The Subway by Chappell Roan was released on 31 July 2025 through Island Records.
The Subway is a cinematic dream-pop breakup anthem blending nostalgic '80s synths with raw emotional storytelling. Produced by Dan Nigro, the track captures the ache of heartbreak through Roan’s haunting vocals and vivid lyrics, following a fleeting subway encounter that turns into a metaphor for love lost in New York City. First teased during her 2024 Governors Ball performance, fans praised its intimate, live-show energy, now fully realized in studio form.
The official music video was shot on 35mm film and directed by Amber Grace Johnson and brings the song’s emotional weight to life with surreal NYC visuals and iconic red imagery. The Subway is quickly becoming one of the top trending alt-pop releases of 2025, solidifying Chappell Roan as a breakout voice in queer pop and indie music.
Previous to this single being released, Chappell Roan achieved an Official Number 1 Single with Pink Pony Club in March 2025 and an Official Number 1 Album with The Rise And Fall Of The Midwest Princess in August 2024.
