All good things come to an end – even Cher's record-breaking recording career. Well, maybe.

The pop goddess, 78, has said her next album will "probably" be her last. But if it does turn out to be her swansong, it sounds as though she'll be bowing out in style.

Speaking at a Q&A event in London to promote Cher: The Memoir: Part One, she told the audience: "This is probably my last album that I’m gonna do.

"I'm really excited," she added. "They are great songs and I’m just really excited that I’m doing it."

As The Sun reports, Cher also told the audience with her trademark self-deprecation: "I'm older than dirt now, OK? I’m the oldest person I meet in almost every room unless I’m in an old folks' home.

"I keep having to tell these [younger] girls like, 'Get over yourself, get out there. You've got your whole life ahead of you.'"

MORE: Where every Cher album and song has charted in the UK

Cher's most recent studio album, the festive collection Christmas, peaked at Number 5 last year.

Its lead single, the seasonal dance banger DJ Play a Christmas Song, climbed to Number 18 to become Cher's highest-charting song in 22 years.

In the process, Cher made history by becoming the first solo artist to achieve a Top 40 hit with new material on the Official Singles Chart across seven consecutive decades.

This year, she has released a new version of DJ Play a Christmas Song featuring Kelly Clarkson. Could we see the song return to the Official Single Chart in the run-up to Christmas?

To date, Cher has scored 11 Top 10 albums and 15 Top 10 singles in the UK. Given her incredible longevity, few would bet against her adding to these tallies in the future.
