I am working on my favourite 50 of the year, as is everyone else, and I can confirm that 7 of this week's Top 40 are in it. You can probably guess which.

IF THESE SONGS DIDN'T EXIST, MY LIFE WOULDN'T BE WORTH LIVING TIER:

Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right? (did I mention GUTS is out today?)

Florence + the Machine - Dog Days Are Over

THESE SONGS DESERVE PRETTY MUCH ALL THE SUCCESS THEY GET TIER:

Olivia Rodrigo - vampire

Peggy Gou - (It Goes Like) Nanana

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THESE SONGS PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE TIER:

Burna Boy ft. Dave - Cheat On You

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer

Issey Cross - Bittersweet Goodbye (it's ACTUALLY good. I feel cheated)

Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding - Miracle

THEY SOUND GOOD ON RADIO 1 OR WHATEVER TIER:

Calvin Harris & Sam Smith - Desire

Charli XCX - Speed Drive

Chase & Status ft. Every MC in Britain - Baddadan

Gunna - fookoomean (only took a million weeks, but it's slowly getting better)

EH. THAT IS ALL. TIER:

Sonny Fodera/MK - Asking

Troye Sivan - Rush (physical releases will be the death of us)

Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For?

Selena Gomez - Single Soon (starting to think her comeback is a lil' deflated)

Burna Boy - City Boys

ANOTR/Abel Balder - Relax My Eyes

SOMETHING IS A LITTLE OFF-PUTTING TIER:

Miley Cyrus - Flowers

STILL UNSURE ABOUT IF THEY DO ANYTHING FOR ME TIER:

Jazzy - Feel It

Oliver Anthony Music - North Men North Of Richmond

OK. THESE SONGS TIER:

Kenya Grace - Strangers

Nicki Minaj/Ice Spice - Barbie World

BOU ft. Slay - Closer

Jazzy - Giving Me

GET THESE SONGS AS FAR AWAY FROM ME AS POSSIBLE TIER:

Chart Review 08/09/2023

I'M IN COLLEGE. ALSO SOME MUSIC STUFF HAPPENED.

Yep, I'm back from holiday, which means I can actually come up with a coherent review for the first time in ages, something that couldn't have been predicted 24 hours ago when the most farcical thing in awards history occured. But more on that later. (this definitely won't be a recurring joke)

On the singles chart, we may as well be counting sheep for all the static that goes on nowadays, but the No.1 spot is as fragile as the Mercury Prize. One wrong choice, and your music vision falls apart. We are also still under a spell cast by every American female we ever laid eyes on, as this O-Rod sadly can't sustain popularity for more than 7 days and falls to third position. So who's top.

well...

Doja Cat is.

That's right, people, the lady who made such huge inroads with Say So and Streets and Kiss Me More and all the other ones is the now the greatest lady to ever live. Even if her fans may not agree. Yeah, so Doja Cat doesn't have a soft spot for ALL her fans, which caused quite a furore in the Diva community. Because these things can still be triggered apparently. Naturally, in this post-XXXTENTACION and 6ix9ine world, all publicity is good publicity, which has seen the Dionne Warwick-slaughtering Paint The Town Red rocket up the table and claim her first UK chart-topper.

Obviously, this is a glorious sight and one to rejuvenate your hopes in the likes of Nicki Minaj, whose latest effort has failed to break the 40 today, although that song has something to do with Nicki NOT rapping. I assume that's her supporters' kryptonite or whatever. But it ain't gon' go dahn well in the Swift household, which is bigger than you think. Cruel Summer now moves to bridesmaid position, the kind of showing that makes you wonder why people listen to that album cut in the first place. Still, I can at least pray for a song like Kiss With A Fist by Florence + the Machine to suddenly clatter the Top 10 in 2029. Hopefully.

In other news, and Fred Again.. didn't have a great time yesterday. Mainly 'cause he didn't attend the Mercury, but there were other factors in place. These factors were not enough for everybody, including me, to discover how amazing his latest song really is. That, coupled with everybody losing their marbles over what to actually CALL the track, sees adore u give Mr. Again.. his FIRST! TOP TEN! TRACK! wow. Knowing him, his next release will be something like, uh.., Jennifer (Get Me An Ambulance), and it will only get to peak at 82. Just a presumption and all that jazz.

wait. Did I just say jazz?

Yeah, before I continue, I need to pronounce to you all that a great musical tradition has left this planet earlier this week. I know it sounds wrong, but....

A jazz act has won the Mercury Prize. My whole life is ruined.

And in other news, there's three new entries and I haven't heard any of them, which is not promising. But from what I've heard of them so far, none of them are much cop. In at 20 is the latest drum'n'bass sensation, Kenya Grace, who clearly didn't learn from the tragic disasters that venbee utilised last year, if the sounds of Strangers is anything to go by. You had one job, Kenya. ONE. JOB.

One place above her is the greatest career revival since the last one, Kylie Minogue. After the whole world stopped to observe the mesmerising popularity of Padam Padam earlier this year, the hype has reached the kind of levels where Kylie doesn't need to flog physical releases to get hits anymore. Tension is at 19, and it's fine, what do you want me to say. There's nothing special about it. Also here is Jazzy, who can at least extinguish her 1-hit wonder tag in the form of Feel It, which is AT LEAST better than her last hit. But not by much.

As for the other stuff, Griff probably could've done better with her return to the music industry, as Vertigo enters at a measly EIGHTY-FOUR. The Top 20 success of Black Hole seems a long way away now. Not only is her beaded hair lost to time, as well as her chart form, but Doja Cat is a little caught up with releasing songs to pay attention to her current success, new song Demons down at 53 this week. Then again, I don't think she'll be worrying about that TOO much.

Also here are Tion Wayne, Måneskin, Tunde (not the Lighthouse Family guy) and the iTunes-powered Paul Russell, but more importantly, JUNGLE ARE BACK! The Busy Earnin' people! And their song Back On 74 isn't awful. Praise the lord! It sounds a little like the Ezra Collective- AAAHHH I REMINDED MYSELF OF THE MERCURY AGAIN!! GET ME AN AMBULANCE, JENNIFER!! ;(

I didn't actually lose an eye from overreacting, but the jokes don't say themselves. Anyways, bye!

(P.S. Oh yeah, and the guy from Smash Mouth died. That sucked. I remember All Star getting to No.4 in the Billboard 100 before Shrek happened and ruined their career. Also, I'm pretty sure ZWE1HVNDXR is my Wi-Fi password.)

The new king 🤴 of country music ZACH BRYAN is making waves in the UK 🇬🇧 and already at number 1 in the USA 🇺🇸 with his brilliant new single I Remember EVERYTHING 😀!

A

Alfie

Not to take anything away from his success, but...

Literally any country star could get to the US No.1 spot. I know their chart laws work a little different, but there's a reason Morgan Wallen got 16 weeks at the top in the states. :/

Bit rich for a man who's spent the entirety of the 2020s badmouthing certain artists, but you do you. I'm not gonna stop you. I'd probably be arrested if I saw you in public.

Actually, thinking about it, so would you. ;)

, shame that Timbaland’s ‘Keep Going Up!’ with JT and Nelly Furtado is nowhere to be seen. :/

Not a bad debut for Kylie at all though. Interested to hear the album in a couple of weeks!

Hey dear buddy! I really miss the interaction we had on Disqus! Having a second top 20 in a raw for Kylie is amazing!!!

A couple of years ago it was impossible to think! Tension is amazing! (Though I couldn't see it on your personal chart)...and the album will be a pop dance banger

avatar

Piran

-1

Hey Damian! How are you doing?

I miss DIsqus too and I hope OCC decide to bring it back one day, but yeah, it's incredible how she went from no Top 50 singles on 'Disco' to two Top 20 singles on 'Tension'.

I think like with 'Padam Padam', the title track will be one that slowly creeps up on me! Maybe it'll debut on my charts when the album's released in 10 days from now?

avatar

Didn’t even know who Kenya Grace was up until this week… then I found out ‘Strangers’ blew up on TikTok and Instagram, so I guess it’s not really much of a surprise seeing it here after all.

Very good song though! 👌

entertaining yt vids u got a big forehead tho

A

2

I could name worse charts. For example, The Great Ed Sheeran Takeover of 2017 was enough for me to stick my head in the sand.

And every time LadBaby got to Christmas No.1, I slowly suffocated myself to erase the terrible memories.

Maybe that's why I don't eat sausage rolls.

6

Absolutely delighted to see Griff’s new single in the chart.

‘Vertigo’s an amazing song and she really deserves the success! ❤️

Good to see Fred Again.. with his first Top 10 hit. :)

‘Adore U’ has really grown on me these past couple weeks!

RIP Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth! 🙏

So gutted to hear that he passed away only aged 56 on Monday. The band’s iconic hits around the turn of the millennium were part of so many good memories for me growing up!

I was checking through the OCC archives and can’t believe ‘All Star’ only peaked at #24 and spent nine weeks in the Top 100. Proof that you don’t necessarily need to make it big in the charts to have a powerful legacy in music.

A

Alfie

2

Yeah...

Although, All Star did well in the American charts, so that may have been the catalyst for the legacy that they got in the end.

Still, sad news and all that. I liked Walkin' On The Sun as much as anyone else.

avatar

Piran

0

Agreed. I think it was more its used in films, pop culture, parodies/memes, etc., but either way, it's aged incredibly well and the amount of tributes there have been towards him shows the true impact their music had on everybody.

It might be far from my favourite song of hers, but congratulations to Doja Cat on finally landing her first #1 single in the UK! 😊

Even if I don’t see ‘Cruel Summer’ going all the way to the top, I’m absolutely ecstatic that Taylor’s in the runner-up position and reaching a new peak with it.
