MULL OF KINTYRE/GIRLS' SCHOOL
by WINGS
Wings were a British/ American rock band fronted by ex-Beatle Paul McCartney. Inspired by the Scottish Kintyre peninsula where he owned a rural retreat, Mull Of Kintyre was first written by McCartney as The Piano Tape in 1974 and was developed by him and guitarist Denny Laine during a break in recording the band’s London Town album, and recorded in a makeshift mobile studio in a barn on his farm, with the nearby Campbeltown Pipe Band giving it some bagpipe.
First released on November 11, 1977, Mull Of Kintyre was Wings’ (occasionally billed as Paul McCartney and Wings) 15th UK chart entry and sole chart-topper, shooting to the summit by early December and remaining there for nine weeks – scooping the UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 spot in the process – until the end of January. Mull Of Kintyre has sold over 2 million copies in the UK.
