Charli XCX teases Sam Smith collab in Speed Drive music video

The two artists were recently featured on Barbie: The Album.

These Barbies (might) be collaborating! In the music video for Charli XCX's latest single, the frantic Speed Drive, she appears to heavily hint at an upcoming new single with none other than Sam Smith.

How do we know this? Well, Charli, baby has made it very easy for us.

The Speed Drive video hits the emergency stop (about 30 seconds in) to accommodate a little skit, where Charli answers a video call from Sam (sporting a very fetching moustache, it has to be said).

"Did you have a chance to listen to the new mix, babe?" Sam asks her, and we assume they're not talking about the mix to Speed Drive.

Charli admits that, no, she hasn't listened to the latest mix yet, because she's on the set of a music video (working girl!), to which Sam tells her she probably needs to listen to it soon "because we need to submit it to get it out."

Now, call us Poirot, but we think something's up there...

For what it's worth, we do know that Charli is currently working on the follow-up to Crash, which became her first-ever UK Number 1 album last year. She's also signed a mysterious new record deal for two albums, although we still have no confirmation as to which label she's inked a deal with (Barbie: The Album is being issued through Atlantic, who Charli was previously signed to throughout her entire career, but completed her contract with Crash. Sam themselves is signed to Capitol, a UMG imprint).

Charli's blatant MO with Crash was to once again play the big pop girl game, and Speed Drive has definitely picked up where that era left off - it became Charli's first solo UK Top 10 single in nearly 10 years the other week, peaking at Number 9 on the Official Singles Chart.

Of course, Barbie: The Album is also a connecting factor here, given that Sam was also placed on the soundtrack with their dramatic Man I Am.

Sam's last UK Number 1 single, Unholy, was another team up with a pop girlie, Kim Petras. It topped the Official SIngles Chart fo ra straight month, and was named one of the biggest tracks of 2022 by Official Charts.
