It's the dawn of a new day, and it's all change on the Official Singles Chart as Alex Warren has just overtaken Chappell Roan in the race for the UK's Number 1 single.
Ever since Sunday's Official Chart: First Look, Chappell has seemed to be on lock to replace herself at Number 1 with her brand-new country-pop banger The Giver, but now we have a severe upstart thanks to rising US singer-songwriter Alex Warren.
Ordinary is the latest track to be released from Alex (who first rose to fame as TikTok star as part of the 'Hype House,' before pivoting to a music career), who is on something of a hot streak since his material caught fire last year.
Just a few weeks ago, the booming, chamber pop ballad (which nods to the stately styles of both Hozier and Florence + The Machine) became his first single to enter the UK Top 10, and now it could go all the way.
At the time of writing, Ordinary now stands atop the Official Singles Chart and, with less than two days full tracking until the race ends, the gap is closing for Chappell to catch up.
According to Official Charts Company data, little under 600 chart units currently stand between Alex and Chappell and the top spot, meaning we could be in for a photo-finish end to this week's chart race.
Alex Warren has certainly put in the work for this crowning moment of his career so far. He only made his debut on the Official Singles Chart last year (his first ever single to reach the Official Chart, Before You Leave Me, peaked at Number 80 in May 2024) and by the close of last year, he'd netted two Top 40 hits; Carry You Home (23) and Burning Down (33).
Ordinary is his first release of the new year, and the biggest prospective hit from his upcoming debut studio album. It debuted at Number 7 on February 14 2025, before reaching it's highest peak yet of Number 2 last week.
As for Chappell, she's spent the last fortnight at Number 1 in the UK with her dizzyingly epic synth-pop anthem Pink Pony Club, which marked her first-ever chart-topping hit, after an enviable breakout year in 2024, where she sent Good Luck, Babe! all the way to Number 2, and scored a third UK Top 10 hit with the camp HOT TO GO! - taken from her chart-topping debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - which peaked at Number 4.
The Giver will be the second single from Chappell's forthcoming second studio album. It's set to include Good Luck, Babe! and fan-favourite unreleased track The Subway, which she performed on her tour last year.
Keep your eyes peeled on Official Charts and our socials for updates on this week's Number 1 single race. The winner will be revealed live by Jack Saunders on the Official Chart Show on BBC Radio 1 at 5:45pm on Friday (March 21).
