How ironic that the best song in the chart by far - the Wolf Alice one - is at the bottom
I.B.
I wonder if Rita Ora or Lady Gaga will nab the top spot next week.
Piran
My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
- ‘Promises’ by Calvin Harris & Sam Smith is #1 on the singles chart for a fourth week in a row, with a lead of around 6,500 combined sales. It was streamed 6.6 million times over the last seven days.
- ‘Promises’ additionally keeps at #1 on the airplay chart for a fifth straight week!
- ‘I Love It’ by Kanye West & Lil Pump was the most viewed official video across the country over the past week, as it leads the nation’s YouTube chart for a second consecutive week with 3.72 million views (down 18.5% from the week before). It’s also #1 on streaming overall, with 7.32 million plays this past week.
- LIL PEEP & XXXTENTACION – FALLING DOWN (#10)
As some of might know, both of these artists died at a fairly young age earlier this year. As for this song, I’m really unsure what to think of it is a whole. Lyrically, the song is about being down when a lover is not nearby & the production could almost be seen as an alternative-rock, which was actually a very nice surprise! Lil Peep brings his usual emo vibe to this, but I’m sorry, XXXTENTACION just sounds dull & mediocre. That said, the fact that this collaboration came together is just disturbing, not only that record producers are milking both these artists of the money that them or at least their families could’ve had, but also, Lil Peep has said many negative things about XXXTENTACION’s offenses, so they probably wouldn’t have collaborated anyway. As for the record itself, it’s not bad, but it won’t have a high replay factor for me… 5/10.
- EMINEM – KILLSHOT (#13)
I’m really not sure how I feel about this one. Yeah, it stands out more than everything on ‘Kamikaze’ & it seems like both his delivery & some of the punchlines he delivered make most of the internet say Eminem won the beef between him & MGK. ‘Killshot’ is more of a rant than a song in terms of its structure & while ‘Rap Devil’ sounds like it should be the bigger hit, Eminem’s aggression here was a solid response to Machine Gun Kelly! I laughed at a few of the fun jabs at Diddy too & I don’t really care much for the production, which is annoying since rap disses from last decade actually had instrumentation that made an impact too! Overall, I’ll go against the majority when I prefer ‘Rap Devil’ to ‘Killshot’ as a song, but as a diss, the latter is better. That being said, my rating for this song is a solid 6/10.
- RITA ORA – LET YOU LOVE ME (#14)
So I’m happy that we should finally be getting a sophomore album from Rita Ora in a couple of months from now, since six years seems like an incredibly long time for a follow-up given how many hits she’s had in that time! This, however, sounds like a song that should be pushed as a single later on in the album cycle instead of the lead single. I think Rita highlights the insecurities of being a relationship well in this & she’s easily one of the best female pop singers Britain has had to offer this decade, but the production in this doesn’t build on what we’re used to from her in most of her other charting songs. It’s decent for sure, but I’m not sure I see this growing on me. On that note, strong 6/10.
- FRENCH MONTANA FT DRAKE – NO STYLIST (#21)
I’ve only heard this song once & I have no desire to hear it again, mostly because there’s not a lot I can say about it! This is just a repeat of what you’ve heard from both of these artists countless times before, including bragging bars & materialistic raps. There are a couple of subtle threats here too, as well as the odd shots at Kanye which I didn’t find funny at all. French Montana tries to do a Rae Sremmurd impression on the falsetto & somehow fails at that too! I will say that Drake’s brings a better rhythm in his flow, but he still sounds monotonous & as if he doesn’t care about the song, but with everything I’ve said about this, I wouldn’t blame him. 3/10.
- KHALID – BETTER (#31)
Khalid is undeniably among some of the most successful new artists of 2018, both commercially & critically, especially in R&B! Honestly, I think his songs as a lead artist get better with every release, if only slightly. His voice might be autotuned more than usual here, but as least his vocals are: smooth, relaxing & soulful! The desaturated pianos & the misty instrumentation pair together well with his voice here, although I will admit that the outro falls flat for me & the content is a little underwhelming in comparison to what we’ve heard from him before. This song still does have some issues, but Khalid as an artist is definitely growing on me. On that note, this is a solid 6/10.
- MUMFORD & SONS – GUIDING LIGHT (#40)
I’ve always liked the folk-rock blend that this band have bene going for & thanks to huge support from Annie Mac on Radio 1, thankfully it means they got another Official Chart appearance! The guitar melody is addictive in the verse, then builds up intensity & explodes towards the end & I definitely love the suspense & excitement in the instrumentation here; that’ll keep me tuned into any song! Not only that, but the vocals have such an emotional weight to them, with lyrics about being there for somebody despite all hope seeming lost. My only criticism with this is that the chorus isn’t too memorable, which might stop this from being an incredible song, but it’s still very good nonetheless! As a rating, light 8/10 from me.
- On the albums chart, ‘Kamikaze’ by Eminem is at the top of the chart for a fourth consecutive week!
- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack (3-2), ‘Chris’ by Christine & The Queens (debuts at #3), ‘Living The Dream’ by Slash with Myles Kennedy (debuts at #4) & ‘The Blue Hour’ by Suede (debuts at #5).
- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Shallow’ by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper, ‘Moves’ by Olly Murs ft Snoop Dogg, ‘I Want You To Freak’ by Rak-Su, ‘What You Waiting For’ by Sigala ft Kylie Minogue, ‘Taki Taki’ by DJ Snake ft Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B, ‘Back & Forth’ by Mk x Jonas Blue x Becky Hill, a couple of Lil Wayne tracks & maybe even more.
- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! I love that 'Promises' is #1 for another week, and that 'Eastside' stays at #2. Sadly 'Eastside' did drop in sales this week, so it'll be on ACR next week, but it had a fantastic run. 'Promises' should be at #1 next week as well, and if it can manage 6 weeks at #1 in total then Calvin will tie Drake for the most weeks at #1 this year, as Drake has 14 and Calvin has 12 so far. I am really surprised that 'I Love It' has lasted this long, though. I feel like the main attraction of the song is it's video, but people are listening to it a lot on other streaming services as well, not just YouTube. On the topic of YouTube, I think you were looking at the Top Music Videos rather than the Top Songs, since 'Killshot' is actually #1 as expected, with 7.4m views, while 'I Love It' got 3.86m in total. https://charts.youtube.com/charts/TopSongs/gb/20180914-20180920?hl=en-GB
I agree with a lot of your thoughts on most of the new entries this week. I like most of them a bit more than you, though, as I'd give 'Falling Down' a strong 7/10, 'Killshot' a strong 8/10, 'Let You Love Me' a weak 7/10 and 'No Stylist' a solid 4/10. We differ the most on 'Better' and 'Guiding Light', since I'd give the former a weak 10/10 and the latter a weak 5/10.
I really love that 'Kamikaze' is #1 for a 4th week as well, since it's now had the longest run at #1 for an artist album since '÷'s 20 weeks in the position! I think it may lose the position next week to 'Tha Carter V', but I think it'll be close. The album's doing nowhere near as well in the UK (where it holds 3 positions in the Top 40 at #19, #20 and #28 on Spotify) as it is in the US (where it holds the entire Top 16 and all 23 tracks are inside the Top 30 on Spotify), so it will probably be close. 'Kamikaze' definitely has the potential to be Eminem's most successful album in the UK ever, though, at least in terms of weeks at #1!
I would love if Logic's 'YSIV' could make the Top 5 next week as well, but it seems like the album's being really underappreciated. In the UK it's only got 3 songs in the Top 200 on Spotify, with the highest at #142, and even in the US where all 14 tracks are inside the Top 104, the highest position is #44. It's definitely doing much worse than his last 2 albums: 'Everybody' and 'Bobby Tarantino II', which is disappointing since I think it's a really solid album.
Piran
Hey Gameskiller! How are you this week? :)
Yeah, unfortunately that means 'I Love It' could move up to #2 because of that! I knew it was doing well on other streaming services (particularly Spotify) as well as YouTube though, but it probably wouldn't be as high as it was before official videos counted towards the chart. 'Promises' seems safe for a fifth week at #1 though.
Regarding the YouTube charts, 'I Love It' was still the most watched official video. 'Killshot' did get way more views as you mentioned, but that's only an audio.
It looks like the new Lil Wayne is going to have nowhere near the impact it's having elsewhere & he might only get one or at most two songs inside the Top 40 next week, unless he's doing better on other streaming sites compared to Spotify. He might get a Top 5 debut on the albums chart, with Cher probably doing the same, but I think 'Kamikaze' will likely end up at #1 again.
Regarding 'Kamikaze', if it does get next week at the top, it'll tie 'The Eminem Show' & 'Curtain Call: The Hits' as his longest consecutive lead on the albums chart (both five consecutive weeks). 'Recovery' is his longest #1 on the albums chart in total with seven weeks. Jess Glynne has a new album out in a couple of weeks that should be at the top, but there's definitely the possibility that 'Kamikaze' goes back to #1 afterwards.
Foxes
Do official audios not count towards the chart, then? I think they do, which means that 'KIllshot's 7.4m views counted, but I'm not 100% sure. It would make sense if they did, since it would've debuted at #21 last week if it could, and it doesn't seem like that would be possible without the 7.4m YouTube views since it only appeared on other platforms on the Wednesday. It also seems like the 2.29m views it got this week to be #3 on YouTube would combine perfectly with the #17 audio streams placement and #11 sales placement that it got this week for a #13 debut.
'Tha Carter V' is doing much better on Apple Music, with 2 songs in the Top 10 and 8 in the Top 40, but if Spotify's anything to go off of, they'll drop fast. It's only got 'Mona Lisa' at #23 and 'Don't Cry' at #32 in the Top 40 now on Spotify. It still has a shot at #1, but I think that 'Kamikaze' will probably end up at the top. 'Yandhi' could've had a shot at #1 as well, but it's still not been released, even though it was meant to release yesterday.
It would be really interesting if 'Kamikaze' managed to get the most weeks at #1 of all of Eminem's albums, since I'm pretty sure it had one of his lowest debuts ever. Most Eminem albums debuted with over 100k sales, while 'Kamikaze' only had 55k. I think that it will probably get 5 or 6 weeks consecutively, and then 7 or 8 weeks in total.
