IMOGEN HEAP

Who is Imogen Heap?

Imogen Heap, born 9 December 1977 in Romford, East London, is a British alt-pop pioneer. An acclaimed singer, songwriter and record producer, Heap began writing songs age 13 having classically trained in piano, cello and clarinet, she also taught herself music production.

Imogen Heap's first chart appearance was in 1999 featuring on Urban Species' track Blanket, while Heap's first outing on the Official Albums Chart came in the form of 2009's Ellipse.

In January 2025 Imogen Heap marked an extraordinary career first, claiming her first-ever UK Top 40 entry on the Official Singles Chart as a solo artist with her track Headlock (37). Originally included in her 2005 LP Speak For Yourself, the track’s resurgence was thanks to its inclusion in the 2024 psychological horror game Mouthwashing.

Heap’s uncredited vocals were also previously used as the hook on Jason Derulo’s 2009 Top 3 single Whatcha Say, which used a sample of her 2005 track Hide and Seek. Image: Imogen Heap / press
