The second UK Official Singles Chart Number 1, following his 1965 chart debut It’s Not Unusual, for the Welsh-born Tom Jones, Green, Green Grass Of Home was written by Claude "Curly" Putman Jr., and first recorded by singer Johnny Darrell in 1965, as a country song made popular by Porter Wagoner the same year, when it reached No. 4 on the Country chart. Tom Jones released his version in November 1966 where it entered the Top 40 at Number 35 before catapulting up the list to hit Number 1 in its fourth week at the beginning of December and taking roost there for seven weeks making it the year’s UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1. It’s the tenth biggest-seller of the decade with 1.27 million sales.
