My Traffic Light Review this week (by the way for those who don’t know, I was iqxnic)
🔴 Negative:
1) Bad Day & Life Goes On. Need I say more? I agree with Piran here, stream the PS1 version of life goes on.
2) Cold Heart being held back AGAIN by shivers. I’m sorry but bad tragic (which is worse than Black Tragic at this point) and shivers shouldn’t exist.
3) Wid It & Wasted are both still here. Awful songs.
4) Drive keeps on dropping, Clean Bandit’s version of How Will I Know only debuted at 100, You & I yet again didn’t debut :( and One Night missing out on the Top 40.
5) You For Me & Let Them Know both dropping out 😭
6) BED all the way down to 95 as well :(

🟠 Mixed:
1) Wildest Dreams TV dropping. Mixed because it only went down to 50 but would be negative if it dropped a lot.
2) Mr Brightside rising back up. Growing on me a lot but it’s been around for ages.
3) Head & Heart down. At least it remained in the top 75. Finally growing off of me though.
4) LBYLM on ACR. Ok song but it’s been in the chart too much.

🟢 Positive:
1) OUT OUT finally rising! It’s also started picking up traction in the US, Canada & Australia with it debuting at 83 in Canada and entering the top 50 for the first time in Australia at 50.
2) By Your Side rising again after ages.
3) 2 Gains for Lil Nas X
4) Heat Waves top 5!
5) I Don’t Want You up to 55! Please get this to top 40.
6) , I’ll even put One Night here because of its massive rise, even if it did only get to 45.
7) My Heart Goes (La Di Da) top 15 and Woman holding up strong at 14.
8) No Time To Die returning and Happier Than Ever back in the Top 10. I’m starting to love Billie’s songs 😻
Overall, a solid week barring Bad Day and Life Goes On.

How Will I Know with Whitney & Clean Bandit debuted at only #100 despite being around the Top 10 on iTunes and around the Top 40 on Apple Music all week long but I guess it's lacking on Spotify, Amazon and YouTube. Hopefully Spotify and Amazon will feature it more prominently on their platforms or add it to their main playlists. And hopefully a music video will be released on YouTube. I like the remix and prefer it over David Guetta's version. It had been at #87 in the last two midweek updates but only made it to #100, I hope it gains momentum in the upcoming weeks. A Top 40 finish would be great.

🔴 (negative)
1. bad day climbed - i didn’t mind it at first but isn’t funny anymore. it soured on me.
2. two 10/10 songs fell... remember is down to 27, and hurricane is nearly out of the top 40! kanye really doesn’t deserve this.
3. my universe also fell. let’s hope it doesn’t fall further especially with coldplay’s new album coming out. speaking of coldplay i do wish coloratura became a hit, that song is 10 minutes of beauty.
4. i’m disappointed at how much take my breath underperformed. i really thought it’d do better.
5. shivers is STILL number 1. roll on october 15!

🟠 (mixed)
1. better days climbs again. i love the message and dermot’s vocals are powerful, but the production in the chorus is terrible.
2. woman is turning into my head and my heart at this point... it’s been number 14 for the past few weeks!
3. cold heart remains at number 2. i like this song and it has a nice groove, but i have to quote what piran and dave knight (plus nigel coleman to an extent) said last week: it feels like he’s piggybacking off dua lipa and isn’t getting any more hits as a solo artist, which explains why it’s been 18 years since his last solo number 1. still a good song though!
4. the script got the number 1 album this week, which was really expected given how dead last week was for new music. they’re a really boring group imo, but not really bad.

🟢 (positive)
1. NO TIME TO DIE IS BACK IN THE TOP 40!!! i’m literally so happy about this, it’s aged like fine wine and billie’s vocals are at their best in this. going to see the film over the weekend too, which should be awesome. 007 forever!
2. speaking of billie, i also adored alone with you - it samples my second favourite song by her (hostage) and the beat is hard. i hope this rises, because this will get a really high replay factor from me.
3. i also loved life goes on, its been in my tiktok page for a while now and that chorus is so catchy. reminds me of a twenty one pilots song.
4. love tonight is sticking around!
5. happier than ever is back in the top 10!! best song this year! my favourite artist of all time had a GREAT week!!
6. wait... WHAT?! heat waves has entered the top 5?!?! i never thought this would happen but i’m so excited about it!

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (08/10/2021 – 14/10/2021)

🔴 (Negative)

1) ‘My Universe’ dropping out of the Top 10 after just one week! I knew that a massive hyped collaboration like this would take a significant second week drop, especially when it was mostly driven by downloads, but I still thought it would’ve been able to hold up a bit better than this. Anyway, the song grew on me as predicted! I still don’t see the need for the choppy vocal processing nor the glitchy outro, but both groups put so much passion into this & the lyrics are really heart-warming too. I really hope this can find some sort of stability soon!

2) ‘Wasted’ remains stagnant & it’s getting even more irritating with every listen! At least Radio 1 finally dropped it from their playlist, so hopefully it won’t feature in many more chart shows.

3) I actually had a rant written about ‘Life Goes On’ all prepared for last week in case it did enter the Top 40, but it just fell short of the region, so I decided to delete it! If I’m being honest though, getting angry at this being here would be giving it more attention that it deserves. Seriously, Oliver Tree can’t sing at all nor appear to find a consistent tone & whenever he’s not singing off-key, he’s squawking repetitively throughout the week in a gratingly higher pitch! The production is so one-dimensional & hollow, while the content seems very contradictory, like, why are you banging on about how “life goes on” so much when you also say that you’re going to feed your ex to the wolves, or rip her up to piece, or “set this place on fire”. Again, the latter points don’t really affect me either, but it’s the piercing vocals that really put me off this! It’s the same reason why a lot of regulars here can’t stand ‘Dance Monkey’, but even though I can kind of see where they’re coming from, at least that song had some sense of groove. Please, don’t give this any more attention, I think we’ve done more than enough as it is! Stream the PS1 song of the same name instead.

4) ‘Bad Day’ still going up! I wouldn’t be mentioning it here again if I didn’t have to mute the song less than a couple of hours ago. Thanks, Scott Mills!

5) ‘Drive’ & ‘Wid It’ are both on their way out! The former being my most streamed song of the week so far & the latter being one of my favourite rap songs of the year so far! Both deserve better.

6) To make matters worse, ‘One Night’ by Griff, a genuinely catchy & vibrant pop song, misses the Top 40 altogether! The sad part is that if it can’t get there following a performance on the results show for Strictly Come Dancing back on Sunday night, then it’s never going to make it at all. What a huge shame! :(

7) ‘Tell Me Something Good’ by Ewan McVicar didn’t make it either! I was actually really excited about covering it today, since the numbers from BuzzJack seemed really promising all week, but I guess it wasn’t to be. Maybe it’ll break through next week?

🟠 (Mixed)

1) While ‘Cold Heart [PNAU Remix]’ is still closing the gap on ‘Shivers’, there is still a margin of a few thousand combined sales between them & next week might be the former’s final chance to hit #1, for reasons that I’ll explain later on in this review.

2) I heard ‘Alone With You’ for the first time last night knowing that it could enter the Top 40 this week! Overall, I think this is the kind of song where I see the appeal behind it, but it’ll be a bit difficult for me to get into it personally. I can certainly give a lot of credit to how sincere the message from Arz to his lover is here, where he’s putting her personality before material items or getting it on her with her, something that you don’t really see in the charts a lot nowadays sadly! I found that the warbled, muffled female backing vocals being thrown into the back of the mix (actually a Billie Eilish sample, believe it or not) also gives this a really chilled feel behind it, but I don’t know, I’m not entirely sold on Arz’s flow here. Based on his tone alone in this song, I’m not sure if he could do much in terms of singing or taking on a slightly faster melody, which can be a serious problem when you place over a bland skittery trap beat or a bass which seems very inconsistent & out of time with almost everything else! Again, I appreciate the sentiment here & it definitely has a relaxing feel to it without sounding boring, but yeah, I’m not really going to go out of my way to listen to it, although again, I’d still recommend it for those of who are generally fans of slower & upcoming UK rap.

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Love Nwantiti’ broke the Top 3 & I genuinely can’t remember the last time we had an Afrobeats hit this big in the UK! I said that this might go on to see a similar level of success to what some of Fuse ODG’s hits did a few years ago, but I honestly think it might’ve surpassed even those by now. I’ve seen a really mixed response to this on here so far, but honestly, I’m officially addicted to it!

2) ‘Heat Waves’ finally entered the Top 5! It’s been out for literally months now & it still might not be done yet. My only nit-pick is that a song called ‘Heat Waves’ reaching a new peak in October just seems a bit out of place! You’d think this would’ve performed even better around July to September, but it just doesn’t seem to fit now that the weather is getting colder. Still an awesome pop song regardless!

3) ‘Happier Than Ever’ somehow returned to the Top 10! It’s not often that you see Billie Eilish hits get two chart runs inside the region, so the fact that she’s making a resurgence with one of her best single to date is really satisfying to see.

4) ‘My Heart Goes [La Di Da]’ is still climbing! It’s not really holding up with the other tracks from ‘Only Honest Of The Weekend’ for me, but it’s still a bop.

5) ‘Visiting Hours’ remains stable! It’s nice to see that people aren’t forgetting about this despite the overexposure for the inferior ‘Shivers’ & especially ‘Bad Habits’. Hopefully it’ll stay that way after the album release!

6) ‘Better Days’ moves up slowly but steadily & showing no signs of stopping anytime soon! Dermot Kennedy hasn’t made one bad song. It’s amazing to see an artist so consistently talented gathering this much momentum, especially with such an empowering single!

7) The Script back at #1 on the albums chart! I’m glad that they chose to release a Greatest Hits album, given how much their music motivated me & got me through some difficult times a few years ago.

8) Adele confirmed that she’s finally releasing the lead single to her fourth studio album, ‘30’, a week today! I’m putting this here by default purely based on how much I love Adele, so let’s just hope that ‘Easy On Me’ can now live up to those expectations.

💚 (Really Positive)

1) I normally only reserve this section on rare occasions where something incredible has happened, but honestly, even though it’s only been two weeks since I last did it, this has to be done, because ‘No Time To Die’ made it back into the Top 40 already thanks to the movie of the same name finally being released! I don’t even know it’s off ACR yet or getting reset for next week, but you all know how I gave it a 10/10 when I first heard it in February 2020? Yeah, that score hasn’t changed for it! Easily Billie’s best song to date & it’s honestly up there among my favourite Bond themes of all-time now.
