Now that Bad guy by Billie Eilish got caught by ACR it falls back behind Someone you Loved by Lewis Capaldi and Old Town Road (Lil Nas X). So they are back in the same order than 2 weeks ago.

Hey, what do you mean by ACR? :)

Accelerated Chart Ratio:
New releases will have a streaming to sales ratio of 150:1 (or as otherwise amended by the CSC) applied for the combining of chart eligible transactions. This ratio will be known as Standard Chart Ratio (SCR)
After 3 consecutive weeks of decline a stream to sale ratio of 300:1 (or as otherwise amended by the CSC) can be applied. This is also known as Accelerated Chart Ratio (ACR)

Nice explanation, but a record needs to be 10 weeks old before it can be considered for ACR by looking at the previous 3 weeks to see if there is a consecutive decline trend.

Just a minor correction: the streaming ratios of 150:1 and 300:1 for ACR no longer apply. Since YouTube got added to the chart in mid-2018, if a stream comes from a paid service (Apple Music, Spotify Premium, etc.) it's on a streaming ratio of 100:1, and if it comes from a free service (YouTube, Spotify Free, etc.) it's on a streaming ratio of 600:1. ACR makes them 200:1 for paid and 1200:1 for free.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

‘I Don’t Care’ by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber remains at #1 on the singles chart for a seventh consecutive week, tying ‘Someone You Loved’ by Lewis Capaldi as the longest #1 of 2019 so far. This week, ‘I Don’t Care’ is ahead of its closest rival by 8,500 combined sales.

‘I Don’t Care’ also remains at #1 on the radio airplay chart for a fourth non-consecutive week.

It’s 10 weeks at #1 for ‘Old Town Road [Remix]’ by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus on the national YouTube chart. It loses 9.9% of its weekly views to 3.86 million.

SHAWN MENDES & CAMILA CABELLO - SENORITA (#2)
So if you’ve regularly been following my OCC reviews, you might know that I’ve really been rooting for these two artists since they had their breakthroughs around 2015. Shawn might’ve not got it right everytime by being mostly predictable, but he always had potential & Camila is already one of my favourite artists of the decade, so I was definitely excited to see them collaborate again… but my goodness, while I thought ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ was underrated, ‘Senorita’ just blasts past that in terms of quality completely! I guess the biggest attraction of the song is Shawn & Camila themselves, who while might not being the best vocalists still have a ton of chemistry between each other, as well as the harmonies being completely on point (even if Camila did outshine Shawn a bit in my opinion). That said, I have to give credit to the songwriting courtesy of Clean Bandit & Charli XCX, as well as Benny Blanco & Cashmere Cat going out of their comfort zones to give a Latin vibe to this song which works so well with these two artists! I could go on about what I love in this song, but all I need to say is that it screams Song Of The Summer 2019 already after just a few days of hearing it! Only the second song to do this since I started these weekly posts two years ago, but yeah, an easy 10/10 here!

STORMZY - CROWN (#5)
I think with Stormzy having a Glastonbury headline slot tonight & his streaming numbers always being impressive, I feel like we can say that Stormzy is definitely one of the biggest rappers in the UK currently, maybe even up there among the most successful male artists right now! That said, looking at his discography so far, he’s totally deserving of that & this song highlights why… to an extent. See, I love the the piano-driven instrumentation behind this, as well as the seven-piece choir alongside him, but as for Stormzy himself, well he totally sings with passion & I don’t even think his vocals are bad either, but they just feel a little monotonous at times, that’s all. I mean, I appreciate this more soulful sound that Stormzy is going for & it’s good, but he’s really at his best when he brings that intense rapping & energy to the table. This does remind me of ‘Blinded By Your Grace Pt.2’ at times, so for that, I’m giving this a solid 7/10!

JAY1 - MOCKING IT (#19)
‘Your Mrs’ was definitely one of those songs that had to grow on me, so I thought this probably would’ve done the same… & then I realised it doesn’t even need to, because this is actually okay on first listen! I think the beat is what I really like about this song, especially the blend of a drippy beat & the handclaps. Although, while Jay1 might not be bringing anything extraordinary or revolutionary here, I do think his flow is certainly an improvement here. Yes, the lyrics are totally predictable, but at least Jay1 has the right attitude to pull this bragging vibe off without sounding annoying or aggressive, so I can at least respect that. As such, this is getting a light 6/10 from me & like most UK urban music, it’ll probably go up in the coming weeks.

BUGZY MALONE FT AITCH - KILOS (#20)
Based on how chart trends have gone this past year or two, it’s not surprising at all to see a song like this get some hype, although I’m really not sure where I fall on it as a whole. On one hand, I can totally get behind the Latin American influences here, especially in the flamenco guitar thanks to Swiftabeatz, while both Bugzy Malone & Aitch give better than expected deliveries here. It’s just a shame that the lyrics are absoutely terrible, with both artists bringing out a really cocky feel that kind of kills the whole track a little for me, especially when they seem to be portraying the role of drug dealers. That lowers this to a 5/10 for me, but really, this should’ve been so much better!

LIL NAS X - PANINI (#25)
Even before hearing Lil Nas X’s debut EP, I already heard positive praise towards him for embracing a variety of genres & with this one, he’s left the country of ‘Old Town Road’ behind & gone full trap here. Yet, despite his being only being his second charting song, he seems to have a better flow & a more interesting melody in his delivery than most rappers who have multiple hits in the UK. The hook really seems to stick with me despite us only getting two of those on a song that lasts about 1:53 in total! He also seems to take on a more complex flow than I was expecting here & I’m also a bit of a sucker for that whistle line that opens & closes the song. It does need a remix of some kind to really get me into this, but it’s at least got the foundations of becoming a song that I want to come back to. For that, light 7/10!

RUSS & DIGGA D - MR SHEEEN (#28)
Again, when a UK grime song gets a remix, it generally allows the song to grow on me considerably, which is why I ended up tolerating ‘Gun Lean’ more than expected. That said, I can’t say the same will be happening with this song, at all! While Digga D brings a flow that I’ll have forgotten within the next hour, Russ tries to copy the same performance that he brought on ‘Keisha & Becky’; a song which was mediocre at best sadly. I would at least give some support to the guitar melody, but it’s pushed so far back in the mix & seems ridiculous distorted that it doesn’t stand out as much as I wanted it to. Again, there was definitely an idea that could’ve worked here, but unfortunately, this could never implement anything that I’ll be remotely interested in. Light 4/10!

NICKI MINAJ - MEGATRON (#34)
Ugh… look, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Nicki Minaj, especially earlier in the decade, but she’s been testing my patience with her music recently & this song really doesn’t help matters. I know it’s not meant to be one that you’re meant to take seriously, especially with content about the antics she gets up to while drinking, but while her using autotune in previous songs never really bothered me, it really bugs me here. Maybe it’s the basic rhymes & the main production line has definitely has a groove to it, but can’t really develop into anything more interesting. So yeah, I’ll still check out that new album, this song doesn’t give me high hopes for it. It just leaves me with no desire to come back to this, so for now, it’s a 3/10.

MARK RONSON FT CAMILA CABELLO - FIND U AGAIN (#37)
Woah… Camila had a good week then! Okay, I know this making the Top 40 was actually down to Mark Ronson’s album release, but it’s a good end to this week’s new arrivals! Mark has always had a knack for these disco-pop vibes, but despite the laid-back summery feel, the lyrics actually seem to describe a relationship that’s falling apart by one’s mistakes & Camila seems to capture that emotion perfectly with her vocals. I know she sounds a little breathy at times, but there’s no denying the powerful & meaningfulness in her singing. I could definitely see this being one of those songs that connects with a lot of people, as well as being a promising early summery anthem & that’s not a combination that’s easy to nail by any means. I’m thinking a solid 8/10 for this!

On the albums chart, Lewis Capaldi returns to #1 with ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ (3-1). It’s its fifth non-consecutive week at the top of the chart.

The rest of the Top 5: ‘Lexicon’ by Will Young (debuts at #2), ‘Western Stars’ by Bruce Springsteen (1-3), ‘Late Night Feelings’ by Mark Ronson (debuts at #4), ‘False Alarm’ by Two Door Cinema Club (debuts at #5).

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Beautiful People’ by Ed Sheeran ft Khalid, ‘Castles’ by Freya Ridings, ‘Ritual’ by Tiesto, Jonas Blue & Rita Ora, ‘Don’t Check On Me’ by Chris Brown ft Justin Bieber & Ink, ‘I Could Get Used To This’ by Becky Hill & Weiss, ‘Higher Love’ by Kygo & Whitney Houston, ‘Hate Me’ by Ellie Goulding & Juice WRLD, maybe even more.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend! :)

Hey Piran! This Top 5 could just be my favourite Top 5 I can remember, and definitely my favourite from 2019, though I never thought I'd be saying that I was disappointed to see Ed Sheeran at #1 haha! Still, a #2 debut is really good for 'Señorita', and it still could reach #1 in the future. I also really love the 8-4 climb for 'Cross Me' as one of my Top 5 favourite songs of the year so far. I do find it really cool that, out of the 14 artists in the Top 10 this week, 9 of them also have at least 1 other simultaneous Top 40 hit! The only ones that don't are Bieber, Chance, PnB Rock, Chris Brown & Aloe Blacc, and Bieber & Chris Brown are the only 2 of those who are lead artists.
Overall, the debuts were pretty good this week for me! 'Señorita' is of course fantastic and my favourite debut of the week, with a light-solid 10/10 for now! In fact, it's currently #44 on my All Time chart with a 97/100! I also really like 'Crown', probably a strong 8/10 from me. I enjoyed 'Mocking It' so I'd give it a light 7/10, but sadly I can't quite say the same for 'Kilos'. I didn't dislike it, but it didn't really live up to some of Bugzy's previous stuff for me, so a light 6/10 from me. 'Panini' is a solid 7/10, while 'Mr Sheeen' is only a light 5/10 and 'MEGATRON' is a light 6/10. With 'Find U Again' it goes back up, probably a strong 8/10 - light 9/10 there!
Next week it definitely looks like 'I Don't Care' will be getting an 8th week at #1, since it's now ahead of 'Señorita' again on iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, but I would be surprised if 'Señorita' falls any further than #3. 'Beautiful People' will easily be the biggest debut, and, since 'Vossi Bop' is set to go onto ACR next week, I can easily see Ed with 3 Top 5 hits next week. If I were going to predict the Top 5 for next week I'd probably go with:

1) 'I Don't Care'
2) 'Señorita'
3) 'Beautiful People'
4) 'Crown'
5) 'Cross Me'

Other than 'Beautiful People' it doesn't really look like there'll be any huge debuts, but I'd say that 'Don't Check On Me', 'Higher Love', 'Hate Me' and 'Ritual' all have a chance of debuting lower down!

Hey Gameskiller! :D

Yeah, the Top 5 was what really caught my attention this week! Unfortunately, I still couldn't find out when the last time multiple artists had two simultaneous Top 5 hits.

See, I would agree with your Top 5 predictions if 'Vossi Bop' did go recurrent, but I honestly don't think it will. On the Friday, it shot back up to #2 on Spotify with 523,088 (just 872 streams behind 'I Don't Care!), while being discounted on iTunes to back up to the Top 10, as well as remaining in the Top 5 on iTunes, along with likely YouTube boosts given how well its trending. All of these are of course due to the coverage of his headline slot at Glastonbury!

That makes me think the Top 5 will end up like this...
#1: I Don't Care (=)
#2: Vossi Bop (+1)
#3: Senorita (-1)
#4: Crown (+1)
#5: Cross Me (-1) / Beautiful People (debut)

I think we agree on most of the debuts this week which is cool, except you seem to tolerate 'Megatron' way more than I do, haha!

I imagine 2 artists both having 2 simultaneous Top 5 hits must've happened before, but it definitely can't be very common if neither of us can find the last time it happened!
I definitely think 'Vossi Bop' will be increasing in all metrics this coming week as well, but the problem is that it's fallen in chart sales for the last 3 weeks and, unless it managed to climb in streams while still falling in chart sales for 1 of those weeks, I'm pretty sure that means it's on ACR. As far as my understanding of the rules goes, it could even make a 50% increase in performance this week, but since it started the week being calculated on ACR it will still be on ACR for that week, and then get taken off the very next week because of the massive increase. If I'm wrong, though, then I would definitely agree with your Top 5 predictions, other than maybe swapping 'Beautiful People' and 'Crown'.
Yeah, I wasn't a massive fan of 'MEGATRON', but I didn't hate it at least haha!

By the way, since we're on the subject of Ed, his next single will be out this coming Friday.
It's 'Blow' with Bruno Mars & Chris Stapleton! I feel like it might not even debut in two charts from now if the current three singles do well enough, but 'Cross Me' might be low enough for it to pass it by then. We'll see.

avatar

Foxes

1

Ed's really putting out those singles at a breakneck pace! 'I Don't Care' was released with its music video being released a week later, then 'Cross Me' was released just a week after that, then there was a 4-week break before the 'Cross Me' video came out, then just a week after that 'Beautiful People' was released with its video, then just 1 week later again 'Blow' is being released! If 'Blow' does manage to outperform 'Cross Me', Ed will've had 4 Top 10s before the album even comes out! Then, if album tracks perform better than the singles, he could have a total of 7 Top 10s from the album as soon as it impacts the chart! Bit of a sneaky way to try circumvent the 3 track limitation there, especially since singles released in the future could get him even more Top 10s from the album.

avatar

Piran

1

Haha, yeah, it seems like Ed is doing something every Friday! I agree that it is a very sneaky way to overcome the three tracks rule, because Ed knew he wasn't going to an "album bomb" in the UK anymore. I actually think it's clever though, especially since he was mainly the reason that this new rule was implemented in the first place when '÷' came out. I don't think if his nine songs in the Top 10 had happened, this capping at three songs would've existed.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I'd have thought Post Malone & Ariana Grande could've both done it, but apparently not.
With 'Megatron', it's honestly one of the worst singles I've heard from Nicki Minaj, which is a really disappointing sign for that next album.
Oh, so you're saying that you think it fell in combined sales for the past three weeks, so it'll be on ACR in the upcoming chart no matter what happens? I always thought that if that was the case, it would've gone ACR in the current chart instead. Then again, I have misunderstood this rule before, so don't take my word for it, haha!

avatar

Foxes

2

Yeah, over the past 3 weeks 'Vossi Bop' has gone 45,962 - 42,010 - 41,300, so it's fallen in chart sales, though it could've still slightly increased in overall streams on 1 of those weeks. I think whether or not a song is on ACR is assigned at the start of each week so that they can have the right figures for the midweek updates, so if a song has fallen for 3 consecutive weeks it's not until the next week that ACR actually takes effect. The same goes for if a song increases by 50% in 1 week - it's not until the next week that ACR gets taken off, which is why we sometimes see songs jump up the chart the week after they have a massive increase in performance. If that is correct it won't matter that 'Vossi Bop' will most likely increase in performance, since it's already been assigned to ACR for this week.

avatar

Piran

1

Ah fair enough, I guess we'll see where 'Vossi Bop' will be tomorrow in the chart update then. It's still doing well enough across all metric that it'll probably be in the Top 10 regardless.
So what you're saying is it'll be on ACR for the upcoming chart, but possibly not the one after? We all that song will get a boost for next week, but I'm not sure if it'll be as much as 50%.
Haha, the OCC sure know make the UK charts the most confusing to follow, at least compared to other countries! :P
