Can Guy Mitchell suddenly re-appear again with 'Look At That Girl' to stop 'Rein Me In' making 19 weeks at Number One?  Unlikely - or Eddie Fisher or Mantovani - Taylor Swift or The Beatles maybe? Don't think so...

O

Officialchartssuck

1

TO EVERYBODY WHO WANTS THE CHART TO BE BASED SOLELY ON SALES: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. A SALES-ONLY CHART COULD END UP BEING FLOODED WITH AI SLOP, BECAUSE IT'S FAR EASIER TO MANIPULATE SMALL SALES TOTALS THAN A CHART THAT ALSO FACTORS IN GENUINE LISTENING THROUGH STREAMING.

Rein Me In is still #1? After all this time? How is this even possible!?

And Dai Dai is at #2 I suppose, but blame the World Cup Fever. In a few weeks it will either be low on or off of the charts

P

Perter98

0

Well according to the video that shows the top 10's sales. Rein me in this week is 5,451 sales down from last week.

Also the chance that next week wonderwall might end up falling onto acr.

avatar

ImaPlank

1

Let's not forget that Sam & Olivia's song is mainly streaming and is not in the same league as Frankie Laine & Bryan Adams which were on pure sales alone.  Had Sam & Olivia been on pure sales it would only have spent 2-3 weeks at no.1.  Comparing streams to physical sales is like comparing a Mini with a Ferrari.  The charts incorporated streaming from 2014 but the physical sales chart continued separately.  This is where a real comparison should be made.  Unfortunately for Sam & Olivia they get nowhere near the record.

P

Perter98

0

So songs need over an 25% increase from combined physical copies, streaming and downloads over the amount they were set onto acr to get off it? So for example if a song went onto acr with 80k sales points. To get off acr it has to get over 100k sales points? 🤨

P

Perter98

1

After some checks apparently Mr brightside at 37 is actually more impressive because it barely has any youtube streams behind it. It is all pretty much just spotify and apple streaming. It would like need possibly need to jump towards anywhere between 250k to 300k YouTube music streams to possibly get over the 25% to get off acr with a few couple hundreds more iTunes downloads than normal.

O

Officialchartssuck

1

Even if Sam and Olivia break the all time record next week they will only hold it for a few years because Wham! Will most likely break it after a few more Christmases.

Drake really had been thankfully hurt by acr one song at 71 and the other 2 fallen out with no replacements.

Good thing no terrible rap song from future that I have seen in the top 100 us billboard haven't entered over here.

All these new terrible released raps song don't deserve to chart at all.

hey i’m very likely to leave this comments section or vastly reduce my posting soon. it’s gotten so mundane posting a list of songs i’ve been listening to under a different list of songs. when i was away for a week to see my chemical romance, that actually felt good. but ive been on this site since 2019 and my brain is just randomly wired to comment. and its hard when im so wired but i wanna stop that habit. it’s not really fun anymore, especially as this site is pretty much unusable with all the unnecessary pop ups taking over my screen.

besides, i’m not a chart follower, i’m a music fan. if you wanna see some of my thoughts on new music, consider checking out my albumoftheyear profile. i’ve just uploaded reviews of the new charli xcx and the strokes albums. ones okay, the other is really bad coming from a band with a great discography.

Would somebody please consider launching this Change.org petition?

I'd really appreciate it if someone else in the chart community would be willing to start a Change.org petition, because I'm not planning to do it myself.

The petition would ask the Official Charts Company to modernize the UK Singles Chart and Official Albums Chart by separating current releases from catalogue releases.

The proposal would be:

  • From this year onward, only songs and albums released within the previous two calendar years should be eligible for the main Official Singles and Albums Charts. That means songs and albums released in 2024 or earlier would no longer be eligible for the main charts.
  • Instead, all songs and albums released in 2024 or earlier would move to two new permanent charts:
    • Official Legacy Singles Chart
    • Official Legacy Albums Chart
  • Beginning in 2027, the cut-off would move forward by one year, meaning songs and albums released in 2025 or earlier would move to the Legacy Charts. The eligibility window would continue to roll forward every year after that.
  • All greatest hits, best of, and compilation albums, regardless of when they were released, would always chart on the Official Legacy Albums Chart rather than the main albums chart.

The aim would not be to erase older music. Classic songs and albums deserve recognition and should continue to have official charts dedicated to them. Instead, the goal would be to ensure that the main UK charts primarily reflect the success of today's new releases while still celebrating catalogue music through dedicated legacy rankings.

The Official Charts Company already operates dozens of specialist charts alongside the main Singles and Albums Charts, so creating two additional Legacy Charts would fit within the existing chart ecosystem. Any change to chart eligibility would ultimately be a matter for the Official Charts Company and the Chart Supervisory Committee, which regularly review and approve the official chart rules.

If anyone genuinely supports this idea and has the time to organize it, please feel free to launch a Change.org petition yourself. I'm simply sharing the idea—I won't be creating or running the petition.

And if anybody does please give me the link.

Sorry but I don't agree with this all. Especially when an artist dies; their music needs to chart in the main chart so it's like a legacy and people can remember them.

M

Midlands

2

What a pathetic proposal.

The chart shows what people are listening to.

You knock out half of what people are listening to the chart would be meaningless.

Just because you don't like tracks from before 2024 doesn't mean they should be barred from charting.

Some of the greatest number ones of all time only made number one years after they were originally released.for instance....

Ben E King

The Hollies

Tammy Wynette

The Righteous Brothers

Should they have all been banned from charting?

O

Officialchartssuck

1

Well i suppose we can give an exemption for when an artist dies.

M

mrstarling

1

Good idea! What do you think about songs released past the cutoff date if they just started trending though? I think there should be a different rule for that.

avatar

ImaPlank

1

This is pathetic.  The whole idea of a chart is to be a list of songs that integrate sales/downloads and streaming in order of what's more popular.  By removing some songs and not others defeats the object of a chart.

Even the introduction of ACR made the singles chart into more of a manipulated tool for the music industry instead of actual sales/streaming figures in sales order.

we’re due a recurrency rule soon. there’s so many old songs and not enough new hits. i too really like the katy perry and michael jackson songs, but i feel like there’s not much change happening and not enough new talent recognised.

everyone’s talking about “oh there’s not enough new music”, if you actually DID care that much, angine de poitrine would be number 1, and underscores would be a main pop girl.

Maybe the old songs keep charting because the new songs are rubbish.  Why bring in new rules for old songs that are popular.  Do you want a chart that reflects what's being listened to or just some made up list to suit whoever's having a rant that week.

Good to see Shakira back in the Top 2 after all this time. As for Oasis, I thought ‘Wonderwall’ would fall a lot further than it did.

Speaking of which, congratulations to Spain on their World Cup win. They played remarkably well all tournament, while the behaviour of some of the Argentinian players and fans was truly disgraceful.

avatar

itsnoodleszn_

3

argentina should be banned from the next world cup. they were playing foul the whole game, and the fighting at full-time was absolutely disgusting. compare that to the england vs france game where following a really tight game, they all came together and showed support to one another despite one team winning over the other.

avatar

Unfortunately, I think they're hosting at least one of the group stage games.

The ending to the England v France game was indeed very wholesome, and it was a far more exciting match than the final.

I AM SO FED UP OF SEEING F*CK ME IN AT NUMBER 1 EVERY SINGLE WEEK! 18 WEEKS! EIGHTEEN! IT HAS NOW TIED FRANKIE LAINE'S 73-YEAR-OLD RECORD AND HONESTLY I JUST WANT SOMETHING, ANYTHING, TO FINALLY KNOCK IT OFF THE TOP.

EVERY FRIDAY IT FEELS LIKE THE SAME STORY. YOU TUNE IN HOPING FOR A NEW NUMBER 1, HOPING THAT A NEW ARTIST OR A NEW RELEASE HAS DONE ENOUGH, ONLY TO SEE REIN ME IN STILL SITTING THERE LIKE IT REFUSES TO LEAVE. THE CHART IS SUPPOSED TO BE EXCITING, UNPREDICTABLE AND FULL OF MOVEMENT, BUT RIGHT NOW IT FEELS LIKE WE'RE STUCK IN A LOOP.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, IT'S CLEARLY A HUGE HIT. YOU DON'T GET TO 18 WEEKS AT NUMBER 1 BY ACCIDENT. BUT THERE COMES A POINT WHERE YOU JUST WANT SOME VARIETY. THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY GREAT NEW SONGS RELEASED THIS YEAR THAT DESERVE THEIR MOMENT, YET THEY KEEP RUNNING INTO THE SAME BRICK WALL.

NOW WE'RE AT THE POINT WHERE THIS SONG HAS MATCHED ONE OF THE MOST LEGENDARY RECORDS IN BRITISH CHART HISTORY. A RECORD THAT STOOD FOR MORE THAN SEVEN DECADES. NEXT WEEK IT COULD BREAK IT ALTOGETHER, AND WHILE THAT'S AN INCREDIBLE ACHIEVEMENT, AS SOMEONE WHO FOLLOWS THE CHARTS EVERY WEEK, I'M JUST DESPERATE FOR A CHANGE.

NOT EVEN TO MENTION IT SHOULD'VE HAD 14 WEEKS AT THE TOP IF IT WAS ON ACR AND MAN I NEED WASN'T.

PLEASE... CAN WE HAVE A NEW NUMBER 1 NEXT WEEK??????????????????

D

Dave2023

What I find exciting is the possibility of a 70+ year record being broken.

Instead of a clearout to freshen things up, we have lots of older hits either gaining in the Top 40. I actually like most of the throwbacks that are there, but they’ve already had their moment.

The fact that there’s only two debuts again isn’t good for new music at all. Hopefully something changes here soon because this is the dullest I’ve seen the charts outside of Christmas in a long time.

avatar

Piran

3

I love seeing ‘Talk To You’ climb into the Top 3 and the new peak for ‘Free Your Mind’ alongside it.

Even if neither of them end up going to #1, they’re both set to be big summer dance anthems and that’s fantastic.

avatar

Piran

5

Crazy to think that when ‘Rein Me In’ first reached the top spot, we had nine different #1 singles in the space of 10 weeks.

It seems likely that it’ll break the record next week, but man, I really want to see a faster turnover at the summit again.

Barmily, this is only its 8th week ever in the Top 40, the first since New Year 2024 and only a second since 2014!

If anything, it only seems to be getting bigger, mind. Two or three years back, it spent its time scuttling mostly around the lower end of the Top 100. Now, though, it's actually barely been below the 50s since last October, so had been hovering not far off the 40 for basically all of this year. At this rate it's going to become a fixture within the bottom end of the Top 40 by next year.

twelve songs i’ve had on rotation this past week:

  • nice shoes / in your world - steve lacy
  • pretty girls make graves - the smiths
  • world’s always burning - militarie gun feat. mannequin p🐱ssy
  • circumambient - grimes
  • the wave - jungle
  • pagan poetry - björk
  • go! go! gorilla - vince staples (rap fans in here, go watch his tiny desk concert on youtube, it’s so good)
  • constantly - tiffany day & slayr
  • meet my maker - loathe

Well rein me in has it’s official 14th week at no.1 after taking off the 4 fake weeks that it lost to man I need according to the none acr chart. What is keeping it alive? And how is die with a smile still not on acr yet since coming up to 2 years old in the chart?

LVM

Lars Van Moer

"Rein me in" and "Die with a smile" : two songs with actual melodies (rather rare nowadays) and with great combinations of two voices each, which results in more variation than just one person singing or even mumbling.
