Official Singles Chart Top 40 on 23/3/2018

Freaky Friday enters at #16, and back then it was jokes and giggles. I loved it so much, my 3rd favourite song of 2018 after When The Party’s Over and Lucid Dreams! :D

Also, I think Moonlight was the final new entry for X when he was alive.

Everyone who still records with abuser Chris Brown should burn in .

The singles chart is messed up. SCR, ACR ... how can the OCC have one rule for one and one for others however long something has been in the charts. Isn't that unfair? Surely if a song is being streamed/sold more than others however long it has been around surely it should be higher. We could end up with a No.1 having less sales/streams than a No.2, how stupid. I'm all for seeing God's Plan fall from the top but for that to happen due to 'OCC's Plan' is ridiculous.
That would also mean the end for any competition to break Bryan Adams' record for 16 consecutive weeks at No.1 as most singles have declining sales well before that point.

Would be nice to see These Days get to No.1 briefly however being No.2 for 7 weeks is a joint record in itself and won't be forgotten.

Drake at no 1?
That should be 101........................

Sorry for not posting a full review last week, but here are my thoughts & observations on the new chart…

- ‘God’s Plan’ by Drake is #1 on the singles chart for a ninth consecutive week, becoming only the 21st song ever to reach at least nine or more weeks at the chart summit.

- ‘These Days’ by Rudimental, Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen finishes at #2 for a seventh week in a row, just 3,200 combined sales behind ‘God’s Plan’. It equals an Official Charts record for the most weeks spend in this position, tying ‘I Swear’ by All-4-One in 1994 & ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 ft Christina Aguilera in 2011.

- ‘Feel It Still’ rebounds 2-1 on the airplay chart, where it’s #1 on the radio for a second non-consecutive week.

- There wasn’t a lot of excitement in the singles chart this week, as we only have two new arrivals into the Top 40. The highest of them comes from comedian & rapper Lil Dicky, as ‘Freaky Friday’, which features Chris Brown, debuts at #16. It’s always interesting to see comedy or joke hits debut big on the charts, especially when it comes from an artist who has only got minor success in the US & Canada so far, but this is looking set to be a world hit! What I consider just as much as if it’ll make me laugh is that whether most people can understand the sense of humour. In this case, while I personally really like this because of some of the punchlines & just how ridiculous the story of the song is, I can see a few fanbases or racial groups being disappointed or even offended by this & being intentionally offensive is never a good look. Regardless, seeing someone poke fun at themselves for three minutes straight was definitely entertaining! He also commiserates on his own un-coolness & talks about how his idol in the song, that being Chris Brown, can be “so good at dancing” & has the “sickest tattoos”, but I think what upset many people was that Lil Dicky chose to collaborate with somebody who has assaulted women a few times before. Although, the funniest part of the song for me came at the end, where: Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled & Kendall Jenner all make appearances & make fun of themselves, even though Kendall’s part was far too autotuned at the end. Overall, I had a bit of a giggle to this & that was the song’s intention, so I don’t mind if this gets a little bigger, which I think it will do!

- The other new arrival is ‘Moonlight’ by XXXTENTACION debuts at #31, becoming his third appearance inside the Top 40. Despite the emo rapper gaining traction outside of the US now, I feel like some people know him more for his controversial past more than his discography. He’s not only had feuds with Drake & Rob $tone, but his dark energy peaked when domestic abuse accusations emerged & he seemed to enjoy being the villain. Here’s the thing though, while I wasn’t very impressed by ‘17’, his past couple of charting songs weren’t bad, as they at least saw his flow get better & I could hear more emotion in them. However, while ‘?’ is definitely a step up from his album, I’m not calling ‘Moonlight’ one of the strong points from it. XXXTENTACION is trying to take on a much faster flow than usual which he’s clearly struggling with & I’m really not liking that glitchy production alongside the standard trap beat. I think a consistent issue of the album in general is that a few of the tracks feel unfinished & this is definitely one of them, which follows a verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure & lasts just over 90 seconds long. Nothing really stands out about the content either, where he has an admiration for this girl & gets jealous over her, as well as outlining his success. It’s very common for rappers, particularly at the moment, to either repeat themselves or go off-topic in their lyrics & I can support XXXTENTACION for opening up about his dark past & mental issues, but he’s capable of a lot better than this.

- On the albums chart, ‘The Greatest Showman’ earns an 11th consecutive week at the top, matching ‘21’ by Adele for the longest uninterrupted run at #1 on the albums chart in the past 30 years! It has sold 465,000 copies in the UK so far (304,000 from sales).

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘÷’ by Ed Sheeran (stationary at #2), ‘?’ by XXXTENTACION (debuts at #3), Dua Lipa’s self-titled album (7-4) & ‘In Your Own Sweet Time’ by The Fratellis (debuts at #5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could be entering the Top 40 for the first time: ‘In My Blood’ & ‘Lost In Japan’ by Shawn Mendes, ‘Say Amen [Saturday Night]’ by Panic! At The Disco, ‘Done’ by Charlie Puth ft Kehlani & maybe even more.

- Elsewhere, I love seeing ‘Paradise’ jumping up into the Top 10, as well as ‘Meant To Be’ getting close to the region! It’s a shame that ‘Fine Line’ probably won’t make it now.
