There seems an overabundance of angst in some quarters on reading the various posts this week, particularly as to how the Charts are compiled. So, let’s be non-serious for a mo. Life’s far too short to reside within a baffling bubble of bewilderment.

Happy 68th Birthday to Madonna today (16th August). No longer a Material Girl, more a Somewhat More Mature Lady Growing Older a Tad Disgracefully (allegedly), and good on her.

When adding Kylie into the mix, we come up with a combined age of 126 years. Okay then, so a great pity that their recent collaboration on Love Sensation couldn’t have been a fraction more formidable or memorable. Sadly, the sound quality projects the general ambience of it having been recorded and mixed, in haste, in a public toilet somewhere; one far from salubrious. Maybe that was the overall intention – water closet music desiring to become flushed with success - though considering the talent involved, quite disappointing.

Whilst talking numbers; the collective ages of the three remaining Rolling Stones give us a staggering 244 years. Yikes. And I’m not taking the Mick.

Out of sheer devilment, and just by way of idle comparing, the joint age of our dear chums, Sam and Olivia, is 59 years. Oh, to be sooooo young – and forever at Number One. Für immer und ewig.

Aren’t statistics wonderful?

The charts have become boring for years now, and it needs to become interesting again. Songs never used to stick around for years, so here's my suggestion...A song only counts towards the chart when it has been listened to for the FIRST time, after that it doesn't count towards the chart. This would stop the songs that streaming platforms throw at people constantly charting, and would refresh the charts with some new artists that would never normally chart. It might just get back to the old days, when people looked forward to listening or looking at the charts. I think we ought to start some sort of petition, for this or something similar to happen.

The chart rules need changing. Here is my proposal:

The Official Singles Chart ranks the UK’s 100 biggest current tracks. A recording may spend a maximum of 30 cumulative weeks in the Top 100. After its 30th chart week it graduates to the Official Catalogue Chart. No performer may occupy more than three positions in a weekly Singles Chart; all lead, joint and featured artist credits count toward that limit.

I think there needs to be some ability for older songs to have a run many years later for a shared cultural reason (film, advert, viral trend, etc.) or when someone dies - it's always been like that. But yes, there do seem to be rather a lot of them at the moment despite them generally dying off relatively quickly. The newer ones hanging around FOREVER feels like a bigger problem tbh. Although be careful what you wish for as fantastic tracks having a two week chart history in the 90s was also awful.

The biggest problem I see is that, despite quite rightly resisting the absurdity that is airplay being included ...we've sort of ended up with the same thing anyway in curated playlists and algorithm-suggested listens. Maybe those just shouldn't count? It needs to be a chart of the tracks people actively choose to listen to, rather than the tracks that are pushed on them by other agendas.

Hey, Rein Me In is at #1 again to no avail lol. Still suprised but I guess the British public really DO love that song

And Love Sensation is #8! Pretty solid

I believe that ACR/SCR is the reason for this forever number 1. It promotes favoritism what the vote charts do when they have ACR/SCR is +5 the votes behind the scenes for modern artists and -5 votes the older veterans thats why many vote charts has since scrapped it.

As for statistic charts the favoritism towards modern bands tracks is still on it like the +5 system but they are probably going +5000000 votes on this towards Rein Me In retaining so that they also break 16 weeks conservative on top of extending the non concentrative record whilst they are doing it.

Everyone should know how charts have been getting away with ACR/SCR for all these years and who it actually favors ACR/SCR is a cheating game where it benefits that particular chart with the bands they want in their Top 10s.

ACR/SCR isn't about what we are listening to at all it's about favoritism so the chart can fictionize a Top 10 they themselves wants to with +5000000 units rather than +5 votes.

The real Kantar Official Charts Company Chart is what you see up top in Audio Streaming, Video Streaming, Physical Sales and Downloads Sales.

If you don't see what's the highest units in any of them appear as the highest units in next weeks main chart then it shows us how fixed in favoritism ACR/SCR Rules is and they must be scrapped to get legitimacy back and the more of us actually moan about the secret fix jobs within SCR/SCR Kantar themselves would have to say no more we have been ratted by the people in the knowhow of what ACR/SCR is really there for.

I successfully ratted out one of my favorite vote charts for using +5 -5 just to boost up Creative and Dreams tracks and they scrapped the rule the following week after a little moan over the air for getting busted on it now they are getting some non C&D number ones and they are better for no longer fixing record labels to win.

We have to win the case against ACR/SCR on K-OCC as well because they are probably worse offenders than +5 because they put tracks in their pool Top 10 that are 5 million + which means to keep Rein Me In up there on purpose thye are probably adding their own 5 million + units.

Great to see Madonna and Kylie with their names in the top 10 again, especially as a collaboration, but I don't find it at all listenable. As a fan of both, I hope this can finally put an end to the silly bickering on here.

Acr is meant to keep Mr brightside, out of the top 40 but because it's slightly increase a spofity and apple streaming with iTunes downloads. And other songs ahead falling onto acr and falling behind it is the reason it's still in and I aren't complaining.

I can’t say I’m thrilled about ‘Movin’ To The Sun’ getting this big after discovering that it was originally an AI concept before being reworked by Hugel.

Certainly not the worst usage of it we’ve had in the charts, but the fact that a song made in this way has become a Top 5 hit isn’t a promising sign.

Ugh, guess that's another song I'll have to avoid.

But you're right, it's better than the entire song being AI generated or something

Lets hope that it doesn't increase again towards the 3rd week when declining because if it does to avoid acr again then something may seem off.

LOL During the radio 1 chart show today when Jack Saunders spun the wheel for a randomly selected number one it picked cocomelon's wheels on the bus. Personally i would rather have that at number one then f*ck me in. XD

P

I heard that spin and was like what the f#ck. How on earth did that even chart?

It didn't. Jack just chooses any song in the history of music regardless of whether it charted or not.

It’s a shame that FLO don’t have songs on the chart this week. They’re such a talented girl group and their debut album feels both nostalgic of early 2000s pop and R&B, yet fresh at the same time.

T

1

Totally agree. They're so underrated.

What are your favourite songs of theirs?

P

I didn't realise that free your mind and talk to you both also fell onto acr.

daamn, Talk To You deserved more top 10 time

We actually have a decent number of songs going on ACR this week, although I think ‘Material Lover’, ‘Talk To You’ and ‘Free Your Mind’ all got took out a bit too soon in my opinion.

I’m also baffled that ‘Ordinary’ is back in the Top 20 once again. How are people still not tired of it?

P

Perter98

2

Yeah how are people not tired of ordinary yet.

Alex's music is hit or miss for me, but 'Ordinary' is still one of his worst songs to date imo.

3

For anyone wondering, ‘Espresso’ returned to the Top 40 because of a new vinyl edition to celebrate its two-year anniversary.

I remember it being one of my favourite summer hits of 2024 and it remains a very fun song from Sabrina to this day.

I

Thank you for the information.

I liked the song in 2024 but after two years and 68 weeks on the charts I'm a little fed up...

Congratulations to Madonna on her highest singles chart entry in almost 17 years! ‘Love Sensation’ was already one of my favourite tracks from ‘Confessions II’ and I think Kylie is a really good fit here.

I know their fanbases haven’t exactly seen eye to eye on this website, so hopefully this will finally bring some peace between them. They’re both iconic popstars at the end of the day.
