U JUST DONT KNOW NOWADAYS WHAT YOUNGSTERS LISTEN TO EVEN IN THE NEWSPAPER CRITICISING LACK OF MUSIC WITH THE OLD STUFF STILL ON TOP Music has definitely died

DK

Dave Knight

0

I was always a believer any style or music of any age deserves a chance of being a hit single, thats the whole point of music. Its pointless if we just allow music in the charts from artists under the age of lets say 30. And indeed any old track or past hit deserves to have a comeback. I was surprised to learn recently that there is an apparent rule that if a track is over 3 years old, it requires even more streams or downloads for it to gain a good chart position. Hence why 3 lions stalled at number 4. It should have easily been number 1. So in that respect you're dead right music has kind of died. The whole thing today breeds ageism. Which isnt fair at all.

AG

Alison Green

-1

Didnt really mean Ageism Its the fact that the same songs are endless This week top 4 is unchanged Somethings not right Same #1 Some songs are two years old

Can't believe that Katy Perry's amazing song Electric didn't chart even top 100...what has happened to her career??

DK

I blame streaming. Had her single been released on physical format this would never have happened. To me her fan base is strong, but lots of people still dont like streaming, me included. The fact you need to be connected to the internet is a no no for lots of people. Poor wifi or signal for example.

hi all,

if you were wondering why i’ve been absent for the weekend, it’s cause i’m having a weekend away with family. i don’t know if i’ll send any more comments besides this one, but i hope you’re all well.

as such, i will not be posting top 40 rankings, but i’ll share my thoughts on the chart:

bad habits at number 1 is not a good sight to see at all, apparently it’s sold more in its 2nd week than i don’t care did in its 2nd week atop the charts so we’re in for a long run... boo.
so pleased that oliver twist is out of the top 10.
as for the top 40 debuts, wasting time is a great r&b tune, wish it didn’t debut so low as it’s so chilled. it’s way better than kevin mccallister at least, that songs not good at all... but at the same time it’s not bad either, i’m indifferent on it.

hope you all had a nice weekend! :)

2

I know right! That’s my favourite song of the week, it deserves a lot more, sadly I doubt it’ll increase next week

DK

Dave Knight

1

To put it another way, by letting the listener or streamer make the songs hits, by the time they are hits there is no time left to make a video for the single or track or make any kind of promotional play, its a bit like streaming has made everything work in reverse to how it once was. This needs desperately changing back or reach a comparable compromise.

DK

Dave Knight

2

I was hoping now that England are in the final the song Give us a goal by Slade would be number 1 or at least in the top 10. Has anyone checked it out?

Just wanted to put this out there to see peoples reaction. Do you think music will benefit from a regular music chart show similar to the Top of the pops format, but obviously updated for the new generation.
I just tend to think there is little or no platform for artists to play on to be seen visually these days. I know we have music channels, but its not the same as seeing an artist in a live situation, and not a typical video.
Now that the charts are updated on a Friday instead of the traditional Sunday evening, I would suggest a Friday night chart program.
Any thoughts on this?

J

jack

6

Good Idea, would give a chance for artists to gain a new audience from a TV show, have it on later so the family can sit and watch. I would love for artists like Maneskin too to come on!

DK

Dave Knight

5

Thanks jack, I agree, it would be great to actually see artists in person so to speak compared to a highly produced video. The only time we are treated to this these days is on the Christmas Top of the pops. But I have felt for quite a few years there is a market for this to make a comeback especially as a lot of young listeners are actually jumping on the vinyl comeback bandwagon.
Ideally the program would start after 7 on a Friday night just literally after the charts has been updated and fresh in peoples minds. Compared to in the old days the chart run down was on Sundays and yet we had to wait until Thursdays to watch Top of the pops which in hindsight was a bit too long to have to wait to see the visual version of the charts, already 4 days too late, and only 3 away from a refreshed chart, so that would need to be looked at. Maybe a Monday show would be ok, not sure, what do you think?

AR

Anthony Rogers

2

Good idea, but the trouble nowadays is that there are just too many album tracks ks in the chart. It's not a singles chart anymore.

DK

Dave Knight

3

Anthony that is true, but in my madness I was thinking a regular chart show would regulate this into something more solid as the charts used to be and even add the variety back, as the feel or hunger for different styles would return. Remember in the 70's and 80's we had so many different styles of music all in the same top 40. Country, Rock, Metal, Pop, Reggae, Ska, Mod, to name just a few. Now to me the charts sound like it could be all from one artist or producer virtually with the odd exception. I just feel we need that visual thing back. In fact from a personal level I could not recognise 90% of the artists in the top 100. Just a few exceptions like Ed Sheeran, and a few others, I know their songs but couldn't put a face to them, but that has to be a sad sign of the times. And I love all kinds of music.

DK

Dave Knight

2

Plus the quality control has been handed to the listener which used to be done by some record company executive who probably decided which order tracks are listed on an album. Another factor where music is going down hill. These things used to be ironed out between artist and record company. But your right otherwise obscure album tracks are now making the official singles charts which isnt good for the industry to control. Or understand how to promote.
To put it another way its embarrassing for an obscure album track to be a number 1 single for example because it highlights the lack of potential control that would typically be needed to choose the strongest song before its released to be a single , so makes a mockery of a record company and makes them wonder where do they spend the money on videos for example.
I mean can you imagine this madness happening in the 80's?
It would have reshaped the whole way we look back on our favourite era's and periods.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Or maybe some amazing album tracks which were better that the released tracks might have been bigger hits and gained a greater audience? It is poor that album tracks can chart but a record company should clearly see what the public actually likes then release it as a single. Just think Harry Styles 'watermelon sugar' may not have been released as a single it was sheer listening from people with the album so got made to be the next single and it is by far the greatest song from his last album, ots even back again now.

J

jack

2

I think Friday night would be the best time, and actual live music unlike TOTP’s was preferabbly.

DK

Dave Knight

0

Yeah but Harry Styles latest song Treat people with kindness which got loads of exposure didnt even touch the top 100, how can that happen in todays climate?

avatar

Rob Parkinson

0

Because people decide which tracks they listen to and not the record companies?

DK

Dave Knight

1

But when you concider how popular Harry Styles is, to think that one of his planned singles can fail to touch the top 100 which actually got good exposure, he even sang it on comic relief is quite shocking. You'd have thought enough of his fans would buy it, download it or stream it. But it seems in this current streaming era a chance for a hit single is actually more likely to slip away compared to when fans actually bought the physical product. Theres been a few upsets I have noticed recently, take Rita Ora or Katy Perry, both high profile artists in their own right, yet their last few singles only just got inside the top 100. Now you got to ask the question where are their so called fans?

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Pretty simple, if you release a song just because the record company liked it, it ain't going to do well, it's more a case of if the public like it. Personally I think Rita Ora has declined massively in public opinion due to her reportedly throwing money at a restaurant so she could throw a huge 30th birthday party during lockdown, perils of being a celebrity these days, everything is under the microscope and throw things in people's faces has a lasting effect.

DK

Dave Knight

0

Dont get me wrong I am not a Harry Styles fan, I like Rock music at heart, but I thought the song Treat people with kindness was actually quite good and catchy. And had top ten written all over it. Its as if fans are not fans anymore, or dont have the platform to be. If I was a fan of a artist I automatically support them by buying their next single before I have even heard it cause Im bound to like it. Or in the old days we had b-sides as an alternative track so we had 2 chances the single wouldn't be a waste of money. This sort of thing is greatly missing today. Fans are not in my opinion going to just stream a song to death to help the artist. Its a lost cause from the start.

avatar

thierry henon

2

hi Rob! I do agree with you regarding RITA ORA..Shame really..she is so talented and i reckon much better than DUA lipa who i can't stand..she has a great voice but all of her songs are so similar..

DK

Dave Knight

2

I am amazed 3 Lions has stalled at number 4. Even Ed was willing it to number 1. I think its down to the way streaming is dominating the top 100. Most England fans will want the physical product or download it, but those dont seem to contribute to the official charts anymore. You can be number 1 in the download or physical charts and not be even inside the official top 100. Its basically dominated by streaming now which is sad really as it requires billions of listens to be in the top 10 these days. Quite sad really especially for the artists.

avatar

Half Giant- Ethan

4

It would’ve reached number one had it not been for acr

DK

Dave Knight

1

Sorry whats acr?

avatar

Dan Love

2

ACR is Accelerated Chart Ratio, if a song is more than 3 years old essentially it's streams are halved, so for example instead of 600 Spotify streams counting for a sale, 1200 Spotify streams are required for a sale. A single moves onto ACR if it is

a) more than 3 years old
b) 10+ weeks old and declined for 3 consecutive weeks

DK

Dave Knight

0

I must admit I never knew that. That rule seems unfair, surely everything deserves a chance at number 1 regardless of age?

R

Riley

0

However if a song has a 25% boost compared to the previous week it gets reset and goes off acr then after 3 weeks in decline once again it goes back on acr, it happened with
watermelon sugar and believe me. It is silly rule but I can understand why they do it as songs like blinding lights and head and heart would still be in the top 25 without it but it’s a true reflection of how things are

DK

Dave Knight

0

But setting silly rules like that ends up making the charts a farce.

DK

Dave Knight

It is a silly rule, surely everything deserves a chance or it device's the idea of a chart

World in motion is by EnglandNewOrder and originally got to No1, not No22, you would think the OCC would know this !!

avatar

MrDannyDoodah

3

It looks like the majority of versions of this available on streaming (and I presume therefore also on downloading) are credited to 'New Order' rather than 'Englandneworder' and that the OCC have thus reported it that way since the digital era, and due to the difference in artist names the database considers the digital re-remergences as a separate entity.

avatar

Venezia24

2

As MrDannyDoodah says, it’s due to the primary song being streamed (or downloaded) is the track from New Order’s Best-Of album. EnglandNewOrder as a #1, but the current track is being treated as a new release.

We occasionally get this with other tracks where the ‘Serial Number’ or label on re-release has changed even though the song is exactly the same. As well as chart position, week numbers also get impacted by the same effect. Last Christmas is a good example of that, which for a long time did not seem to register its #2 status (when it was a Double A with ‘Everything She Wants’).

I also find it annoying...

The OCC will count them all together when talking about overall equivalent sales as they have to due to the format shift.

Hope England don't "throw it away".

His track 'sweet Caroline' has become a football anthem in its own right for England as fans generally sing it at matches

Piran

1

Glad you liked the emojis! I might do that here more often, haha. :)

I think the three songs rule should definitely only be applied to albums tracks, but not official singles, since that was the whole reason that it got introduced in the first place!

I just find it ironic how Ed was the reason that we have ACR in the first place & yet, without it, 'Three Lions' could've been #1 instead of 'Bad Habits'.

Yeah, it's been a mix of emotions for us this week! On one hand, it was so disappointed to come extremely close to the title & lose it, but on the other hand, the fact that we even made the final to begin with is amazing, given that we've only been there once before in a major international tournament. :)
