when kygo & rita ora @39, song sold 13.000 copies .. it is too high for #39.. In 90's you could reach no.34 with 7000 copies.. I dont understand that how these no-name rappers can reach top 10 .. their youtube views are low

More accurately, it goes to show how irrelevant sales are now becoming. The #1 on the sales chart this week, 'Hold Me While You Wait', got 9,866 sales. They've already made it so that paid streams are worth 6x as much as free streams, and removing streams altogether would fail to represent the most popular songs in the UK, or the amount of money each song is actually making for the artist. Additionally, the streams:sales ratio of the chart aligns closely with how much money is made from a stream compared to a sale. With these facts in mind, how would you propose to make the chart less "ridiculous" when sales are becoming increasingly irrelevant with each passing week?

before streaming and before digital download sales we had bad times where old veteran artists sold 5000 copies of their single in the first week and reached the top 10

that was not fair...... and had nothing to do with popularity

Madonna's Medellin was the same though it managed to get to 86 in the top 100, older artist will struggle because their streaming numbers are low and Radio 1 won't play their music, so they'll struggle to get the younger audiences streaming numbers.

So these awful "songs" by Stormzy are now our popular music sadly. I'm a millennial and I am well aware of how bad current music is. But I truly believe charts are very inconsequential - no one will remember Vossi Bop, but Can't Get you Out of my head will remain a classic.

I am by no means a Kylie fan, I posted that as an example. Rock music is more my thing bu6t how many rock acts do you see in the chart these days yet try and get a ticket for a gig by them and they're sold out in hours. The charts used to refect the popularity of acts. Not anymore

(4) Hold Me While You Wait by Lewis Capadi is definitely one of my favourite releases of the week and I'm so glad it's in the top 5. It's really heartwarming and beautiful. Really wish it'll be number 1 soon, it is in Ireland.

(9) If I can't have you by Shawn Mendes isn't a bad song but not what I was expecting. Don't wanna say much but I find it difficult to put on repeat which is unlike every other Shawn Mendes single since "Stitches". It'll probably grow on me but for now 😴

(15) Homicide by Logic featuring Eminem. A collaboration that I didn't see coming but they both nailed it. Talking about haters and critics with a smooth flow like that (well..almost), I'm impressed. Logic's album "Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind" came out today and looking at the 2 singles proceding Homicide. I'm sure it'll be a banger.

(18) Guten Tag by Hardy Caprio. Not really the best I've heard all week but it's here so...

(34) M.E.N II by Bugzy Malone. Really love the storyline and the flow of the song. Talking about his journey to and through fame and everything else in between. Really hope other UK rappers would learn from the likes of Bugzy. I'm also very happy to see him get his first Top 40 entry. Left for me I'll switch this with "If I can't have you" (9).

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Vossi Bop’ by Stormzy is spending its second week at #1 on the singles chart! It was streamed over 11 million times across the country since last Friday, which is roughly 1.3 million plays more than ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X (at #2) received.

- ‘Me!’ by Taylor Swift ft Brendon Urie remains at #1 on the national airplay chart for a second consecutive week.

- Unsurprisingly, ‘Me!’ is also #1 on YouTube, receiving 4.91 million views across the country in its debut week.

- LEWIS CAPALDI – HOLD ME WHILE YOU WAIT (#4)
The fact that hardly anyone had heard of this guy a few months ago & now he has two songs in the Top 5 at the same time is truly impressive! Again, when I first heard this on the radio, I thought it was a James Arthur song, particularly the soulful delivery & primarily acoustic instrumentation. It’s clear that he’s singing from the heart as he appears to depict the end of a relationship, which makes this a fairly fitting sequel to ‘Someone You Loved’. It’s intriguing as to how this is both soothing & heart-breaking at the same time. I feel like the song moves along a bit too slowly to be absolutely fantastic, but there is definitely a big place for this on the British airplay charts. I’m giving this a light 8/10 at the moment!

- SHAWN MENDES – IF I CAN’T HAVE YOU (#9)
After looking back through Shawn’s discography, my reviews of his singles have been really polarising, especially his hits. Thankfully, this falls on the more positive end though & I can definitely see why this is making one of the biggest global debuts of his career so far! Most people have criticised this for being boring & while the plucky guitar might be getting a bit old by him, I’ll definitely support the pulsating, synth-driven production which sees Shawn tend to pop-rock more than he ever has before. Of course, the real reason why this is one of my favourites from him is his vocals, with the burst of raw intensity & especially the high note he hits towards the end of the song. I guess my only issue with this is that it reminds me a bit too much of ‘There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back’, which might be a bit of an issue given that Shawn is trying to go for as much variety as possible, but I’m still giving this a solid 8/10! That might be controversial, but what I think could cause much more of a debate in the comments is my review for this next song…

- LOGIC & EMINEM – HOMICIDE (#15)
Looking at the two rap names here, I really had hopes that this would amazing… but I’m sorry, this is far away from that standard! I can give credit to Logic for being able to have the same rap skills that Eminem brings to the table here, but outside of the quick, double-time rhymes, the rest of the song just falls apart for me. There’s no wittiness behind this like we’re used to from them & while the content implies that they are lyrically murdering their rivals & haters, the production is too choppy & flat for me to get more on board with this. The samples don’t seem to fit with the vibe of the song, while the punchlines don’t connect like they used to. Thankfully, both Logic & Eminem work so hard with their rapid-fire flows to pull this off, but only to a barely passable standard unfortunately. I’m thinking a solid 5/10!

- HARDY CAPRIO & DIGDAT – GUTEN TAG (#18)
With these two South London rappers, I’ve always been indifferent on them for the most part. They’ve done nothing interesting enough to make them good, but they haven’t disappointed me at all to make me think they’re bad. That said, I do feel like the rapping is my least favourite part of the song, even if the two of them do have some chemistry between each other. What I was more focussed on was the dreamy instrumental, especially the whistle that floats through the verses, accompanied by the fuzzy bass. The lyrics also seem to hit a good balance between being light-hearted & showing zeal. This might be better than I expected, but maybe I’d to see a bit more momentum & passion from both Hardy Caprio & DigDat going forward. As it is, still not bad by any means, solid 6/10.

- BUGZY MALONE – M.E.N ii (#34)
I had a feeling I’d be reviewing this soon enough, since it was creeping up the charts on a variety of streaming services. Honestly though, this is the kind of British hip-hop I’d welcome into the Top 40! Bugzy Malone’s story-telling seems to be very effective here thanks to his consistent flow & clear charisma, where he discusses his journey to fame & some of the new challenges he faces. The production from Z.Dot is a lot more upbeat than you would expect, which makes up for that Bugzy Malone might not be bringing a ton of energy, but that’s fine if you’re going into deeper & more personal content. You can also really notice his emotion when the track slows down with a beautiful melody & a discussion of a past relationship that sadly couldn’t last. You do feel like the song is going in about three or four different directions & I’m not completely sure if some of the switch-ups connect as well as they could, but overall, yeah, I think this is mostly fairly good! For me, this is a light 7/10 for now, but I could imagine that getting a little higher in the coming weeks.

- On the albums chart, ‘Hurts 2B Human’ by P!NK is #1 for a second week in a row. It becomes her first album to spend multiple weeks at the top.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Father Of The Bride’ by Vampire Weekend (debuts at #2), ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go’ by Billie Eilish (stationary at #3), ‘End Of Suffering’ by Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes (debuts at #4) & ‘The Greatest Showman [Soundtrack]’ (4-5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘I Don’t Care’ by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber, ‘Falling Like The Stars’ by James Arthur, ‘A Whole New World’ by ZAYN & Zhavia Ward, ‘Bullet From A Gun’ by Skepta, ‘Truth Hurts’ by Lizzo, ‘Greaze Mode’ by Skepta & Nafe Smallz, ‘Here We Go Again’ by Sigma ft Louisa, ‘Tough Love’ by Avicii ft Agnes & Vargas & Lagola, ‘Wanting’ by Not3s & maybe even more.

I still remember when "Grace" was charting and I was surprised. Now Capaldi has two songs in the UK Top 5 and is slowly but definitely making a place for himself now.

I'm expecting Ed and Justin's new song to debut straight at #1.

Also would be curious to see how James' new single does.

BTW seeing as the ESC is coming soon, I thought about this: What if we reviewed each other countries' ESC songs of the 2000s? So you'd do Finland and I'll the UK. It would give some perspective to it👍

Hey Piran! I absolutely love seeing 'Vossi Bop' stay at #1 for a 2nd week, though the gap between it and 'Old Town Road' was much smaller this week, like you predicted. Last week the gap was 11,114, while this week it was just 3,987. This year as a whole has had nothing but huge #1s, though - 'Old Town Road' has now sold over 80k for a 4th consecutive week, a figure which would normally guarantee a #1, and the lowest sales for a #1 single this year was 57,698 for 'Someone You Loved' on its 1st week at #1; every other week the #1 has gotten over 60k sales.
I actually like all of the debuts this week a good amount. I feel like 'Hold Me While You Wait' will grow on me like 'Someone You Loved' and 'Grace' did, but I still like it even now, and it'd give it a solid 7/10 for now. 'If I Can't Have You' isn't really one of my favourite Shawn Mendes songs, but I still do like the song, and I'd give it a strong 7/10. We definitely have very different opinions on 'Homicide', as I'd give it a strong 9/10. Logic and Eminem both do what they do best - bring fast, intense flows with complex lyricism, and I feel like it works extremely well. 'Guten Tag' would get a light 8/10 from me (I also like that it debuted at the exact same position in this chart as it did on my chart), while 'M.E.N II' would be a solid 7/10. I really like that Bugzy is representing the north for UK rap in the charts, since there's not enough of that. Almost all UK rappers that break into the charts come from London, and then we've got MIST from Birmingham, and Bugzy Malone from Manchester.
Looking ahead to next week, it was pretty obvious that 'I Don't Care' would be going to #1 as soon as the collaboration was announced, before the song even released, so it's not surprising to find it dominating on every platform. What I'm more interested in is seeing if it will break any records along the way. Biggest debut of 2019 seems inevitable, since currently it's '7 rings' with 126,240 sales, and 'I Don't Care' is doing bigger numbers than '7 rings' managed. I'm wondering if it'll manage to beat the weekly total streaming record of 16.9m held by '7 rings', or the weekly audio streaming record of 14.2m still held by 'Shape of You'. It's not quite doing as much on Spotify as 'Shape of You', even if it did manage to debut with the 3rd highest daily total ever in the UK, not including Christmas songs (https://urlzs.com/Sx7v7). It's just that Ed also holds the #1 & #2 spots with 'Shape of You' and 'Castle on the Hill', and the #4 spot with 'Galway Girl'. Bieber is also on the #5 song, 'Despacito (Remix)', meaning they hold the entire Top 5 between them. It's also not doing as much on YouTube as '7 rings', since it doesn't have an official video, so it might not manage to beat either of them. (Side note: 'I Don't Care' debuted with the highest global Spotify figure of all time, with 10,977,389, beating the 10,819,009 of 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'!).
Other than 'I Don't Care', 'Falling like the Stars' might have the highest debut since it's doing very well on sales, though it's not doing so well on streams, while 'Greaze Mode' is doing the best on streams, so that might manage to get the highest debut. 'Bullet From A Gun' is also doing pretty well, and 'Stay (Don't Go Away)' and 'Tough Love' might manage to debut as well. I think 'Motorola' by Da Beatfreakz has a chance as well, so overall it looks like it'll be a pretty busy week for debuts next week.

I think we all knew it would be nearly a certainty that 'I Don't Care' would be heading to #1 on Friday. That said, I wonder whether #2 will go to 'Vossi Bop' or 'Old Town Road'? I'd imagine the former would probably have a small edge for now.
Yeah, I'm glad we're getting more nationwide rap success, rather than those just from London. Along with the names you already mentioned, the only other one who's in the charts right now that comes to mind is Jay1, who's from Coventry.
That's incredible about 'I Don't Care' breaking the record for biggest global first day Spotify streams, but what's even more impressive is that Ed now has four out of five of the biggest Spotify daily figures in the UK (with 'Despacito' in fifth). I'm surprised that the JB singles as a lead artist haven't managed higher numbers, with both 'Sorry' & 'Love Yourself' just about scraping 600k in their strongest days. That said, that comes with the caveat that this was back in late 2015, where Spotify wasn't as big as it was today.
'Falling Like The Stars' isn't doing that well on streaming, but it has enough consistency on sales that it'll probably end up debuting regardless. 'Bullet From A Gun' seems locked for a Top 40 position at this point. Regarding 'Tough Love', I feel like they released it a bit early with 'SOS' currently in its prime, but I could still see climbing into the Top 40 next week after its debut like its predecessor did.

That's an awesome idea! I've got an exam to study for on Tuesday, but I'll have a bit more free time after that, so I'll definitely be doing that afterwards! I'll also post my updated Eurovision 2019 re-ordering by then as well. ;)

Yeah, along with the fact that he's had two UK & Ireland tours sell out in seconds, I'd definitely call him a major British act at this point. Not a household name just yet, but he might get there if he can maintain this level of success for much longer.
I think it's almost certain Ed & JB will be debuting at #1 on Friday too!
Regarding James Arthur, I see his new single debuting in the Top 20 & maybe going on to peak inside the Top 10 if there's a lack of competition.

Well, 'I Don't Care' lost over 320k streams on Spotify on its 2nd day, putting it at 858k, still a lot, but given that we've still got the extremely popular 'Vossi Bop' doing well it's less than 200k ahead of the #2, and it's less than 100k ahead of the combined versions of 'Old Town Road'. I think it'll probably stabilise at around 800k daily streams. I'm still certain it'll debut at #1 with the highest debut of 2019, probably around 30k actual sales and 110k streaming sales, but it might not be able to break any records in the UK.
I'd say that the #2 will be a very close race next week, but I think 'Old Town Road' might be able to take it. Throughout the entirety of last week, the combined versions of 'Old Town Road' were streamed 42,437 more times on Spotify than 'Vossi Bop', but just yesterday 'Old Town Road' had the lead by 77,350 streams. 'Old Town Road (Remix)' is also #2 on iTunes now, with around 35% of the sales of 'I Don't Care'.
'I Don't Care' didn't just break the biggest global first day streams on Spotify, it actually got the highest daily streams total ever! Yeah, it's pretty insane that Ed's got the entire Top 4 highest daily stream total in the UK on Spotify as well. I think Bieber's singles would've done much better if Spotify was as popular then as it is now, since 600k streams back then was still insanse, and the first to pass 1m were Ed's double release on 6th January, 2017, and they were a solid 400k ahead of the previous record holder, 'One Dance', and they haven't been beaten by a non-Christmas song since.

Yeah, I mostly agree with your predictions so far. It appears that 'Old Town Road [Remix]' got a big sales boost over the weekend for some reason, enough to put it at #2 on iTunes currently as you said (is that the highest it's charted there so far?).
Regarding 'I Don't Care', I'm curious to see where it'll fit regarding a later project; is it the lead single to Ed's collaborations album, or just a one-off song, or part of a series/movie soundtrack. I don't think it's a JB lead single since both got a lead credit.

Yeah, I'm interested as to where 'I Don't Care' fits as well. If Ed's next full album is meant to be more acoustic then 'I Don't Care' doesn't really fit, especially since the album probably won't be until 2020. It also doesn't really fit on the supposed collaborations EP since that's meant to be grime-influenced like 'No. 5 Collaborations Project', unless it's changed direction. At the moment I think it could just be a standalone single and nothing more.

Yeah, 'I Don't Care' doesn't really fit into either acoustic nor grime. That said, regarding 'No.5 Collaborations Project', I wonder if that's going to allow grime acts to get a following outside of the UK, since Ed is definitely a globally recognised artist at this point.

I think the potential upcoming EP could definitely help some grime artists to get a following outside of the UK with how huge Ed is now everywhere in the world, but I don't think 'No. 5 Collaborations Project' made much of an impact since all of the artists on it like Devlin, Wiley, Jme, Ghetts and Wretch 32 are all still pretty much limited to the UK. Though that was to be expected given that it released on the 7th January, 2011, before Ed had even blown up in the UK, let alone worldwide.

Oops... I somehow thought that 'No.5 Collaborations Project' was the name of his upcoming grime-influenced album, not the one he put out in 2011, haha!
The question is, will Ed be able to hold all three of the Top 3 again? I'd say he's definitely getting at least all three in the Top 5 whenever his next album or EP drops.

I thought you might've, but I wasn't entirely sure so I just responded in a way that would work both ways haha!
But yeah, I think Ed could manage to get the Top 3 again, quite possibly with both the EP and his next album! I also think he could manage to get 3 in the Top 5 again on the albums chart (iirc his best was #1, #4 and #5 on the week of '÷'s release), though if he does it it'll probably be when his next full album releases rather than the EP. Obviously the next album would be #1. and I can see '÷' and 'x' both returning to the Top 5, while '+' would probably be lower in the Top 10, along with the supposed EP if that does end up being released this year.

Haha, well that shows how much attention I paid to Ed's earlier EPs! :P
It was actually later that year where I started becoming a fan, since '+' came out in September I believe. Actually, looking back at Ed's discography, I'm really surprised as to how many EPs he has, with his debut one being released ages ago in 2005 (although they were all self-released until 'No.5 Collaborations Project' apparently, then he joined Atlantic shortly afterwards).
