My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as alwaysā¦
- Despite not being #1 on the Official Chart Update, āI Donāt Careā by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber narrowly leads the singles chart for a fifth consecutive week (1,553 combined sales ahead of āOld Town Roadā).
- āOld Town Roadā by Lil Nas X has now been at #2 for the past seven weeks! Even though it was the most streamed track of the week with 8.8 million plays, āI Donāt Careā remained the most downloaded song over the past seven days.
- āHold Me While You Waitā by Lewis Capaldi soars to #1 on the national airplay chart for the first time.
- āOld Town Road [Remix]ā by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus spends its eighth week in total at #1 on Britainās YouTube chart, although it loses 19% of its weekly views to 4.23 million.
- CHRIS BROWN FT DRAKE - NO GUIDANCE (#8)
Yeah, we all knew this was coming! I expect Chris Brown to get a hit every now & then, but the real reason this is in the Top 10 is, wellā¦ Drake! Hereās the thing though, with how much music the latter has put out lately & the fact that heās got two new songs out tomorrow, they really need to be awesome to win me over, which sadly, this song isnāt. It just sounds too familiar from what weāve heard from both of these before; Iāve never minded Drakeās crooning & I respect that heās supporting women for their financial independence (although he does go off-topic pouring out his feelings after the final hook) & Chrisā vocals are better than average, but this mid-tempo urban production seems very safe & it doesnāt develop into anything more. Again, itās not bad, but this is only charting this high on name recognition & streaming alone. For me, itās a light 6/10!
- MABEL - MAD LOVE (#18)
So I have definitely been supportive of Mabelās music since her UK breakthrough, so I was certainly excited to see āDonāt Call Me Upā become her first international hit earlier this year. As for this, eh, itās not bad, but she can do a of a lot better! Letās get the big issue out of the way first; the lyrics are incredibly basic compared from what weāre used to from her, which is essentially describing getting laid. Yeah, sheās bringing that level of confidence I like hearing from her & she can pull off $exy rather well, but is it just me, or does she sound out of breath at times & the hook is trying to aim for something bigger than it actually is? I mean, Iām a sucker for the tropical vibe sheās been following recently, but this is considerably less creative than what brought to the charts in the first place. So for me, Iām thinking a very light 7/10!
- MOSTACK FT DAVE & J HUS - STINKING RICH (#19)
Hereās another example of how not necessarily having the biggest album of the week can give you the most notable impact of the singles chart. WIth Mostack, heās not done anything to really annoy me, but nothing all that impressive either. With this, sorry, Iām just lukewarm it on best. Of course, Iāve always expressed my support of Daveās & J Husā flows (see my review of āDisasterā for that), but the punchlines & bragging lines make a lot less sense here than usual & Mostackās tone goes from being either forgettable or annoying. One thing I can somewhat get behind is the slightly dark & groovy opening to the song, as well as the trumpets that close out the song, but that energy quickly dissipates for me unfortunately. I'm trying to become more generous to this genre, but even then, this is still a solid 5/10 overall.
- AVICII - HEAVEN (#20)
This song has actually been in the works since 2014, roughly around the time Avicii & Chris Martin wrote āA Sky Full Of Starsā. I wonāt say āHeavenā surpasses that level of quality, but it certainly comes close & is still amazing all the same! Both artists have always had a knack of writing an impressive vocal melody & while the subject matter is simply finding a heavenly love, the songwriting transcends it into some of the most intriguing descriptions & metaphors Iāve heard in dance music in a long time. This feels almost a story more than a song to me. The song hits crescendos & fades away at just the right times, as well as the piano chords & drippy electronic rhythms working fantastically! Iām not sure if this fits the vibe of being a massive summer club anthem, but what a fitting tribute to an incredible DJ/producer! As my new profile picture implies, I love Aviciiās new album & this song is definitely a highlight. Very strong 9/10 here!
- LIAM GALLAGHER - SHOCKWAVE (#22)
I love how Liam Gallagher is one of the very few older artists that is still essentially guaranteed to impact the Top 40 of the singles chart with their comeback single. While Iām probably not as hyped as I was when āWall Of Glassā, I canāt deny my excitment for Liamās new album is still there & that was confirmed when I heard this! Itās definitely going for a bombastic feel, with Greg Kursten contributing an organ, a tambourine & even a harmonica, all alongside the classic bass & drums. To be honest though, despite him & all the other contributors to the, the swell of Liamās vocals are really what keep this song solid for me & why Radio 1 have hopped on board with this fast. Definitely looking forward to hearing more, because for now, this is an 8/10 for me!
- AJ TRACEY - LADBROKE GROVE (#26)
Hereās an example of why Iāve never got on board with the OCCās new rules; they cap songs that get knocked back after 10 weeks, yet this was in the Top 100 for 17 weeks before getting here & it probably shouldāve sooner. That said, I canāt exactly complain either, because the song is sadly not all that good, or at least far from AJ Traceyās best. The pitched-shifted, somwhat distorted background vocals really kills the hype of this song & itās especially bad to open this up with. Thankfully, AJ Tracey tries his best to save it by using some more complex flows than his peers, but thereās so little outside of his decent MC skills that works here & the track seems to end a bit abruptly too, like, it couldāve done with another bridge or hook to slow the track down gradually instead of bringing it to a halt like that. Iām still keen to check out that debut album, but this isnāt one of the tracks Iām really attracted to. 5/10, at best!
- YOUNG T & BUGSEY FT AITCH - STRIKE A POSE (#30)
This is a song that I was preparing for next week, but apparently it had enough Apple Music presence to make the chart today. Anyway, as for this, thereās something addictive about this for sure! One trend in British hip-hop that is promising to see is that rappers outside of London are having their time in the spotlight, but the flows & the charisma here are undeniably smooth! In terms of production, what immediately stood out to me was the fuzzy bass & it has enough of a steady rhythm to make me āstrike a poseā. Of course, the lyrics are complete nonsense & you have Aitch saying that heās 19 whilst trying to go for a 32 year old woman which I found a bit unusual, but if you look beyond that, there is actually some potential for this. Iām giving this a solid 6/10 for now; itās a lot better than I was expecting!
- MOSTACK FT FREDO - IāM THE ONE (#39)
As for this Mostack entry, again, Iām honestly on two minds with this! On one hand, I can kind of support the production from Steel Banglez; the skittering beat blends with the piano melody really well & I honestly wish the latter was brought further to the front of the mix (this only happens at the end of the song). However, then we get to the delivery & content; Fredoās flow is certainly impressive but his lyrics really lack detail, but at least heās not going for this annoying warbled tone that Mostack is that describes this relationship with a London girl that heās interested in. Both of them also sound really off-key when it comes to their harmonies & thatās honestly the worst part of the song for me. I donāt know, maybe Iād have liked it more if it was a solo & at least the instrumentation is okay, but this doesnāt sound like something thatāll last. Light 5/10.
- On the albums chart, itās a fourth consecutive week at #1 for āDivinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extentā by Lewis Capaldi! Itās now the longest running #1 album to be released in 2019 so far.
- The rest of the Top 5 is: āHappiness Beginsā by The Jonas Brothers (debuts at #2, new personal best), āStackoā by Mostack (debuts at #3), āWhen We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?ā by Billie Eilish (stationary at #4) & āOffice Politicsā by The Divine Comedy (debuts at #5).
- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: āBounce Backā by Little Mix, āYou Need To Calm Downā by Taylor Swift, āA Brand New Dayā by BTS & Zata Larsson, āCastlesā by Freya Ridings, āStay [Donāt Go Away]ā by David Guetta ft Raye, āJoyā by Bastille, 'Pop Out' by Polo G ft Lil Tjay, the two Drake tracks coming out tomorrow & maybe even more.

Hi Piran, hope you have had a good week. It's great to see your observations on the singles chart as per usual.
I'm really happy Avicii managed to land 'Heaven' in the Top 20 - the whole album is an amazing experience, and although it's not 100% Avicii, it's all a great tribute to him. It's definitely what he would have wanted. It's a shame to not see TIM debut in the Top 5 on albums, although producer albums never usually do that well.
All the new releases this week are very different, all the way from garage-infused 'Ladbroke Grove', which is an odd exception to the OCC rules as you stated, to alternative from Liam Gallagher with 'Shockwave'.
Although there was change in the Top 12 this week, the entire Top 5 remains untouched yet again. It's a very odd occurrence from what I have seen. That being said, there was predicted movement on the weekly chart update, however this is one of the biggest mid-week shifts I've seen in a while. 'Shockwave' was expected to have a late Top 10 entry, though he debuts outside of the Top 20 as a whole. 'Old Town Road' also missed out on the top spot again, even though it was predicted to take the trophy this week. The drastic mid-week change links in to the weekend spikes, which is becoming more and more common in the UK charts. Songs are being downloaded and streamed more on a weekend than ever before. This changes the singles chart from the predictions majorly. This is what happened to 'Woman Like Me' from Little Mix. It was a weekend hit and died out later in the week, falling from what was predicted to be a #1 song to a debut at #5.
The charts are in a weird place at the moment; it's very exciting to see how it changes week on week (or in it's current case, doesn't change at all).

Yeah, it's been good thanks! Just been chilling out really, since my University exams are all finished & I got my results back which I was happy with. How have you been? :D
I think what ultimately kept 'I Don't Care' out in front was the fact that it had always been dominant on Apple Music, which is gaining subscribers at the similar rate to Spotify in the UK, if not faster! The chart update on Monday usually tends to underestimate songs with good streaming, but overestimate ones with good sales. An even bigger case than 'Woman LIke Me' is a single from The Vamps a little while back called 'Wake Up' (#1 on the update, #12 on the main chart).
I did see a bit of diversity in this week's new arrivals as you said & yeah, 'Heaven' is by far the best of the week! The whole of 'TIM' felt like Avicii is still speaking to us from "heaven" even though he had died. 'Heaven' might even be my favourite track from the album alongside 'SOS'!

Wow that is an incredible chart history right there!
What I find very interesting is the fact the biggest singles from his Fortune album, "Turn Up The Music" and "Don't Wake Me Up" both peaked at #10 in the US, while the former was a #1 hit in your country, and the latter peaked at #2 as well!
I checked his chart-history in Finland as well. I expected around 10 plus entries on our singles chart, but seems like only five entries, with only two as a lead! Very interestingly, those two are also his two very first singles!

In Finland, it seems like his solo career fizzled out early, but he actually got some of his biggest hits on collaborations.
I definitely agree that 'International Love' is an awesome song, but I also really like 'Five More Hours'! Apparently, that song was an original by Deorro called 'Five Hours', which was a big hit all around Europe. It took the remix to become a hit in both of our countries, but even with that, it could still never find its way onto the Hot 100.

Hey Piran! I've got exams all throughout next week so this will be a shorter comment than usual, but I do like seeing 'I Don't Care' get a 5th week at #1. I also like the climbs for 'Hold Me While You Wait' and 'SOS' in the Top 10, and I like that 'Stacko' gets a #3 debut as well, even if I do wish that 'TIM' had debuted higher than #7. I am very sad that 'Location' finally got pushed onto ACR as well.
As for the debuts, all of them are pretty decent at least this week. 'No Guidance' would get a solid 7/10 for me, while 'Mad Love' would be a light 8/10 and 'Stinking Rich' would be a strong 8/10, mostly because of Dave and somewhat J Hus as well, though I still do like MoStack's parts. 'Heaven' would only be a light 6/10 for me, my least favourite track from 'TIM', while 'Shockwave' would be a solid 5/10. I was really excited to see 'Ladbroke Grove' enter the Top 40, as it's definitely one of my favourite tracks from 'AJ Tracey'. As you might remember from my charts, it spent 10 weeks lingering around the Top 20 after an initial #25 debut, and eventually peaked at #10. It would've peaked much higher as well if the album hadn't been released on the exact same day as 'thank u, next'. 'Strike a Pose' would only be a light 6/10 for me, while 'I'm The One' would be a solid 5/10.
Next week, 'I Don't Care' will almost definitely be #1 again, purely due to the fact that both 'Old Town Road' and 'Someone You Loved' are set to be bumped onto ACR. If not for that I think 'Old Town Road' would've returned to #1. The biggest debuts will probably come from Drake, probably Top 10 or maybe Top 5 for 'Money In The Grave', but I'm not really sure what else will debut.

I would say 'Bounce Back' & 'You Need To Calm Down' might debut in the Top 10, but since most of their points are coming from sales, Top 20 might be a more realistic prediction for those at this point. Regarding the latter, do you prefer it to 'Me!'?
I guess it's cool that there were no new Top 40 arrivals that either of us disliked, but our ranking of them would probably look the complete opposite, haha.
