BEST SONG FOR DADDY KOOKIE:

Weight of the world on your shoulders
I'll kiss your waist and ease your mind
I must be favored to know ya
I'll take my hands and trace your linesIt's the way that you can ride
It's the way that you can ride (oh-oh, oh-oh)
Think I met you in another life
So break me off another time (oh-oh, oh-oh)
You wrap around me and you give me life
And that's why night after night
I'll be ' you rightMonday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Saturday, Sunday (a week)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Seven days a week
Every hour, every minute, every second
You know night after night
I'll be ' you right, seven days a weekYou love when I jump right in
All of me, I'm offering
Show you what devotion is
Deeper than the ocean is
Wind it back, I'll take it slow
Leave you with that afterglow
Show you what devotion is
Deeper than the ocean isIt's the way that you can ride
It's the way that you can ride (oh-oh, oh-oh)
Think I met you in another life
So break me off another time (oh-oh, oh-oh)
You wrap around me and you give me life
And that's why night after night
I'll be ' you right, oh-oh-oh-ohMonday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Saturday, Sunday (a week)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Seven days a week
Every hour, every minute, every second
You know night after night
I'll be ' you right, seven days a week (yeah)Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Saturday, Sunday (a week)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (oh, oh)
Seven days a week
Every hour, every minute, every second
You know night after night
I'll be ' you right, seven days a week (Big Latto)Tightly take control, tightly take his soul
Take your phone and put it in the camera roll
Leave them clothes at the door
Watchu waitin' for? Better come and hit yo' goals
Uh, he jump in it, both feet
Goin' 'til the sun up, we ain't gettin' no sleep
Seven days a week, seven different sheets
Seven different angles, I could be your fantasyOpen up, say, "Ah"
Come here, baby, let me swallow yo' pride
What you on? I can match your vibe
Hit me up and I'ma Cha Cha Slide
You make Mondays feel like weekends
I make him never think 'bout cheatin' (uh)
Got you skippin' work and meetings
it, let's sleep in, yeah (seven days a week, ooh)Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Saturday, Sunday (a week)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Seven days a week
Every hour, every minute, every second (oh, oh, oh)
You know night after night

I was 96% in agreement with this assessment (there's no way the Dua Lipa song belongs in that lowly category), and then you had to defend that disgusting POS by that plant from the far-right. It really is bad, but to each their own.

And yes, "800 HEAVEN" is probably the worst top 20 single of the last five years. I wonder how they could come up with such stupid lyrics.

Chart Update 25/08/2023

A lot of things have happened this week to little old me. Firstly, I got my GCSE results, and I can officially rule myself out of ever becoming a scientist in my lifetime, without hoping for a freak accident. Second, I'm on holiday in Cornwall, so to commemorate how rushed this review is, I will try to do it in rhyming couplets.

Ladies and gentleman, stop what you're doing. The charts are exciting, so start with your wooing. The Barbie songs may be old, but by golly they are lasting. And with a change at the top, the results are quite chastening. Everyone's secret crush, Dua Lipa herself, has now claimed a fourth chart-topper to make us feel elf (Excited Like Fudge). Dance The Night has done it, and I for one am glad. 'Cause as far as I'm concerned, her not being there would make me mad. Two of her best-sellers were duets, which is a little worrying, but now's not the time for that, because the sales they are hurrying. So congrats to young Dua, and her legions of fans. And the people at Warner Bros., whose brains will be frying like pans.

The new hits, sadly, are hard to come by, so I might as well run down some climbers to make us look wry. No one look any further than Doja, the Cat who can make magic out of a hat, and with her eleven-place jump, safe to say Paint The Town Red ain't tat. Less positive, however, is the unmemorable cassö, who should be lucky he's not been sued yet, his success is so "Picasso". Prada's up twelve, and I am not happy, but there are other stuff here that makes me go snappy. For instance, Dog Days Are Over, which I may love to bits, but is only here 'cause Guardians 3 did things, which makes my emotions the pits. And one of the two exits from the tenners, is Olivia Rodrigo, which isn't very "zenners" (look, something had to rhyme, ok?). And Rudimental come back, for no other reason, than to make me feel depressed, whenever the season.

The album chart sees Hozier make his mark on the world, as his album I forgot the name of, turns the album market swirled. His singles impact, however, is somewhat  of a mix, with his best showing down at 86. Jazzy keeps climbing, and so does Prinz, which causes me to lament, and contemplate putting this review in the bins.

Also new here are Giggs and Billy Gillies, but now for a song that gives me the chillies. For those who don't know the tale of this next song, oh boy, WE WILL BE HERE ALL DAY LONG. North Men North Of Richmond is a pretty average song, for starters, even though we barely get ANY folk in the charters. And I'm sure that Oliver Anthony Music is a nice guy in person, but this song makes him appealling as Paul Merson (weird metaphor, but whatever). Being labelled a "right-wing anthem" certainly doesn't help, and it rising 41 places is also somewhat of a yelp. Let's just hope it disappears quickly, before my taste for this song goes rapidly sickly.

But yeah, that's that, enjoy the show. I'll be back next time, away I go!

(P.S. Sadly, this review coincides with the return of everybody's least favourite commenter, Frank Griffin, who went from just your average guy, to the most insufferable human being in the 2020s. This is his first time reporting in this modern era. Just making sure you're aware of his presence, in case he blackmails us into thinking that O-Rod's new found love of guitar isn't okily-dokily.)

that rich men north of richmond seems to be picking up on streaming now. here i thought it’d be sales only (still high on itunes), but ig i was proved wrong lol.

musically, i prefer this to 98% of modern country. the guy’s got a great voice so i can’t count him out. i applaud the lyrics about the working-class being overworked and underpaid, even if oliver had some clumsy lines (cough cough fudge rounds). that being said, i don’t really get how this is a “conservative anthem”? am i missing something, or are my left-wing political views making me skeptical of this song’s sudden success?

much rather have this than j*son ald**n anyway

avatar

Piran

4

The overall message is good and it's actually applicable to a lot of the UK's current issues, especially the underpayment of workers along with high taxes and inflation. The "obese milkin' welfare" bit though... 😐

avatar

richard melon 🛖

1

the song itself isn’t really right wing, but the guy behind it is lol

i still really like it though 😳

P

pressy

1

I am worried that him being decried as a right-winger and ostracised could result in him finding his home in that crowd, who are certainly very interested in claiming him. Clearly many of his complaints resonate with working-class folk in the US and here too. As leftists, I feel we have to meet him where he is at. Not everyone who uses right-wing talking points is a fascist who can't be reasoned with. Billy Bragg seemed to understand this when he made his pro-union response song.

I said on the midweek charts page that it's moreso a conservative anthem due to who is listening to it, rather than the content of the song. There is a clear individualist streak running through the song though. I mean, if there wasn't, conservatives wouldn't be interested and no one would know who this guy is. Kinda sad really. In any case, we'll have to keep an eye on where this guy goes from here and how his politics evolves.

Given, however, the fact that the same mechanism that propelled this tune into the upper echelons of the charts also propelled Jason Aldean's song, there is probably reason to be concerned about the greater cultural context, aside from the song or Oliver Anthony himself. So you definitely have good reason to be skeptical. That being said, the unprecedented insignificance of downloads as a form of music consumption contrasted with the influence they have in determining chart positions perhaps makes it look like there's a bigger paradigm shift than there really is. That's not to say that these songs don't do decent numbers on streaming, though.

In lighter news, I did note that country musician Tyler Childers did notch his first ever US chart entry with his song "In Your Love", whose video tells the story of two gay coal miners in the 1950s in Childers' native Kentucky. I think it's often the case that controversy breeds attention. For leftists, the important thing is to reframe the narrative of the culture wars so that working class solidarity straddles lines of race, sexuality, gender identity, etc., while remaining very much aware of the systemic injustices that minority groups face, and appealing to the compassion in all of us to resolve them. Notably, in a video addendum to his traditional fiddle album Long Violent History, whose title track discusses systemic racial injustice, Childers appealed to his white rural listeners to have sympathy with BLM protesters in the face of police brutality. He noted that the very same institutions responsible for the oppression of Black folk, are also responsible for the oppression of many white rural folk who can't seem to get ahead. I think that's the message we have to take forward.

He actually just confirmed he is NOT republican and he hates the fact people are using the song for rallies and stuff 😳

well, there's certainly a lot of people calling him a right-winger. as far as he's concerned though, his politics are "dead center".

I'm really surprised that he had the gall to call out the right-wing media empire and republican politicians for trying to claim him. he also explained the welfare line and, while it doesn't excuse it, I at least understand where he's coming from a little more. honestly he's right to call out the constant division among the working class, and it's clear he deeply cares for his fellow man, even if he can have a clumsy way of expressing it. I thought there was a good chance he would sell out (and he still might), but so far, he is sticking to his principles, and I respect that. I'm interested to see how both conservatives and liberals will respond.

pressy i think you’ve explained this in four paragraphs so much better than i ever would. it seems like a lot of conservatives are listening to country, even if oliver himself is just a centrist like other commenters. and i’ll definitely check out that tyler childers song when i can. hope you have a great week :)

‘Occhi D’Amore’ becomes the first foreign language song to top the chart in over a year. It also makes history as the first song performed in Swedish to reach #1.

Decided to bring back the flag emojis, so hopefully they work! 🤞

I am so happy for Dua Lipa. The fact 'Dance The Night' was the first single from Barbie The Album, they knew this song had so much potential during the build up to The Barbie Movie's release.

I pledged my allegiance to 'Dance The Night' since Day 1, and I even bought the single on CD and cassette. Definitely one of the best Number 1s of the year by far.

Really didn’t expect Florence to get another ACR reset and be back in the Top 40 at all, but absolutely delighted about it!

Also not me thinking Doja Cat’s recent controversy with her fans would cause ‘Paint The Town Red’ to flop. Couldn’t have been more wrong there lol.

Anybody publicity is good publicity, as far as the fans are concerned.

Also, it must take some REAL garbage for Mr. Music to not be last. I mean, he isn't last on my list either, but yeah. Agree with you on the argument that Closer is, quote-unquote, "wack".

‘Bittersweet Goodbye’ is now officially Issey Cross’ highest charting song.

While I definitely prefer ‘Used To This’, it’s still cool to see this doing as well as it is! ❤️

How come MCR made such a big impact here? Not complaining about it though!

avatar

i… kinda got myself a little bit obsessed with them recently. i had a few songs from mcr in my playlist but wanted to branch out… next thing you know, i had finished the black parade album adoring it and checked out their other albums.

welcome to the black parade is def their best, but my favourite would be give em , kid or house of wolves

Awesome that ‘Prada’ is in the Top 20 after only a couple of weeks.

Looks like this could become RAYE’s second big hit of the year and that’s amazing to see! 😊

Speaking of her, ‘The Weekend’ and 'Escapism' rebounded more than I would’ve expected, but I’m all for it!

Congratulations to Dua Lipa on her fourth #1 single! 😁

‘Dance The Night’ may not be among her absolute best hits, but it’s still a really good song nonetheless and I’m happy it got its breakthrough after being blocked last minute by Billie’s cassettes last week.

Can’t wait for the upcoming album next year!
