Ariana Grande scoops a sixth week at Number 1 with Positions following extremely close chart race
Ariana Grande has held her own on the Official Singles Chart, landing a sixth consecutive week at the top with Positions following a strong challenge for Number 1 from Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You.
Positions now matches Ariana’s previous best Number 1 stint with Thank U, Next which earned six consecutive weeks at the top between November-December 2018.
This means that Mariah Carey’s festive staple finishes at Number 2, zooming up twelve places on last week. With a further three weeks to go until Christmas, there’s still plenty of opportunity for the song to reach the top of the UK Official Chart for the first time. See Mariah and Ariana team up with Jennifer Hudson for a powerhouse Oh Santa remix.
Meanwhile, Last Christmas by Wham also sees a huge uplift this week, flying 17 places to Number 3. Miley Cyrus returns to the Top 5 with Midnight Sky, climbing two spots to 5 following the release of her latest album Plastic Hearts, and The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale of New York zooms 18 places to Number 8.

Liam Gallagher claims the highest new entry on this week’s chart with his brand-new single All You’re Dreaming Of at Number 35 - Liam’s fourth solo Top 40 single. Proceeds of the track are going to the charity Action For Children, who protect and support vulnerable children and young people across the country.

"Didn't John & Yoko have equal billing on that single?"
"Yeah, but she's only a woman. And Japanese. Edit her out. No one'll notice."

Should’ve been Mariah. :/

I’m not fussed either way who’s number one but surely this restrictive ACR rule for old songs should be scrapped. The streaming figures should be the same as any other song, new or old. Doesn’t seem fair otherwise.

I totally agree, the fact is Mariah would of been #1 in 2018 & 2019 without ACR! at Christmas time/week on streams it just the download & sales needed to be higher at the time, but so far it been amazing spec so far with downloads, as this week #4 with All I Want For Christmas with very high streams, and Ariana Grande was #30 with positions on Sales
David Eve
Without ACR, Positions probably drops to at least 4 with Mariah, Wham and the Pogues definitely above her and possibly more Xmas fare. Of course it is unclear how much of the Xmas streams is just passive listening due to someone selecting a christmas music playlist or asking Alexa, Siri etc for christmas songs
David Eve
OK, Music Week's column says Positions drops to 8 with Christmas songs above it due to ACR! Ariana's Santa Tell Me is 'outselling' Positions (without ACR).

Hardly believe the amazing MARIAH didn't make it to the Top spot!! We have to "endure" the awful new single from Ariana at number 1: her single is so boring!!!!

There's still time because the power of Xmas looms large..then again she 'll probably do it with Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson and sort of stop her...then again I am awaiting a certain sausage(come on I have pigs in nlankets at Xmas). Either way half the chart is already festive so bring it on.
GS
MARIAH MUST GET HER THIRD NUMBER 1!!! Ari has spent more than enough weeks at number 1
Andrew
Hmmm, I'm not one of those that are longing for Mariah to be No.1, but it all seems a bit fishy to me. We can only take the O.C.Cs word for it every week/year that the charts are a true reflection of what has been bought or streamed.

They have a 3 songs per artist rule, but its strange how 4 justin bieber songs made the top 100 this week, isnt it?

I imagine they will argue the Shaun Mendes track doesn't count, but bearing in mind they both co-wrote and perform it, it clearly should. They've never sorted the rules out properly, and quite a few artists have hit 4 or 5 with very questionable duet/featurings, whilst names that should be taken into account are often omitted - take Beyonce giving Perfect a huge boost, Ariana giving Good as a shot in the arm and so on, but not getting credit/impacting their other entries. Also right back to Greatest Showman being limited to 3 songs but those from Black Panther soundtrack not being regulated. The problem is twofold, one) they've made so many rules it's impossible for them to track and enforce them easily, and more importantly two) it wants so desperately to tie in with the BBC (and Now! series, the Brits etc), and appeal primarily to the younger end of Radio 1's 15-29 demographic, that it has fixed the charts to try and keep itself relevant to them. A crying shame as they lack identity, arer dominated by what I imgine is background music to people, and doesn't remotely reflect the country. The sales charts with NHS, Memorial Day etc tracks featuring throughout is a much truer reflection and should be the main chart featured. I hope Mariah, Wham! or anyone clear up and get the next month at number one. Of course expect a rule change next year to stop it happening again if so.
