I was secretly hoping Mr Brightside might sneak into the 40 and and The KLF into the 100. Oh well. Some good stuff doing well this week though, especially Get Out My Head and The Kid Laroi :-D
What on earth was Scott Mills jabbering on about about things being classed as new entries if they’d fallen out of the top 100 and then come back? Clearly not, according to this. And thank god for that!

I know I am a few days late but I was just looking and saw All Girls Are The Same at #53! 3 Years later too :D That's crazy

Honestly, the singles charts should bring back more genres to the charts like in the 90s & 00s.
It's always the boring lo-fi, trappy, tik-tok songs that have made the charts a shadow of its former self.
No wonder the Albums charts is more exciting.

Really can't understand the charts these days. Full of re entries of old songs which get best chart positions than new songs?? Kylie + Dua, an explosive duet, just peaking at 95??? This is joke

Ok my take on today's charts:
'Afterglow' going #2 is overrated so is 'Whoopty' going #3.
2020 hits have returned to the charts after all the Christmas songs were out
I don't know why 'Dance Monkey' is in the charts again, since its so annoying
But overall I like how 2020 hits returned

2

Hmm... I personally disagree on 'Afterglow', 'Whoopty' grew on me & 'Dance Monkey' isn't bad in my opinion, but it's very old now & I completely understand why many people are annoyed by it now! :P

3

Oh do you not like afterglow?

avatar

Piran

1

No, I do like it, haha. :)

They said that 'Afterglow' going up to #2 was overrated, but I don't agree that it is overrated, meaning that I'm happy that it's doing as well as it is!

Thank the radio for that

avatar

Piran

I disagree with radio airplay counting towards the charts anyway, but 'I Hope' being so dominant there certainly didn't help! :P

Thankfully, it still doesn't seem to be getting any UK plays outside of Radio 2, so let's just hope it stays that way, haha.

Come to think of it, I might actually do one of these, as I have more time on my hands than I thought! Anyway, I totally agree with pretty much all of this. I did like Go Crazy and Death Bed, so they would be higher up for me, and No Time To Die is number 1 all day long in my books. Don't Start Now would be a light 7/10 (probably because it's overplayed, not song quality), and Someone You Loved would be higher. But apart from that, a great review!

nice reorderings but i think you made a mistake with i dunno at 76, it’s tion wayne rapping it, not headie one. 😂

where would you be placing roses if occ counted the imanbek remix? i put it at number 10 in my best hit songs of 2020 list based on the remix, which was the popular one. :)

EDIT: just noticed the mistake i pointed out has been fixed. thanks 👍

Piran

2

Yeah, with me reordering an entire Top 100 which took a couple of hours, I'm honestly surprised that there weren't anymore mistakes! :P

I'd probably the rate the remix a solid 8/10, which would put it at around #15 in this reordering.

Thanks for the comment!

Pop Smoke's lyrics might be kind of generic, but his flow & the production he uses are both better than what most of his peers are doing right now!

As for The Jonas Brothers, 'What A Man Gotta Do' just seems really cringey & basic at times, plus the overplay really didn't do it any justice either.

Thanks for the reply! :D

Okay, so instead of my weekly chart review this week (because there was no way I was going to cover everything in one review), here's my reordering for the Chart Of 2020! :D

I'll post this on the EOY Chart page too.

One thing I want to stress is that the ratings for these songs are heavily influenced by personal influence & replay factor. In particular, some of the hits that weren't released in 2020 will get a lower score than the song's quality truly represents!

So, for example, 'All It Want For Christmas Is You' deserves higher than a 8/10, but it's getting knocked down here because it appears in the chart every year & this Christmas wasn't really a situation where I wanted to hear it.

That being said, songs like 'Sunflower' are boosted, because I recall back to memories where I really enjoyed hearing it on the radio & the fact that it has aged really well as a hit. That's why it'll be ranking fairly high in this case!

I'll post the list above shortly, so be prepared for a long post, but either way, it's just my opinion, so please be respectful.

Just to show how much times have changed, when Last Christmas! first hit the charts in 1984, it was still in the top 40 in the first week of February together with Do They Know It's Christmas? (which even went back up the charts at the end of January...)

🎶🎶EVERYTHING IS CHAAAANGIIIING....🎶

avatar

Karl Fursey

And yes, even better in March 1995 when Mariah Carey's festive classic went back up the charts to number 59 after falling out of the 100 in Feb, 95....result....record shops including the legendary but not forgotten Woolworths reducing the single to 10p each and that's what caused that, even in more recent years up to 2007, singles being reduced after Christmas has still counted as sales for the charts and thus have often hanged around alot longer than in the current climate.

Very different times for the charts indeed.

Also, i'm still not over the shock of Woolworths closing LOL!

Yep - the original record was Three Lions going from 1-97, but it's been bettered now

Damm, really wish that song never lost that record.

I know I’m biased, but still.

P

PN

5

I did not listen to the chart because I was busy, but really, really happy for Little Mix. They really deserve another number one.
Not too keen on Bieber getting to number 4, but I can cope.
Blinding Lights really fell back from Sunday - only number 13?
Dance Monkey in the top 40 is no surprise - it was going to happen, let's be honest.
Very good chart overall :)

31 is good. come on

avatar

⁉️

3

Lucid has to be big soon right? I mean it’s so good, even though it’s her worst song, but that’s more of a compliment to her discography as opposed to an insult of the song.

Agree on the other two songs you hate, especially The Business. It’s just so generic and annoying.

Other highlights of this new chart for me were;

1) ‘Evermore’ going back at #1 on the albums chart for a second non-consecutive week! ❤️

2) ‘Afterglow’ climbing to the runner-up position.

3) ‘Get Out My Head’ & ‘Paradise’ both entering the Top 10 (Ireland have really stepped up in terms of EDM lately!).

4) ‘The Business’ finally reaching the Top 40 after being hugely successful all across Europe over the past couple of months.

5) The remix of ‘Goosebumps’ getting a lot more initial traction than the original did (that might be an unpopular opinion though!).

6) The Kid Laroi getting two songs in today’s chart, with ‘Without You’ at the top of my personal charts currently.

avatar

⁉️

6

1: Probably a good thing, but I’d rather have Fine Line or unrealistically Whole Lotta Red.

2: Not a good thing, really boring song in my opinion.

3: Alright in my opinion, those songs aren’t my favourite, but it’s good to see the genre continue doing well on the charts.

4: Not a good thing, probably the worst song I’ve heard this year so far.

5: Alright, I love and hate that song at the same time.

6: Awful thing, why does The Kid LAROI even have a career?

avatar

Piran

4

Okay, so we seem mixed! That's a shame about the last point though, since I really want The Kid Laroi's career to keep taking off like this.

A far cry from the era when every other week it would be something by Spice Girls, All Saints, B*Witched, Honeyz etc... LOL!

avatar

Piran

18

Even without the insane surge in downloads & trending at the start of the week, I knew Little Mix would be getting the #1 today!

Honestly, while I’m very mixed on the group’s music as a whole, I have to give credit where it’s due; ‘Sweet Melody’ is certainly one of their better hits in my opinion & possibly my favourite song from the group overall since ‘Touch’.

More importantly, I hope Jesy sees this & realises just how much she is supported, appreciated & loved by the British public. She could really do with that motivation right now! ❤️

Hey everyone! :)

How are you all doing today?

I hope it’s been a good week for you guys.

5

Hi Piran! Congrats to the new No. 1. Here for 🥊 The Prince Of Pop 🥊 scoring another Top 5 this week with "Anyone". Love the song. Also Lady Gaga and Ariana re entry 😍. Did you see Taylor and Justin were the number two and number four best selling artists in the entire 2010's decade by Nielsen data? Adele was No. 1 but the entire Top 10 is extremely impressive. 🥊

avatar

Piran

4

Hey Marco! :)

Yeah, this chart was crazy in terms of how busy it was, but I feel that the #1 was well deserved.

Regarding 'Anyone', it's only okay for now, but I could see it growing on me & it's way better than how JB started off 2020 for sure!

I didn't look at Neilsen's list, but I'm absolutely not surprise to hear that Adele was #1 & Taylor was #2, haha.

avatar

Marcothedonjuan

3

And congrats to Taylor with the No. 1 album this week in the UK and USA I think it will be.

avatar

Piran

4

Interestingly enough, both of Taylor's 2020 surprise albums have been her only ones to spend multiple weeks at #1 on the UK Albums Chart, so maybe this indie-folk pivot that she's making is working for her over here? ;)

JB

Jack Brooks

3

Evening Piran! 😊

I'm happy with 'Sweet Melody' taking the top spot, it's a deserving #1 for sure but tbh i'm kinda over the song personally, I like it but I haven't listened to it much recently. My favourite songs on the chart at the moment are 'Prisoner' which I was really hoping was going to break into the Top 10 this week and 'Holiday' by Lil Nas X which I only heard for the first time this week but i'd like to see that continue to rise up the charts too.

Also kinda nice to see some Arctic Monkeys songs back in the charts, even if it is only at the very bottom. I wonder what the story is there?

avatar

Piran

3

Hey Jack! :)

I think 'Prisoner' could have a shot at returning to the Top 10 next week though & I actually wouldn't mind Little Mix staying at #1 for a bit either, even though it could be at risk of ACR very soon!

I'm not too sure why Arctic Monkeys re-entered, but then again, we have the winning song from Eurovision 2019 also back in this week, so I'm just as confused on some of the re-entries as you are, haha.

JB

Jack Brooks

3

I guess it could just be do to with the age old story of the post-Christmas lull in sales producing weird results, if only indirectly. If sales are at a rock bottom, it allows random old songs that happened to have been streamed a lot to re-enter in the lower half of the Top 100. Ironically, January can sometimes be a far easier time to get a 'campaign song' on the charts than Christmas Day.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, this is definitely the most unpredictable week of the year, since you can't really tell what people have been listening to outside of the Christmas songs in December, haha. :)

Rector

Well deserved #1
