& just when taylor swift couldn't impress me even more...she's been very generous to her touring staff giving her drivers $100k bonuses!  as well as other nice bonuses to her stage and crew.  and she's been encouraging her young fans to register to vote here in the states getting something like 35k newly registered voters in just 1 day!  good job tay-tay!!

& some republicans have been calling her names on twitter...and guess what?  the swifties are out in full force!  LOL!

One thing I love about Taylor is that she always values her team. :)

Glad she's also encouraging young Americans to go out and get their voices heard!

oh & if anyone is wondering who the artist is in my icon, pic...the one & only buddy holly!!  early rock n roll pioneer who sadly passed away in 1959.  check out his classic 'that'll be the day' and you'll see why ;).  everyone from elton john, the rolling stones, the beatles were influenced by him.  that's how the beatles got their name...buddy's band was called the crickets and the beatles were coming up with other bug names to call themselves...no joke!  it was john who came up with the name and spelling 'the beatles.'

Chart Review 29/09/23

You know, if there was ever an award for the most pointless and unrewarding review of all time, it would probably be the one from Radio 1's Chart Show this week. Jack Saunders boldly decided to interview Billie Eilish, several weeks AFTER she'd been at No.1, and at this point was rapidly tumbling down the chart in short order. I mean, why, exactly, was this a good idea? It took up about 10 minutes of the thing. Are the charts just THAT boring and unconventional to you that you had to make this interview happen? Hmm?

Oh right. The chart. Well, Doja Cat is STILL at the top, unsurprisingly, with Paint The Town Red now clocking in a fourth week at the summit, to the delight of, well, not that many people actually. I know losing hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers for a remark you made was a bad move, but look. SHE'S NO.1, and there isn't any real challengers for the throne next week, looking at the Spotify numbers (how is there only 1 Ed Sheeran track in the Top 50. You'd think he'd have at least 10.)

Of course, her album didn't go down as well chart-wise, with Scarlet only reaching a desultory 5. Admittedly, yes, tough competition this week. Headie One & K-Trap's collaborative album was bound to do something, as we'll return to later in this writeup, but yeah, no one was beating Kylie. Was you really gonna expect anything else from one of the biggest career revivals of the decade? Even though none of the songs on Tension have gotten any higher than 47 or something, you'd be lucky to find ANYONE who would call this result as an undeserved victory. I just hope this doesn't tick off the people who regularly jumped onto the album chart in the Disqus days, and moaned about how Kylie ain't relevant, even though they were talking about Madonna's remix album that hung around way longer than it should've.

Off-topic, I am? Good, 'cause the top half looks tried and distraught. Mainly due to resolute climbing by the likes of, ahem, Kenya Grace, cassö, Tate McRae, Becky Hill, Chase & Status, Sonny Fodera, Gunna, and Tyla. But you know, 7 new hits this week, so that's always a positive. Even though there's only one in the Top 20 this week. And it's a song that you'd have a near impossible time hearing on the radio. Nothing wrong with this week's No.20 or anything, but it just seems so, you know...

W E I R D

Leading the sevenfold is Nines, who, fresh off his first Top 10 song in the form of Tony Soprano 2, and an album that had the NERVE to battle Ed Sheeran that one time (yes, he topped the album chart in 2020, but that isn't the point), is now a man who has the potential to sell like hot cakes. Just a shame he's done one of them Daily Duppy things. For those who aren't aware, Daily Duppy is a regular series of rap freestyles headlined by GRM Daily, who are capable of hiring any old UK fast-talker into boiling themselves alive for a few minutes. This is only the 2nd Daily Duppy to make the Top 40, this one following the Central Cee edition which reached No.35 at the start of 2022. Which kinda set the tone for how BONKERS that year was overall. I still get goosebumps looking at the stuff that happened in those 12 gruelling months.

In other news, the next 2 new hits are a classic case of two artists who just WON'T GO AWAY. First up, Tom Odell, who's only had 3 Top 40 hits prior to this, and none since 2016. He is of course known for Another Love, which reached No.10 in 2013 AND 2023. So naturally, whatever he did next was bound to get people on their feet. As of right now, it's certainly working. Black Friday enters at 21, and given it actually HAS streams, you can at least breathe a sigh of relief that he hasn't been forgotten.

Also surviving on nostalgia from bygone times and nothing else are blink-182, who, yes, did top the album chart in the past decade but that has nothing to do with the trio you sold your soul to in the 2000s. This is song No.2 from their upcoming new LP/getting the band back together nonsense, and the chart position for ONE MORE TIME is slightly better than their previous entry. All eyes on next week to see if it can stay in the Top 100 for more than 1 week. Because EDGING didn't, and that's the bar they've set themselves. Album out in a month or whatever.

As for the other new hits, two of them are the results of STRENGTH BY STRENGTH, the No.4 album this week, and a collaborative effort from Headie One (needs no introduction, Top 10 hits include Ain't It Different, 18HUNNA and Martin's Sofa) and K-Trap (who is best known for his Top 20 snoozer Warm and nothing else). Neither of these entries are worth their salt, being as they are generic rap trifle, but in my opinion, TRIPLE THREAT, which sees Clavish join them for a couple of verses, is slightly under PARK CHINOIS, which charted the week before this, climbs 11 places as a result, and thus joins the long line of UK Top 40 hits that never got played on Radio 1. A list that includes the Super Furry Animals, XXXTENTACION, and pretty much everything that even remotely pokes fun at the British democracy. Then again, it would be absolute carnage if a song like Scrap The Monarchy ever got to No.1, so it's probably best we hedge our bets and stay mutual on this topic. Right, government? (insert cheeky wink to imply that I actually like those mumbling Conservatives. Which I don't, obvs.)

Then there's the typical Doja Cat album track, in this case being Agora Hills, which has a video, and some memorable lines, which automatically takes it above some other rap sludge I could compare it to. But also we have Mitski, an artist who recently slammed her way to No.4 on the album chart with her LP, erm, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We, but who has now suddenly graduated from indie drooler to internet drooler, with her song My Love Mine All Mine being dragged away from the record players, and plugged into TikTok for the masses to indulge themselves to. Speaking of which, American chart service Billboard recently launched a TikTok Top 50, where they keep track of all the song that get clicked on by the users, and then make a chart out of it. We're 3 weeks into this, and currently ruling the roost are FamousSally & YB with a little ditty called Wassup Gwayy. And the cover is horrific. It looks like it was made in 4 minutes on Photoshop. It's also not very good. Generic rap song, what else is there to say. This chart can also be examined as to why Tate McRae, Taylor Swift, Tyla and Paul Russell are doing as well as they are. Just a shame I couldn't care less about it.

The rest of the chart is your usual slog of forgettable tunes, but this is the point in history where I officially start protesting for weeks on end. People, ladies, gents, LGBT community, rise up, and get Back On 74 by Jungle into that Top 40. I know it's TikTok powered, and it can get on people's nerves, but this is the best that these people have ever done in their 9-year career, so get it in there. Otherwise I'll follow up next week's review with a rant at all the songs keeping it out from its rightful position. The bottom half of the 40. The only other song that looks like it could be in the chart by Halloween is ecstacy by an act called Suicidal-Idol, and it sounds like one of those songs you listen to when it's 2am, your eyes feel like gravel, and you've been subjected to 635 different renditions of Cruel Summer online. Or, if you're not paying attention, imagine METAMORPHOSIS by Interworld, or snowfall by Øneheart & reidenshi, which both scattered into the lower half of the 100 earlier this year. Combine the two, add a few lyrics, and you get this song. Hardly worth my 95 seconds.

And we're done here. Looks like I'll go off to start swotting for A-Levels for the next few months. Or whatever my college is making me do. Huzzah!

(P.S. There are other debuts, but A), I already talked about blink-182 and Kylie, B), Troye Sivan's followup to Rush isn't worth your time, and C) I swear G-Eazy hasn't been relevant for 7 years. Eh. Guess I'll have to prepare for the latest ex-BTS song to zoom into my chart of 2023 in the 200s somewhere.)

mitski got a top 40 hit!! well overdue, but still overjoyed 😍😍 my fav songs of hers would be a pearl, washing machine heart and last words of a shooting star

hope back on 74 can enter the top 40 next week, and i love the re-entry for n back following the great summer walker remix

doja cat’s album was great too - my fav track was skull and bones. i gave up on the headie one & k-trap collab album after two songs tho because im not a fan of drill, and i refused to listen to kylie’s after padump padump

and last but not least: happy 30th anniversary to by green day. it’s a very consistent album made by one of my favourite bands of all time

I just thought N Back re-entered because Bakar had a new album out, but I guess having Summer Walker appear on your song works out for everyone.

I prefer the original though, 'cause I ain't a fan of old Summer,

'My Love Mine All Mine' definitely isn't Mitski's best song, but I'm really happy for her that she got a Top 40 hit nonetheless. :)

Doja's album isn't for me sadly, and like you, the Headie One & K-Trap probably won't be to my taste.

Sad to hear that the new amazing album from ANASTACIA didn't even make the Top 40!! OUR SONGS is such a sublime album!! With BEST DAYS, her best single in years!!

At least it made the Top 2 in Germany!! So glad to hear that!

A

Alfie

Honestly, I completely forgot she had an album out. I know she hasn't relevant for nearly 20 years, but Kylie's spent a decade on the sidelines before roaring back into contention, so it ain't impossible that Anastacia can make it work.

Why yes. My knowledge of the English lexicon has been greatly expanded. Thank you for notifying that there is indeed an Ed Sheeran album right now, for all of us lucky mortals to consume.

And no, I'm not salty or anything.

Who agrees with me that we should just have a top 40 singles chart?

Theres no need for a top 100 that barely changes for years on end. Its stagnant.

The top 40 doesn't change that much either. It wouldn't be much of a difference.

I think we should still keep The Top 100.

Some songs do seem to never drop out of the charts, like Mr Brightside.

Things like this never used to happen before Downloads and Streaming.

Check it out, I think your find out I'm right.

avatar

the chart still gets compiled as a top 40 (omitting 41-100). just click “more” at the top of the page, and under the singles charts you will see “official singles chart top 40”. hope this sorts things out!

i like the idea of a top 100 tho. sure, there are songs have been in there a while like brightside or that capaldi song, but i also like to be on the lookout for future hits in the region

I love how we went from so many really quiet weeks for new Top 40 arrivals to two busy ones in a row! 😅

Shame that ‘The Weekend’ and ‘On My Love’ both left the region though, as well as me having to put the Awful Tier back into use again. :/
