Anyone know why New Order's Blue Monday has re-entered the UK Dance Chart this week?
I am definitely not complaining but I am not sure if it suddenly got airplay from somewhere?
James England
The song is used in a new BT broadband advert: BT Plus. Guess the advert has got people interested in streaming the song.
Quote:
Dan Ramsay, consumer marketing director at BT, said the New Order track had been chosen because it was "upbeat, catchy, and it sounds contemporary (even though it’s not)"

One kiss should still be number one, only isn't cos of streaming penalty this week, shouldn't penalise the number one. Everything will be knocked off eventually, don't need to force it yet shouldn't there be similar streaming penalty on album charts instead of showman been top for a lot longer than one kiss as been top of singles. And ed sheeran still top 5 plus loads of other ancient albums clogging up top 100 including many best of albums. New music drops out faster than ever and being kept from top spot.

The penalties shouldn't apply to either. The chart is a chart of what sells the best and shouldn't be penalised just for being more popular than others for longer. I think what makes the album chart more interesting is the fact that a lot of older albums still have the stamina to remain on the chart while newer stuff drops out quicker … says a lot for the newer stuff, except Ed Sheeran, Foos, Adele etc etc. I guess only time will tell what newer stuff remains for longer on a par with the likes of Bob Marley and Fleetwood Mac.

Finally, a good week on the charts! Happy to see Jess Glynne get the top spot, now Clean Bandit & Demi Lovato should be #1 next!

Another 6 months and all the Christmas songs will be back in the charts. I hope Wham: Last Christmas finally gets to number 1 this year

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
- ‘I’ll Be There’ becomes the new #1 on the singles chart & Jess Glynne’s seventh visit to the top spot, extending her record among British female solo artists! It leads by just 898 copies over ‘Solo’ by Clean Bandit ft Demi Lovato.
- Jess Glynne ties Kylie Minogue for third most #1s among all females, with only Madonna (13) & Rihanna (9) claiming more.
- Jess Glynne now also shares another record, with Calvin Harris & Tinie Tempah, for the most #1 singles achieved by an artist this decade.
- ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ by Ariana Grande becomes the new #1 on this week’s airplay chart.
- ‘Rise’ by Jonas Blue ft Jack & Jack lives up to its name, as it jumps 47-31 on its third week in the Official Chart! Jonas Blue has always interested me as a DJ/producer, as he doesn’t really fall into either EDM or tropical as subgenres of dance, but blends into both. As for ‘Rise’, where he teams up with Jack & Jack (a duo from California who gained popularity on Vine), the first positive that stands out are the uplifting lyrics about defying expectations & clever use of repetition, alongside Jonas Blue’s usual vibrant production. However, while most of the instrumental features here are enjoyable, such as the fluty synth & finger snaps, I’m not sure I can get behind the heavy, wild drop after Jack & Jack stop singing over the piano accompaniment & like ‘Mama’, the structure of the song could have allowed this to have one more verse or a bridge would be even better, but this as it is has strong potential to be a crossover club hit as well as a massive radio smash, so yeah, I hope everyone else gets on board with this, because I’m impressed!
- Last year’s BRITS Critics’ Choice Award winner, Jorja Smith, makes her third Top 40 appearance, with ‘Blue Lights’ debuting at #38 this week. I’ve always seen Jorja Smith as a very promising new singer & her vocals suit a laid-back R&B sound well, but she can even get away with the production not sounding all that memorable. That’s why this song can be placed in a similar category to ‘Here’ by Alessia Cara, although the content looks more at lamenting the culture of poor schools, endless boredom & oppressive police, but it’s the second half of the song where that content gets all the more cutting & emotional. There’s even a sample of a Dizzee Rascal song in there & when you also notice the subtle crooning that gave me Amy Winehouse flashbacks, you really do begin to realise that Jorja Smith didn’t win that huge award last year for nothing & it looks like she’s sticking around which is amazing!
- The final new arrival of the week is from a 19-year-old Chicago-based rapper called Juice WRLD, who soars 53-39 with his debut charting song, ‘Lucid Dreams’. It turns out that this song is climbing the charts fast thanks to mostly streaming, especially from Soundcloud & Spotify, so I expect it to ascend a lot further yet. However, given the mediocrity of the song, I’m not seeing that as a good thing… another week, another one-dimensional trap song that probably nobody will remember within the next few months. Juice WRLD reminds me a lot of Lil Uzi Vert with how monotonous he sounds & the fact that he relies so much on auto-tune. The song-writing is very strange too, including lines like, "I cannot change you, so I must replace you". Thankfully, I’m not sure it’ll get much in the way of sales nor radio, so I can only hope it’s gone soon.
- There’s no change atop the albums chart, as ‘The Greatest Showman’ is #1 there for a 19th non-consecutive week. In doing so, it becomes the longest #1 soundtrack in nearly 50 years!
- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (3-2), ‘Lost & Found’ by Jorja Smith (debuts at #3), The Beach Boys with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (debuts at #4) & ‘÷’ by Ed Sheeran (7-5).
- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could be entering the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Bed’ by Nicki Minaj ft Ariana Grande, ‘Just My Type’ by The Vamps, ‘Born To Be Yours’ by Kygo & Imagine Dragons, ‘Ocean’ by Martin Garrix ft Khalid, ‘Nevermind’ by Dennis Lloyd, 'Dance To This' by Troye Sivan ft Ariana Grande & maybe even more.
- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hello Piran !!! I wouldn't ignore such great artists as Rudimental, Sigma and Sigala who are also supposed to have brand new singles this week titled accordingly "Let Me Live", "Anywhere", and "Feels Like Home". pS. Have a great weekend too !!!
Piran
Hey Ireneusz! :)
I'll definitely keep my eye on those, but I haven't seen any significant sales or streaming traction for any of them that could get them in the Top 40 by Friday yet.
I hope you have a good weekend as well!
