You Need To Calm Down is the worst song ever. This song should be banned. I hate it a lot

UK Top 40 Singles Chart, 21 June 2019

Piran
My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
‘I Don’t Care’ by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber rules the singles chart for a sixth consecutive week. It also remains the most downloaded song across the country.
‘I Don’t Care’ is also back at #1 on the radio airplay chart for a third non-consecutive week.
‘Old Town Road [Remix]’ by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus is #1 on the national YouTube chart for a ninth week overall! It gained 1.4% in weekly views to 4.28 million.
TAYLOR SWIFT - YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN (#5)
I feel like there’s always a part of me that’ll be very pleased seeing Taylor get the highest debut of the week & her 10th Top 5 hit! It’s going to make me even happier knowing the song is good & surprise surprise, I think it is! I’m not sure this kind of vocal delivery though, which her upper range sounding notably weaker than before, but her melodies are certainly more interesting, especially in the verses. The dreamy, underlying beat is what really makes this classic Taylor though, along with the fact that she’s supporting others. In this song, she dedicates most of the song to speaking against internet trolls who’ll pit female popstars together & her saying that they’re all successful regardless, but she also gives a shoutout to the LGBTQ+ community as well as which I’m sure is & will be very highly respected. Also, not related to the song itself, but wasn’t the video awesome? I’m so glad her & Katy are finally friends again after years of feuds. Anyway, a lot of Taylor’s early album singles have faded on me rather fast, but I don’t see this doing the same thankfully. For now, it’s a light 8/10!
LITTLE MIX - BOUNCE BACK (#10)
I really want to support Little Mix for doing their own thing now that they’ve split from Syco, but every come back single they’ve released since then seems to be even more disappointing & sadly, ‘Bounce Back’ continues that trend. So let’s start the vocals & while I don’t deny the girls can still bring powerful vocals to the table (especially Perrie), the band members don’t harmonise as well as before & their occasionally breathy delivery doesn’t really do them any justice. As for the Soul II Soul sample, it honestly could’ve worked & you can tell they’re trying hard to combine the 90s R&B/dance feel & current pop trends, but it sounds like a much cheaper version with those handclaps. I don’t deny that the girls’ attitude have always usually won me over, but this really lacks the sparkle that I know they’re capable of. Solid 5/10 here, sorry!
DRAKE FT RICK ROSS - MONEY IN THE GRAVE (#13)
So because The Raptors won the NBA Championship last week, Drake dropped two new singles supposedly to celebrate their win. However, neither give any references to basketball nor their title win. Anyway, that’s probably why these songs would have a little bit less streaming than you would expect. That said, I certainly see the appeal to this one! This is arguably one of Drake’s more creative flows & I like how he’s calling out people who feed off rappers’ images after they die, explaining that he’d rather have his money buried with him so that others can’t take it from him. Then we get to Rick Ross; okay, he does ramp up the tension a bit here rather well, but it’s honestly not that easy to understand what he’s saying in his deeper tones. The production also has a really dark feel to it at all, probably because of the bass that’s placed rather well among the trap mix. So yeah, I’m actually happy that this is being pushed as an official single, but it’s certainly decent on first listen. Very strong 6/10!
DRAKE - OMERTA (#33)
Now we move on to this one, which I’ve heard was just a track where Drake didn’t really try & it’s the less likely of the two to become a hit… unfortunately, I can kind of see why people think that. I can sort of appreciate Drake taking on a different style of flow than usual, but the knocking trap beat & warbling backing harmonies really don’t do him any justice in production that supports him. As for the content, there’s not really much going on here. On the surface, it’s just Drake bragging about how he’s overcome to odds to become successful (which is probably the closest this comes relating to his team winning) but the title seems to suggest that he likens to the Mafia by staying silent in practice to illegal or unlawful activities. Overall, just like with a majority of songs Drake puts out, it’s not bad, but that doesn’t mean I won't forget about it very soon. Light 5/10.
On the albums chart, ‘Western Stars’ becomes Bruce Sringsteen’s 11th #1 album!
With a debut of over 45,400 copies between CD & vinyl sales, it posts the biggest opening week of physical sales in 2019 so far. It was also 25,000 combined sales ahead of its nearest competitor.
The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Madame X’ by Madonna (debuts at #2), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (1-3), ‘Doom Days’ by Bastille (debuts at #4) & ‘Unknown Pleasures’ by Joy Division (re-enters at #5).
Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Señorita’ by Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello, ‘All Night’ by BTS & Juice WRLD, ‘Crown’ by Stormzy, ‘Megatron’ by Nicki Minaj, ‘Rodeo’ by Lil Nas X ft Cardi B, ‘Center’ by Gerry Cinnamon, ‘Find U Again’ by Mark Ronson ft Camila Cabello, ‘Mocking It’ by Jay1, ‘Be Someone’ by Camelphat & Jake Bugg, ‘Phnoe Down’ by Stefflon Don & Lil Baby, ‘Rescue Me’ by OneRepublic, ‘Kilos’ by Bugzy Malone ft Aitch, ‘Time Waits For No One’ by Freddie Mercury, 'Pop Out' by Polo G ft Lil Tjay, 'Gucci Demon' by B Young & maybe even more.
Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! I do like seeing 'I Don't Care' spend a 6th week at #1, especially with the knowledge that it still would've been there even if all things were fair and 'Old Town Road' wasn't on ACR. In fact, if it and 'Someone You Loved' weren't on ACR we would've had an entirely static Top 5 for the 3rd week running! I think the singles market has really found the songs it likes the most at the moment. 'Cross Me' would've also spent a 4th consecutive week at #9 if not for ACR, though I do like that it climbs to #8 this week. I really like the climbs for 'No Guidance', 'Wish You Well', 'Mad Love', 'One Touch' and especially 'Ladbroke Grove', and the re-entry for 'Summer Days'!
As for the debuts, it was quite mixed for me this week. 'You Need To Calm Down' wasn't anything special for me, though I did appreciate the message. Based off the 2 songs we've gotten so far from Taylor's upcoming album, I think I'll actually prefer 'reputation'. Anyway, this was only a light 6/10 for me. 'Bounce Back' was only a bit better with a light 7/10, and, while I did expect for 'Money In The Grave' to get a Top 10 debut, it's still my favourite debut of the week with a solid 8/10 for now, with the potential to climb. 'Omertà' was the exact opposite, being my least favourite debut of the week with a solid 5/10. I'm pretty sure both of those tracks were recorded before The Raptors won the NBA Championship and were going to be released anyway, which is why they make no mention of it. The Raptors winning probably just meant that they got released a week or two earlier.
Next week it definitely looks like 'Señorita' will be making a big debut which I absolutely love. It's #1 and still climbing on iTunes at the moment, and while I'm sure it won't be as big as that on streaming, it could still end up with a Top 10 debut or at least Top 20. Either way, it definitely looks certain to be Camila's highest debut ever, since her only Top 40 debut before has been at #40 with 'She Loves Control', despite having 7 Top 40 hits. (EDIT: #1 on iTunes, #6 on Spotify and #14 on Apple Music; a Top 10 debut is definitely on the table!). 'Crown' will probably end up as the highest debut (EDIT: though now that the 1st day figures are all in it'll probably be close between it and 'Señorita'), and 'Mocking It', 'Be Someone', 'Canter' and 'MEGATRON' all look like they have good chances at making it as well. 'Find U Again' might finally climb into the Top 40 as well, with both 'Señorita' and 'Late Night Feelings' potentially boosting its performance!
Ireneusz Chmielewski
Dear Piran !!! Joy Division's album "Unknown Pleasures" didn't debut on the UK Albums Chart today, but re-entered the chart after almost 40 years since its debut. That album was the first album of Joy Division originally released in 1979, but it appeared on the chart for the first time at #71 a year later, after a huge success of their second album "Closer" that charted within the Top 10 on the albums chart in 1980. pS. I'm very glad that the album "Unknown Pleasures" has finally appeared within the Top 10, as the band's leader Ian Curtis was undoubtedly the great artist, but I have no idea what was the reason behind it. If You know, please let us all know...
Phil James McNulty
There was a campaign around 40 years since the original release, particularly in Manchester.
Seems that it worked
Ireneusz Chmielewski
Indeed the album has been re-released to mark its 40th anniversary...
Piran
Hey Ireneusz! :)
Thanks for pointing that out! I actually had no idea about that, since when Scott Mills said on the Radio 1 chart show that the album was a new entry at #5, I assumed it was an album of new content, hence why I initially put "debuted".
The reason behind its sudden resurgence is because it got re-released for its 40th anniversary & apparently there was a campaign to get it to #1 too.
Piran
Hey Gameskiller! Sorry I missed this comment of yours back on Friday.
I do feel the start of the summer is a slow time for new music, but things got very interesting last Friday with the new releases we got. In the chart update, outside of 'I Don't Care' set to spend a 7th week at #1 & tie 'Someone You Loved' for the longest chart leader of 2019 so far, both 'Senorita' & 'Crown' are set to debut in the Top 5. The former coming in at #2 would easily be the highest debuting song for both Shawn & Camila (my gut instinct is saying this'll be a future #1!), while the latter will give Stormzy two Top 5s in the same week, while he'll also get a boost next week thanks to his headline slot on the main stage at Glastonbury on the Friday night!
I feel like our thoughts on the debuts aren't too surprising really. I was always going to rate Taylor's track higher, haha, but I didn't expect you to like the Little Mix one as much as you did.
Foxes
I would absolutely love if 'Señorita' could go to #1, and I agree that there definitely is the potential there! Not only is it a fantastic track, but it just keeps climbing! It's still #1 on iTunes, though 'I Don't Care' is getting quite close again now, on Spotify it's gone 6-6-2 so far, and on Apple Music it's gone 14-5-2! It's also dominating YouTube, with over 70m views so far after 3 days. , at this rate it may even manage a #1 debut this week!
I also really like that Stormzy's set for 2 Top 5s with 'Vossi Bop' and a Top 5 debut for 'Crown', as I really like both tracks. And, yeah, his Glastonbury headline slot should definitely help those 2 tracks next week (though 'Vossi Bop' would be eligible for ACR that week if its streams had fallen in the 3 weeks prior). I also really like that 'Cross Me' is set to climb into the Top 5, not only because it'll allow both Ed & Stormzy to have 2 songs in the Top 5 each (when was the last time this happened with 2 different artists?), but also because 'Cross Me' is definitely my favourite of the 2 'No. 6' tracks we've heard so far, and probably in my Top 5 songs of the year so far.
I'm liking that 'Mocking It', 'Panini' (which may be getting a remix with Gordon Ramsay, if https://urlzs.com/dy9gk with 625k likes actually leads to anything) and 'Kilos' are all set to debut in the Top 40, but really I'm mostly interested in the Top 5 this week!
Piran
It seems like #2 at least is guaranteed then, but it's only 2,500 combined sales behind 'I Don't Care' even now & with those streaming gains (along with the fact that it'll finally give us a new #1 on YouTube), I agree that it could very well still debut at #1 on the overall chart & I'll be doing all I can to help that in happening! ;)
A lot of Camila's songs, especially her biggest hits, have a habit of peaking in performance a few weeks or even at least a couple of months after initial release. I guess 'Senorita' definitely makes up for the fact that 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' wasn't even to crack the Top 40.
'Panini's could be getting a remix with Gordon Ramsay?! I wonder how that'll go down on the radio, haha.
I'll keep looking regarding your question, but I can't find anything recent from the archives yet. That said, I believe Ed & Stormzy would become the third & fourth artists to have two songs in the Top 5 in the same week in 2019, since I know Ariana's done it & I'm fairly sure Lewis has too.
Foxes
Yeah, all of Camila's hits, at least here, have started small and then gone on to be much bigger. 'Havana' debuted at #53 and then reached #1 on its 13th week on the chart, and 'Never Be The Same' debuted at #46 before peaking at #7 on its 6th week. 'Señorita' definitely looks like it wants to buck that trend, though! It may still grow in the coming weeks, but it definitely isn't starting small!
Gordon could just be joking with that tweet, but I would definitely love to hear what a Gordon Ramsay remix of 'Panini' would sound like!
I think Ed & Stormzy would actually be the 4th and 5th to do it this year, since both Ariana and Lewis did it, Ariana with 'break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored' and '7 rings' for 4 consecutive weeks and Lewis with 'Someone You Loved' and 'Hold Me While You Wait' for 2 non-consecutive weeks, but Post Malone has done it as well. 'Sunflower' and 'Wow.' spent 3 consecutive weeks in the Top 5 together in the very first 3 weeks of the year.
Piran
Update: 'Senorita' finally passed 'I Don't Care' on yesterday's Spotify chart (423,339 vs 414,545). It's also about 5% ahead on sales & a lot more stable now, with massive YouTube trending. I think the only thing it's behind on now is Apple Music, but it's still gaining fast there! :D
I still think it's too close to call at the moment, but I have a good gut instinct it'll be #1 on Friday.
Foxes
Yeah, if 'Señorita' keeps gaining at the rate it has been, it definitely has a good chance of debuting at #1 on Friday. Even if it can't quite make it, I think it'll probably reach #1 the week after anyway! It'll probably stay at #1 until 'No. 6 Collaborations Project' releases, and then of course Ed will go back to #1, either with 'I Don't Care' or another track from the album.
Piran
It also broke the record for highest daily Spotify streams for a male-female duet... then broke it's own record for the past three days! :D
I do think it'll be 'Senorita' vs 'I Don't Care' for Song Of The Summer. The former has an advantage due to the time it was released, while the latter will be boosted by an album release.
By the way, did you hear that Camila split with her boyfriend after 18 months? I guess after the 'Senorita' video was released, I'm not too surprised.
