Missed chanced for "Higher Love" at no.1 due to that darn Ed Sheeran's "London". Still how strategically planned those "London" remixes is release early this week as Whitney's "Higher Love" would've been no. 1 today.

But for Whitney to reach highest peak at #2 since 20 years ago with "My Love Is Your Love" hit #2 is great.

With Ed Sheeran at 1 now, this could likely be "Higher Love" highest charting and missed chance at 1 this week.
Its an unfortunate timing situation with the "London" remixes released, but it is what it is!

August 30, this same date, Steve Winwood's original of "Higher Love" hit no.1 on Billboard Hot100 in 1986, an iconic significant moment if Whitney's "Higher Love" had hit no.1 UK on this very same day!

I'd be gutted if 'Higher Love' got blocked by 'Take Me Back To London' only because of the latter's remixes, but at least Whitney's got her highest charting hit of the 21st century so far! :)

Hey Whitney's still number 1 in the sales chart, where it really matters

If 'Higher Love' had hit no.1 UK, this would've been one of most biggest talked about thing everywhere among news, music industry insighters, tv entertainment news outlets. Whitney has been dragged through the mud and back by media worldwide with all the drama within the last 20 years. So that feat alone at no.1 would have overshadowed even Ed's "London" going no.1 today. And this could have been her only chance getting a 5th no.1 UK single, so this is little sad disappointment for me and probably others who was routing for 'Higher Love' to hit the UK top spot today. Ed's releasing of these 'London' remixes blocked it unfortunately. But Whitney earning a UK #1 this century would've been a major surprise feat as appose to earning a highest charting within the UK top 5 in the 21st century!

And just noticed...LIZZO: both of her singles are climbing in the chart!! Yuppee!! Surprised ZARA LARSSON and KATY PERRY'S new singles are not higher in the chart!! Shame really!! and again the amazing RITA ORA is stuck at 25 this week!! Guess she won't make it anytime soon to the top 20!!

avatar

I can imagine you are happy with Lizzy climbing up the charts! I am surprised that Sam Smith is still in the top 10, love the song but did not expect it to become a rather big hit for him.

Amazed to see the newest Katy Perry single isfound lower in the chart than her previous single. I like both singles but hoped her new single would climb higer.

Ed is now at #1.... why??? ;-)

I've never been to the Algarve, just Lisbon and Porto. I am a big city person. Love the weather though in Lisbon. Only been there in Summer, can be a bit hot but I love it still. But it is getting crowded, too many tourists... Good thing is I've been going to Lisbon for 6 years now so I do not have to go to the tourist attractions anymore... Love the food there and Portuguese wine....

Nelly Furtado is Canadian but from Portuguese parents.

Enjoy your Tuesday!

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

Thanks to a remix from Jaykae, Aitch & Sir Spyro, along with an official video, ‘Take Me Back To London’ by Ed Sheeran ft Stormzy becomes the brand new #1 single in the country! All versions combined accumulated to 67,000 chart sales, including 10.6 million streams.

Following ‘I Don’t Care’ & ‘Beautiful People’, Ed Sheeran now has three #1 singles from his latest album. He’s only the second Brit (after Calvin Harris) & fifth artist overall (after Drake, Ariana & JB) to achieve this accomplishment this decade.

Despite being placed on ACR this week, ‘Senorita’ does return to #1 on the national airplay chart for a sixth non-consecutive week. Meanwhile, 'Higher Love' leads the sales chart for a third week in a row.

‘Old Town Road [Remix]’ by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus continues its streak on YouTube with a 19th week at #1 in Britain! It’s coming to an end soon though, as it falls another 10.6% in weekly views to 2.68 million.

TAYLOR SWIFT - THE MAN (#21)
At this point, it’s just common knowledge that ‘Lover’ being released would be a highlight of the 2019 musical calendar for me & if you want to see what I rated each track, just check the albums chart article on the OCC’s main website. As for this, it seemed to be a clear fan favourite from the start, but I don’t think I’d put it among the best cuts from the album. It’s still a clever track though; mentioning some of the struggles she’s faced as a woman in the music industry & suggesting how things might be different if she was a man, instead of pointing the finger & outright accusing them. It’s an anthem that promotes gender-equality well without giving fenimism a bad name either (since some feminist anthems can end up being highly controversial, like ‘The Boy Does Nothing’ by Alesha Dixon, for example). It’s also effective how Taylor sells this kind of song fine enough; sounding somewhat bothered & frustrated, but not angry or aggressive. I do feel the production elements clash a bit more than I would’ve liked, particularly the horns in the post-chorus being too tinny & blaring to work for me. Still, this has all the elements it needs to become a success on pop radio & overall, I’ll be rooting for it. Solid 7/10 for now!

TAYLOR SWIFT - CRUEL SUMMER (#27)
This though, despite coming early on, undoubtedly one of the best moments on the album! The first thing that stands out here is how much more effective she tackles her past personal drama, since she’s stabilised into a pop song that she can rightfully call her own, while also showing much more maturity than whenever she tried to be dark or edgy about her previous issues on ‘Reputation’. However, make no mistake, 2016 was a terrible summer for Taylor between the Kim & Kanye drama, her mental health & worries over her public image, but how her “lover” Joe Alwyn helped her get through all of that, which not only shows how grateful she is for this relationship, but the level of maturity she’s showing compared to her last album. That’s before we get into Taylor’s performance herself & while her vocal layering over Jack Antonoff’s blocky pulses did have to grow on me, other features like the reverberating synths in the verses, the striking hook & the jaw-dropping growls in the bridge truly indicate that this needs to be pushed as a single as soon as possible. I went into this album with a critical perspective, but when the tracks can get this incredible, there’s nothing really to analyse, but everything to enjoy. By now, you probably all know what’s coming… another 10/10!

LAUV & ANNE-MARIE - LONELY (#33)
I’ve always found it weird how ‘I Like Me Better’ became a global smash but did nothing in this country, while almost all of his other singles have been the other way round. I guess the Anne-Marie co-lead credit certainly helped matters here too & while I like this, I want to be on board with it a little more than I am. Sure, Lauv & Anne-Marie sound more in their comfort zones, there’s decent chemistry & harmony between them, even the finger snapping & twinkly production is layered over their voices well, but… there’s still something missing to this. Then, after just a couple more listens, I knew that it was the hook. I do like how it gets the balance of being upbeat & cautious, but it runs into the same issue that ‘I’m So Tired…’ did in the sense that it’s perhaps a bit too repetitive & that it makes the song rather predictable while also not leaving an impression that last in your mind for very long. I mean, it’s pleasant, but this could’ve been a lot better. As such, light 7/10!

TONES & I - DANCE MONKEY (#40)
Yeah, I remember saying this a couple of weeks ago, but I knew this was going to hit the UK airwaves after it skyrocketed up the world charts throughout August & I really do think this’ll be massive over here as we come out of the summer. Maybe I’ve become less wild about this since the vocals haven’t really stuck with me (although they do remind me a lot of ALMA’s), but almost everything else about this sticks with you in a positive way. Despite the fun instrumentation, Tones & I sounds somewhat irritated but not in an off-putting way, as she discusses her struggles of busking & how people will ask her to perform again & again, just like animals would in a circus, which actually brings a really sad message to the song when you dig a little deeper. Not only is there that sense of maturity, but I also really dig how the production evolves with the song, starting with a thumping if stable piano line in the first verse, then you get a groovy bass when the hook comes around, but the later stages of the song just go wild & explore more bombastic features. This honestly has serious potential & while it’s already gone to #1 in a few other countries, don’t be surprised if it manages to do the same here. I’m thinking a light 8/10!

On the albums chart, ‘Lover’ becomes Taylor Swift’s fourth #1! She now has more #1 albums this decade than any other female artist. It debuts with 53,000 combined chart sales (24,000 physical copies, 11,000 downloads, 27 million track streams).

The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ by Ed Sheeran (1-2), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (2-3), ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ by Billie Eilish (5-4) & ‘Music X Ride’ by Headie One (debuts at #5).

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Ride It’ by Regard, ‘Pan-Fried’ by Kano ft Kojo Funds, 'My One' by Wiley ft Tory Lanez, Kranium & Dappy, ‘Circles’ by Post Malone & maybe even more.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! I honestly really like seeing 'Take Me Back to London' go to #1 this week, both because of the original and the remixes! For me, the regular remix is pretty decent, but still not as good as the original. It's the Sir Spyro remix that really does it for me - his beat really improves the track a lot for me! I think a version of the song with the original vocals over Sir Spyro's beat would be the perfect version of the track for me. I really like that climb for 'Post Malone' as well, and it's great that Taylor breaks records by becoming the only female artist with 4 #1 albums in the 2010s this week!
As for the debuts, I like that 'The Man' and 'Cruel Summer' are the 2 'Lover' debuts, as they were my 2nd & 3rd favourite tracks from the album! For the former I'd probably give it a strong 7/10 for now, while the latter would be a solid 7/10. My favourite track on the album, 'Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince', would be a light - solid 8/10 for me. I also love that 'f**k, i'm lonely' finally made the Top 40 this week! As you know, it's been bouncing around just under the Top 10 on my charts for a few weeks, and finally entered the region this week. Strong 8/10 from me, though I do agree that the hook can be a bit repetitive. I only recently heard 'Dance Monkey' for the first time, but I'd probably give it a light 7/10 for now. Overall then, a very positive week for debuts!
Next week it looks like it'll be between 'Take Me Back to London' and 'Higher Love', though probably a closer battle than this week's. Hopefully 'Higher Love' can reach #1 at some point, whether that be next week or in the weeks after, but I'd also love to see 'Take Me Back to London' get a couple more weeks at #1. 'Circles' will most likely be the highest debut ahead of 'Hollywood's Bleeding' next week, and hopefully it can reach the Top 10 and give Post his 3rd Top 10 from the album before it even releases (or 4th, if 'Sunflower' is on the album)! 'Ride It' also looks likely to debut, and I think 'Pan-Fried' and 'Jacques' have decent chances as well.

Hi piran
I love seeing take me back to London at number 1! Ed sheeran actually has 8 number ones now. I've been following his career for a few years but n6 collabs is my favourite album of his. And even stormzy didn't even have any number ones at the start of this year and now he has 2. Higher love really should go to number 1 bc it's so catchy, amazing and fits perfect in the genres of pop and dance as well as being a great tribute to the iconic whitney Houston. I was happy that it made a new peak at number 2 but I hope it goes higher. I actually like taylors new songs in the top 40. The man and cruel summer are defiantly good tunes that I might even listen to again. I think it's great that me!, you need to calm down and the archer had their success before the album was released so more tunes could enter the top 40 without the three track limit. I hope "my one" manages to enter the top 40. Surprised ava max torn didn't chart as ava has had really good success recently, although torn did go in the top 40 in downloads.
Have a good week

On the topic of "F!ck, I'm Lonely", I have to take consideration the other 13 Reasons Why-soundtrack songs and how it compares with them.

So I am a big fan of the show itself. Especially the first season, which was an awesome piece of televison! While I think the second season was kinda not good, and I'm hearing the same stories for the third season which I'm yet to see, I Still watch it thanks to the first season, as well as the soundtracks which are always a big plus in the show! :)

Starting with the first season, which had really good songs by Selena Gomez ("Only You"), as well as then-mostly-unknown Billie Eilish ("Bored"). But especially Lord Huron's "The Night We Met". I mean, it is a clear 10/10 from me. I could go as far as to say it's among my favorite songs during this later decade!!!

Then we got to the second season, which ironically, while dropping in overall quality, pretty much continued to shine with its music, maybe even got better! We had Selena continue with an awesome "Back To You", which was among my favorite songs on last year's Year-End chart; Billie Eilish and Khalid's "Lovely" (a clear 10/10 from me!); OneRepublic and Logic's "Start Again", as well as Years & Years' "Sanctify".

Now we're at S3 Era, and I have to admit, I am so far least impressed of these three so far, in terms of musical quality at least! Don't get me wrong, "F!ck, I'm Lonely" isn't a bad Song by any means. However I was expecting to be blown away by it, which just didn't happen, unfortunately! :(

Since then, 5 Seconds Of Summer's "Teeth" has also been released as a single. It is better but not among the band's best work.

Thankfully I have heard Daya's "Keeping It In The Dark" as well, and that Song might even be good! :)

Hey Tony! How you doing? :)

As far as I'm aware, Ed Sheeran just tied Calvin Harris as the act with the most #1 singles this decade, both with eight each. I can't think of any other artist who have been able to achieve more since 2010.

I do think Taylor having weaker singles compared to the deeper album cuts gave her an advantage with the new chart rules, since she's now been able to chart six songs from 'Lover' in the UK. All three songs in the chart from her today were good, but the title track & 'Cruel Summer' were the two standouts from the album for me!

I think like with 'Sweet But Psycho' & 'So Am I', Ava Max's new single will need time to grow on the radio before it makes the Top 40! 'My One' was just one spot beneath the region this week, so it has a really good shot at entering next week, especially since on-demand streaming seems to be its strongest metric at the moment.

Thanks for your reply. I hope you have a good week too!

Hey Gameskiller! :)

For me, the original version of 'Take Me Back To London' has awesome chemistry between Ed & Stormzy, as well as both of them being able to ride the slower trap beat rather well. Unfortunately, the contributions from Aitch & Jaykae didn't blend well with the other two artists, while the grime input that Sir Spyro made resulted in some messy vocal layering. Overall, I certainly don't mind 'Take Me Back To London' going to #1, but I'll admit that I'm going to be annoyed if this means 'Higher Love' can't get there.

I'm really happy for the gain that 'Post Malone' is making too, since it would've been a massive climber on my Crown Note chart if it weren't for 'Lover'! As I mentioned to you earlier, while we actually had similar ratings for 'The Man', I knew 'Cruel Summer' was going to be way higher for me, since that was the album track that stuck in my mind the quickest. While Taylor did drop back considerably from the 86k that 'Reputation' debuted with to the 53k that 'Lover' managed, I do feel like she'll get at least another #1 album, especially with this being the album that's given her the most success in the way of streaming so far.

While 'Dance Monkey' might be just good for me if nothing exceptional, I genuinely have a gut feeling that it'll become at least a Top 10 here & this is a bold prediction, but probably a future #1 too!

Also, not necessarily related to the charts, but did you hear about the rumours that Aitch was shot dead earlier this week? Despite me not being a massive fan of his music, I'm really glad that these rumours weren't true.

'London' has peaked at 1, so seeing it remain more weeks at 1 what's the use, Ed has already had record ground breaking success with the album and practically all singles released so far. His label is trying to milk every dollar they can off his album and singles, which explains why 'London' remixes was issued earlier this week. As i said before had 'Higher Love' been at top spot this week, Whitney's name and the song no.1 peak would've been one of the most talked about topics in news & entertainment everywhere, definitely in the USA and likely also in Europe. It would be talked about now if 'Higher Love' was the no.1 UK song right now!
Ed's label knew Whitney's 'Higher Love' was likely going to hit no.1 this week. So they issued those remixes out real quick likely knowing 'London' would take off and jump as no.1 song on UK Singles,,and it worked. Could've easily waited and release remixes this up coming Monday. A sociable friend works for a major USA label and says this is what the big labels do!

Hi piran
Calvin harris actually has 10 number ones. His most recent was promises. I won't be surprised if my one doesn't enter the top 40 although I'm hoping it does. I've heard ava maxs torn, on the radio before and it's defiantly a lot different from her previous singles, but a good difference. Lastly, higher love looks like it's going to 10 weeks soon so could it be in danger of ACR?

I mean, multiple weeks at #1 is of course always going to be better than a single week at #1, and I still love to see it stay at #1 for a bit longer, just as I'm sure you'd love to see 'Higher Love' at #1 for multiple weeks and wouldn't think it was pointless. Which of course is completely fine as everyone's going to be rooting for a different song at #1 based on which songs they like the most.
The remixes being released this week could've been a move by the label, but honestly I don't think anyone could've predicted 'Take Me Back to London' going to #1 before they saw Friday & Saturday's streaming figures at least. Jaykae is still a relatively unknown artist and Aitch may be blowing up right now but he's still not on the level of Ed or Stormzy, so the fact that these remixes actually did so well is pretty surprising. Besides, if 'Señorita' hadn't been placed on ACR this week it would've been at #2, so it still would've prevented 'Higher Love' from going to #1 if the 'Take Me Back to London' remixes hadn't been released if it wasn't on ACR. Plus, 'Higher Love' still has a very real chance of reaching #1 in the coming weeks, so it should be a pretty exciting chart to watch!

avatar

I was actually referring to how many artists each have had in the 2010s, since 'Dance Wiv Me' went to #1 in 2008 & 'I'm Not Alone' got there in 2009, meaning that he achieved eight this decade. Meanwhile, all of Ed's #1 singles have happened in this decade.

'Higher Love' would be on its 10th week on the chart next week, but since it's been gaining in overall performance recently as far as I'm aware, it wouldn't be going on ACR for at least another three weeks.

1

Yeah, I do agree that Jaykae & Aitch don't really blend all that well with Ed & Stormzy, but I do actually think that Jaykae & Aitch blend really well with each other and I really liked it when they were rapping back to back! Incredibly, 'Take Me Back to London' managed to climb again on the most recent Spotify chart, now 166,422 streams ahead of 'Señorita' and 249,048 ahead of 'Higher Love', so it might actually be another easy victory for 'Take Me Back to London' next week which I definitely wouldn't have expected. It was 18,852 chart sales ahead of 'Higher Love' this week, but it might even manage to beat that next week! I do still hope 'Higher Love' can reach #1 eventually though, as it would be great to see Whitney get a posthumous #1 hit, and this is quite possibly her last chance at it.
I really hope 'Post Malone' can reach the Top 10 eventually, because the track's really been growing on me, despite the fact that I already liked it quite a bit when I first heard it. It should be climbing on my next chart! Speaking of Post Malone, the artist has been making some waves on Spotify recently. Both 'Sunflower' and 'Better Now' passed 1bn streams in the past week, making Post now tied in 1st as the artist with the most 1bn+ songs as a lead artist; both him and Ed have 4. Bieber has 3, but he also has another 3 as a featured artist. 'beerbongs & bentleys' also became just the 2nd album on the platform to have every single one of its songs pass 100m streams not too long ago, and it just passed 'x' to become the 2nd most streamed album, both behind '÷'. 'x' has 6.47bn streams, 'beerbongs & bentleys' has 6.50bn and '÷' has 8.04bn.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Taylor will get at least 1 more #1 album here, though I think 'Lover' getting the most streaming success for her has a lot to do with the fact that it was released simultaneously on streaming services, unlike 'reputation'. Still, I can see her next album doing well on streaming as well.
That is definitely bold predicting that 'Dance Monkey' will go to #1! I'm not sure if it'll manage to go that far, but I do definitely think it'll climb, and I guess we'll just have to wait and see if it'll go to #1!
I hadn't heard those rumours about Aitch actually, but I'm very glad they weren't true as well. I may not be the biggest fan of his music either, but I wouldn't want anyone to be shot dead, especially not someone completely innocent of any crimes like Aitch.

I've honestly already forgot about Aitch's & Jaykae's parts already, but hey, it's cool that you liked the remix as much as the original! :)

Speaking of 'Take Me Back To London', it finally ended 'Old Town Road's over four month reign on the YouTube chart! The video for the remix opened with 4.22 million views, which has to be one of the biggest debuts of the year so far! Regarding its position on the official chart, while nothing will challenge it for #1 as you mentioned, 'Taste [Make It Shake]' might rebound significantly as it went back to #1 on Apple Music, fell 3-4 on YouTube but gained in views, while also being almost tied with '3 Nights' on Spotify. Maybe Aitch appearing on the 'Take Me Back To London' remixed helped his own current hit to get more recognition. Yeah, well even rappers like XXXTENTACION who were bad people who made bad music still don't deserve that to happen to them, nobody does. The fact that Aitch is only 19 would've made it so much worse, but yeah, glad he's okay after all!

That's awesome for Post Malone, especially with a new album coming out in just five days from now! I wouldn't be surprised if he passes Ed Sheeran for most 1 bill.+ streamed songs on Spotify as a lead artist, since 'Psycho' is Post Malone's next nearest song to the milestone with 912 mill., while other than his songs that crossed 1 bill., I didn't see any other songs from Ed inside the all-time Top 100. This was as of two days ago by the way. Finally, it appears that 'Cold Water' recently became the first song on Spotify to pass 1 bill. streams without being on any album! :D

Regarding 'Dance Monkey', it's a combination of gut instinct & how fast it's becoming across the world! It also hit #1 on Ireland on Friday & there haven't been many songs that have got there without doing so in the UK. For example, the last song to go to #1 in Ireland without reaching the Top 10 in the UK was 'Cry For Help' by Hometown in April 2015! Since then, the other Irish but not British #1s have been; 'Can't Feel My Face' (August 2015), 'Cheap Thrills' (April 2016), 'This is What You Came For' (May 2016), 'Galway Girl' (March 2017), 'IDGAF' (January 2018), 'No Tears Left To Cry' (April 2018) & 'Hold Me While You Wait' (May 2019). So as you can see, it doesn't happen often that we get songs hit the top in Ireland without doing the same here. Besides, all of these were Top 5s in our country anyway, with a majority of them peaking at #2 in the OCC charts. Really goes to show how similar the two countries' charts are! :O

It moved from 40-31 today! :D

Now that UK radio are finally starting to discover this, I expect this kind of gains to continue for a little while yet.
