The currently untitled film is being produced by film studio MGM.
Boy George is the latest musician getting the movie biopic treatment.
Film studio MGM has announced it is developing a movie based on the life of the Culture Club singer, with Sacha Gervasi named as writer and director. His previous work includes Hitchcock, the biographical drama based on Alfred Hitchcock, and rock documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil. Boy George and Jessica de Rothschild will executive produce.
The film, first reported by Deadline, will show the singer's journey from being raised in an Irish working-class family to becoming the leader of Culture Club and one of the most prominent figures in the New Romantic movement.
Culture Club scored two Number 1 singles and a further ten Top 40 hits on the Official Singles Chart, while their global impact saw them shift 100 million singles and 50 million albums worldwide. View Culture Club's full Official Chart history.
Boy George interview: "I don't want to get bland"
“There is no filmmaker better suited than Sacha Gervasi to tell George’s confessional story with the irreverence and emotion it deserves,” said MGM Motion Picture Group president Jonathan Glickman. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with both of them to bring this remarkably honest and wildly entertaining tale to audiences around the world."
The Boy George film is the latest in a series of biopic announcements: MGM are also developing an Aretha Franklin movie starring Jennifer Hudson, while Celine Dion biopic titled The Power of Love will be released in 2020.
The film's follow the success of Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and Elton John's Rocketman.
