My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
- ‘Someone You Loved’ by Lewis Capaldi is #1 on the singles chart for a third consecutive week!
- Lewis Capaldi leads over ‘Giant’ by Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man by 5,600 combined sales. ‘Giant’ therefore remains at #2 for a third week in a row, but does now lead on downloads.
- ‘Shallow’ by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper remains at #1 on the national YouTube chart, with a 5% increase in weekly views from last week to 2.62 million.
- ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ by Sam Smith & Normani has been the most played song on British radio for a seventh consecutive week! Looking at the charts for each region, it looks like it had a strong airplay lead this week too.
- DAVE FT J HUS – DISASTER (#8)
I’m actually fairly surprised about this collaboration, because while both have collaborated before, J Hus is currently serving an eight month prison sentence for carrying a 10cm blade. That said, these two have always have strong chemistry together & compliment each other’s vibe well! Both artists also sound fully engaged here & there’s a bounce to the melody that makes this more addictive with every listen! The lyrics combine putting down haters & flexing, but the best part about them, continuing to believe in yourself despite the troubles you face in your career. I did actually expect to do a little better than it did, but I’ve got no problem seeing in the Top 10, it’s another deserving smash for both of them. Solid 7/10!
- DAVE – STREATHAM (#9)
I feel like so many rappers have a song dedicated to their hometown or their origins, but Dave a good job with this one! I’m impressed with the details he goes into about the South London area, covering all the good, bad & mixed experiences he’s witnessed there. His rapping definitely has one of the best rhythms yet & his passion for grime is almost effortless at this point, but I just wish he added more interesting & memorable production here, because that gets a little boring after a while. Dave himself is the main attraction of this track though, so for that, I’m giving this a light 7/10.
- DAVE FT BURNA BOY – LOCATION (#11)
So this the last of three Dave tracks to review & it’s unfortunately probably the one I care about the least. I do like the dreamy intro & hook, as well as the smooth piano at the back of the mix, but Burna Boy doesn’t sound as connected to the song as he should be & the content he’s bringing is rather vague, which is a problem if you’re working alongside someone like Dave. Thankfully, Dave does bring a more witty & lyrical delivery on his rise to fame, even if his rhymes become too repetitive faster than you know it. I get why this has become big on streaming, especially Apple Music, but I’m only just lukewarm on it for now. Solid 6/10.
- BILLIE EILISH – WISH YOU WERE GAY (#26)
Not long to wait now until Billie Eilish’s debut album is released (just two weeks away) & while I’m looking forward to that, I have a feeling that is going to be one of the singles I like the least from it. Billie Eilish wishing a guy she liked back when she was 14 was gay because he didn’t have any interest for her at the time could be seen among many as controversial, even if the guy in question actually did come out as gay eventually. Now, she actually admits she’s selfish for feeling this way on the bridge, which does lower the level of controversy slightly in the lyrics, Outside of that though, the song is only just okay. I’m not really on board with the use of the scattered beat nor the piano line as much as I usually am & while I don’t mind her delivery nor the subtlety in her writing, I appreciated it more in other hits of hers. So yeah, not bad, but this is definitely the weakest song I’ve heard from her so far. Light 6/10.
- WILEY, STEFFLON DON & SEAN PAUL FT IDRIS ELBA – BOASTY (#33)
The three lead artists collaborating here really doesn’t surprise me at all, but of course the big name that’ll stand out here is… Idris Elba! I mean, we’ve had actors chart recently that can bring some quality (look at Bradley Cooper!), so is this any good? You know, yeah, I certainly get the appeal behind this! It’s finally a brag rap in grime music that sticks the landing for me! I particularly like how much chemistry each of the performers have with each other & how they own contribute to their own energy to the song; Wiley brings his deep signature flow (which always sounds groovy), Stefflon Don shows some spice in her delivery, Sean Paul injects his Caribbean touches & surprisingly, Idris Elba has an interesting amount of swagger! I think some of the content in the verses might have a few cheesy metaphors in them, but the track is so much fun & suited for clubs that they act as way more of a punchline they I expected them to! The airhorns & heavy bass show that is definitely showing potential to be a hit in the spring months & I’ve got to say, this is probably the best surprise out of all the new arrivals we got this week! Strong 7/10 for now, but I think this could grow on me even more.
- JUICE WRLD – ROBBERY (#39)
So I didn’t have a ton of expectations for Juice WRLD’s sophomore album, given the bad things I’ve heard about it & the fact I’ve never been able to get on board with his music anyway. It turns out that there were only about half a dozen out of the 22 on the album that I cared for… & this is certainly not one of them! Firstly, his vocals immediately strike as a warning sign, which is even worst than the frontmen of most emo bands from last decade & at least they sing passion anyway & you can somewhat understand what they’re saying. I mean, his delivery is so warbled & his range isn’t even that good anyway. The delicate pianos might’ve been okay in the instrumentation, but not paired with the generic trap beat, it just sounds so out of place! It also annoys me how contradictory the lyrics are, because Juice WRLD’s dad tells him not to let this woman know that he’s insecure because she robbed him of his heart, yet he feels the need to flex on this woman when she’s insecure. I had too much to say about that song, but I think that highlights how bad it is & it might not be the worst song I’ve heard this past decade, but it’s certainly a low point in the Top 40 that I don’t see anyone beating in a long time. I’m finally going there, 1/10!
- On the albums chart, Dave’s debut album called ‘Psychodrama’ enters straight in at #1, despite only being #5 in Monday’s update. It accumulated 26,390 combined sales this week (consisting of 23.6 million streams, making up 79% of its total units).
- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Pt. 1’ (debuts at #2, only 279 combined sales behind Dave), ‘Still On My Mind’ by Dido (debuts at #3), ‘Sucker Punch’ by Sigrid (debuts at #4) & ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ by Tom Walker (1-5).
- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘What More Can I Do?’ by Jack Savoretti, ‘Here With Me’ by Marshmello & CHVRCHES, ‘Pretty Shining People’ by George Ezra, ‘Told You So’ by HRVY, ‘Baby’ by Giggs, ‘Girls Need Love [Remix]’ by Summer Walker & Drake, ‘Play God’ by Sam Fender, 'My Bad' by Khalid, 'Two Of Us' by Louis Tomlinson, one or two more Dave tracks & maybe even more.
- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Wow so Idris Elba actually raps in the song?! When I saw his name on the song I thought it would be like a spoken part or something.
I'm glad we hate "Robbery" so much! My 2/10 is starting to feel generous.

I'd say im quite a big fan of Juice WRLD's music, but i have to say his
new album was really bad, i'd personally give Robbery a 5/10, as
his voice can really annoying on the song. definitely a step down from
goodbye and good riddance... (really happy for Dave though)
David N'jama
Guess, I'm the odd one out. I actually like the song but his voice was really annoying
AkazaK
You clearly aren't a producer. Streatham's instrumental evolves over it's run time, also stop calling all UK hip-hop grime. Grime is a whole different genre
Rob Parkinson
After listening to boasty a few times upon first release I didnt take to it much but left it in my play list and a few fast forwards but week by week it has grown on me considerably and I really rate the track now. Its lively, it's fun and it stands out on it's own like no other tracks out there, a true original that I think many have been trying to do lately to no avail but I think Wiley, stefflon, Sean and Idris have smashed this. Also not sure what has given it such a big boost this week?
Foxes
Hey Piran! I love that 'Someone You Loved' stays at #1, but of course the best part about the chart this week for me is that Dave has done so well! I was surprised when he was only #5 in the update, but it seems like his superior streaming combined with the other #1 contenders being more sales driven, and therefore more front-loaded, let him surge to #1 by the end of the week. He absolutely deserves it with how much work he's been putting in and how incredible the album is!
I did hope that he would manage 3 Top 10 hits, but 3 in the Top 11 isn't a bad result either, especially given that 'Location' could definitely reach the Top 10 next week with it being #1 on Apple Music and #10 on Spotify currently. I did think that 'Disaster' would debut higher as well, especially since it was #4 in http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/foals-dave-and-dido-locked-in-three-way-chart-battle/075610, but #8 is still pretty good. Looking at current streaming it's unlikely that Dave will see any new debuts next week, but his 3 current tracks could all make the Top 10 and will almost definitely all be in the Top 20 still.
As for the new debuts, the 3 Dave tracks are unsurprisingly my favourite tracks of the week, with 'Disaster' at a solid 8/10, 'Streatham' at a light-solid 9/10 and 'Location' at a light 9/10 for me. 'wish you were gay' would only get a 5/10 for me, while 'Boasty' would be a solid 6/10 for now. Then there's 'Robbery'... it's very, very rare that I will think something along the lines of "This song is absolutely awful" when I first hear it, but that's what went through my head when this played on the chart show. It's extremely close to a 0/10 for me, but for now I'll give it a very light 1/10.
I know it's not in the chart (though it would've been if all of Dave's entries were allowed to chart), but I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on 'Lesley'. I'd love to hear your thoughts on 'PSYCHODRAMA' as a whole, but 'Lesley' in particular is the one that stood out above all the others for me, so I'd love to hear what you think about it.
One thing that stood out to me about 'PSYCHODRAMA' going to #1 isn't actually to do with the album, but it's to do with 'Gang Signs & Prayer' instead. Dave now has the highest streaming total for a UK rap album, but in terms of combined sales it was around 42,000 behind. I didn't actually realise how well 'Gang Signs & Prayer' did on sales, since it must've gotten around 50,000 actual sales, compared to Dave's roughly 6,000 sales.
Looking ahead to next week, there's nothing that immediately screams "this will be in the Top 40 next week", so for now all I really hope is that Dave can hold onto the #1 album. Jack Savoretti's new album seems to be doing quite well on sales, but I'm hoping that Dave's massive lead on streams will keep him at #1.
D
Damián
Hey Piran! Is that Sigrid in.your profile pic??😊
Piran
Hey Damian! :)
That's right, I absolutely loved her debut album!
Piran
Hey Gameskiller! :)
I'm guess I'm happier about 'Someone You Loved' staying at #1 on the singles chart than I am about 'Psychodrama' debuting at #1 on the albums chart, but both are positives for me.
I did actually think the streams from both Spotify & especially Apple would be enough to carry all three of Dave's tracks into the Top 10 this week, but he probably has a good chance to do that next week anyway! I think that he'll definitely be #1 on the albums chart for a second week if he can!
Yeah, next week's chart should be relatively boring I reckon, but 'Baby' & 'So Am I' probably have the best chances at entering the Top 40 at this point, unless a video makes a big debut out of nowhere on the YouTube chart.
The problem is, it's hard to predict sales estimates for songs at the moment, since it appears Kworb hasn't updated in the past four days.
I'm not too surprised about the 'Psychodrama' beating 'Gangs, Signs & Prayer' point to be totally honest. From what I've seen from both of them so far, the latter does better on sales, while the former does better on streaming, as you mentioned. I think along with the fact that the OCC reported 95% of combined single "sales" come from streaming & a lot of UK hip-hop albums get a lot of debuts on the singles chart too, I can definitely see why Dave caught up so much throughout the week.
It seems like we generally agree on most of the debuts this week, with you liking the Dave tracks a bit more than me as expected, while I also could've seen you not enjoying 'Wish You Were Gay' as much as me, since you've already told me you're not a massive fan of Billie Eilish.
I'm pleased we both strongly dislike 'Robbery' though. I very rarely get mad when it comes to the charts, but I think I will be if this becomes any more of a hit!
I'll get back on you on 'Lesley' whenever I get time to hear it. I know it's about an abusive relationship & the track is something like 11 minutes long, right?
Piran
I'm glad we both have the same opinion on 'Boasty'! :D
I think it must've been the big jump in downloads, because it didn't debut very high on streaming outside of Apple Music at all this week.
Piran
Uh... I never said I am a producer. 'Streatham' does see some subtle changes in production at around the two minute mark, but that still doesn't make it all that memorable. The beat & rhythm were better on his other hits like: 'Funky Friday', '18HUNNA' & 'All I Ever Wanted' in my opinion.
Regarding your other point, Dave's album doesn't necessarily fit into that genre, true, but Wiley definitely does! He's one of the founding artists of grime music.
Piran
See, I'd say that 'Death Race For Love' is on the same level as 'Goodbye & Good Riddance' for me.
While I never cared about the latter for having very few tracks that I wanted to come back to (it didn't leave much of an impression for me at all), the former has more intriguing tracks, but a lot more embarrassing moments such as on 'Robbery' too.
His sophomore album reminds me of Post Malone at points, although I'd certainly take him over Juice WRLD.
Piran
He does indeed! I was surprised that he raps in it too. ;)
Yeah, 'Robbery' was a 3/10 for me at first, but I started to find it more grating with every listen. Disappointed to see this gain traction, when the rest of the album is actually okay at points.
Henri Laitila
Oh about Juice in Finnish charts:
"Robbery" ended up not getting much momentum, being in the low 40s in our Spotify chart, so it didn't debut on the singles chart.
But the album managed a strong debut at #7, being the second-highest debut, behind Finnish rock band Children of Bodom's new number-one album. I also see it maintaining that success, seeing as "Goodbye & Good Riddance" is still at #31, after 42 weeks.
Piran
After looking back through the Finnish chart archives, I noticed that 'Goodbye & Good Riddance' also peaked at #7 in the albums chart, while 'Lucid Dreams' hit a high of #7 in the singles chart. Without a major hit like that on 'Death Race For Love', I'm not sure if his sophomore album will stick around like his debut did.
Foxes
It looks like 'Someone You Loved' will be spending next week at #1 as well, and probably a few weeks after that as well, which I am definitely happy about. I hope that 'PSYCHODRAMA' can stay #1 next week, but with the vast majority of its sales coming from streams I'm not sure if it can hold up against albums that do better on traditional sales.
'So Am I' is only #92 on Spotify and #74 on Apple Music currently, and while it is climbing on both, and those positions are certainly much better than last Friday where it wasn't in the Top 200 on either, I'm not sure if they'll be enough to bring it into the Top 40. I am really surprised with how little it's been doing on all services, given how massive 'Sweet but Psycho' was just a couple of months ago.
I didn't even notice Kworb's iTunes charts hasn't been updated. I wonder why, since all of their other charts have been, but all of their iTunes charts seem to be frozen.
Yeah, 'Lesley' is about an abusive relationship, and it's 11:08 long. With it being that long, it's also the longest song to ever reach my charts, beating the 10:42 of 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You (captured in The Live Room)'. The track really showcases Dave's talent as an artist, as his storytelling is absolutely incredible on it. I would love to see a music video of the track, but I feel like it'd be way too much effort for them to make a good one, especially since the song will almost definitely never be a single given its length.
D
Damián
Hey, hey! Good on you mate! I love her music too, even though I couldn't listen to the full album yet! Pure Classic Pop
Piran
I'm really pleased that you love her music as well! Hopefully you'll be able to heat the album in full soon. :)
Rob Parkinson
If that was the case then the prodigy's firestarter would at least be in top 100, downloads hardly effect the overall chart, would have to be no.1 in downloads by a huge margin like when they release a charity single to have an effect. I was thinking more along the lines of a video release, appearing on an advert or appearing on a big show somewhere? Perhaps it has gotten more airplay on radio of late or maybe Idris is pushing it on his social media channels lol
Piran
I think it's because Apple are doing some updates, so Kworb haven't got their sales estimates from them since then! You might remember me telling you that I follow the US charts as well as our ones; they recently took down the radio updates for the Billboard charts, but I think they're back up now.
I'd need to go back through my archives to find out what my longest #1 in terms of run time is.
Speaking of #1s, do you think 'Someone You Loved' will be on ACR soon? This'll be its 12th week on the chart & seem to have declined in sales again to allow 'Giant' to extend its lead there. It appears to have peaked on streaming too, although the one place where 'Someone You Loved' did gain this week was YouTube (6-2, +3.7%).
