The record that stopped me in my tracks from this weeks chart was Sam Smith - To die for. What a powerful record. Superb.

Biggest news on that chart is that Higher Love surpassed I Will Always Love You to bexome Whitney Houston's longest running single EVER on the UK 100 Singles Chart! Instagram @ronniemorrisofficial

I totally agree!

Absolutely, if you check out the oldest Bond;s themes , this has no chance. Tina Turner's Golden Eye is perfect!

Not sure if this was covered in the singles chart article, but apparently, Billie Eilish is the first artist born in the 21st century to have a #1 single in the UK! :O

avatar

Damián

2

Wow!! What an achievement for Billie!

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I definitely think she's going to have big future ahead of her! :D

Now a bit of a throwback from 2013...

I'm really surprised this wasn't much bigger! It peaked at #24, really should've been a #1, since it's so much fun. :)

This song is currently in the Top 20 of the US Billboard Hot 100, but hasn't charted here yet!

Why, exactly? It's too good to sleep on...

You know what, Maren Morris is underrated in general, so if you like this, it might be worth checking out even more of her music! :D

avatar

thierry henon

2

She is indeed underrated! Did you check out the Highwomen? they released their debut album last September..you may not like country music but i love it..she is a part of the band with the amazing Brandi Carlile..Unfortunately country music isn't big in UK..

avatar

Piran

1

I haven't actually, but the name certainly rings a bell! :)

I do love country a lot actually! Yeah, it's a real shame that the genre has died down a lot in the UK over the years. I mean; Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, Dan + Shay & Florida Georgia Line have all charted in the UK Top 40 recently, but not with traditional country songs unfortunately (as they collaborated with artists from other genres).

Really, The Shires are the biggest British country act at the moment as far as I'm aware & even then, they're only really getting albums success, when they should be doing the same on the singles chart too!

avatar

Piran

1

Speaking of Brandi Carlile, did you know that she's been nominated for 11 Grammys & has won five of them? :D

avatar

thierry henon

1

I do agree with you...I have listened to The shires but to be honest i prefer the US singers...I have been a fan of Reba McEntire for quite a while..and of course our Dolly....I like Trisha Yearwood too but just her early releases...READ MY MIND by REba is a must for any country music fan...love it...

avatar

Piran

1

Woah... now those are some cool throwbacks! :D

For me, some of my favourite women in country are LeAnn Rimes & Shania Twain! As for right now, among all country acts, Thomas Rhett & Luke Combs are currently standing out to me a lot.

You might've noticed I'm a massive Taylor Swift fan (I know you're not, it's fine), but for as much as I adore her pop music, I'm going to remember her country songs a lot more!

avatar

thierry henon

1

OMG, how could i forget Shania Twain..dah... COME ON OVER. that is a classic album..pop with country...THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH...one of my favourite single of all time..i mean her album doesn't have a single weak track!! and of course, YOU ARE STILL THE ONE....Love the 90's!..i have noticed indeed that you like TAYLOR SWIFT...i love FEARLESS and her 1st but less known album TAYLOR SWIFT but i so much like her as a country singer.. most people won't agree with me and i do respect that...

avatar

thierry henon

3

i didn't know that..thanks for the info...speaking with women with a VOICE...My favourite female singer of all time is CYNDI LAUPER..you might be too young to know her... but she is an amazing singer...A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is just a faultless album...HEADING WEST: a pop song at its best...slow but so moving...her 2008 album BRING YA TO THE BRINK was a change of musical direction for her but Gosh, it worked so well...

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, being only 21, Cyndi Lauper was definitely a bit before my time, but I'm very familiar with the name itself! :)

I'll try to check out some of those songs you recommended to me though.

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, all classics! :)

Haha, that's right! Awesome, since 'Fearless' is my favourite Taylor Swift album too (making it inevitably my favourite album of all-time too!). :D

I think a lot of earlier fans like myself prefer her country music to her pop music actually! At least the latter is still good & that it gave her huge mainstream success over the past decade.

Even her new album has a country track on it called 'Soon You'll Get Better' with The Dixie Chicks!

It's a very emotional one, as it was written about her mother's recent cancer diagnosis. :(

avatar

Damián

2

Yep, agree on that! Thanks to Kylie"s pop country influenced last album, the genre got a little bit more popular in the UK, but that was 2 yrs now

avatar

Damián

No matter about age, Cyndi's a classic artist every1 should now. I'm 46 and I listen, though not my favorite, to Billie...😂😂

My ratings of all the new Top 40 arrivals...

#1: Billie Eilish - No Time To Die (Strong 9/10, Best Of The Week)
#20: Sam Smith - To Die For (Solid 8/10)
#29: Justin Bieber ft Post Malone & Clever - Forever (Light 5/10, Worst Of The Week) *
#35: B Young - Wine (Light 6/10) *

An * indicates that I've heard the song for the first time today!

Woah... B Young didn't even get "worst of the week", but to be fair, not only is it by far the best song he's done, but it's genuinely not that bad at all!

Sadly, I've come to accept that 'Changes' is definitely my least favourite JB album to date, it's not even close! Like I said though, at least 'Intentions' made the Top 10.

Surprised how much I enjoyed the Sam Smith debut, but I don't think anything will beat 'Dancing With A Stranger' for me as far as songs from them go!

I've probably raved about Billie Eilish enough as it is, haha.

Hey Piran!
Glad that Billie was the new #1!
I'm 50/50 on the debuts, I like "No Time To Die" and "To Die For", but I found "Wine" meh and "Forever" is bad.
And I agree "Changes" is Bieber's worst album.

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Sergej! :)

Yeah, two of the debuts were really awesome for me, but the other two were just alright! I'm glad we're in agreement on the #1 though.

By the way, my new chart is up now: https://crownnote.com/charts/piran-delves/pirans-top-50-1

Surprised to see Tame Impala get so many debuts here. If I remember correctly, they've only ever had one other single on the chart, and it was for a single week at #97.

Still waiting for The Less I Know The Better to make it to the chart though. It's been climbing slowly on the Spotify charts for years, but it still hasn't made it to this one.

One of the worst Bond themes ever and it enters at No1. A dull dreary generic mess.

So pleased for Billie!! Finally she is getting her first and well deserved number 1 single!! It might not be my favourite song of her career but i am extremely happy for her!

avatar

Piran

So thrilled to see Billie Eilish finally secure her first ever #1 single!!!

A lot of the debuts & gains this week are cool to see, although not exactly hyped that B Young is back in the Top 40.

I wish 'Falling' could've got one place higher, just so it could be on the chart show, because it's easily one of Harry's best ballads to date!

Unfortunately, I might have to do a much smaller review tonight, but I hope you're all good anyway. :)

Shame it's such a dour, boring song... Just further proof of how 'streaming' is corrupting the Charts - as 'sheeple' listen to the 'Latest'/'New' material from this weeks/months/years 'hottest' stars, only to discover it's absolute rubbish but by then it's too late because the Charts count it as if it were a sale!

avatar

Piran

3

Firstly, it's just an opinion! Fair enough if you don't like it, but you can't blame the British public for thinking otherwise.

As for the streaming argument, that's not really valid here, since it was #1 on the sales chart too!
