Although the chart show on Radio 1 has got a teeeeny bit better in recent months, I'm still not convinced about some of the decisions they make about what to play. Did we really need to hear Cruel Summer for the several-hundredth time more than a new entry from Benson Boone? Or the outstanding Green & Gold in its second week?
I can understand when it's something that needs a significant radio edit and they haven't had time to do it yet (like with Future & Metro Boomin' last week) but there's nothing like that required there.

The argument they gave when they originally stopped playing all the tracks was to prevent them playing the same thing every week - long-forgotten it seems! Natasha Bedingfield seems to be immune to that particular 'rule' too.

i was in a sports bar today playing pool and couldn’t believe how awful the music was in there. and spoiler alert: it was popular music.

it was hours of the most tasteless, faceless “dance” music which either stole from a classic because those djs have a lawsuit fetish, or something so bland it could put a baby to sleep. good dance music exists (i like chyl and martin garrix), but god were those songs unlistenable. i found myself more depressed listening to that sh*te than i would listening to duster, and that’s saying something considering duster are slowcore!

i’ve had to put up with hearing gangsta’s paradise, bittersweet symphony, stan/thank you (whichever you prefer), smalltown boy, whenever wherever, the logical song etc get completely ripped off word for word, with the most faceless vocalist and the most milquetoast beat on top of it! i’m not a fan of that supertramp song by any means but i would rather listen to that on loop than whatever i just heard. it was either that or something that sounds like it was written or produced by ai. and what’s depressing is that these songs are somehow popular… yikes. guess the british public hate music, or its fueled by chavs who have no knowledge of what decent music is

what we need is a rock and indie takeover on the charts. ooh, maybe a grunge revival. whatever, just real talent instead of some bland . i wasn’t gonna comment on here this week, but yikes it had to be said considering, again, this is what’s hot. no, this is what’s NOT.

haha! you’re right crayon! while i don’t deny there’s bad music in the charts at this point in time there was awful stuff back then

”yummy-yummy-yummy i got love in my tummy and i feel like-a loving you”

”don’t look back in angah, i heard you seyyy” (yes i hate oasis and what)

”her name was lola, she was a showgirl, but that was thirty years ago when they used to have a disco”

it’s a loss both ways. thanks for pointing out the obvious. some people are ignorant nowadays. have a great week and i hope we get a good number 1 this year!

R A N K I N G S T I M E

AS COOL AS MY DROOL TIER:

Olivia Rodrigo - obsessed [19] (So much for chart success.)

Jungle - Back On 74 [25]

Beyoncé - TEXAS HOLD 'EM [1] (Thanks. All my thanks.)

GREAT FOR A GOOD WHILE TIER:

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [16] (I hope those rumours of her duetting with Ella Henderson stay that way. Because my heart can't take it.)

Charli XCX - von dutch [39]

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer [33]

Meghan Trainor & T-Pain - Been Like This [40] (Still better than half the other American auto-tuners. Sorry, T-Pain. 😉)

Ariana Grande - yes, and? [17]

I'M CERTAINLY HAPPY WHEN THESE LOT COME ON THE RADIO TIER:

The Blessed Madonna/Clementine Douglas - Happier [26] (About time she got some respect.)

Flo Milli - Never Lose Me [34]

Noah Kahan - Stick Season [11] (Can I like him now he's out of the Top 10 now?)

SZA - Saturn [35]

Beyoncé - JOLENE [8]

Dua Lipa - Training Season [13]

ERR...... THEY'RE GOOD?? TIER:

Djo - End Of Beginning [7]

Tate McRae - greedy [32]

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - CARNIVAL [18]

Beyoncé/Miley Cyrus - II MOST WANTED [9]

Ariana Grande - we can't be friends (wait for your love) [5]

Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man - Lovers In A Lost Life [23] (That's the blanket radio airplay backfiring then.)

Hozier - Too Sweet [4]

Ariana Grande - bye [36]

Artemas - i like the way you kiss me [6]

NOT TO BE THAT KIND OF GUY, BUT THESE SONGS ARE MID-TIER:

Dasha - Austin [15]

Future/Metro Boomin/Kendrick Lamar - Like That [10]

Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? [30]

Rudimental/Skepsis/A Couple of Other Losers - Green And Gold [29] (I will make this joke 'til the day I die.)

OK PACK IT UP AND GO HOME YOU LOT TIER:

Ella Henderson ft. Rudimental - Alibi [14]

Benson Boone - Slow It Down [27] (Weird that Radio 1 didn't play this new entry. You'd think they would champion such an underwhelming talent.)

Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners - Evergreen [38]

Mark Ambor - Belong Together [22] (Blame Vance Joy's Riptide for this low position.)

cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe - Prada [31]

Becky Hill & Sonny Fodera - Never Be Alone [37]

Michael Marcagi - Scared To Start [12]

NewEra - Birds In The Sky [20]

Bryson Tiller - Whatever She Wants [24] (His album is out today as well. Didn't ask.)

EW. JUST EW. TIER:

Good Neighbours - Home [28] (There's a good reason why this is considered abysmal by certain people I know. I just haven't got a good enough reason for it.)

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things [2] (He goes up because he went down one.)

Kygo & Ava Max - Whatever [21]

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [3] (End my suffering already.)

Chart Review 05/04/24

if the OCC can't take April Fools/Easter Monday seriously then I won't take this review seriously either.

Welcome one and all, to this uneventful situation. Where we all gossip about our music fixation. For the first time since last summer, I'm bringing back this gimmick, where I try and make a cohesive review, better than Joshua Kimmich. Odd that we've got through a quarter of this forsaken year, when the most exciting thing that's occured is the new Megamind film being awful. Oh dear. Thankfully, the music's been alright, and I'm here to moan through it, with all the compassion of a disappointed druid. Last week was s***, in more ways than one, but this week is a lot more lovely, thanks to some good ol' country fun.

No surprises in the albums, where Texas were barred off for no reason, but this week is all about Cowboy Carter, so there's no need for treason. Casually slapping up the opposition was Beyonce Knowles, who now has a 5th best-seller on these British shoals. Now, for those who don't know, I usually dislike country, never one for the genre's stars and that so-called industry. Naturally, Beyonce's new one is as good as any other Bey LP, well, apart from that Carters one with Jay-Z. Whose rhymes are no longer healthy.

Now, the year's current best-sellers dropped in recent times, and if anything, the top few have committed numerous crimes. Noah Kahan, Teddy Swims and Benson Boone have all outstayed their welcome, and no one would genuinely miss them if they all lost their moolah (except the former, he's, er.. welcome).

5 new tracks make their grand entrances tonight, but the No.1 this week may just give you a fright. 'Cos this week's best-selling musician is one that's been here before. And that ain't no superstition. TEXAS HOLD 'EM by Beyonce has risen back after two weeks out, and all is well with my musical clout. No one could be more deserving in a week like this, and it's proof that the cream will always rise to the top, sis'. This is to the detriment of Benson Boone, who may yet get his revenge pretty soon. Especially as companion single Slow It Down makes an upwards movement, all the way up to 27. And what do I think?

Ummm...... It's an improvement.

Unsurprisingly, with Beyoncé's album ruling the nest, there's a couple of other hits we have to digest. First up at 8 is a cover of Jolene, in a move that gives Dolly Parton's original a brand new sheen. One place below it is a duet with Miley Cyrus, which was probably as inevitable as the coronavirus. Seriously, were you unable to pick anyone else? Was Taylor Swift too occupied performing wizard spells? (Probably.) Either way, both are good in their own little style, and will probably hang about in the Top 40 for a while. But before I continue with the rest of the new songs, there's a fair few climbers to ignite your thongs. Hozier tumbles up to 4, and now he's Spotify king, so don't be shocked if he runs riot next time we do this thing. Apparently last week there were no British artists in the Top 10, which was a cause of concern for many reasons back then. Thankfully, we have a UK guy this week to mention, due to Artemas rising to 6 with his not-commercial musical extension. Who knows, maybe he won't be a 1-hit wonder. Right now though, he should be worrying about that Top 5-shaped thunder (assuming there is thunder up there).

The Blessed Madonna flies up fourteen, exciting everyone except all the folk who are mean. Richy Mitch is back to terrorise us with his tune, that couldn't be more apt if he could produce photosynthesis pretty soon. But the two new hits of chartsville are pretty forgettable, until you actually take the time to listen, and then only one of theis regrettable. That regretful entry is Mark Ambor, who joins an endless list of shaggy-haired men, singing songs about love and heartbreak and casually surging into the Top 10. Belong Together is basically Train's Hey Soul Sister but worse, which is harsh, given I love Hey Soul Sister, but there's not much to differenciate him from the rest of this stinky marsh.

Also breaking through is Meghan Trainor, the doo-wop turned pop turned doo-wop again star, who took many people off-guard at the back end of '22 by returning to chart star(dom). Made You Look was massive (2), the honestly better Woman wasn't (22), but now she's back to shake up our lives by the dozen. Been Like This crawls up to 40 this time out, and features faded rapper and autotune-originator T-Pain being somewhat hard to scout. I like how it's gone up 60-50-40 though, and it's also actually really good, so I wouldn't mind it going higher up where more people can take note of this bud. Surely it's only a matter of time before this flower blooms to the singer's rhymes. (I regret doing this now)

Outside the biggies, and Jax Jones is a fraud, as Never Be Lonely narrowly fails seemingly to have scored (41), Artemas's other tune has climbed to a new peak so look out for that (52), meanwhile Becky Hill can be found crawling in her own misery like a tabby cat (60). Could be worse, given Camila Cabello's new song came out last week, and I Luv It's performance is so bad I'm finding it hard to speak (61), K-POP lame-o J-Hope had an EP in the stores, so that gives him a new entry for him to make you bore (64), while newgirls in the scene ILLIT do alright for their first joint (80), and G-Eazy's career continues to disappoint (79). Meanwhile Alex Warren has a 2nd Top 100 success with Save You A Seat (93), to join his other hit-in-the-works for us all to meet (90). It's just a problem that I still find him boring, and that's saying a lot when Good Neighbours are getting me snoring.

Next week will be sick, if the albums are anything to go by, and Vampire Weekend, Benson Boone, Feeder, The Black Keys and The Libertines will all try. I mean, they have to, but Beyoncé will probably stay at the summit, but the singles is also filled with artists that may not plummet. Ava Max, Imagine Dragons, London Grammar and Doja Cat will all be having a go, while Charli XCX has stuck two out simultaneously, only for the public to probably say no. Also, Glass Animals have returned, which is a problem, given they were alright until 2021 when Heat Waves became part of the man dem. And by man dem, I mean British culture, because it made me wanna gouge my eyes out with cotton buds. Let's just hope that this time, their new song turns out to be somewhat of a dud.

And that's all for now, I'm off to praise the lord. In true country style, in my MG I can afford. So relax, take a breath, and don't try to comply, 'cos I'll be back to normal next time out. GOODBYE!

(P.S. I heard that Lizzo is quitting.. something. Music? Social Media? Eating bacon for breakfast? Who knows! Whatever she's abandoning will be sorely missed, but I sincerely hope it isn't the music scene. It's been 10 years since you turned up at Glastonbury back when no one had heard of you, it surely can't end like this, right?)

I’d honestly go as far to say that ‘Saturn’ is my favourite SZA song now.

‘What Was I Made For?’ will almost definitely be back on ACR as of next week, but I’m happy it got a second run in the Top 40 following its well-deserved Oscars win! 🥺

I’m glad that ‘Jump’ lived up to its name this week for Tyla. Her debut album is incredibly underrated and she deserves so more success in the UK!

Would definitely recommend listening to it, especially if you’re a fan of RnB and amapiano. :)

Shame to see ‘Nothing Matters’ leave the chart as a result of ACR. :/

It probably would’ve been considered for the Great Tier now if it was still in the Top 40. Nonetheless, I hope The Last Dinner Party will end up getting another hit!

Beyoncé having both the biggest song and album of the week more than 25 years into her music career is very impressive.

That being said, Hozier has been at the top of the daily Spotify chart since Tuesday. I’m genuinely amazed at how well ‘Too Sweet’ is doing. It would be incredible seeing him get his first #1 hit in 2024! ❤️
