It's 1992 all over again with only a few #1s.
Arch Stanton
I have a question about music rights. I know composers have nicked melodies from other composers since before Beethoven, but I'm confused as to the process an artist has to go through to acquire the rights. For instance, I read that George Harrison was sued for "subconsciously" plagiarizing "He's So Fine" when he composed "My Sweet Lord". I never really noticed the similarity.
When I hear "Mama Said" by Lukas Graham, I definitely hear part of a melody from the Annie Soundtrack, the song "It's a Hard Knocks Life".
I also wonder how, especially in the early sixties, so many covers could be recorded and musicians could profit from the sales of songs by other composers. Do the artists have to get permission first? I would think that would take a long time to acquire the rights to record and sell a cover.

Tons of new entries in the top 40 sales chart including Bon jovi but it fails to make the top 100 shame on those not streaming it and actually buying it. (I am being sarcastic of course) and it is shame on the OCC

Really impressed with the sales chart this week!! P.S why is that in the mid 1990s till late 2000s that the singles debuted at their peak anf then went downwards?
Painmix King
In the 90's it was because the records would get radio play for 3 or 4 weeks before they were actually released, so when they did become available most people went out and bought them straight away, hence they often peaked at there entry position and also alot of the time meant they could enter in the Top 10 but only stay in the charts for 4 weeks

Gail
Thank you for the explanation I'd given up with popular music in 1991 Only just starting listening to them again and I listen to the same music Me kids listen to lool
Leslie Lees
OMG, a good song in the chart this week, Green Day at no.84.
James England
Head of music at Radio 1 said airplay should be included in the OC:
“From the point of view of the Official Charts Company, a stream is a stream is a stream, essentially. So whether that is somebody actively and selectively searching for Justin Bieber and pressing play on ‘Love Yourself’, or whether it is somebody pressing play on a playlist called ‘today’s top hits’, which contains the song Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’, both of those behaviours will lead to that listen counting toward the chart.”
So playlists are to blame, then?
“To my mind, a playlist that has been curated, for example by Spotify, is much more akin to radio airplay than it is to consumption of a track that you have purchased. So we have this situation where editorial on streaming services counts towards the chart, whereas editorial on the radio, for example, doesn’t.
How do you think things should change?
“Obviously the way that the chart is compiled is absolutely the domain of the Official Charts Company, but I do have a concern that the playing field, at the moment, is not level. Either we should discount curated playlist streams from the chart, or we should include radio airplay – of course that would include radio airplay across the whole country, not just Radio 1, obviously. That would bring the UK chart into line with most other charts in the world, actually, including the US chart – which has included radio airplay for decades."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something to consider, perhaps? A trial period of radio airplay to see what happens. You may get more new entries each week.
Painmix King
As i've said before many a time. Let them have whatever charts they want. Just make the "Sales Chart" the principle one, like it used to be.

With the charts being so stagnant now, won't they run out of songs to put on new NOW albums?
I Am A Stegosaurus
Did you see the last one? There's 42 songs, NO number 1s and the album had less top 10s than NOW 88 had number 1s. Jesus
I Am A Stegosaurus
Good job on Olly Murs finally getting in the top 20, only 19 but OH WELL. And DJ Snake failed on a number 1 again.
The good news...
MR. BRIGHTSIDE HAS NOW SPENT THE SECOND MOST WEEKS IN THE TOP 100! Get in there, I'm so happy!

This is beyond ridiculous! I believe streaming should account only for 10 per cent of the final result. UK Singles Chart loses its credibility :(((
ghh12
This formula has to change. In Sweden where I'm from the current method with heavy streaming works since there is amore eclectic demographic which solely uses Spotify to listen to music. There is movement every week, a song usually spends max 5 weeks at number one which is fine as long as there is at least one new top 10 every week and about 5-6 new entries per week. I think streaming should weigh way less than it does now, since it seems like it's all the same kind of artists and songs that dominate streaming, and for waaayyyy too long with each song. The chart loses its following and impact as of right now.
Josh Dransfield
I think they should do it how the US does it: Any song below the top 50 which has over 20 weeks should be eliminated from the chart.
I Am A Stegosaurus
20 weeks outside the top 50, you mean? Meh sounds fine
I Am A Stegosaurus
Then again songs like Mr Brightside wouldn't have gone anywhere. It got a well-deserved record today despite only having spent 6 weeks in the top 40.
Painmix King
I thought "Boring" when i noticed that the Top 12 tunes were the same as last week (not in the same order) then i continued that the Top 41 are all the same tunes as last week. Come on OCC you are losing all credibility
I Am A Stegosaurus
Top 41? LOL what a loophole
C
chartwatcher
Yeah it is badly broken really.
David Minogue
The UK charts used to be the best and the leader of pop charts and there are only a few songs going up and one new entry in the entire top 40, streaming isn't going to go away but what constitutes as how it should be incorporated into the official charts has to change, the UK chart is getting more boring and slow moving by the week, pop stars need many hits not just one every 6 or 12 months to be successful pop stars for the long term that is why all the old stars Abba, Queen , david bowie etc all are still in the albums charts.
R
RIME
Some artists sell albums and others sell singles. That's just the way it is. Pop acts aren't obligated to hits; you have the cause and effect a bit backwards here.
I Am A Stegosaurus
At least the song that entered the top 40 was by a good artist for once instead of songs with stupid dog videos or by that Anne-Marie idiot
C
chartwatcher
Artist's used to come in extremely low on sales back then mostly and have to climb through pure sales to get higher, some debuted high on sales, but now people can debut in the top five on the back of streams with practically no sale work involved at all stupid stuff really

Green Day only at no. 84 while that talentless ladyboy remains at no. 1??? Wot a joke

Ladyboy?

I Am A Stegosaurus
For once I sort of agree with you. Green Day are pretty good, but this is the modern charts. Green Day literally had NO chance. It's sort of surprising they're in the top 100.
C
chartwatcher
lol he does a bit
Leslie Lees
and the modern charts are complete
Mark Willmott
I do feel sorry for some artists now because of streaming. If it was just based on sales then Olly Murs would have another top 10 song this week, Bon Jovi and Green Day would have another top 40 hit and lesser names would have a chance.
I Am A Stegosaurus
Yeah, it's good that Olly climbed and Green Day entered but both should have got higher
SH
Scott Harris
"Let Me Love You" better not be battling for the top spot again next week.
I Am A Stegosaurus
Come on, just because ti sounds the same as his other songs doesn't make it bad.

Song: One Dance
Sales Position: #28
Streaming Position: #3
Overall Position: #8
I didn't expect One Dance to still be doing well.
