No way we had three artists go number 1, two of them brits! Such a great start to this year.

P

pressy

1

also worth noting how messed up it is that a song that references the artist's father being absent in his life due to him being killed in the Rwandan genocide is now being appropriated and exploited for cheap, inauthentic emotional payoff. to be honest if I was Stromae I think I'd feel a little nauseated (sorry to keep going on, sometimes I get a rush of inspiration to comment a lot)

P

it is too late to prevent that cover from charting now, so if I were the OCC I would simply replace the listing with Stromae's original in all future charts and treat it as a continuation of the original entry, since the original has never charted. it's damage limitation, but something to consider if any of them read these comments (they don't). might salvage their reputation a bit. hopefully this will be covered by British media outlets and they will be forced to answer for themselves

Actually I do have one more thing to add re #68

I recommend reading this article: https://vinylculture.substack.com/p/music-industry-2025-review-and-our

as quoted in a okayafrica article that also covered the 'song', which I will also link: https://www.okayafrica.com/generative-ai-is-changing-the-way-we-consume-music-by-african-artists/1421437

I think there are some misconceptions about the role major labels are playing in the AI 'music' landscape. they are certainly not here to champion the rights of their signed artists. here is an excerpt from the former article:

"The year’s defining narrative was watching major labels transform from litigators to collaborators in record time. In June 2024, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment filed aggressive lawsuits against AI music generators Suno and Udio, accusing them of “massive copyright infringement” by training on artists’ catalogs without permission.

"By October 2025, Universal had settled with Udio and announced a partnership. Three weeks later, Warner followed suit with both Suno and Udio. The pattern was unmistakable:

"Sue for leverage, Negotiate for profit, Settle for partnership.

"Meanwhile, all three majors simultaneously signed deals with Klay Vision, a mysterious Los Angeles AI music startup most people have never heard of.

"The lawsuits were never about protecting artists from AI; they were about ensuring labels controlled the terms of AI’s access to those artists. As Warner CEO Robert Kyncl candidly admitted,

"“With Suno rapidly scaling, both in users and monetization, we have seized this opportunity to shape models that expand revenue.”

"Translation: If you can’t beat them, take a cut of their $200 million in annual revenue."

I can envision a future where musicians who sign a major-label contract are forced to abide by a clause that allows the label the full rights to their music catalogue for data mining purposes by generative AI algorithms and to their likeness for the purposes of impersonation by generative AI, so that the label can monopolise on the exploitation of the artist's likeness and litigate heavily against those who infringe on their contractual 'right' to do so, allowing them full control for maximum profit. I think the law would have something to say as there are laws that protect an artist's likeness, but the law always conforms to the pursuit of profit eventually, and the labels can present it as a consensual agreement bound in contract despite the massive power disparity between the two parties.

in other words, I am afraid AI 'music' is here to stay.

I think OCC should be responsible and ban AI music from charting. While AI is useful for some things, for replicating human imagination and creativity it shouldn't be

Such a chaotic week Jeff Buckley and The Cure charting for the first time in years. And OCC being spineless letting an AI song chart I hope Stromae or his label forces them to remove the song as its disturbing. Letting I Run re chart was bad enough now this? 2026 might be the year I stop being a chart watcher if this continues.

I'm obsessed with the charts of 1979-1981, have you seen how awesome it used to be? Everything had to of course be a physical release, but to just see records enter at, say, no.74, rise a week later to, say, no.43... then 28, then 16, then 8... etc. how exciting. I find the chart in 2026 a little bit sad really and almost prefer to seek out all the 'no chance' indie releases!

Leon Thomas, I'd be surprised if it goes to anyone else when he is the only best new artist to be nominated elsewhere, they even nominated a live version of Mutt too, not to mention he is in for the top prize of album. It be odd if it went to anyone else.

After Alex Warren failed to get Ordinary nominated, I'd take him out of the running.

Olivia stands a shot but I feel like the next grammys will be her chance.

Curious to know thoughts on BRITs Nominations. I am shocked and quite disappointed on the whole. I thought on the whole JADE was pretty underappreciated, the effort she put into the era is unlike what we get from most nowadays and I feel it deserved an AOTY nom and if I am honest when you consider 'Blessings' by Calvin Harris/Clementine Douglas got a SOTY nom, I honestly feel that 'Plastic Box' deserved some appreciation also.

I would love to see Olivia Dean have a RAYE/Charli moment at this years BRITs, she is clearly one of the most exciting Brits (excuse the pun) right now. Very much deserves AOTY out of all the nominations.

I actually was checking out some Freya Skye songs not too long ago after randomly hearing her music while scrolling.

avatar

2

It’s a shame that Madison Beer barely made any impact considering she’s at #3 on the albums chart.

For me, it got the mix of bangers and ballads just right. Her vocals also remind me of Ariana a lot and I mean that as a massive compliment. If you’ve not heard ‘Locket’ and you’re a fan of pop, I highly recommend it.

Favourite tracks were ‘You’re Still Everything’, ‘Bittersweet’ and ‘Yes Baby’.

avatar

the40

1

Madison's issue in my opinion is that she doesn't know who she is as an artist. At some points she is trying to sound like Ariana, at other points Tate. It feels to me like she is in the middle ground of inspiration and impersonation. A similar issue happened with Ava Max, except of course more brazen as she literally was using samples heavily in her music.

avatar

Piran

1

I don't really hear the Tate McRae comparisons, although I will say that 'Bad Enough' wasn't the best choice for the next single.

Piran

7

Sigh. I was hoping that the entry at #68 would either fail to chart or be disqualified by OCC, but sadly not.

For context, it’s an entirely AI-generated remix. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… it’s not real music. It’s utterly lazy and puts creative artists who have original ideas at a disadvantage. There’s absolutely no place for it in the industry. I doubt this’ll be the last time we have to deal with these kinds of situations, but for as long as songs like this continue to show up here, I’ll continue to call them out.

The most frustrating part about it? The original version of ‘Papaoutai’ by Stromae never charted in the UK despite being one of the most iconic foreign language songs of all-time. :(

avatar

the40

3

See, I am in two minds about AI in the charts and I think it is context dependant. With HAVEN, I honestly didn't mind because he produced it, wrote the lyrics etc. and only used AI as a production tool to get the vocal effect he wanted on the track. With entirely AI songs, I think they should be disqualified straight away from the chart. As there was no creative process.

avatar

Piran

3

I don't support what HAVEN did, but at least 'I Run' incorporated some human effort.

avatar

Bound2u

3

Justice for Stromae!! He deserves better and he should sue!!!! It’s pretty much stolen music

avatar

Piran

1

I completely agree. I also wonder if this will turn into another 'Miss You' situation. Anyone who was following the charts in late 2022 will know.

avatar

Bound2u

1

I followed the charts back then kinda, south star and Oliver tree right? Who’s stole it

avatar

Piran

S

Sam_321

1

I can hope Stromae or his label file a Takedown notice on the song forcing OCC is removed it like what happened to I Run the first time. And in this case there isn't a defend the motherf**ker straight up Stole Stromae's song

avatar

InTheMix26

2

As much as I'm against AI and would love for Gen AI to just be wiped off the face of the earth, the official charts is meant to judge what people are listening to. And if they're listening to a lazy AI remix, then they're listening to a lazy AI remix. OCC are just reporting on what's happening; the root of the problem is this stuff getting on streaming - that's what needs to be stopped.

avatar

Piran

2

True. Songs like this shouldn't even be on streaming sites in the first place.

Then again, OCC themselves said and I quote; "It is against Official Charts Company policy to include within our charts any repertoire which is believed to potentially be infringing."

I don't see how this doesn't count as infringement, when 'I Run' did for a less serious issue.

P

pressy

2

I think chart companies are responsible for what they determine to be 'music'. they can move the needle and drive consumption patterns and behaviour. for them to unequivocally exclude AI 'music' would send a strong message: these works are not to be considered in the same category as music created by actual artists, they are not the same.

to see an AI 'song' listed with all the real music implies it has the same right to be there are any other song. it announces to the world: there is no line between art and imitation, they are one and the same, you can conceive of them as being in the same category, rather than inalienably separate.

if we don't draw the line now, it will only become more blurred until AI 'music' is fully embedded within the music landscape and cannot be excised. I strongly feel that this is our chance to make a strong distinction so that AI 'music' will forever be seen as belonging to a separate category and cannot be conceived of in the same terms as real music, which will protect the integrity of art and artists and their livelihoods.

P

pressy

1

yeah with 'I Run' I think the OCC were just covering their backsides. they are pretty explicit in their policy, to be fair. if there is no litigator, there is no litigation, no danger, no reason for OCC to be concerned either way

avatar

InTheMix26

0

On the note of AI music on streaming services, if anyone wants a lightening of the mood, I am certain of one thing in music that AI cannot replace: live music. No one wants to see the instruments play themselves, they want to see so-and-so from that band playing it. No one's gonna care when this AI starts dating this AI, and the only stadium in London that could pull off the ol' hologram trick is the one ABBA is using, let alone some pub in the corner of the country where the new Oasis is practicing right now. Strangely enough with the whole "Keep Music Live" movement dating back to the 80s, I think AI's helping create a huge comeback for it. And luckily for musicians, live music is the only thing paying the bills at the moment.

P

pressy

0

I reckon they'll have a good crack at creating elaborate visual...arrangements to accompany AI 'performances' that will simulate the experience of watching actual artists perform, but we can only hope it doesn't resonate with audiences...although we do see virtual bands such as Gorillaz, the hologram technology you mentioned, virtual concerts on platforms such as Fortnite...oh and there was that nightmarish Ozzy Osbourne AI-generated tribute at a concert in recent months, unfortunately I forget whose
