My ratings of all the new Top 40 arrivals...
#20: The Weeknd - After Hours (Strong 7/10, Best Of The Week)
#21: BTS - ON (Solid 6/10)
#33: Pop Smoke - Dior (Strong 5/10)
#34: Aitch - Mice (Light 5/10)
#39: 24kGoldn - City Of Angels (Solid 7/10)
#40: Ashe - Moral Of The Story (Solid 4/10, Worst Of The Week)

I agree with your best of the week and worst of the week there Piran!

"Falling" by Harry Styles isn't a new Top 40 arrival. It was here before, as a non-single though. I hope that after Harry's performance of that song at the Brits, and with the quite recently released video, it will enter the Top 10 next week...

"Moral Of the Story" by Ashe may not be a great song, but at least it has quite good lyrics, and the clear message to those women who are unhappy with their marriage after some time. "Talking with my lawyer, she said "Where'd you find this guy?" I said, "Young people fall in love with the wrong people sometimes". Some mistakes get made, that's alright, that's okay. You can think that you're in love, when you're really just in pain." I know quite a number of such women. pS. I feel so sad in regards to what happened to the US rapper Pop Smoke. To those who don't know it yet, he was only 20-years old when he became a victim of the assault brutally murdered in his own house...

I don't deny the lyrics are interesting, but the vocals & production just underwhelmed me so much unfortunately. :/

avatar

Piran

2

Oh yeah, I just remembered it debuted at #29.

The comment's been edited now! :D

Thanks! I did have to change my "Best Of The Week" to 'After Hours' though, since 'Falling' had apparently already debuted.

Great to see - as it should be - 'Blinding Lights' back on top...

BTS only at 100!! That can't be right!! So happy for Joel Corry getting another Top 10 but surprised to see SAM SMITH out of the Top 20 already: great song...

BTS ON is at 21

So we're just going to let 'Stop This Flame' miss the Top 40? Disappointed. :(

avatar

Ireneusz Chmielewski

2

I"m disappointed too that "Stop This Flame" has dropped out, but Celeste will be back for sure with another great song !!!

avatar

Piran

2

Hopefully she's one of those artists where her follow-up single will be bigger! :)

I was very happy seeing blinding light reclaiming the no.1. Wait w.t.f, someone you love is still at top ten

avatar

Piran

Same! 10/10 for me. :)

2

This isn't really a "throwback" at all, but it was easily my favourite song of 2019! :D

me too Piran...love it!

It's so tragic that Avicii died as young as he did. I'm glad Kygo appears to be keeping his legacy living on though! :)

I don't like this one at all, I think this is Avicii's most underwhelming song. I look back at what he did with 'Levels' and 'Wake Me Up' and now to hear a drop so lacking in energy, it's really disappointing.

avatar

Piran

0

To be honest, you can't really blame Avicii for the drop, since he died whilst he was making the song. Even then, it's still a really unique one at that!

Please listen to 'ON' by BTS and the album (Map of the soul 7) which charted Nr1 in the UK this week. The album is musically diverse and lyrically meaningful. I hope more people in the UK will be open to international music, give it a chance.

avatar

Piran

I'm planning to listen to 'ON' a bit later.

I'm hoping it'll be good, since I remember checking out 'Love Yourself: Answer' & that was an amazing album! :)

avatar

Say Chak

1

Excellent I am so glad you enjoyed 'Love Yourself: Answer' I was lucky enough to hear a lot of those songs live at Wembley two days in a row =D !
My favourite songs from Map of the Soul 7 album:
1. My Time (straight up modern RnB)
2. Black Swan (classical music mixed with Hip Hop, check out the Music video for this)
3. URGH and Shadow (rap)
4. Friends (a humorous song about 2 male friends, really wholesome)
5. Filter (latin vibes, but sung in Korean)

'IDOL' & 'Euphoria' was actually both former #1's on my personal chart, in consecutive weeks! :D

'ON' was a solid 6/10 (decent) for me at first listen, but it has potential to grow on me, just like a lot of BTS songs.

avatar

Say Chak

1

'My Time' is by the same singer who sang 'Euphoria'. I can understand that ON takes a few listens before it grows, I am a big fan of BTS but there are several songs that I need to listen to more than once before I fully appriciate =). Idol is epic, but my all time favourite BTS song remains Fake Love, we just have a love affair =).

avatar

Say Chak

1

Oh and if you like IDOL you might like Dionysus from this album, it has a similar genre bending sound.

avatar

Piran

0

That's Jungkook, right? If so, he definitely stands out to me as my favourite member, along with RM for a consistently awesome flow in the songs he's part of! :D

'Fake Love' is very good, but I wouldn't personally put it among my favourite BTS songs! 'DNA' is their first hit that really caught my interest.

avatar

Piran

3

Also have to shout-out 'Roses' for going Top 5 & 'Lonely' for going Top 10.

I love seeing both of these EDM bangers doing well! :D

SH

Scott Harris

I think calling 'Roses' EDM is a bit of a stretch.

I don't know how many Eurovision fans we have here (I'm a massive ESC fan!), but this is our entry for this year...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iS-lV909T4

I like the raw power behind his voice & how strong the lyrics are, but I just wish the production hit a little harder! Overall, still good, but I don't see Europe liking it enough to put it on the left side of the leaderboard unfortunately. For me, a solid 7/10!

I love the ESC...I am still listening to KEIINO from Norway...remember? they are amazing..if you like pop music..they have released so far 7 singles...do hope they will get an album out soon!!

avatar

Piran

3

Of course I remember 'Spirit In The Sky'! :D

I didn't even know KEIINO even had more singles, but I'll certainly check them out. Their "joiking" in that song was very unique!

avatar

Sergej Dordij

2

The UK's entry is decent, I actually enjoy our country's entry (I'm from Germany).

avatar

British entry is OK. Not stunning but I am sure it will get more points than last years entry.

Keiino released yet another song:

OMG you read my mind Ronald!! I discovered yesterday their 7th consecutive singles in less than a year!! Great song: lyrics in Swedish and English...I was expecting their album being released this month but i guess we will have to wait a bit longer!! How are you by the way? Enjoy your week end..It is my birthday on Sunday so i am getting ready to celebrate it...

Strong entry this year... Good luck from Spain!
I agree with you! Great voice and I love the lyrics! I hope better positions for the big 5 this year... specially UK and Spain... we deserve it!

Ireneusz Chmielewski

1

Hi Piran !!! I'm a very big fan of ESC, and the UK's entry this year is really very good !!! I'm afraid though that James Newman will lose reaching only the second place, and that finally the winner of this contest will be from my native Poland. Here's the Polish entry for this year's ESC... pS. Let's make a deal. I will obviously vote for James in May, and you can vote for Alicia... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om91-RjTr8k

Love ESC, though I'm from a South American country, I get involved in the competition fiercely, haha. That's ok for UK but I don't get any potential factor on it. I guess Gina G's Oh Ah...Just a little bit....was the last banger UK got. I still follow Keiino, Eleni Foureira, Mans Zilmerlow, Robin Bergstrom, Loreen, and many others ex contestants

HAPPY BIRTHDAY https://disqus.com/by/thierryhenon/ !!!
I hope you had a great one and celebrated in style.
Finally 21? ;-)
The new KEIINO single is rather good!
Better than the previous one, Colours.
That was not a very good song in my opinion.
Have a great week!

avatar

Piran

1

It's really awesome to see somebody who isn't even from Europe interesting in ESC! :D

I agree with you regarding the UK's entry this year! All of those artists you mentioned are incredible & I remember all of their Eurovision hits.

Regarding Eleni Foureira, I'm still shocked that 'Fuego' came second to 'Toy'!

avatar

Piran

1

Second place is very optimistic for the UK to be honest, but thanks anyway! :D

On first listen, sorry, but this one will have to grow on me! That being said, I loved 'Light Me Up' from 2018... now you guys deserved to win the whole thing with that one.

This is my personal favourite of the ones I've heard at the moment...

I'm really looking forward to your country's entry this year! :D

'La Venda' deserved so much better...

avatar

Piran

I wasn't really into Germany's on first listen to be honest, but I hope it can grow on me.

My favourite so far would have to be Lithuania's, which may also be #1 on my next personal chart! :D

Hi Dami...How are you ? long time no speak...So you are a fan of...KEIINO! Love the band..they have released 6 singles so far: all of them ..just amazing!! They were meant to release their 1st album last month...i don't know what happened..hopefully soon!! have a great week end

thierry henon

Hi Ronald, how are you? long time no speak
I guess like most people, you are working from home too...
BTW, you won't believe it but KEIINO just released another single!!"would i lie"
OMG, 8 singles in a year!! amazing...just wondering when the album will be released then..was meant to be due 2 months ago!! i am not very fond of Vill ha dig"but love the other songs: pure pop genius!!
have a great week end and be safe: take care...

avatar

Hi Thierry,
I'm doing fine! Not working from home, I still go to work Monday to Friday. The students work from home, like most teachers, but management / staff prefers to work at school. There's no total lockdown in the Netherlands so I can still travel to work with public transport.
You always work from home but now you really have to stay inside, am I right? Hope you are fine too. Healthy and safe!
The new KEIINO single is awesome indeed. Really can't wait for the album now!
Have a great Sunday!
Take care of yourself!

While it’s disappointing to see ‘No Time To Die’ drop from #1 so soon, the incredible ‘Blinding Lights’ returning to the top spot for a third non-consecutive week makes up for it entirely!

I’m surprised that ‘Don’t Start Now’ still isn’t on ACR yet, but I’m by no means complaining since it’s such an awesome song.

‘Say So’ finally going Top 20 excites me a lot, since I feel that Doja Cat has a lot of potential as an artist & it’ll get even more of a boost next week thanks to the video!

Nice to see 'Falling' gaining some traction after the BRIT's last week, since I think it's one of Harry's best ballads so far.

While I wasn’t really a big fan of ‘Dior’, I hope Pop Smoke rests in peace!

Finally, I don’t know how to feel about ‘Higher Love’ becoming Whitney Houston’s longest Top 100 single! I mean, I still love it despite all the overplay, but it’s never going to be as iconic as some of her older classics, e.g. ‘I Will Always Love You’ & ‘I Have Nothing’.

Top 40 ratings coming a little later this evening! :)
