Who is Brian May?

Brian May is the lead guitarist of iconic British rock band Queen, the band he founded alongside singer Freddie Mercury, drummer Roger Taylor and Roger Deacon

Born 19 July 1947, songwriter, producer, animal welfare activist and astrophysicist Brian May formed Queen in 1970, embarking on a career in the band that achieved six Number 1 singles and ten Number 1 albums. Queen's Greatest Hits is the best-selling album of all time. Queen songs written by Brian May himself include hits such as We Will Rock You, I Want It All, Fat Bottomed Girls, Who Wants to Live Forever, The Show Must Go On and many more.

Prior to Queen, in 1968 Brian May formed the band Smile with Tim Staffell as the lead singer and bassist, and later, drummer Roger Taylor, who also went on to play for Queen. The group lasted for two years, from 1968 to 1970, they also reunited in 1992.

From 1983 onwards Brian May earned a string of Top 40 singles and albums as a solo artist, his highest-charting song was 1992's Too Much Love Will Kill You, while 20 years later a feature spot on Rockstar - a collaboration with N-Dubz's Dappy - reached Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart.

In 2007, May earned a PhD degree in astrophysics from Imperial College London.
