The charts today represent what people are listening to, but are they all listening to the same songs for over a year? When the charts were based on physical sales, the people just played the record as many times as they liked, but that information isnt relevant to the rest of the population, I didn't want to know how many times Johnny next door was playing Stand and deliver by Adam Ant.
Obviously the top 40 then was still a measure of what was popular but in a different way.
But todays chart has enabled us to see how many times As it was by Harry Styles is played, but who cares about that, hes already had the hit with it, thats all we need to know surely?
Can it be healthy to have the same songs in the charts for years on end in some cases.
Please someone can you see my point?

Most of the top 100 has been there for most of the year. This would never have happened pre streaming days. Singles came and went within a few weeks typically. Surely this questions whether or not streaming should influence the charts?

Xander
Mate saying that streaming shouldn't be taken into account is stupid, the charts are supposed to represent what people listen to, well over 90% of sales are through streams and many songs never even get a physical release. There's already ACR which cycles out older songs by cutting their streaming values in 2 after a certain amount of time. And a large part of the reason we are seeing older songs stay around longer recently is because of a lack of any new real hits. We're seeing changing trends and I recon we're in the calm before the storm that is the next wave of music. For all we know another Smells Like Teen Spirit or Royals will show up and then older songs won't hold up as well.
quolizzy
Well at least you were polite, unlike that other idiot.
I just feel passionately about this because I used to follow the charts from as far back as the late 70's. And the turn over was much quicker in the physical age.
Then the minute the chart company allowed streaming affect the charts, the whole industry seems to be grinding to a halt.
Honestly most of the top 100 has been there since last year, its surely not because everyone is playing the same songs on repeat on Spotify is it?
You would think people would be listening to something else by now, there is new music out there, it seems as though if its not promoted via a trendy platform people are not interested.
We need a new punk revolution to shake everything up, but have a better balance between physical releases and streaming, it just seems a stagnant shambles at the moment.
It almost seems pointless having a top 100, and just cut it back to a top 40 like it used to be. I'm not saying thats going to fix things, but at least a top 40 might refresh itself it bit quicker.

The thing is, there just aren't any physical sales anymore really. Using physical sales as the only basis would be even more meaningless.
Sometimes it does go on a bit but I like the way something that didn't do so well can come back (like Snap by Rosa Linn or Sure Thing by Miguel) or other things like Running Up That Hill that become popular again for a cultural reason (which has always happened), so I wouldn't want to see any more of a limit on chart runs than there already is. It's a bit dull when things like As It Was and Green Green Grass hang around forever but that feels like a small price to pay. It was really disappointing in the 90s when your favourite new song lasted a whole week - I'd have loved some of those to last a year! So, I'm not sure there is a best way really. But I don't think physical sales is the way to go in this era.

Chart Review 22/09/23
Avast ye! Thou who shalt note that the charts have become stagnant and repugnant will be cast at sea, because for the first time in what feels like years, there are 10, count 'em, TEN new singles in this week's UK Top 40. Admittedly, two of them are re-entries, in the form of SZA, who is STILL promoting that Snooze song people haven't stopped streaming yet by hiring Justin Bieber to prolong the misery (c'mon guys, Snooze isn't even that good), and the other one is Rema who probably shouldn't be allowed to have any more Top 40 hits, for fear of the Earth's core splitting open. But there's still 8 new hits, so good for me. I actually have stuff to talk about! WOW. *sarcasm overload
In more boring news, however, and Doja Cat is settling into her new role as the most popular lady on Earth, as Paint The Town Red achieves a 3rd week at the summit. Her new album Scarlet came out today as well, so you can probably give her at least a few more weeks in pole position until the next global superstar plops some songs out. Like Ed, or Taylor, or someone else I don't feel inclined to mention.
Olivia Rodrigo thus has to shatter her sorry heart for another week despite still having 3 songs in the Top 10, and this pain is further influenced by her excavation at the album chart, where she slips a spot to accommodate everybody's favourite band circa 2003, Busted. Who have never topped the album chart. Until now, obvs. Even though they've had to trod all over their legacy and make rehashed versions of their hits with other forgotten 21st century rock institutes, like All Time Low, The Vamps, Dashboard Confessional, erm.. Jonas Brothers. And Hanson, for some reason. Don't bother questioning their logic, ok? It's way too complicated for us to understand.
There is a major shakeup in the bestsellers though. Strangers by Kenya Grace, a lady who was so unknown when she clattered into the Top 20 a few weeks back that she didn't even have a Twitter/X account. But alas, she seems to be transitioning into the Eliza Rose of 2023. That being, an unknown artist suddenly going MENTAL on TikTok and firing to the top of the charts. Given she's now at No.3, I wouldn't put it past her. Shame the song though.
This does mean that Fred Again.. slips to 5, meaning that my naked fantasies I attempted to jinx last week have fallen on deaf ears. But what about the new stuff, you say? The new stuff? Well. There's a lot of it, alright? Stop asking me. You can see the chart, you don't need me to state the obvious.
50% of this week's newcomers are straight in the 40, which, given 4 of last week's 5 have fallen out this week, makes for grim reading. I don't think Tate McRae really cares about this analysis. Yeah, her. You remember Tate McRae right? The you broke me first girl? The one from that Tiesto track? No? Tough. Cause she's back, in the form of greedy, and she finally has a 2nd Top 10 hit to tail that thingy from 2020 that she probably still regrets. I have two problems with this though. A), THE SONG IS TOO SHORT, and B), I'm not really a fan of her stuff, which will really bite her in the gonads when I've compiled my list of every Top 40 song from 2023. Because right now, she's struggling to reach the 160 mark (out of 235 currently. Heat Waves is the worst, and I don't think there's any arguments there). Although, having said that, Oliver Tree's shouty song is in the Top 40 somewhere, so I shouldn't be allowed to have opinions.
Also making Top 10 is inroads is You-Know-Who, Raked, which is definitely not an anagram for another artist I could mention. Anyways, Raked gets a 41st Top 10 song with Slime You Out, a 5 minute ode to breakups with his female partner-in-tow, SZSZSZSZAAAZSZZA. Or however you say her name (yes, I know it's *scissor*, give me a break). But as this a Raked song, I can't really comment on whatever the melody or stuff sounds like, because I couldn't care less. Moving on.
The rest of the new hits could be conceived as a dance-maker's paradise, as all the people coming back from Ibiza, Ayia Napa, Miami and the like start to gatebomb the Autumn charts for the next few weeks. No.33 and No.37 are prime examples, where a lady you haven't heard of, climbs aboard the stage of a DJ or house producer you don't know much about, and WACKY HIJINXS ENSUE!! Oh, and in my opinion, DNA (Loving You) by Billy Gillies and Hannah Boleyn (the former) is better than Rave Out by Turno, Skepsis, and Charlotte Plank (the latter).
It's not as if there aren't other dance tunes though. Zara Larsson finally makes a song that doesn't make me have an excrutiating time, which was exactly what Can't Tame Her gave me whenever it popped up on the radio. On My Love sees her divebomb into David Guetta's arms once again, although she's the lead artist this time, so I can't exactly blame this slightly mediocre (I said SLIGHTLY, didn't I? It's usually awful in my vocabulary) dance track from reaching No.38 first week out. Also entering after 7 days in are Chase & Status, who are having the best career revival of 2023 (sorry Kylie fans), given Baddadan is still in the chart, and Disconnect has only now left the Top 10. Their new one is the not as good Liquor & Cigarettes, where ArrDee spits some lyrics and has a fun time. Also some remixer called Hedex is here, but no one likes him, so he doesn't matter.
The other new hits involve the latest TikTok sensation, South African R'N'B wannabe Tyla, who rockets up to 24 with Water, which currently sits at 95 in my overall ranking of the hits. Not like I have anything to say about this song however, because it just kind of blends into the background, really. This is something I can't say about Zach Bryan, a man who WAS known for making Something in the Orange (whatever THAT meant), but can now possess a Top 40 hit in the form of I Remember Everything, which also brings Kacey Musgraves into Top 40 territory. Now, as you may or may not know already, I LOATHE country music, so that automatically means it's getting a bad rap from me. Still though, this is a somewhat poor effort from the two of them, I know they have their fans and all, but I'm not of them. Maybe this criticism can inspire Zach and/or Kacey to make better music in the future, which is a message EVERYONE should aspire to. Except the likes of Cian Ducrot, obviously. We need SOMEBODY to take the mickey out of every now and again. Overall, the new hits could be better this week. Nuff said really.
I don't have enough energy (or time) to talk about any of the other Top 100 entrants, so I'm just gonna abandon my post now and cry into a pillow at the though of talking about Ed Sheeran again in two weeks' time. Cheerio.
(P.S. Looking at the Spotify figures from today, you can expect appearances in the charts next week somewhere from Tom Odell (not the one you think though), Nines, blink-182, and also a collab album by Headie One and K-Trap. I am slightly stunned by the lack of Doja Cat songs in their though. Curious, isn't it? Not really, no.)

Streams. They don't have 'em. I thought after 9 years of Spotify action on the singles chart you would've known this by now. Besides, the last time Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan made a record (IN THE DOWNLOAD ERA), it didn't even make the 40, so you should've expected this to happen.

So happy to see NOAH KAHAN already back in the chart with his brilliant new single CALL YOUR MOM!!

Didn't expect to see BONGOS dropping this week!! I guess the single won't be as successful as WAP!!

I don't remember that song ever being called WASP, but yeah, not a great time for the two of 'em. They could learn from Doja Cat when it comes to slightly annoying huge hits.
THIERRY
Really thought JAZZY will have a 3rd Top 10 with the brilliant FEEL IT so very surprised to see her single not having much impact either in her native Ireland nor in the UK!!
THIERRY
Over the moon to see TYLA already making the Top 30 after only 2 weeks in the chart!! Hope to see WATER making the Top 10 soon!!

Same tbh! I really liked the song from the first listen and it's only continued to grow on me. :)
Incredible how it's in the Top 3 after only three weeks for a relatively unknown artist!

About time I added a new song into the Great Tier! 😅
Good to see ‘DNA (Loving You)’, ‘Rave Out’ and especially ‘On My Love’ here among the dance hits! ‘Cigarettes & Liquor’ isn’t for me at all unfortunately.
As for SZA, ‘Snooze’ is fine even I haven’t heard the acoustic remix yet, but didn’t care for ‘Slime You Out’ sadly.

It’s actually crazy how ‘Dog Days Are Over’ never went Top 20 despite having spent 63 weeks and counting in the chart (probably will get many more even when it’s back on ACR).
Not complaining about its longevity though. It’s aged incredibly well and it’s amazing to see it get a second big chart run! 😊
Piran
Shame to see ‘Miracle’ leave the Top 40, but it had an incredible run throughout the summer. :)
Very pleased that Calvin and Ellie collabed again!
Piran
I may not have been fully won over by any of the big country hits this year so far, but ‘I Remember Everything’ just changed that for me. Congrats, Zach and Kacey. Fantastic duet!
So glad to see them entering the Top 40! ❤️
Piran
Congratulations to Tate on her third Top 10 single and her first one to debut there.
‘Greedy’ is such a bop. Kind of gives me 00’s pop/R&B flashbacks! 😁
