The sales Chart is better than this chart

Don't start now is an absolute 10/10 for me. It's a total blaze
Gerry Adams is a modern day pr
I was just thinking how pewdiepie hasn't made the charts considering their popularity and how you can stream them

The reason why I think that the sales Chart is the proper chart is because there are some good songs on it. For example Freddie Mercurys new version of Time (Waits for no one) was in the sales chart and not the official singles chart. and last week, Thriller by Michael Jackson and Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr were in the sales chart but not the official singles Charts.
FG
Frank Griffin
I have been looking at the Charts from 2008 and to be honest there were some good songs released back then.
FG
Frank Griffin
People should look at the sales chart more often because the official
singles chart is turning into a joke. All you see on here is singles and
Album tracks. Shotgun by George Ezra which is #87 has been in the top
100 for over a year now. The official Charts should stop counting
streams and focus on sales. I prefer looking at the singles chart from
the 1980s because there are some good songs on them and none of them
charts have album tracks just singles. Back In late 2015, Justin Bieber
dominated the singles charts and I will tell you why that happened,
because it is everybody's fault for listening to his songs on his album
purpouse. If you guys just listened to one Justin Bieber song back then,
you wouldn't of seen so many Justin Bieber songs in the singles chart.
It's like back in the 1980s when Michael Jackson was popular. I know
streaming was not around the 80s but if it was you all would of made it
so Michael Jackson dominated the Charts. For example, when the Thriller
album came out way back 1982 and streaming was to be around back then,
you would of all listened to his tracks from that album most of Charts
would of been Mostly Michael Jackson songs like as it was end of June
and all of July 2009 after his death. I am fed up of people just moaning
about if a certain artist dominates the Charts. The Official Charts
should stop counting streams but that will never happen. So when an
artist releases a new album, just listen to one song!
akyovbashiev
Someone made a similar comment to you on last week's sales chart, and I responded with the following message, edited for context and expanded:
The sales charts, which you refer to as 'the proper charts', account for a total of... oh. 3% of Britian's music consumption. So, like, a little under 600,000 sales for all singles purchased/downloaded last week. The top-streamed track on Spotify had more streams than that just today.
What you mean to say is that you prefer to follow the sales chart to the official one, as it includes more songs that are to your liking, which is absolutely fine. But claiming it's the 'proper chart' is like me claiming my own CrownNote chart that I compile weekly, based on my own music taste, is the entire world's only official chart, because... I said so?
Oh, and by the way, that track 'Shotgun' that you're supposedly annoyed by because it's been in the official top 100 for 85 weeks? It's also been in the official sales chart for 80 of those. And is currently sitting higher over there than on the official one.
akyovbashiev
Oh, and I just happened to read this excellent piece of genius thought, extracted from your comment:
"So when an artist releases a new album, just listen to one song!"
Yes, suggesting that people should choose one specific song from every single album (despite most consisting of around 10-15 songs) is pure genius. It doesn't matter if you like the artist in general and want to listen to all of his songs, or maybe you just happen to enjoy two or three pieces of work from the entire thing - well, you can't, and shouldn't, because...
I lost my train of thought here, but I can't be bothered to continue it, because this suggestion is actually that stupid.
Piran
So to summarise, you're saying that the sales chart should be the proper one just based on what songs you think are better? So, in other words, you want a chart to represent the UK's musical preference based on your sole opinion, rather than what is actually being consumed? Like Akyovbashiev said below, that would be the equivalent of putting my personal chart as the UK's Official Chart, which is obviously utterly ridiculous!
Why should older people's music tastes outweigh all other age groups? Exactly, they shouldn't.
Even then, 'Dance Monkey' was the best-selling song of the past week with 11,450 downloads... the song that's #200 on Spotify right now got four times that figure in audio streams, just on yesterday's numbers alone! If that doesn't indicate how much bigger streaming is compared to sales, I don't know what will! That's the whole reason why Apple had to take over iTunes in the first place!
Also, was 'Dreamland' by Pet Shop Boys ft Years & Years really the fourth most popular song in the UK last week? Given that probably 99% of the country's population have never even heard of the song, nor have I heard it anywhere apart from YouTube so far, I think not.
It's alright though, it's not like OCC publish a sales chart each week to comment on, I get that.
Oh wait...

Piran
Yeah, that's honestly one of the funniest comments I've ever seen on here! :D
The whole point of albums even existing is for the listener to check out multiple songs by the same artist in succession!
Even if in some bizarre world, we actually did listen to only one song per album, it still doesn't change the fact that they would land multiple entries in the singles chart, since different people would check out different tracks.
akyovbashiev
Unfortunately, I did not have the time to prepare a review throughout the last week, so here's a short summary of the hot songs inside the top 40 and my ratings on them:
'Don't Start Now' - light 6/10
'This Is Real' - never reviewed this one before, but now that I've familiarized myself with it - light 7/10
'Tell Me' - strong 8/10
'Nice To Meet Ya' - also never reviewed this until now - strong 5/10
'G Love' - strong 7/10
To see my favorites of the week, check out my CrownNote chart! I didn't have time to post one last week, or check other people's charts (sorry everybody!) but I will this week - in the meantime, here's my new one: http://crownnote.com/charts/akyovbashiev/crystal-top-40-week-452019

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones & I continues its dominant run on the singles chart, with a sixth consecutive week at #1! It achieved 84,500 combined sales for the tracking week, consisting of 11,450 downloads (its highest weekly download figure so far!) & 9.33 million streams!
‘Orphans’ by Coldplay spends a second consecutive week atop the national airplay chart. ‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa is the top debut of the week on radio at #2!
On YouTube, ‘Dance Monkey’ is #1 for a fourth consecutive week, increasing 9.8% in weekly views to 4.02 million!
DUA LIPA - DON’T START NOW (#2)
One thing I’ve learnt while doing these chart reviews is to never underestimate Dua Lipa’s performance! Not only did she get a successful run with her own singles from her debut album, but her popularity became worldwide faster than a lot of British artists have! Regardless, after hearing ‘Don’t Start Now’, I’m convinced that this trend for her will continue! I mean, the obvious is that Dua Lipa sounds stronger than she ever has before, especially with that incredible vocal build-up to the anthemic hook, but her delivery also allows the groove to fully stand out here! I’ve heard many people compare the production of this song to ‘Electricity’, but I’m reminded more of 90s disco or funk when you listen carefully to the guitar licks, which is even more impressive for me! Of course, in classic Dua Lipa fashion, she’s a complete professional at getting over nasty men, stating here that if she no longer cares for them, why should they care about her? Honestly, while November might be one of the dullest months of the year in general, at least we got this to make up for it! So glad to have you back Dua… light 9/10!
KREPT & KONAN, D-BLOCK EUROPE & LING HUSSLE - TELL ME (#23)
When you listen to a Top 40 UK chart countdown in 2019, it’s almost a given that there’ll be at least one British rap song debuting, almost all of which are collaborations! Although, we’ve got a case where you have a group I generally like, along with one I really don’t & a female singer that I actually never heard of before. Sadly, I feel like there was a lot of wasted potential in this song! The moments that I actually got some enjoyment out of, including Ling Hussle’s smooth voice & the playful production on the hook, are rather short lived! Unfortunately, both groups add very uninteresting lyrics, while the mixing around Krept & Konan’s vocals is horrendous, with the same problem applying to D-Block Europe, except with a choppy delivery that really kills the mood of the song. In other words, this is the perfect example of “too many cooks spoil the broth” when it comes to these kind of collaborations. Very light 4/10!
KREPT & KONAN FT WIZKID - G LOVE (#28)
I'll admit that I actually forgot to catch this debut, both on the chart show & looking through the refreshed Top 100 here! Thankfully, this is the better of the two songs from the duo that debuted this week, although unfortunately not by that much! I do think the connection between both members is certainly there, especially with more original production for the group. That said, why do they sound so bored here? Also, when they don't sound bored, why are the vocals so warbled? Again, I think this tells me that while Krept & Konan work well as the two of them, they might struggle by themselves. At least this has a very chilled atmosphere to it, so I'm giving this a strong 5/10!
M HUNCHO FT NAFE SMALLZ - THUMB (#30)
Okay, so this is team-up any better? Sadly, no, not at all! For as much as the skittering beat has a more lively melody than I was anticipating, there is way too much auto-tune going on here! That said, we then have some of the most disgusting lyrics I’ve come across for any song in 2019, including encounters like the two of them putting their thumbs in a girl’s ! So yeah, I might settle into the more gentle & relaxed rhythm as the song progresses, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is still incredibly immature & features some of the grossest content of the year so far. For goodness sake, at least Kanye made me laugh last week with his virtual Chick-Fil-A commercial! This might not have been the best week for debuts, but I’ll take almost anything else over this right now, because this is trash! Light 2/10!
AJ TRACEY & SKEPTA - KISS & TELL (#31)
Thankfully, if there are two artists whose songs just end up growing on me with every listen, it’s AJ Tracey & Skepta, so I actually went in with much stronger expectations this time round. That being said, the general vibe I’m getting is that while this is by no means disappointing, nothing really screams out as all that special either. Starting with AJ Tracey & Skepta themselves, where not only do I dig how both of them rap back-to-back with one another, the AJ Tracey was actually able to match Skepta on the level of intensity he brings too! Even beyond that, both of them have such slick rapping skills & if you think that the songwriting might be generic, it’s certainly not, as both artists seem to imply that they don’t want to say too much about the relationships they’ve had with the women they’ve been with. If anything let’s this down at all, it’s that the sparkling tone is not the right fit for the knocky trap beat at all, especially when the latter has been so overused as it is. Still, I thought this mostly worked as it is, so for that, light 7/10!
THE CAST OF RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE UK - BREAK UP BYE BYE (#35)
While this’ll almost certainly be its only week here, I still don’t think anybody expected this to perform as well as it did! It’s for that reason that I’m kind of unsure what to say when reviewing this, because it’s certainly not the type of song that you’d critically review. That said, I’ll do it like it do all Top 40 entries & look, I really wanted to enjoy this, but it got old fast throughout just this past week alone! Sure, I’m really happy that this will inevitably give the LGBTQ+ community in British music a big boost, but there are so many flaws throughout here. Firstly, between the production that’s trying & mostly failing to be bombastic, along with the cringy vocals, it feels not far removed from a really cheaply constructed K-Pop song. Yes, I certainly see the appeal between the chemistry between the members & especially their jokey attitudes, since this was always intended to be a fun break-up song, even if there are some very questionable lines scattered about here. That said, if I’m going to listen to songs that promote same-$ex relationships, I’ll listen to something with actual punch like ‘I Kissed A Girl’ by Katy Perry or something with a deeper meaning from the heart like ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore. Yeah, I hate to say it, but while ‘Break Up Bye Bye’ is certainly a unique chart entry, it just got very annoying in record time. For that, solid 3/10!
POUNDZ - 0PP TH0T (#37)
On the other hand, I’m slightly more ambivalent when I see a newer grime or drill artist break into the Top 40, since the two genres can be so unpredictable (as you can tell by my wide range of ratings for each of them here!). Okay, in this case, I never actually knew what an “0pp th0t” was before hearing this, but apparently it’s defined as a woman with negative energy who have many $exual encounters. So, I guess in that sense, I like how Poundz mentions that he would never want to pursue anything with these kind of women, although at the same time, he could convey that positivity a lot more in both his rapping & just the atmosphere of the song as a whole, especially when you have two primary beats that don’t blend with each other that well at all! Thankfully, Poundz himself might just be the best part of the song! His rapid flow is always something I look for in this kind of song & outside of the standard bragging about cars, there is at least some clever wordplay, particularly in the punchlines that connect a lot better than I’d have expected them to! So yeah, I’m not expecting anything massive from this unless a big remix happens, but I feel like I’d be indifferent regardless. So for that, solid 5/10!
Literally “from out of nowhere”, Jeff Lynne’s ELO secure their #1 studio album since ‘Time’ from back in 1981! Elsewhere, the 2019 Children In Need compilation album was the best-selling album of the week.
The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘KIWANUKA’ by Michael Kiwanuka (debuts at #2), ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ by Ed Sheeran (6-3), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (7-4, 23 weeks in Top 5) & ‘Revenge Is Sweet’ by Krept & Konan (debuts at #5).
Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Better Half Of Me’ by Tom Walker, ‘This Is How [We Want You To Get High]’ by George Michael, ‘I Feel Love’ by Sam Smith, ‘Paper Cuts’ by Dave, ‘Must Be’ by J Hus, ‘Pump It Up’ by Endor, ‘Roxanne’ by Arizona Zervas & maybe even more.
Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend.

Also, 'Home To You' didn't chart at all?
Really disappointed there. :(

I'm fuming to see Dua not debuting at #1. Every other new entry foe this week was so lame.
Brandon Mwinga
I'm glad for Dua Lipa she's actually became my artist of all time she's confident and voice. Don't Start Now for it's debut 10/10 I hope she reaches higher. Will aalso update on my personal chart and South Africa top 40.Enjoy your weekend

Hie Piran I'm very impressed with your chart
1 Home To You its an amazing song to listen to.
I m happy to see our black coffee Drive at 25 (debut )
also Beyonce Brown Skin Girl bubbling under I could say your music taste is excellent

Wow really buzzing you picking up on tracks I mentioned upon release like 'drive' by black coffee, it's an amazing track and finally I your chart Piran!

Tony
Hi piran!
I defiantly like 'dance monkey' stay at number one, I didn't expect 'don't start now' to debut that high but I'm defiantly not complain. I've been a massive fan of Dua ever since before she released her debut album, so it's been so cool to watch her grow internationally! I did like the single but it's not my favourite song from her. Unfortunately, I'm defiantly not a fan of selena Gomez or coldplays new songs, I found 'lose you to love me' quite boring, I honestly don't want to sound like I'm trolling and while I don't hate it, I was a tiny bit disappointed. Can we just talk about how almost all the biggest songs of the summer this year left the top 40 this week! Sorry, Ladbroke Grove, 3 Nights and even Senorita left! Next week, 'dance monkey' will most likely stay at number one, I hope sigala manages a new entry in the top 40. Hope you have had a good week and an even better weekend
V
Vikingman
I guess Dance Monkey has dropped 1000 combined sales in the last week and will be on ACR in two weeks if this continues?
Kasper Elbjørn
How likely is it that George Michael gets his 37th UK Top 40 hit or the 25th top 10 hit? His is number one or two on most sales charts but we all know that hardly matters anymore.
NC
Nigel Coleman
I know Kasper? Sadly the likes of George Michael, Elton John, Keane will never have a hit single again due to downloads and steaming?
Let's face it how many bands these days do you see in The Top 100 cause we don't don't want a download or stream it, we want Physical Sales The record in our hands?
So we just have to wait until The Album comes out cause we can't have The Vinyl Single or The CD Single?
It really does sadden me when great artists and bands release great records and they don't stand a chance of making The Charts due to Physical Sales only Singles don't stand a chance with Download and Streaming counting towards the charts?
Streaming is not sales and now a days The Singles charts means nothing, cause you can pay just £10 a month and have access to millions of songs. What is this saying about The charts?
Answer pants?
Now you look at The Album Charts and it's a different story and in the old days you had to sale a million copies to get a platinum single?
NC
Nigel Coleman
I find The Charts unbelievable? George Michael Number 10 in The Sales Chart, but not even in The Top 100 on The Charts?
Where would Ed Sheeran be without Streaming, I don't think you need me to answer that one.
Damián
Absolutely agree. The same happens to Kylie, she would be big in the charts as she did in her whole career but for the download terms
Piran
Sadly, both are looking very unlikely now.
It's already down to #19 on iTunes in the third day of tracking for the upcoming week, while streaming is essentially non-existent! :(
Piran
Yeah, it would need to drop in combined sales for the next two consecutive weeks, then it gets moved to ACR.
Piran
Hey Tony! :)
'Dance Monkey's unfortunately starting to get a little old for me now! It's still a good song, but it's time to put something else at #1 now.
I do think that 'Don't Start Now' will go on to do massive things worldwide in the coming weeks, as well as potentially topping the singles chart here!
This was indeed a big week for dropouts, similar to last month when five songs in the Top 10 went on ACR at the same time ('Strike A Pose', '3 Nights', 'Sorry', 'Higher Love' & 'Ladbroke Grove').
Where we do have to agree are with the new Selena Gomez & Coldplay songs, where I'm really on board with both of them!
Thanks! I hope you have a nice week ahead too.
Piran
I'm glad you're liking my music taste so much right now! :D
Yeah, 'Drive' is going to be huge on my personal chart! Such a unique dance song, but with a really deep meaning at the same time.
Piran
I'm looking forward to seeing that! :D
Piran
Thanks so much Brandon! :)
I really hope 'Home To You' makes it onto your own chart, but the main reason that both 'Drive' & 'Brown Skin Girl' debuted are because of our discussions about them, with both being massive hits in South Africa of course.
Piran
'Don't Start Now' should be #1 on my personal chart next week & if it doesn't get surpassed by anything in the next two or three weeks, then it should go to the top of the charts in the UK too, since 'Dance Monkey' will be on ACR by that point.
Thanks! I hope you have a nice weekend too & I'll chat to you more on the Hot 100 article tomorrow. :)
Piran
Yeah, other than 'Don't Start Now' & possibly 'Kiss & Tell', this wasn't a good week for debuts at all. :/
Brandon Mwinga
I am hoping it too to debut at 1 on my personal chart to find out tomorrow, As Normani Motivation is still a banger I stream it a lot is still standing a chance to spend 8 weeks. As for South Africa top 40 will update tomorrow and my personal chart and I still owe you South African playlist you would find interesting to listen to maybe might soon debut on your chart.
Piran
So you update your chart on a Monday with the Hot 100 then? Cool, although mine comes on a Friday like the OCC charts do.
I'm very excited for that playlist! :)
Brandon Mwinga
yes on Mondays now on its suitable for me on Monday
Piran
Ah, fair enough. That's always my busiest day of the week, haha!

COLDPLAY new song is alreaday dropping! Shame really..like the song...the same goes for KATY PERRY, her new single should have climbed higher!!
Brandon Mwinga
Hie Thierry as for Coldplay I'm not liking the new song As for Katy Perry I thought she would reach higher. I guess Never Really over is my favourite the three .I still like Small talk and Harleys in hawaii
thierry henon
Like last week, baby girl LIZZO was at number 4 mid week but then again she is at 7!! So close to get her first Top 5 single!! Hopefully next week she will...
Ronald van Veen
Still at #7, not bad at all!
thierry henon
Selena Gomez should have been number 1!! Great song...Massive success in USA why not here??!!
AW
Adam white
Selena isn’t promoting the song that much in the uk.. she really should because this is her best song in a long and has potential to go number 1 with tv proformances
thierry henon
I really wanted DUA LIPA to be our number 1 single this week!! I can't believe the overrated monkey dance is still at number 1!! Thought RU PAUL will get a Top 20 single...was at 19 mid week but only made it to 35!! Glad JAX JONES ia climbing again the charts!
Damián
Hi Thierry!! Absolutely agree! That dance monkey is so overrated! Dua;s song is a banger! Really happy too to see that Ella Henderson, thanks to Jax Jones, gets a new top 20!

People should start looking at the sales chart as that is the proper Charts. George Michaels new posthumous single is at number 10 on the sales Charts.
akyovbashiev
Geniune question: do you consider George Michael's new single to be the 10th most popular song overall in the United Kingdom in the last week?
2pcj
"People should start looking at the sales chart as that is the proper Charts."
Start? That's how it was done for ages, but the world's moved on.
Why should the purchasing habits of primarily older consumers completely elide the streaming habits of mostly younger consumers?
Yolanda Merkel
posthumorous?
RC
Richard Clarkson
I agree with you The Sales Chart should be known as the proper chart and people don't like it then that's their problem. The sales Chart has better singles such as a few songs from the 80s. Dreamland by Pet Shop Boys feat. Years and Years should of been in the Official singles Chart as well as it is a good tune. I can't believe it dropped all the way down to number 76 in this weeks sales chart when in fact last week, it was number 4 in last weeks sales chart. What do you think to Now 104? I kind of like most of the tracks on it but my favourite is Ride it by Regard. I also like the re issue of Now 4 on CD which was originally released on Vinyl in November 1984. I hope George Michael's new posthumous single which is at number 10 in the sales chart gets to be in next weeks singles Chart. I have listened to it and to be honest I like it. So if people can't repect your opinion and accept the fact that the single sales chart is the proper chart then that's up to them. I agree with that though.
akyovbashiev
Nah, I think it's up to you and all other snowflakes, who think like you, to accept that your close-minded opinion of the sales chart being "the proper one" isn't even close to factual and doesn't coincide with anyone else, not even the majority of the entire market which consumes music today.
This right here, the article you're currently commenting on, contains the ONLY official chart of the United Kingdom - the proper one. And if you can't accept that, then that's exclusively up to you.
But not to worry, you can always compile your own music chart and drool all over your favorite Pet Shop Boys and George Michael tunes, then boast about your "superior" music taste to everyone else.
Piran
This might be the first week I'm actually a bit disappointed about 'Dance Monkey' being #1, because I really hoped 'Don't Start Now' would get there! That said, I'm not ruling out that happening the future & #2 is still an amazing start for Dua Lipa.
I love that massive jump for 'This Is Real' too, hopefully it's going to be a future Top 10 hit!
Full review coming shortly! :)
