Britney Spears says a new song "in the works" following end of conservatorship battle

It would be her first release since 2016's Glory, and the first song released since her conservatorship was terminated earlier this year.

Britney Spears has apparently confirmed that she is working on new music following on from the end of her controversial conservatorship battle this year.

The pop idol has not released any material since her last album, Glory, in 2016. Following that album's release, Britney's life under a conservatorship controlled by her family became the subject of worldwide debate.

This year - following years of pushbacks and stalemates - the conservatorship was terminated, meaning that Britney now has full control over her estate and career for the first time since 2008.

Posting to Instagram last night, Britney posted a clip of her belting runs to the mirror in her home, whilst also hinting that she could be making a return to the pop scene.

"Pssss new song in the works," she wrote at the bottom of the post. "I'll let you know what I mean!"

Since her debut at the turn of the century with her iconic debut single ...Baby One More Time, Britney has become one of the most famous and recognisable pop stars of her lifetime.

In the UK alone, she has achieved six Number 1 singles (...Baby, Born To Make You Happy, Oops! I Did It Again, Toxic, Everytime and Scream & Shout with will.i.am).

This makes Britney one of the acts with the most Number 1 singles on the UK charts, sharing six chart-toppers along with the likes of Lady Gaga, Drake and Queen.

To mark 2021's National Album Day, Britney was also recognised as the ninth best-selling female artist in the UK of the 21st century so far, one spot ahead of Lady Gaga.
