Number 2 for a second week running with She Doesn’t Mind, while Nicki Minaj’s Starships climbs back up two places to Number 3. Last week’s chart topper Katy Perry’s Part Of Me slips three place to Number 4, with Gotye FT Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used To Know taking up fifth place.
New entries
London rapper Plan B (AKA Ben Drew) is back with the critically-acclaimed Ill Manors single (6), the first taster of his hotly anticipated, third studio record of the same name, due for release May 14.
Ill Manors is a radical departure from Plan B's 2010 Number 1 concept album, The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, and will see the star return to his rap roots to tackle real-life social issues.
”Since the riots happened I haven't heard enough people within the public sector asking the two most important questions; 'Why did it happen and how can we prevent it from happening again?',” explains Plan B. “I do have a theory as to why and how but first I need to make my point. And I’ve chosen satire to do so.
“The point being made in my song Ill Manors is that society needs to take some responsibility for the cause of these riots,” he adds. “Why are there so many kids in this country that don't feel they have a future, or care about having a criminal record?”
The only other new entry in today’s Official Singles Chart Top 40 is B Traits whose debut single and rave anthem, Fever, features guest vocalist Elisabeth Troy, the track lands at Number 36 today.
