Chaka Khan's most-streamed songs in the UK revealed
We're wishing a happy birthday to the great Chaka Khan today (March 23) as the Queen of Funk turns 68.
With a career spanning over five decades, Chaka broke through initially in the 1970s as the lead vocalist for funk band Rufus, before going solo.
As it stands, Chaka has accumulated one UK Number 1 single in her time (1984's I Feel For You) and a further two iconic Top 10 hits. To boot, five of her solo albums have charted in the UK, with the most recent, 2019's Hello Happiness becoming her first Top 40 album in 30 years.
We're featuring the full Top 10, but here's a closer look at her Top 4 most streamed hits in the UK - the most popular songs of her career that have stood the test of time in the modern era.
4. Like Sugar
Total UK streams: 9.77 million
The most popular song from Chaka's comeback album Hello Happiness, Like Sugar has the distinction of being a later-career highlight, with streams of 9 million. Its colourful visual is also Chaka's most streamed music video of her career with British fans.
3. I Feel For You
Total UK streams: 17.65 million
Originally written and performed by Prince, Chaka took control of a funked-up remix featuring a rap verse by Melle Mel from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and kickstarted her career. Her only UK Number 1, its UK combined audio & video streams in excess of 17.6 million put it in a comfortable third place.
2. I'm Every Woman
Total UK streams: 22.56 million
Now most well known for its cover by the late, great Whitney Houston on The Bodyguard soundtrack, I'm Every Woman is actually a Chaka original. Despite being out-peaked by Whitney (Chaka got to Number 8, Whitney got to Number 4) the song remains a stone-cold classic no matter what version you choose to listen to. With streams totally over 22 million, it's Chaka's second-most played song on streaming platforms in the UK.
1. Ain't Nobody (with Rufus or solo)
Total UK streams: 50.35 million
Of course, it had to be Chaka's signature song. A dance classic, first released with her funk outfit Rufus in 1984 but then as a solo offering in later years, Ain't Nobody remains a gold standard pop record that's lost none of its innate joy.
Peaking at Number 6 in 1989 after it was remixed on the Official Singles Chart in 1984, it's been covered countless times, notably as Being Nobody by Richard X and Liberty X for their famous rip, a Number 3 hit in 2003, and German Felix Jaehn, whose updated version with vocalist Jasmine Thompson reached Number 2 in 2015.
