Awesome seeing 'ily (i love you baby)' debut at #1. I've actually known about this song for a few weeks now, so it's cool to see you love this so much out of nowhere! :D

Incredibly, I have a 'Forza Horizon 4' track atop my chart this week, but you didn't in yours.

I also like 'Rover' entering the Top 5 too!

Hey Jstar, how are you doing buddy? AWESOME news!!!! :)

J

3

I'm doing great, you probably know why lol.

I hope you are well this morning? Well actually in the U.K it would be afternoon now haha.

It is also predicted to debut at number 1 in the U.S also which is fantastic. Also Gaga's album is little over 13hrs of being released in the U.S. She also released a promo single with Blackpink today. I actually haven't heard it yet. I want to save it for the album tomorrow. But it will be a fun week next week.

PS, I was listening to Yummy yesterday, I really don't care how most people feel. I really enjoy the song.

Everything you just said put a huge smile on my face!!! :) I can't wait!!!! TWO of my favorite online CD retailers have sold-out of Chromatica CD's and Target has "Pre-Orders Sold-Out" right now on their website. I just checked these sites again, still sold-out. :) Also, yes...Yummy is my jam. :)

J

Jstar

Yeah you got that Yummy Yum lol. Also in the U.S Intentions has actually done really well. It may not have peaked in the top 5 but it has spent 12 weeks in the top 10 which is amazing.

Something tells me this might be her biggest album since Born This Way which would be really cool. It should have a lot of support the first week. And if Rain on Me continues to be a big hit throughout the summer that will only help it even more.

Justin Bieber has not left the Top 10 of the Hot 100 but for only two weeks since last MAY. Only two weeks he has not been in the Top 10 in over a year now. Since I Don't Care last May. Some people pretend like they don't see it. haha

I adore my Gaga!!! Born This Way is classic at this point. I love everything about Rain On Me. It's borderline iconic already. Her and Ariana look great together. It's a spiritual experience to me. I listen to it like this. haha :)

Yes they have bought a house lol. Well I am continuing my Gaga marathon binge today. I have been listening to all her albums this week. I will finish it off today. If we don't talk later on I hope to see you tomorrow to hopefully celebrate a number 1 debut in the U.K.

Getting to the charts late today, but anyway, letā€™s go. Rockstar clings on for another week despite having no video, somehow Stuck With U and GOOBA stay in the top 10, and we have 12 new entries to have a peek at! So letā€™s get right in, using the same format as last week despite how unreadable it may be, to get past the spam filter.
Letā€™s start with #96 ā€“ ā€œGuysā€ by the 1975, a band who never seem to fail to notch a charting song, and who have seemingly dipped their toes into all manner of genres across the year so far. However, after hearing this Iā€™m definitely gonna be looking forward to 1975 songs charting in the future, because frankly, this is great. Itā€™s a song which is absurdly sappy, completely unashamed to revel in unadulterated emotion, the singer pours his heart out for his fellow bandmates and declares ā€œyou guys are the best things that ever happened to meā€. Itā€™s a beautiful sentiment delivered in a gorgeously soft vocal timbre, and over pillowy instrumentation that includes just a touch of fluttering pianos and string embellishments to create such a warm, enveloping mix. This song hits all the right notes, itā€™s definitely a blissful oasis in these strange times. For me, a decent 7/10. At #95 we have ā€œBad Luckā€ by SL. I have to say I was surprised to hear Kenny Beatsā€™ tag. He does ok here, the beat is very lethargic, just a flute line and a slow knock, but itā€™s dynamic enough not to lose my interest. SL sounds half-asleep to match the beat. I can see how it could kind of work, but overall itā€™s just ok. Decent 5/10.
At #91 we have ā€œFlexā€ by Polo G and Juice WRLD, and yeah, this ainā€™t it. The production here is garbage, itā€™s completely lifeless and stiff, the guitar loop gets annoying, the bass is grating against it, overall it doesnā€™t come together and sounds completely cheap. Juice WRLDā€™s verse would be fine paired with some more organic production with more space in the mix, this completely suffocates him. And Polo G uses the same flow for the verse and chorus and sounds about as stiff as the beat underneath him. This is grating. Bad news, decent 4/10 and thatā€™s being charitable. At #85 we have ā€œTrillionaireā€ by Future and YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and this isnā€™t particularly good either. The production does the bare minimum, some melancholic keys and some bass thatā€™s somewhat suffocated, not much groove here. The main problem is the absence of a good hook to make this more interesting to listen to because without it, this is pretty tedious. Future and YoungBoy have no vocal chemistry and could pretty much switch out for each other. Itā€™s definitely better than ā€œFlexā€ but, pretty much just filler, and not good filler either. Strong 4/10.
At #82 we have ā€œXā€ by the Jonas Brothers and KAROL G. Iā€™m gonna be pretty charitable towards this, because it has a REALLY strong hook. In fact, the whole song, from a songwriting point of view, has pop excellence written all over it, more writing like this and I wonā€™t feel like the Jonas Brothers reunion is so pointless anymore. The KAROL G feature was tasteful, the song has a danceable beat, the ingredients are here, but I canā€™t help but feel like the production ruins this one. Again, as Iā€™ve said for other songs here, it feels lifeless, just a bit too artificial. We need a stronger bass groove here, the brass needs to be better incorporated, the sound isnā€™t enveloping enough, itā€™s not tangible enough. For me, a strong 5/10. Probably with room to grow because the hook is great. One of the best Jonas Brothers reunion songs so far if not the best. At #81, ā€œWillā€ by Joyner Lucas, and Iā€™m gonna assume itā€™s the remix with Will Smith that has this charting, so apologies if thatā€™s wrong. Anyway, Iā€™m seriously surprised by the quality of this. Will Smith spat an amazing verse, it really has to be heard to be believed. He sounds so genuine in everything heā€™s saying, acting as a mentor to Joyner, mentioning how he too had idols, detailing his career so far. He really makes the listener root for him, relish in his successes, every line he delivers flawlessly, he sounds like he really means what heā€™s saying. This isnā€™t just a phoned in verse, he really tried here to deliver something honest and heartfelt and it really worked, and his dynamic flows and vocal delivery are too. The production is standard for a hype anthem, a distorted trap knock that definitely has more bounce than some other songs weā€™re reviewed today. Iā€™m not a big fan of Joyner Lucas, but he only handles the hook so thereā€™s nothing to complain about. For me, a strong 6/10. Good stuff.
At #78: ā€œPlay Dateā€ by Melanie Martinez. Iā€™m gonna be honest and say I have no idea why this song is blowing up now and itā€™s 4 years old! The more important thing though is that itā€™s not at all good. The lullaby-like production isnā€™t as cute as she thinks it is, her heavily autotuned vocals remove all personality from her voice and what personality remains is grating. The lyrics with their analogies to toys are really trite and boring and the sentiment of the song is petty and not in the way you can root for. This is just annoying to listen to. For its competency as a song (itā€™s not an assault on the ears), this is a decent 4/10. But I donā€™t want to hear this ever again and if I do its score will probably plummet further. At #75 we have ā€œSurrenderā€ by Natalie Taylor. This song is 3 years old and all, but I feel like Iā€™ve heard it before so Iā€™m gonna assume this is here courtesy of TikTok. Anyway, Taylorā€™s vocal performance is decent in a pretty standard melancholic song with an ok hook. The production seems quite basic, overall doesnā€™t seem polished enough to really hit. The production is veryā€¦royalty-free, perhaps. Thereā€™s the kernel of a good song here, but for the moment, itā€™s just ok. Light 5/10.
At #65 we have ā€œLose Somebodyā€ by Kygo and OneRepublic, and, well, Iā€™ve made it no secret that Iā€™m about the furthest possible thing from a Kygo fan. However, this is definitely one of his least detestable songs in a while. The piano build up is very tried and true, it works, the hook is pretty strong. However, to my surprise, all this momentum wasnā€™t instantly ruined with a mid-paced drop and distorted vocal snippets all over the place, Kygoā€™s calling card for sucking any and all life out of a song. Instead we get a second verse, and when the drop does come, itā€™s far more tasteful and puts the vocals much more front-and-centre. This reminds me a bit of the heel turn Marshmello recently provided, but a little better. This is inoffensive. Decent 5/10. At #59 we have ā€œSolitairesā€ by Future and Travis Scott, and yeah, not good. The vocals are way too high in the mix for some reason, the beat is grating and just sounds tinny and flat, it compliments neither artist. The hook is garbage, thereā€™s no focus, no structure to the song. This is just a headache. Decent 4/10.
At #43 we have ā€œThink About Thingsā€ by DaĆ°i Freyr. Iā€™ll admit to not being plugged into Eurovision this year, which is rather unlike me, in fact I thought it was cancelled completely. There was still enough hype around the Icelandic song though, one of the favourites, that itā€™s managed to chart. Sadly, however, I donā€™t like it. The production here is so rigid that there really is no groove to this. Itā€™s hard to explain it, but despite the prominence of the bass in the mix, the up-tempo beat just feels so square, and I hate to use the word again but, lifeless. Thereā€™s a cute energy to the song, I like the vocals, I like the progression of the song, I just really think the production here fails spectacularly and completely squanders this songā€™s chances. It doesnā€™t make the song difficult to listen to or anything, it more just makes it completely flat and unevocative. A light 5/10 for me, about as middling as you can get. Finally, we have ā€œDaisiesā€ by Katy Perry at #37, a pretty low debut for her. The song itself is ok, Perryā€™s vocal performance is pretty strong, the production is ok, weā€™ve got a nice touch of guitar and some skittering percussion. The song never really gets off the ground though, thereā€™s no build up to the final chorus which provides a payoff which doesnā€™t feel earned. Itā€™s a song that just doesnā€™t feel like it gets off on the right foot, even if there are elements of it that are fine enough. Itā€™s not offensive though. Decent 5/10 for me.
That leaves me giving best of the week handily to ā€œGuysā€ and worst of the week is ā€œFlexā€, but good god is Melanie Martinez lucky I didnā€™t give it to her. Some real stinkers this week that I hope donā€™t stick around, but some good stuff too. Not a terrible week. Anyway, thanks for reading, have a good one!

Pepperoni Boy,
Thank you so much for ripping Melanie Martinez apart. I actually do not know how that got into the charts. I told the UK to stay far away from her (her voice is HORRIBLE) but no, they will not listen to my words. Itā€™s a bigger shame that Drama Club was her one decent song and that never got in. Itā€™s at #100 on the Amazon Music charts too (???) Letā€™s make sure Play Date tanks. I donā€™t know how that got in the charts.

Fun facts:

- Rockstar increased its sales by 28%, selling 57K this week. Even on SCR, Blinding Lights would still not be #1 for the second week.
- Lewis Capaldi returns to the top of the album charts exactly a year since it debuted. Its seventh stint (not counting consecutive weeks), it sets a new record for a solo male artist to do so and joins Our Version Of Events by Emeli Sande and 21 by Adele.
- Nearly 20,000 sales separate #1 and #2.
- Around 200 sales separate #2 and #3, while another 200 separate #4 and #5.

No, there's a certain theme to these songs.

Absolutely amazing song though, probably a solid 9/10 on first listen!

This is definitely more radio friendly than Stupid Love even though I did like the song, I am hoping for a big debut. But I will contain my excitement until then.

I will be beyond ecstatic though next week as Rain on Me should debut in the top 10 and her album will also be out.

But let me turn my attention to the current charts haha. Rockstar seems it will last a few weeks at number 1. I won't be surprised if it reaches 1 on the hot 100 either. Also i am looking forward to see how In your Eyes does with the new remix.

Hard Rock Hallelujah?

Piran

2

Even then, 'Stupid Love' has been one of the biggest radio hits of 2020 so far over here! I think 'Rain On Me' will also be really dominant on airplay, which means it'll stick around for a while. :)

Yeah, I agree that 'Rockstar' could get a few weeks at #1 in the UK & will go to #1 in the US very soon too (it's already up 8-4 in Simm's predictions, now just 65 points away from the top spot!).

Well we will see, but either way I am glad they collaborated.

What else big happened this week on the U.K charts? I really haven't checked them out yet due to the music video premiere.

That's awesome it's doing big on radio in the UK!! "Stupid Love" also has never dropped out of the Top 40 worldwide in all it's 11 weeks. Some songs stick around without playing out and draw people towards buying the album. Since "Stupid Love" is co-written by Max Martin, I think about some of those late 90's Max Martin songs that weren't huge necessarily on USA radio in particular but were "good faith" (now classic) singles that gravitated people to purchasing the full album. Many of those singles are from albums now Diamond in the USA. Then it's so interesting that "Rain On Me" is co-written by Rami Yacoub who co-produced "...Baby One More Time" : the monster single for Britney. It's just odd how the more things change the more they stay the same. :)

avatar

Piran

2

Not only that, but I think it'll get a big boost in a couple of weeks time, as 'Chromatica' is being released next Friday! :D

It also helps that Ariana is on it to prop up streaming numbers & that the song is absolutely amazing, haha.

avatar

Piran

1

Nothing too big this week really, but 'Say So' returned to its #2 peak which was cool to see! :)

I also expect 'Flowers' & 'Breaking Me' to make the Top 10 over here soon too, both of which are massive dance hits.

Piran

Another correct answer! :)

J

Who sings both of those songs?

Also I was talking to coolocelot101 on the hot 100 article. He is trying to get to 1,000 comments. It has over 940 right now.

'Flowers' is by Nathan Dawe (DJ) featuring Jaykae (rapper), but it samples a 2001 classic by Sweet Female Attitude of the same title, with the original peaking at #2 over here! :)

'Breaking Me' is by Topic (DJ) featuring A7S (singer). That one's been a Top 10 hit in several European countries already.

Yeah, I think with all three of us here, we'll get to 1000 comments on this article tonight!

2013 may be #6 on mine, but I don't deny it was an awesome year and some songs were very good back then too.

2010 did have a few forgettable songs here and there, but it's not as bad as 2011 in my opinion.

Glad Say So managed to get back to #2! Drake needs to toosie slide down the chart.
Dua still stuck under the top 10 makes me sad :/
Great to see Watermelon Sugar returning thanks to the video. Hope it gets a new peak!
Daisies is kinda meh to me. Not really top 10 material imo.

Interesting to see where Rain on Me will land next week!

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (22/05/2020 - 28/05/2020)

Honestly, this weekā€™s been so quieter than recent charts! Iā€™m actually surprised as to how little I have to say about this one, haha. :P

Anyway, itā€™s cool to see ā€˜Rockstarā€™ get a second week at #1, but this shouldnā€™t come as a surprise to anybody! Itā€™s clearly dominant on both Spotify & Apple Music, but while radio & sales arenā€™t on the same level as itā€™s streaming, theyā€™re a lot better than youā€™d expect for these two artists. That being said, Iā€™m looking at how big this is becoming internationally & it might turn into a global hit for at least a few weeks, which is very rare for a trap song, especially heading into the summer!

Was really rooting for ā€˜Say Soā€™ to go all the way though, given how I love both the original & the Nicki Minaj remix! Might even be one of my favourite songs of 2020 at this point.

That said, I also put this songā€™s viral success down to TikTok & itā€™s this streaming service thatā€™s also causing a lot of slow burners on the chart! The thing is, ACR doesnā€™t affect these kind of songs, because they have enough momentum to somehow avoid declining in performance for three consecutive weeks, which is why youā€™ve got songs like ā€˜Death Bedā€™ & ā€˜If The World Was Endingā€™ that probably havenā€™t peaked in chart position just yet. Of course, you could argue these songs are as big as they are now thanks to how much people can relate to them under the current circumstances & Iā€™m not sure exactly how much further theyā€™ll get, but hey, I certainly donā€™t mind them being here!

Iā€™m also loving ā€˜Roverā€™ now breaking into the Top 5! ā€˜Flowersā€™ going Top 10 next week possibly? :)

Outside of that, itā€™s awesome to see ā€˜This Cityā€™ move up in the Top 20! Honestly, this one has been growing on me a lot lately, although I prefer the radio edit (Luca Schreiner) even more than the original! Iā€™m also happy that ā€˜Donā€™t Need Loveā€™ & ā€˜Breaking Meā€™ are there too, although Iā€™ve kind of moved on from the latter song as Iā€™ve known about it for like four months now. Still, if itā€™s going to become the next dance smash, better late than never! Surprised to see ā€˜Boss B**chā€™ as the highest climber of the week, but Iā€™m certainly not complaining. ā€˜Kings & Queensā€™ also hitting a new peak is an even more awesome thing to see!

As for the new entries, theyā€™re both low down & I donā€™t have a ton to say about them, so Iā€™ll blast through both of them quick.

Starting with ā€˜Party Girlā€™... well, I actually donā€™t mind the blend of the fuzzy trap beat over the scattered pianos, even if the latter struggles to ever find any sense of a melody. That being said, Iā€™m not all that impressed by the mixing around the vocals of StaySolidRocky, nor his voice in general sadly! Besides, this kind of content is really starting to get overused in rap songs & besides, I feel that Arizona Zervas did this better in ā€˜Roxanneā€™ (even if that song hasnā€™t aged amazingly well). As for this, not precisely bad, but Iā€™m probably going to forget this exists by the time I post my next review. Light 5/10!

Then weā€™ve got ā€˜Daisiesā€™ by Katy Perry just about sneaking in! Look, for as hard as I can see that Katy Perry is trying to keep her mainstream success going in 2020, itā€™s barely working at best at this point. Iā€™ve seen some critics try to compare this song to ā€˜Roarā€™ (a hit of hers that I still adore to this day) with itā€™s motivational lyrics about getting up after getting knocked off the ground, but that comparison would be more deserving if the production was actually empowering too, which it unfortunately isnā€™t, because we never really get a climax or anything to take away from it thatā€™ll last long-term. I donā€™t even deny that thereā€™s a lot of sincerity in Katyā€™s delivery either, but her vocals can sound really strained at times, especially at the end of each hook & it can sound really uncomfortable at points! Overall. itā€™ll fill pop radio for a while, but donā€™t expect this to stick around for very long at all, so for me, light 6/10.

The last one is ā€˜Secretsā€™ by Regard & Raye! Believe it or not, while weā€™re only at #30, this is actually the highest new entry of the week, thatā€™s it already. Although, it might actually wind up being the best of the three! Donā€™t you just find that Rayeā€™s vocals are just made for slower club jams? Thatā€™s always where sheā€™s sounded the most convincing & it really shows here! She can really capture the paranoia of a guy potentially cheating on her really well, even by sounding trembly at points for added effect. Then again, a big part of that is helped by that funky & polished debut! Shame weā€™re probably not going to get the chance to hear this at clubs & festivals over the summer, but hey, the least we can do is get it up the charts. Iā€™m giving this a solid 8/10 for now!

Wait a minute?! ā€˜Think About Thingsā€™ almost made the Top 40?! Thatā€™s incredible! Iceland really couldā€™ve won Eurovision 2020 if it wasnā€™t cancelled.

As for next week, I imagine The 1975 will edge out Suga of BTS for the #1 album next week! However, despite how big that new Gaga & Ariana collaboration will be, as well as Doja Catā€™s remix of ā€˜In Your Eyesā€™ causing an inevitable boost, I donā€™t see either of them being powerful enough to be a threat to ā€˜Rockstarā€™, but they might end up in the Top 10 at least. Spoiler: Iā€™ll be saying really positive things about both next week!

Thatā€™s it from me! Donā€™t forget the Emoji Challenge coming up shortly.

Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend everyone! :D

Thanks Piran for your comments !!! I really can't understand why such an average song from Iceland is the only one Eurovision song that entered the UK Singles Chart. James Newman's song "My Last Breath" was much much better, and it was my first choice Eurovision song this year. My second preference was a song from my native Poland. I enclose them both for those who don't know them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iS-lV909T4
