SPORTS CAR
by TATE MCRAE
Go on a joy ride with Tate McRae - the slinky, sexy Sports car is an uproarious track taken from her third album So Close to What.
Released as the album's third single, following It's OK I'm OK and 2 hands, Sports car was written by McRae, Julia Michaels (Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber) and the track's producers, Ryan Tedder and Grant Boutin.
Like most of So Close to What, Sports car chugs along with an elastic feminine pop energy, but is more boundary-pushing and experimental than it may seem. In a break from standard form, the chorus isn't sung, but whispered to the listener - a clear nod to both Britney Spears's club-pop opus Blackout and Selena Gomez's left-of-centre 2017 single Bad Liar (also co-written by Michaels).
'I think you know what this is,' McRae says, 'I think you wanna uh...no, you ain't got no missus, oh but you got a sports car...'
Upon original release, Sports car debuted at Number 8 on the Official Singles Chart (becoming McRae's then-fifth Top 10 single), but following the release of So Close to What, it richoceted up to a brand new peak of Number 3. Interestingly enough, it's the third track by McRae to reach Number 3; following her breakout 2020 ballad you broke me first and 2023's energetic greedy.
In April 2025, Official Charts announced that Sports car was one of the UK's biggest songs of 2025 so far.
