Hi, I write from Italy. I follow the UK Chart on BBC Radio1 every week, I wanted to know what you thought of the Maneskin.

AR

Anthony Rogers

5

Hi Paul, hope everything is good in Italy, been there a few times and love it.
I like Maneskin , they are a breath of fresh air in the stale UK charts. I just hope they can release more good songs to keep the interest going.

avatar

Half Giant- Ethan

5

Hey man, Maneskin are amazing. They're reviving one of the most popular and influential genres, not to mention iconic, and the impact they're having can only be a good thing. They're so talented!

hi, i really like maneskin! they deserved all the success they had last summer. i just hope they don’t fade out quickly like previous eurovision acts did.

Sorry Anthony for just answering you now. I'm glad you enjoyed it in Italy, but where have you been? I am from Sicily. I, on the other hand, have been in the UK in Manchester where my son lived, and in London.

AR

Anthony Rogers

1

That's ok Paul.
I've been to Rome, Tivoli , Sorrento, Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum Verona, Bressanone and the Alpine area.
I would love to go to Sicily, have always wanted to go to Syracuse, Taormina, Cefalu and Monreale.
I lived in London about 25 years ago ! Mow I am in the Midlands near Worcester.

Hi Anthony, I'm glad you were in Italy, then I wish you to come back, maybe in Sicily, it's still summer here! Have a nice day. Paolo.

aw man, it’s all kicking off again, just as i thought it was over. i never thought i would say this, but please take it from frank for once - after a chat i had with him, he’s sticking to talking about music. why does bullsh** have to kick off every week? to anyone causing this drama, go away and find jesus before you come back.

to quote one of melanie martinez’s lyrics: “i never signed up for your drama club.”

I know, right? Frank can be annoying at times, but at least he partly talks about music. :/

2

Why are there so many narrow minded idiots on here.
I have stayed away from posting anything about the comments made by some people and screenshots being used etc.
For Gods sake can't some of you people on here just GROW UP.
This is a place where we can meet up and talk about music etc regardless of age, sexuality, race, creed or colour.
If you are not here to do just that why don't you just go and play on FB or Twitter or whatever.

SO PLEASE CAN WE JUST GET ON WITH IT.

Unfortunately, Anthony, social media in 2021 is a very toxic place!

I’d personally suggest blocking these people, or if they create multiple accounts, just report them.

My concern is, where are the site moderators in all of this? :(

exactly anthony, at this point i’ve had enough and i’m sick of nearly all of them. NEARLY ALL OF THEM. and i’m done with them, they clearly can’t find jesus in their lives.

i honestly feel really sorry for regulars like you, frank, dave, dami, kiesling, etc who have to read through this bs every week. i wish they would just leave, find god, come back when they’re at peace, and make this place a better community again.

i’m glad people like you are saying what i’m thinking. keep up the good work 👍

I still have trouble believing that 'Bad Habits' can be number two on ACR. That must be the lowest ACR drop of all time. Also, congrats to 'STAY' for breaking Liv's record for fastest song to reach 600 million spotify streams!!!

When a song drops off chart, do sales and streams still count towards the end of year (ie. drivers license, is that still gaining?)

Yeah, but not by a lot if they’re outside of the weekly Top 100! :P

JH

Driver's Licence might still be top 100 if not for the 3 song rule, so could be racking up significant sales/streams towards the end of year chart (if I understand how end-of-year chart is calculated).

Haven't done this for a while, so here are the top 10 of the year so far - Week 37

1) Weeknd - Save Your Tears - 2110 (35)+

2) Dua Lipa - Levitating - 1657 (37)+

3) Riton/Nightcrawlers/Mufasa/Hypeman - Friday - 1522 (31)

4) Tiesto - The Business - 1461 (30)

5) Joel Corry/Raye/David Guetta - Bed - 1407 (28)+

6) Weeknd - Blinding Lights - 1370 (37)+

7) Kid Laroi - Without You - 1350 (27)

8) Lil Nas X - Montero (Call Me By Your Name) - 1349 (24)+

9) Tom Grennan - Little Bit Of Love - 1346 (31)+

10) Glass Animals - Heat Waves - 1312 (36)+

(Weeks on chart)
+ = still on chart

Glass Animals not only reach the weekly top 10 for the first time this week, but also the Chart Impact Points chart of the year (above). 3 singles have been on chart all year (37 weeks), the 3rd is Joel Corry/MNEK - Head & Heart at #12 with 1194 points.

The big #1s of the year are surprisingly:
Bad Habits #34, 825 points+
Driver's License #14, 1184

One blighted by being so new, the other by competition from album tracks and the 3-track rule.

With 15 weeks to go, the maximum a new hit can have is 1125 points, unable to hit the top 10 even with all 15 weeks at #1! Likewise, Save Your Tears is so far ahead it will be on top for at least the next 7 weeks with the hypothetical situation of Leveitiating being #1 for all that time, which of course won't happen.

avatar

Foxes

6

Not quite sure how these are calculated lol but here's the official list from OCC (for the first half of the year, we should get another update at the start of next month):

1) Olivia Rodrigo - 'drivers license' (1,030k)
2) Nathan Evans, 220 KID, Billen Ted - 'Wellerman' (713k)
3) Tiësto - 'The Business' (640k)
4) Lil Nas X - 'MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)' (638k)
5) The Weeknd - 'Save Your Tears' (637k)
6) Dua Lipa - 'Levitating' (???)
7) Riton, Nightcrawlers ft. Mufasa & Hypeman, Dopamine - 'Friday' (629k)
8) Russ Millions, Tion Wayne - 'Body' (626k)
9) The Kid LAROI - 'WITHOUT YOU' (613k)
10) Olivia Rodrigo - 'good 4 u' (???)

Very likely that 'Bad Habits' and 'good 4 u' are both Top 5, if not Top 3, by now, but, like I said, we'll get another update next month.

avatar

Half Giant- Ethan

4

Bad Habits will be number one and good 4 u number three.

It's calculated by their official positional changes week on week. 75pts for #1, 74 for #2 down to 1pt for #75. With streaming, ACR and the 3-single rule, comparing this method to the official sales chart shows the impact of such artificial chart manipulation. Much more pronounced than in the physical era when such rules were not in place.

It's also a method I used to see how big or small a hit is, even when full sales data is not published or difficult to obtain. OCC (and earlier publications like Guinness Hit Singles) used to count number of weeks as a scale of chart impact where a #1 is equal to a #75 and everything in between. This makes it a bit more accurate, but also interesting to compare to the sales chart which ones gained a lot of "chart impact" with fewer sales by charting for a long time lower down the chart, and those that has a lot of sales in a short period (e.g. a big-selling #1).

It highlights the #1s that were hyped and those that more genuine long-term favourites with the public, if they didn't have an instant impact.

Hey everyone! I've read these comments for years, but this is the first time I've said anything lol
Anyway, I'm interested in starting a podcast where we discuss the weekly charts, review the songs, look at past charts, discuss interesting stories etc. I'm basically asking two questions here: 1) Would anyone actually listen? 2) Is there anyone out there (comfortable on a mic) who would be interested in getting involved? :)

Bad Habits, Stay and Remember are definitely going onto ACR, meaning it'll be between 'Girls Like Girls', 'Shivers' and 'Obsessed With You', judging by day 1 spotify. I would imagine, however, that Shivers has the upper edge based on sales, despite being behind Drake on streams.

Better week for the amazing ABBA on the German chart where DONT SHUT ME DOWN is at number 5 and the beautiful I STILL HAVE FAITH IN YOU at number 3!! Furthermore IRON MAIDEN is at number 1 in the album chart and the overrated drake at only number 6: that is what i like to see!!

In Sweden ABBA are at No.1 and No.2, in the Singles Chart. 'Don't Shut Me Down' is only their 4th No.1 Single there. Their 1st since 'Summer Night City' in 1978. They didn't Release a lot of their Singles in Sweden. Hence the low Total of No.1 Hits.

Yeah Yeah Yeah the king is still at #1. So very :) :) :) With all the buzz surrounding Abba, one would expect their songs to be much higher than it is. After all, did they not have so many hundreds of steaming, and from 18 to 24 years old, so they say, not to mention over a million views each songs received, and how the songs were both going to debut in the top 10, and every one talking how great the songs were blah blah blah and finally, when all the dust has settled, one sees things more clearly and another group been inflated by the buzz from a pretend bee and in the end nothing much to talk about. My personal opinion, I would not pay 5cents for one song, actually make that for both songs.

avatar

Mark Wislen

5

Sarah - It is almost impossible for 'Old' Acts to have UK Top 10 Singles now. ABBA have done very well to get anywhere near the Top 10. That's why Madonna, has not managed a UK Top 10 Single since 2009 and Kylie Minogue has not had one since 2011. ABBA's 'Voyage' Album has more UK Advance Orders, than any previous Universal Album. So, that does not quite fit in, with your attempts to say that ABBA's popularity is exaggerated. Their 'Voyage' Album will be huge, in the UK - and elsewhere. By the way, the 2 Singles are Top 5 in Germany and several other Countries. The UK Charts are not the only ones. Also, the 'ABBA Gold' Album, has just become ABBA's first, to reach 30 Top 5 Weeks, in the UK.

avatar

Well, in this day and age most singles by big get all the attention in the first week, and never really start at the bottom and work their way up. Songs by small or medium artists climb, like Heat Waves and The Business. If a song is truly amazing it'll grow and then peak later

Edition 1: Love To Lose (2020)- Sandro Cavazza ft. Georgia Ku

I know was so hoping 'better days' would be a huge hit, its one of his best. Hopefully next week, its so hard for great tracks to make it big these days, why do so many listen to new stuff by Kanye or Drake and then don't bother the week after and then less the next week, I don't see how that is popular as if it was the same or more people would listen as it was a great track? Taken Glass Animals forever to scale the chart but its definitely a popular track (even though there are of course those who dislike but nobody can mistake its popularity with the way it has risen and risen). Anyway was off on one then, to next week Dermot, it took forever for you to get noticed last time but your tracks got there in the end

Yes I have to agree I'm not really into Drake or Kanye West, I think the only track of Drake's I like was hotline bling it was really original at the time but all his stuff since then is the same kind of thing. Kanye had a good start and has a far better back catalogue imo but I just don't see anything that has interested me since his album with Jay-Z which I thought was a great take mashing up many genres. Hopefully big rise next week for Dermot though!

Anyway, I really hope ‘Better Days’ can go Top 40 next week, given how close it was today. :)

DON'T SHUT ME DOWN should have been our new number 1 single!! Only at 9 this week!! I love the single

oh yeah, i forgot to acknowledge this as i was being dragged into beef yet again...

it’s so nice to see abba back! they have some legendary songs. sure, their two new tracks are nowhere near the best they’ve done but it’s so refreshing to see a timeless act finally back. :)

welcome back. 🇸🇪

With ABBA's Don't shut me down making the Top 10 this week is that the longest time between Top 10 singles "Waterloo" being 1974 making the gap of 47 years between them Both....Just wondering Tim an ABBA Fan of 49 years...

Might depend on how technical you want to be. I'm American, so I don't know much about Cliff Richard. But he could be said to have about 50 years between "Move It" and "Thank You for a Lifetime." However, "Move It" was as The Drifters. If you limit him to having the exact same artist credit (i.e. also denying any "and the Shadows" singles), I think ABBA beats him out by a few months, as his solo career goes from "When the Girl in Your Arms is the Girl in Your Heart" to "Thank You for a Lifetime.", which is also 47 years, but not as long as ABBA's 47 years.

Paul McCartney would have a claim if Beatles hits were allowed. I can't find anyone that definitely has longer than 47 years without an asterix

AR

Anthony Rogers

Move it was released as " Cliff Richard and the Drifters ", so he did get billing.

You have missed Elvis Presley, Heartbreak Hotel, 1956 to Way Down 2005, makinf 49 years.

If we were doing top 20 instead of top 10, then it might be Vera Lynn with 'Forget Me Not' (1952) to 'Land of Hope and Glory' (2020).

I don't think anyone has as long a gap as Abba without going into reissues, performing with different acts (either Drfters or Beatles), or releasing archive singles. It's the longest gap of newly recorded top 10s with the same lineup. Can't think of anyone who had hits in the last 10 years and earlier than the 80s.

so happy to see Becky climbing 5 spots. I thought that with all that brand new entry she was supposed to go off the top 40 (only 4 songs climbed this week, actually: Becky, Elton/Dua, David Guetta and Glass Animals).
love Heat Waves but for me its time has gone.
Industry Baby deserves to be in the top 3.
not gonna say a thing about Drake because the last time I did I got downvoted lol.

1

it’s not even that anthony, me and a few others that comment here are just sick of seeing his name at number 1. for me, 11 weeks is too much for any song, even songs i love. sorry if i ever offended you but i had a long day today and had to vent. i’ll give ed this though, visiting hours was good and i wouldn’t mind if that was his chart topper for 2021 instead of bad habits.

AR

Anthony Rogers

1

OK, CoolOcelot, thanks for that.
I am sorry if I upset you but as a new member/ commenter I get fed up with people knocking an artist who has a long stretch at number 1. It's not the artist who is making themselves number 1, it's the public.

You have to remember though that songs have been number 1 for a lot longer than Ed's.... 1n 1955 we had a number one for 18 weeks, and in the 90's there were long runs from Bryan Adam's and Wet Wet Wet.

Take care

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

1

oh no, you haven’t upset me anthony. i understand that you get fed up with me saying things like this and i’ll try to stop. and yes, i’m aware of previous long-running number ones, i witnessed a 14-week number 1 in 2017 courtesy of another of ed’s tracks and a 11-weeker in 2019. and not forgetting bryan adams and wet wet wet.

The fact that we have songs by ABBA & Elton John in the Top 20 (the former of which have one in the Top 10) of a late 2021 chart is honestly so satisfying, especially as someone coming from a younger generation who never got to experience music when both of these artists were at their peak!

So glad to see older, classic artists making a resurgence in the singles chart, especially in an era dominated by streaming. :)

I hope Elton can make the top 10 next week .
That will mark 50 1/2 years of top 10 hits.

Do you think he will Piran, as you are more knowledgeable than me on the charts of nowadays.

NC

Nigel Coleman

2

I think Elton John and Dua Lipa P'Nau Remix will hit the Top 10 next week?
It is the most downloaded song for the past week, probably Dua Lipa fans downloading it rather than Elton John fans who would prefer a Physical Copy?
I have been a Diehard Elton John fan for the past 48 years and is enjoying him being back in the charts?
I think it will make the Top 5, but not sure if they will make No1?

GF

Green Face

Nice to see them back, but I think their new songs . 🤢

avatar

Blank

1

Don't forget, not only Abba but Elton John is also having their 2nd top 20 this year: Step Into Christmas hanging over at #8, and a 2nd new hit at #47 (It's A Sin with Years & Years).

avatar

Piran

1

It could be a second Top 10 for Elton by next Friday! :O

avatar

Piran

2

I think it’s likely, given how strong his sales are & the fact that consecutive rap albums that had tracks debuting high that have pushed it down!

I think it could go Top 10 next week though if steaming doesn’t drop off a lot for it. :)

avatar

Piran

I couldn't be more agree on your comment Piran, its so unfair for popular and classic artists yo not have the chance of getting hits in the top 40 due to streaming

avatar

Piran

1

I agree with streaming being such a major component of the chart formula, since that’s how almost everyone listens to music nowadays, but I wish more classic artists were successful there (as well as on sales, obviously). :)

avatar

Piran

1

I wish I could’ve been there when they were at their peak though, haha. :)

AR

I really hoped that Diana Ross ' Comeback had have had more impact on the charts. Her comeback single " Thank you " was a perfect piece of soul , something that seems to have disappeared totally now from the charts. Perhaps she will fare better when the album is released later this month.

avatar

Piran

0

Is it bad that I didn’t even know she released a new single? :(

AR

Anthony Rogers

0

I forgive you ( just this once lol 😁 )
It was supposed to be released last year . She was going to do a European tour including Glastonbury which got cancelled. So she put the single off until this year when she was going to do the Lytham festival, this got cancelled to.

As you're probably aware by now I am baffled by the charts nowadays but it got to number 16 on the British iTunes chart and number 18 on the British Amazon chart.
I would have thought that was a good enough showing to warrant a low position in the top 100 but, alas no.
