Can Wales turn rugby victory into a chart topper?
Wales took home the Six Nations trophy on Saturday, but can the team do the unusual double by turning a rugby victory into a chart topper?
Following their 16-9 victory against France this past Saturday (March 17) at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, Wales took home the Six Nations trophy. But can the team do the unusual double by turning a rugby victory into a chart topper?
Welsh singer Paul Child is certainly hoping so. The Bridgend-born performer recorded his latest release, Bread Of Heaven (Cwm Rhondda), during the half-time interval at the sold out match on Saturday, using the 74,000 capacity crowd as backing singers. If everyone who attended the match purchased a copy, it could potentially place the cover of John Hughes’ 1907 hymn in the Top 5 of the Official Singles Chart this Sunday.
“It’s an idea which came about because we wanted to get as many fans involved with the single as possible and Bread Of Heaven is famously sung on the terraces and throughout the stands so what better song to choose as the Grand Slam single,” Child told The Western Mail. “But ultimately it’s a celebration of this year’s tournament. It’s a way for fans to thank the team, letting them know how grateful we all are and how proud we are to get behind them.”
The track is available as a digital download now, with physical copies on sale in branches of Tesco in Wales. All proceeds from the single will be donated to the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.
