Girls Aloud discography: Sound of the Underground to Something new single and album artwork
Released on December 16 2002, Girls Aloud's debut single stormed straight to the Christmas Number 1 spot that year. Sound of the Underground was one of sixty songs Xenomania's Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper wrote with the aim of launching their own girl band. Then, along came the Popstars: The Rivals winners.
Released on May 12 2003, No Good Advice peaked at Number 2. The song's chorus, we kid you not, began life as 'I don't like fried rice'.
The original release of Girls Aloud's debut album Sound of the Underground hit shelves on June 7 2003. This version of the album features the original version of Some Kind of Miracle - before its vocals and production were reworked for the album's re-release later that year.
Life Got Cold peaked at Number 3 on the Official Singles Chart in August 2003. Noel Gallagher was retrospectively added as a credited songwriter after comparisons were drawn between this single and Oasis hit Wonderwall.
Had Number 2-peaking Jump not been released as a single - with its Love Actually movie tie-in - the band were originally set to release album track Some Kind of Miracle (originally titled Should I Stay or Should I Go).
The girls' debut album was re-released following the success of Jump, and featured new tracks such as You Freak Me Out (originally penned for the Freaky Friday movie soundtrack) and a cover a Duran Duran's Girls on Film.
The Show proved a smash hit, charting at Number 2 - though it wasn't always set to be the lead single from their second album. Androgynous Girls, Wake Me Up and Graffiti My Soul were also contenders.
Fun fact, the Love Machine backing track was actually inspired by The Smiths' work.
I'll Stand By You - a cover of The Pretenders' classic - reached Number 1 as the official Children in Need 2004 single. But did you know the track started life very differently? The first version was a 'weird, modernist breakbeat' take on the song.
What Will The Neighbours Say? features a 'solo' track written by each of the girls - Hear Me Out (Sarah), Big Brother (Cheryl), Thank Me Daddy (Kimberley), I Say a Prayer for You (Nicola) and 100 Different Ways (Nadine).
Wake Me Up was the track that inspired Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand to team up with production house Xenomania on some (still unreleased) tracks. Oh, and actual Harley Davidson loaned the group the motorcycles used for their iconic Top of the Pop performance of this Number 5 hit.
Despite never coming to fruition, Long Hot Summer was originally set to be featured in the Herbie: Fully Loaded movie (hence the car repair shop setting of the music video). This track also replaced the girls' planned release of Chris Isaac's Wicked Game, which was announced as a single before quickly being retracted from their official website.
The inclusion of the 'without wicked games' lyric in this Number 4 smash was actually in reference to the group's lost single, Wicked Game.
Girls Aloud's Chemistry album peaked at Number 11 in December 2005.
A special edition of the Chemistry album, complete with bonus disc of original and cover versions of Christmas songs, was released in line with the original. It features one of the girls' most-streamed non-singles to date; Not Tonight Santa.
The band's cover of the Dee C Lee classic peaked at Number 9 in Christmas Number 1 week 2005.
Girls Aloud flew to Paris to shoot the video for this Number 6-charting single.
The original objective when creating Number 3 smash Something Kinda Ooooh was to create an '80s-sounding song along the lines of George Michael's Too Funky. The end product, however, was a much harder dance track.
The girls' first of two greatest hits compilations - The Sound of Girls Aloud - features tracks still unavailable on streaming. Songs like Money and Singapore remain physical CD exclusives.
Up until the last minute, the band were set to release a cover of 'Flashdance...What a Feeling!' - a song they'd previously performed on their Chemistry tour. It was then changed to a cover of Tiffany's '80s hit I Think We're Alone Now. The song charted at Number 4 in 2006.
Girls Aloud's collaboration with Sugababes on a cover of Aerosmith and Run-DMC's classic Walk This Way might've managed the Number 1 spot for Comic Relief in 2007, but it almost wasn't to be. Other options for the single included Blur's Girls & Boys and - Nicola Roberts' suggestion - Candi Staton's You Got the Love.
Did you know Girls Aloud's Number 4 hit Sexy! No No No... samples '70s rock group Nazareth's track Hair of the Dog?
Tangled Up peaked at Number 4 in 2007, and reportedly didn't feature the girls on the cover to appeal to a wider demographic. Apparently, men didn't buy records with girl bands on the cover.
Call The Shots was originally recorded around The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits era, but was deemed 'too downbeat' for a hits compilation; so saved for the Tangled Up record. The song saw the girls make their X Factor performance debut, and peaked at Number 3.
Brian Higgins admits Can't Speak French was the 'easiest' Girls Aloud song he ever created. Had this not been the final release from Tangled Up, it just might've been Girl Overboard or Close to Love.
Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper wrote The Promise in just seven minutes. The song reached Number 1 in October 2008.
Out of Control peaked at Number 1 in November 2008, becoming their second to do so after The Sound of Girls Aloud - The Greatest Hits.
This song was originally written with Pet Shop Boys, intended for their tenth studio album Yes. The band eventually offered the song to Girls Aloud, who reached Number 10 with the song in 2009.
This track was remixed for its eventual single release, since the original album version came in at almost 7 minutes in length. The song peaked at Number 11 in April 2009.
Released as the official Children in Need 2012 single, Something New was pipped to Number 1 by Olly Murs and Flo Rida's Troublemaker; settling for a Number 2 peak.
The group's second hits compilation - titled Ten to mark their tenth anniversary - peaked at Number 9 on the Official Albums Chart and also included the group's final release, Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me.
