Okay, as promised, here are my Top 100 all-time favourite songs! :)

Remember, this is just my list! Having been born in 1998, there'll be a mix of both iconic throwbacks & more modern chart classics. It's perfectly fine if there are some songs on my list you don't like (in fact, that's what I'm expecting). Also, there are hundreds, possibly even thousands more songs, that deserve to be on this list that aren't.

My point is, you don't have to agree, but please be respectful. If you're nasty to me or anyone else in the replies, you'll be blocked immediately.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this! Also, feel free to discuss some of your favourite songs ever, since I know doing a Top 100 is very tough to compile, haha.

Dear Piran, I've been looking forward to reading your chart comments every week - they are well-written, knowledgable, and tasteful. I am considerably older than you and my own list would contain mostly 20th century songs. Having said that, your list doesn't disappoint. It's well-curated and eclectic. Well done.

This is a really good list! Of course I already knew that 'Love Story' would be the #1 track, but it's really cool to see 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Man In The Mirror' at #2 and #3, as both are really good late 20th century tracks! I also really love that 'Closer' makes the Top 5, and that 'Mr. Brightside' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' make your Top 10! I really like 'Uptown Funk', 'Wonderwall', 'Chasing Cars', 'Castle On The Hill', 'Shed A Light', 'Without Me', 'The A Team' and 'Don't Stop Me Now' (my favourite Queen track) all make the upper half of your list, but some of my favourites on your entire list come in the bottom half. My favourite track on this entire list is 'Waves (Robin Schulz Remix)', closely followed by 'Señorita'. I also really like 'Wake Me Up', 'Without You', 'I Gotta Feeling', 'Lego House', 'It Ain't Me', 'The Real Slim Shady' and 'Africa' in the bottom half!
As you already know, my Favourite Songs of All Time list is on CrownNote, and I just recently updated it, so I'd love if you could check that out when you get the chance! https://crownnote.com/charts/gameskiller01/my-favourite-songs-of-all-time

Hey Gameskiller! Glad you like it as much as you do. :)

I know your list consists of a lot more recent pop & rap (particularly grime in the latter case), so I wasn't sure how you'd feel about the 80s & 90s classics here, but I'm really pleased you're positive on them too!

Yeah. 'Love Story' is #1 by a considerable margin as you know, but at the same time, I don't see my Top 3 moving for a good while yet! 'Closer' being as high as it is surprised a lot of people when I posted this over on Billboard a couple of weeks back, but it's got all the factors a song needs to qualify for this list; brings back good memories, massive replay factor & just a song that makes me happy straight away! I know 'Mr Brightside' being an all-time favourite songs list might be a bit cliched, but when the whole vibe of the song is as nostalgic as it is, no wonder it's still appearing in the OCC charts to this day! :D

Outside of the Top 10, I think we agree that 'Uptown Funk' feels like it could've been as big as it was even back in the 1970s, despite being released in 2014! Even the harshest critics can't get enough of this. ;)

Something else I should mention is that 'Body' & 'SOS' are looking likely to enter the all-time list before the end of the year (when I'll probably next update this). I'm planning to post my current Top 100 over on Crown Note so that our fellow chart-followers who don't have Disqus can also see it.

I'll comment on how your list currently stands a bit later! Just getting back to everyone's messages over the past few days, haha.

You're doing an absolutely great job, Piran! I've been following the UK charts since I was a child (I have complete handwritten records from 1973 and I still keep records today) and I'm not one of those who say that music was great then and is bad now. I think there are mainly two reasons that older people stick to the songs of their era: One is obvious - nostalgia - it is the recollection of these songs that bring back valuable memories of our youth. The other reason is more complicated: in the 20th century, there were only a few ways to listen: you either heard it on the radio or you bought it in physical form. Therefore, there was a limited number of songs that we were listening to: those that we could afford to buy and the ones on the radio's playlists. As a result, we really, really listened to these songs, dozens of times. Sometimes, hundreds of times. Every note, every word in the lyrics was as familiar to us as the voice of our mothers. Now, with all these options available, like streaming, etc, we can listen to any song that is out. Personally, I listen to all the pop hits, plus all the Indie and Alt. Rock new acts that I can find, plus all the new stuff by the Classic Rock & R&B acts. However, there are so many of them, I usually get to listen to them once or twice, maybe half a dozen times for the really good ones. This is not enough to really bond with a song, to make it a part of my life memories. There are maybe 20 or 30 21st centurry songs that are part of my "best of" list (Seven Nation Army, Mad World, Crazy, Crazy In Love, Stan, Lose Yourself, Mr. Brightside, All Of Me, Beneath Your Beautiful, Uptown Funk, Umbrella, Bad Romance, and a few others) - but compared to the 2000+ songs of the 20th century that would fight for a place on my list...

Thanks Ronald! :)

Piran

That's amazing to hear! :D

I feel like I'm going to be saying the exact same thing as this by the time we get to like 2040 or something, haha.

I definitely agree with you regarding the nostalgia point though! While it's a big part of determining which songs would be so high up in my list, a majority of these songs are from last decade, since that's the era where I really started getting a love for music!

Either way, I think we all know that a good majority of chart hits today were somewhat inspired by something from the 20th century.

Amazing that Whitney's 'Higher Love' even though didn't make it to no.1 UK due too Ed's 'London' overrated dominance, 'Higher Love' has continued to become the most played radio airplay song on British radio for a fifth non-consecutive week. Too add Higher Love has still remained in the UK top5 / top10 for ten weeks thus so far.

I dont think radio airplay charting is something to be proud of really, it just means more djs playing on national and local radio meaning it should be outperforming other tracks as it is getting heard by far more people than other tracks. Staying in the higher echelons of the chart is most definitely a great achievement though, especially in these times

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

It looks like that bold prediction I made a few weeks ago came true after all, as ‘Dance Monkey’ becomes Tones & I’s first #1 single! It racked up 50,000 chart sales for the week, which included 5.1 million streams.

She also becomes the first Australian act to have a #1 song in this country since Iggy Azalea featured on ‘Problem’ by Ariana Grande back in July 2014!

Internationally, ‘Dance Monkey’ becomes the longest #1 of the millenium by an Australian artist in Ireland & she should also set the all-time record for a homegrown act back in her native Australia tomorrow morning! It has now reached the chart summit in over 16 countries in total.

‘Higher Love’ by Kygo & Whitney Houston remains the most played song on British radio for a fifth non-consecutive week.

‘Take Me Back To London’ might’ve been moved to ACR this week, but it does dominate the national YouTube chart for a fifth week running! It does, however, lose 8% of its weekly views at 2.61 million.

D-BLOCK EUROPE FT DAVE - PLAYING FOR KEEPS (#21)
Hmm… I think you can all imagine my reaction when I heard the news of this collaboration! See, since the start, I’ve put Dave up there among the grime artists I respect the most, so to see him working with a group where I’ve given none of their previous four charting entries a passable score… well, I honestly didn’t know what to expect at this point! However, I’ll say this, this is probably the best thing D-Block Europe have done yet, if only barely. For the first time, I’m actually starting to see the slightest of artistic evolution from both Young Adz & Dirtbike LB, as both head into more complex flows despite still being slathered in auto-tune. Let’s be honest though, the only reason that this was their only album track to debut this week was because of the Dave feature, who sounds more engaged in what he’s talking about, despite only being featured artist! If it weren’t for the occasional squawks, this might have actually had potential. As it is, eh, it’s tolerable & that’s the first time I can say that about a D-Block Europe song. I’m thinking a light 5/10, but if you think this is going to interest me in checking out an album that’s 28 tracks long where the video for this song alone lasts nearly ten minutes, not a chance!

RITON & OLIVER HELDENS FT VULA - TURN ME ON (#37)
Despite having no EDM #1s so far this year, we’ve had three songs peak in the runner-up spot in 2019 now & lots of dance songs have been doing particularly well on downloads lately, with this being the latest of them! This is another example of where the song being sampled mixes with the modern dancefloor trends rather well! In this case, it successfully interpolates Yazoo’s ‘Don’t Go’ by 1982, although by the time the infectious synths have fully kicked in, you also get the feeling that the song also has much more of a modern club vibe to it, with the prominent bass beat creeping it at just the right time! Credit to Vula as well for her anthemic vocals, although she seems to have burned out by the time we get to the bridge. That said, a slightly underwhelming finish doesn’t put me off liking a song that’s very well executed elsewhere! As such, I’m giving this a solid 8/10!

ED SHEERAN FT CAMILA CABELLO & CARDI B - SOUTH OF THE BORDER (#40)
I must’ve missed something this week; I knew there was an official video on the way for this since the last chart posted (implying it would be the next official single), but I didn’t expect this much of a boost for this. That said, while I’m amazed it’s debut this late on, the bigger surprise is why it didn’t debut much sooner, since this is easily among the best tracks from ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’! I was always intrigued to hear more of Ed’s Latin side since ‘Barcelona’ from ‘÷’, but I always thought what that song needed was a female guest verse, so Camila being here on ‘South Of The Border’ makes up for that entirely! You can tell immediately that Ed & her had so much fun writing this thanks to the friendly chemistry that they between one another vocally. The sparkly chimes in the production allow that flirtatious atmosphere to increase even more, but it’s unfortunately disrupted by Cardi B’s verse! Yeah, her flow is considerably better than average, but it just feels out of place compared to the other two artists. Overall though, I still love this! It really should’ve been huge over the summer, but hey, it was still worth the wait for it to chart here now! For me, light 9/10!

On the albums chart, ‘Abbey Road’ by The Beatles is back at #1 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its initial release! It sets a new Official Chart record as the album with the longest gap between #1 stints, with 49 years & 252 days (it was last at the top spot on the week of 31st January 1970!). The previous record was also held the Fab Four themselves!

The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Why Me? Why Not.’ by Liam Gallagher (1-2), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (7-3), ‘PTSD’ by D-Block Europe (debuts at #4) & ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’ by Post Malone (3-5).

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Nice To Meet Ya’ by Niall Horan, ‘Highest In The Room’ by Travis Scott, ‘10,000 Hours’ by Dan + Shay ft Justin Bieber, ‘Cry For Me’ by Camila Cabello, ‘Cat Pack’ by AJ Tracey & maybe even more.

Finally, since a couple of people were curious to see it last week, I’ll be posting my Top 100 favourite songs of all-time a little later today.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! It's cool to see 'Dance Monkey' go to #1 this week, and I think it'll probably be staying there for quite some time given the dominance it has on all platforms right now! It's also cool to see 'Ride It' climbing to #2, and it's incredible to see 'Ladbroke Grove' reaching a new peak of #3 on its 12th week as a Top 10 single, and 31st as a Top 100 entry, somehow managing to evade ACR for this long! The rebound for 'Circles' to #6 is great, if unexpected, and 'Bruises' re-entering the Top 40 at a new peak of #11 2.5 years after its initial release now that it's finally been released as a proper single is extremely impressive! Seeing 'Outnumbered', 'Be Honest', 'God Is A Dancer' and 'Liar' all climb to new peaks is great as well.
As for the debuts this week, it was quite mixed for me. I agree with you that 'Playing For Keeps' is the best thing D-Block Europe have done, though that is almost entirely because of Dave's (criminally short) feature on the track. That said, it's far from Dave's best verse either, so this is probably a solid-strong 6/10 for me; very high for a D-Block Europe track, but very low for a Dave track. 'Turn Me On' is pretty similar for me, not a bad track but somewhat repetitive for me, so a solid 6/10 here, while of course 'South of the Border' is easily the best debut of the week. It was initially cut out from being the #7 track on the week of 'No.6 Collaborations Project's impact, so it's great to see it finally able to reach the Top 40! Solid 10/10 here from me!
Next week it seems like 'HIGHEST IN THE ROOM' will, surprisingly, be having a massive debut, currently #1 on Spotify and #3 on Apple Music. Despite the fact that Travis has the most weeks at #1 so far this year on my personal charts, and that he's tied for the most #1s this year, this definitely won't be Travis' 1st entry as a primary lead artist for me. It looks like it will be another quiet week for debuts other than that, though, as I can only really see 'Playing Games' and maybe '10,000 Hours' debuting lower down. At least we should see some more climbs for 'Outnumbered' and 'Liar'!
