It’s just funny how this person is doing it to all comments no matter who they’re from! 😩

IMHO they should not allow down-voting, only up.

And if one doesn't agree with a comment, he/she just does not vote.

36 (Jungle - Back on 74) and 38 (163margs ft Digga D - Hide and Seek) should be marked as new entries in the Top 40 as they, previously to today,  were only in the Top 100.
Or am I wrong?

Edit: I commented the above while in the Top 40 but now it is shown in the Top 100? This is strange!

Chart Review 06/10/23

[WARNING. THIS REVIEW MAY CYCLE INTO ONE OF THOSE FANBOY LOVE-INS YOU SEE ON THE INTERNET. TRY AND TAKE THIS WITH A PINCH OF SALT, BECAUSE I'M GONNA BE A LITTLE BIASED.]

This week was ACR week. I could stop there, but let's keep going.

If you were to pattern a guess as to WHO suffered, well, you only need to look at all of the huge falls taken by the long-running hits of the summer to come to a conclusion. Taylor Swift. Peggy Gou. Calvin Harris. Gunna. D.O.D. Charli XCX. THEY'VE ALL FALLEN. All of these hits are getting ended quicker than some of my college friendships. Which is saying a lot, coming from me.

Doesn't affect the top end too much though. Doja Cat casually (barely) grabbing a 5th week at Numero Uno with Paint The Town Red, even though she probably wishes she hadn't. Not as if this is a complaint about the song, not at all, but you felt like she grabbed it at the death there. This has something to do with the fact that Doja Cat relinquished her Spotify title midweek to this week's runner-up. Poor old Kenya Grace, eh? Stuck with an absolute dog's dinner of a song that went viral on TikTok, and forced to be No.2 again this week. What went wrong? Nothing, obviously. She'll probably grab the top spot by Halloween, assuming the rise of Tate McRae (again) doesn't consume her hopes and dreams. She's certainly doing better than venbee, that's for sure.

Now, naturally, the collapse of several of last week's big and mid hitters results in a number of songs flying up like tiny little rockets, ready to pierce the upper end of the charts with small, miniature impacts that grow into huge grievances. The likes of Miley Cyrus (groan), Billie Eilish, Florence + the Machine, SZA and Issey Cross suddenly reverse their reverses, and manoeuvre up a few incraments, but becoming the latest TikTok megahit is Water by Tyla. Ms. Seethal from Johannesburg and her R'N'B swellups have finally paid off, as the song creeps up to 10th place this week. Great for her and all, even though I wanted Asking by Sonny Fodera there instead. Still, there's always next week (bet it stays at 11).

Billy Gillies also shoots into the Top 20 with his slightly-above-average floorfiller, whilst Mitski looks set to add her name to the list of 1-hit wonders (jk) as My Love All Mine All Mine staggers up, like, 20 places. Now all she needs to do is get her album back into the public eye, and Ed Sheeran-esque levels are assured.

Speaking of that guy, it hasn't exactly been as right as rain for him this week. Putting out an album we'd barely heard last week turned out to be a double-edged sword for the most polarising man in Britain. On the soft side, it got to No.1 on the album chart like all the other ones, and it continues from where - left off in terms of SOUND and LYRICS and all those nouns my music teacher liked to repeat into my eardrums. But it's come at the cost of his precious chart positions.

The 3 songs that have slipped in have only got to 27, 49 and 83, which would be reasonable for someone like Kylie (who falls to 8 on 'teh albumz'), but for him is ABSOLUTELY CATASTROPHIC. I know he didn't feel like promoting this one but come on, you're ED. You're known for bullying us into getting up Top 10 hits. What happened here!? Oh, and American Town is an alright song, but it could be better. Not like it's any matter to him, given he has yet another OCC award for his mantlepiece. Thinking about it, we haven't seen Doja Cat wield one yet, so maybe he could donate her one. Just a suggestion.

American Town is one of 6+1 additions to the 40, that +1 being Rema who I hate. Moving on, and the endless nagging from the BTSARMY, countless remixes on iTunes, and the odd physical release or two have forced Jung Kook's latest effort 3D to gatecrash the Top 5. I mean, it's better than his last one, Jack Harlow does some pretty cool stuff on it, and he's clearly the break-out star of the K-POP KREW (is that even a thing), but songs like this are always gonna carry the stigma of being a little manipulated, and not of any deserving quality. I mean, his Spotify streams have been virtually nil compared to his rivals, and BTS fans notoriously abandon their songs after a week, so if you see him barely scraping the Top 20 next time out, erm... well....

DON'T BE SURPRISED.

Now then, what else is here, umm.. hmm.. give me a sec... Ooh! I know!

(OMG THAT SONG BY JUNGLE HAZ HIT THE 40 BOYZ I'M SO HYPED THAT TOM MCFARLAND GUY GIVES ME SLIGHT TINGLES AND I WANT BUS YEARNIN' TATOOED ON MY BACKSIDE!!!?!)

Now that we got that out the way, we can officially congratulate English collective Jungle on FINALLY breaking the Top 40, after 9 years and 4 albums of trying. Previously best known for Busy Earnin' which was seemingly on EVERY soundtrack in the world but only got to 158 (their best was the 94 effort of Time a few months later), they can scrub that albatross off their necks, as Back on 74 creeps up to 36 after 5 weeks of playing the hokey-cokey. It's joyous, it's jazzy (not that jazzy, fools), it's viral, AND it's incredible. Not the best song of 2023, obviously. There's about 20 other songs better than this. But this is definitely one for me to talk about at the end of the year.

The other 3 hits could be forgiven for being swamped under the hype, but they all have something to talk about. At 34 is Troye Sivan who really wants to follow up Rush, doesn't he. Even though it's still there. His new one Got Me Started samples an old song, which immediately releagtes it to the bottom half of MY rankings, but you suddenly feel a little relieved that he's picked Shooting Stars from 2009. You know, that meme song? The one that goes BEEEEP-BE-BEEP, BE-B-BEEEEP-BE-BEEP? Yeah. That one. Song's kinda mid though.

One place above it is the first Top 40 entry for the latest musical genre to grip us. PHONK. Supposedly inspired by Memphis rap and trap music, it's main purpose is to clog up TikToks as some sort of royalty-free music or whatever, but it's been making splashes for a litte while now. 'Songs' like Murder On My Mind, LONELY BUZZARDS, and METAMORPHOSIS have all graced the Top 100, but they are all bested by ecstasy by an act called SUICIDAL-IDOL, whom the only pictures I can find of her is an emo teen from 2006 (that's what it looks like anyway). 95 seconds long, it comes in a normal variant, and the slightly more-streamed slower version that's been doing the rounds, and at the end of all of that, it's just kinda mediocre. It also joins the long line of Top 40 songs that Radio 1 won't play, thus finally giving me an excuse to compare her to Richard Hawley. Remember Richard Hawley? He had a hit in 2007, but it didn't get played in full that day. Poor him. And poor SUICIDAL-IDOL. Imagine if it goes Top 10.

Also new is the latest rap song no one cares about, Hide and Seek by a guy called 163Margs, who achieves a rare feat only a few new artists can ever do. Get a Top 40 hit with your first ever upload to Spotify. Doesn't make it good though, no matter how hard he and Digga D try to spice it up. Although it did get played on Radio 1 however, which kinda makes PHONK music look dead. Which it isn't.

Also new are Noah Kanah, Dominic Fike and Blanco, PinkPantheress could've done better, whilst Jorja Smith's new LP charts at 3, yet doesn't spawn a song that can get higher than 50 at the present time. Could be worse. You could be Mae Muller, whose new album has flopped so hard you wonder why she represented us at Eurovision. No wonder the people that chose her and Sam Ryder before that have decided to abandon their post for 2024.

And with that ends this page of action. See you next week for when Drake takes over the chart. For the 51,612th time.

(P.S. blink-182 have done better than last time, as they only fall to 67. Campbell & Alcemist look most likely to grab a Top 40 placing next week with a song from 1998. And there are new remade albums from Roger Waters and Paramore to battle Drake next week. Only in 2023 could this stuff happen. ;) Might as well enjoy it before Mariah Carey comes back into our lives, eh?)

Disappointed that none of Jorja Smith’s tracks got high enough to make these rankings this week. The album was really good and shows how much of an R&B talent she truly is!

I’d certainly take her over most of the new arrivals we got instead this week. Out of the seven that entered the region, I only really liked one of them! 😩

Congratulations to Tate McRae on matching her career peak with ‘Greedy’. :)

while sexual is the best hit of 2016, i prefer most of tlop (best song fade), most of wildflower by the avalanches (best song because i’m me), some of blonde (best song futura free), ain’t it funny by danny brown, shelter by porter robinson, and probably some others lol

neither did i tbf 😩

also, to give cruel summer some credit, it’s definitely not the worst taylor song to chart in the last year 🗿

fr!! took her long enough tho

a pearl and washing machine heart really should’ve been top 10 hits

Man, I'm disappointed that NSYNC's new single "Better Place" didn't reach the singles chart despite the heavy rotation from the likes of Capital Radio, though it has charted in Global's Big Top 40 Show chart but congrats to Mitski on scoring her first Top 20 hit.

the big top 40 is a chart tho. no matter how hard they try to make it seem “official”, it’s never official. literally itunes and radio airplay and that’s it. miley cyrus NEVER spent multiple weeks at number one with her latest; it was really number 12 where actual people chose the position.

yeah i literally get so irked by big top 40, capital & heart radio play and one online music platform (i don't even think itunes is streaming is it?) decide it. WHO is letting this chart exist

Well, I consider it to be the Official Charts' major competitor.

It's Apple Music and iTunes and uses the Billboard Hot 100 method of including radio airplays, which this chart in question doesn't.

wow, american town only at 27. personally i think the song is dreadful but im surprised its all the way down there, did ed not promote?

on a happier note - mitski in the top 20!!! long overdue but she’s always welcome! and huge shoutout to one of my favourite artists for rebounding back into the top 20 - that would be sza with snooze. top tune! nice to see jungle in the top 40 region too.

and i think it’s ironic that cruel summer drops on the week i get really obsessed with it, heh.

btw, this won’t have any impact on the charts, but that teen jesus and the jean teasers album was really good. lights out and salt were great singles, and ahhhh! reminds me of misery business. definitely check it out if you’re interested! ^w^

Omg if you're comparing it to 'Misery Business', then I have to check it out! ❤️

Ed's album probably didn't do very much the way of singles because it's a much more acoustic and less mainstream album compared to his previous offerings.

bestie i sent you it last night and you didn’t line it up like you promised 😤

but yeah, i shouldn’t be surprised. ed never released any singles for autumn variations like he did with subtract (eyes closed and boat). he knows his strategies to get to the summit tho, so i’m still bracing myself anytime he announces sum

Speaking of Paramore, they've released a new version of This Is Why where other acts get to massacre, but I don't really feel like watching Wet Leg and Foals try to pick apart those masterpieces.

bit disappointed at the #1, thought strangers had a decent chance this week

'Paint The Town Red' could go on ACR next week, so that would put 'Strangers' in a prime position to take over. :)

i like paint the town red a lot but it’s got nothing on strangers. i hope the latter can shine for even just one week

Paint The Town Red getting overtaken by TWO songs on the Spotify chart is a good omen for the future.

‘Back On 74’ entering the Top 40 is absolutely fantastic news.

I love the soulful falsetto and the video choreography is absolutely stunning. Very pleased that this is going viral! ❤️

This was me before clicking the video. Which I haven't seen. And am gonna look at in like an hour or so.

They totally deserve this, even though it's TikTok's fault.

Shame to see ‘Cruel Summer’ and ‘(It Goes Like) Nanana’ both on ACR, but at least Taylor and Peggy both had incredible runs with them over the summer!
