I just noticed - there are no new singles in the SALES top 40! This means no-one is buying anything new. For the past seven days - any new pop single releases - haven't charted in the top 40. I can't recall that ever happening in the pre-internet chart era (expect perhaps the first week of January). Few singles were released in the first week of a new year.

It's amazing how streaming has completely altered the buying habit of singles. We could get to a point when downloads are no longer relevant and the chart sales are based purely on streaming. That will mean the UK Top 40 is no longer a sales chart. Just some weird 'streaming = sales' chart.

As Pekka mentioned, the Pet Shop Boys new single, The Pop Kids, hasn't charted in this official 'combined sales' chart. I'm sure the single would have charted in the pre-internet top 40. Unless a group/artist has a decent streaming fanbase, there's little chance of chart success. The chart has completely changed and I reckon many would chart fans would say it's not an improvement over the pre-internet version!

I could not agree with you more!! U remember Radio Luxemburg? The real charts? I do and I´ve been following the UK charts since 1980. The good old days!! Pekka from Finland! PS. I hate Finnish music always have. I just don´t find it the type of music I would want to listen to! No house, no dance....all tracks are sang in Finnish. Oh s****t!

PSB had success in the 80s and 90s and have reached their peak. These days, the charts are run by kids and teens and how many of them will have heard of PSB?

Where is PET SHOP BOYS???? Their new single "The Pop Kids" is one of their best singles in years! Such a perfect dance track and U guys there in the UK don´t take no notice of it! Shame on you! This current nro 1 is...listenable but certainly not nro 1 material! I´ve always trusted U guys to show the rest of us what is worth buying and to listen to but my trust is now fading so fast! Or is the reason the steaming and other s....it that is making a difference? Please tell me! These days I only go through the sales chart or is it any different compared to the "official" chart? I´m from Finland and I have been following the UK singles and albums chart since 1980 and I don´t think that these charts these days are worth anything! I so miss RADIO LUXEMBURG! ( Spelled wrong but U know what I mean ) UR´s Pekka (Peter in English)

I meant STREAMING

Streaming keeps songs in the chart for longer as it is superior to downloads, sales etc. So the few people who stream pretty much dominate the chart.

this chart does not take into account youtube streams, which as far as my kids are concerned is the main way they listen and discover new music. until this chart accurately represents what folk are actually listening to, then even the streaming portion is to be taken with a pinch of salt....

Interesting to see a few oldies back in the sales chart. Killers @ 32, Eagles @
53, Guns N' Roses @ 58, Tracy Chapman @ 61, Foster The People @ 63 and
McAlmont & Butler @ 74

Have you checked out the Sales Chart?

Another week goes by and no new songs in the top 40. :( 2016 is proof the combined sales chart doesn't work with regard to getting fresh music into the chart week in week out. Physical sales keep the flame of the old format alive but physical sales are not relevant to people streaming their favourite songs.

Sia's "Cheap Thrills" is number 1 in Ireland! Hoping she can go number 1 in Scotland next week, let alone the whole UK!
