Okay, different styles of music but can anyone seriously say Wow has a better melody, better production values than Got My Love? Never in a million years! The streaming generation don't seem to know what good pop music is. It's like they've been brainwashed to stream certain music and the rest (well-crafted pop that used to be so dominant in the pre-streaming era is forgotten about!). The chart would be healthier if songs like Got My Love and Wow were in the chart. At least that way people can't be dismissive of the chart - it will feel more inclusive. If some really catchy pop is never getting a chance in the streaming era it's not inclusive. Good music is being left out and that is the sad truth about streaming technology. It's narrowed musical taste for millions of young people, not made it wider. In an ideal world a top 40 or top 100 streaming based chart (which is what the chart is even if the title still claims it's a singles chart!) should contain more music genres - pop, ballads, indie-rock, perhaps some heavy metal, dance etc. But it's not happened. Pure pop has almost gone, there's zero indie rock. Oasis were one of the biggest chart acts back in the 1990s. I guess you'd call them a soft rock act. Songs like Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger. Can you imagine Oasis being a chart success had they started out in the streaming era? Nope, no chance. No-one would be buying/streaming Don't Look Back In Anger. Post Malone would crush Oasis in the streaming stakes!

Overall the chart is very bad iand very disappointed. 2018 was also
a disaster. In 2017 it was a bit better with Ed sheeran, Camilla
Cabello, but this year so far and last year is a shame. It was much
better in 2013/2014 and even better from 1987 till 1994. (that was the
best era for music.) But this year and last year was extremely terrible
and with Streaming bringing a lot of garbage urban hip hop closer to the
top, it starts getting unacceptable.
I have been
following the UK charts continously, each week from 1987 (my teen
years), and i have continued through my 40s and 50s , but now i start
really giving up losing any interest...

And
the German , US charts are even worse, so the only charts that is a bit
better and still worth at least to read/listen is the UK, the US /
German charts are simply dead.

And
it is not that i am getting old. Simply (even if looking back a few
years when music was better) , today the music writers/producers just
dont have a feel/inspiration/will, to create good music.
If
i were too old for new days pop, i wouldn't have liked Daft Punk ,
Blurred Lines Hozer - Take me to church a few years ago. Or Little mix -
Black magic was also good, but anything comes out is a total
disappointment nowdays. (just look at Little mix's lead single last
year, very boring, generic..) Terrible. I hope that this year finally
will have some good releases.

I disagree that good music isn't being created. In my humble opinion it is... but A) it's not getting in the chart, and B) streaming has narrowed the type of music people want to listen to. Pure pop seems less popular with people born after 2000. Sad but that's the way it is.

People still produce catchy pop songs - but the streaming generation are not that interested. They want r and b urban stuff which does not put a lot of emphasis on catchy up-tempo melodies. I like other music genres too - not just uptempo pop. But Tamaz seems to like poppy stuff so I was giving some examples of catchy pop songs.

Sorry, but i have to say, the above songs are just not hit bombs, just something medium level.

Let me tell you (and please listen) what are the real hits (some examples from between 1987 and 1994) : Maxi Priest - Close to you, Sinead O connor - Nothing compares 2 u, Chris Isaak - Wicked Games, Bangles - Eternal flame, Extreme - More than words, Mr. Big - To be with you, Shakespeare sister's - Stay .. you wont find such these days.

Back to the current times:
It is not fully true that streamers are not interested in catchy pop, as Justin Timberlake - can't stop the feeling, Luis Fonsi - Despacito, Ed Sheeran - Shape of you..etc..charted, but somehow from 2018 something changed and urban is getting more and more attention. Last year we had some good pop charting high (Portugal - Feel it still, Rudimental - These days, George ezra - Paradise, Shotgun, but they were always beaten by Drake...And i highlight last year we had only a few good pop songs even to the prior years, not to mention the 1987 and 1994.

Checking today's hits, what are good and deserve to be hit: For example - Jack Savoretti - candlelight . good songs, charting good in download only charts, itunes (it was even number 3 on friday), i hope it will be a bit hit in the official top 100 also.

But i still stay that streaming should count less:
For example the ratio to the downloads should be increased( for example 1:10000 ), or/AND only the streamings should count where the listeners listens to at least 4/5 of the song (instead of the 30 seconds).

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘7 Rings’ by Ariana Grande is #1 on the singles chart for a third week in a row. This week, it accumulated 71,600 combined sales (including 8.96 million audio & video streams). I’d expect her to be at the top again next week given that her new album came out today.

- ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ by Sam Smith & Normani is #1 on the national airplay chart for a second consecutive week.

- ‘7 Rings’ by Ariana Grande is still dominating the YouTube chart too, with a second consecutive week at #1 & down 32.8 percent in views to 3.94 million this past week.

- BILLIE EILISH – BURY A FRIEND (#7)
Love her or hate her, Billie Eilish is certainly a unique upcoming artist in pop! I would’ve compared her to someone like Lana Del Rey at first, but her content has been getting increasingly darker as we approach the release the date of her debut album being released! This just gets more intriguing yet creepy with every listen (especially if you watch the video) with those subtle taps & quaky beat to be broken by those warbled screams! I also enjoy Billie’s lower range in the hook to build up some of that weirdness, even if her vocals rely on pitch-shifting a bit too much for my liking. Overall though, Billie Eilish is a new act that’s dividing many people’s opinions, but for someone who’s only 17 & is already showing a ton of potential with her singles so far, I’m absolutely chuffed that she got her first Top 10 hit, even if many other hits of hers perhaps deserved it more. For me, this is a solid 7/10!

- FREDO FT DAVE – ALL I EVER WANTED (#15)
I feel like I should like this way more than I do. See, ‘Funky Friday’ has always been a good grime song & I still stand by the opinion that it truly deserved the #1 last year, but I’m just not connecting to this in the same way somehow. I can definitely get behind the grit in both Fredo’s & Dave’s delivery, over the hollow beat & the dazzle of the keys, as well as how honest the content is about Fredo’s troubled past. It’s also clear that the collaborators still complement each other well which I certainly don’t mind hearing. I just feel like there’s too many different genres being blended together here, which makes the overall beat sound clunky & the intensity in the vocals given how deep the content is just isn’t there. I absolutely respect this song, but it doesn’t have the same impact I’m used to from these two. Still not bad by any means, so on that note, light 6/10!

- 21 SAVAGE – A LOT (#36)
So despite the fact that 21 Savage is in the news for a potential deportation from the US to the UK after it was found that he overstayed his visa, this might’ve charted anyway since it was already being pushed as a single. This could actually be one of his best singles, especially as his flow is more consistent & on-point, even if J Cole just comes in & is clearly on another level. I like how the latter brings content finally meaning we get a trap song that speaks against bragging or comparisons in his verse, although him calling out artists who makes memes seems a bit unnecessary, since he doesn’t really explain why that’s a problem, because I certainly can’t see why it would be! I still don’t know if I’ll ever check out ‘I Am > I Was’ in full, but it might actually be okay after all if this is a sign of what the rest of the album is like. I’m thinking a solid 6/10!

- LAUV & TROYE SIVAN – I’M SO TIRED… (#39)
Haha, it’s ironical that this enters the Top 40 in the chart that’ll be valid for Valentine’s Day & also that for as big of a global smash that ‘I Like Me Better’ was, that had only a very small impact in the UK charts, but this is somehow a little bigger. To be honest though, I might actually prefer this one! Of course, given how smooth both artists’ vocals are, it’s unsurprising that these two collaborated. I also like the acoustic groove this has, even though it can quickly head into repetitive chemistry & you also realise that there’s not a huge ton of chemistry between Lauv & Troye Sivan either. This anti-love song actually could’ve stuck the landing if it had more of a melody, but as it is, it’s still catchy & fun, so fairly good as a whole. Light 7/10!

- On the albums chart, The Specials win a very close chart battle to reach #1 for the first time with ‘Encore’. It leads by just 1060 sales & is their first album of new material in 37 years! 89% of its total combined sales were physical copies.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Halfway There’ by Busted (debuts at #2, third album to peak at #2), ‘The Greatest Showman’ [Soundtrack] (2-3, lowest it’s charted in two months), ‘Ripples’ by Ian Brown from Stone Roses (debuts at #4) & ‘Third Avenue’ by Fredo (debuts at #5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Breathe’ by Camelphat & Christophe ft Jem Cooke, ‘Who Do You Love’ by The Chainsmokers ft 5 Seconds Of Summer, ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’ by Ariana Grande, ‘Juice’ by Lizzo, ‘Handmade Heaven’ by Marina, ‘Desire’ by Sub Focus & Dimension, ‘Talk’ by Khalid & maybe even more.

Hey Piran! I like seeing '7 rings' at #1 again, and I think we should probably get used to seeing it there. Originally I thought it wouldn't last as long as 'thank u, next', but with the release of the album and with it still being way ahead of the rest of the market I think it might do it now. The only thing that looks like it could knock it off at the moment is Ariana herself.
As for the new debuts this week, 'bury a friend' is a light 5/10 for me, and to be honest I can't really see the appeal behind Billie Eilish's music in general, outside of it being creepy and mysterious to listen to once. 'All I Ever Wanted' is a solid 7/10 for me, but I agree with you that it doesn't hold up to 'Funky Friday' or even '18HUNNA', and 'a lot' is a light-solid 9/10 for me, definitely my favourite debut of the week (not surprising given that it's #1 on my charts). 'i'm so tired...' would be a strong 6/10.
If you do ever decide to check out 'i am > i was', just know that 'a lot' is fairly different to the rest of the album. Not massively different (like 'all my friends', which definitely stands out compared to the rest of the album), but different enough to the point where you wouldn't immediately think 'a lot' was from the same album as a lot of the tracks on 'i am > i was'. Also, I don't think J. Cole called out artists who make memes, but rather is using it as a metaphor to compare his massive success ("make millions") to much less successful artists who can't make that claim, and whose only claim to fame could be that people "make memes" about them. It also seems like a reference to Tory Lanez' verse on Meek Mill's 'Litty' ("See, we both be making M’s: they be makin' memes, I be makin' millions").
Looking ahead to next week, I don't think it's any secret who's going to be #1 on both charts, so I think it's more fun to speculate about how far ahead she'll be, and which track will be #1. I think that 'thank u, next' will debut with somewhere in the region of 100k - 150k sales, with around 40k - 50k of those being from streams.
The singles chart will be more exciting, since even I didn't expect 'thank u, next' to get the kind of streams that it currently is. All 12 of its tracks fall inside the Top 15 on Spotify, both in the UK and globally, and in the UK only 'Wow.' at #10, 'Sweet but Psycho' at #13 and 'Don't Call Me Up' at #14 stop a complete clean sweep. '7 rings' and 'break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored' will definitely hold the Top 2, but which way around? '7 rings' has the advantage on Spotify with 908k streams to 785k, but 'break up' could climb through the week, and its new music video is sure to give it an advantage. It is also slightly ahead of '7 rings' on iTunes. Additionally, which of Ariana's other tracks will end up in the Top 5 (since I can't see her not having 3 of the Top 5)? Currently it looks like it'll be 'needy' but it could definitely change throughout the week.
AJ Tracey is also definitely worth a mention, as he manages to get 4 tracks from his new album in the Top 40 on Spotify, and 14 inside the Top 100, even despite Ariana's takeover. He could very well be heading for a #2 album next week.

Yeah, it looks like between Ariana Grande & AJ Tracey (& maybe The Chainsmokers/5 Seconds Of Summer), next week will be the busiest one for debuts in a while! Had the new chart rules not been put into place, Ariana would likely have had her entire album in the Top 20 & maybe came second to Ed's record for simultaneous Top 10 placings.
'Thank U, Next' seems like an early contender to lead, but if 'Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored' can catch up a little on YouTube, I think that might have a chance of debuting at #1 on Friday or potentially getting there the week after. Interestingly, all of the #1s in 2019 so far have come from an artist whose name starts with the letter 'A'. :P
We seem to agree on 'All I Ever Wanted' & 'I'm So Tired...' for the most part, but it appears that you like 'A Lot' way more than I do, which was expected & you like Billie Eilish considerably less than I do. Like I said, her style isn't for everyone.
Your take on J Cole's part in 'A Lot' makes sense too, but the only thing is that would be contradictive of his line saying that he was never one for the bragging. I will say he does at least sound more convincing at boasting about his luxuries than almost all the other rappers in the trap scene right now.
Ariana will probably get three of the Top 5 as you said, with 'Needy' probably having the best chance since I doubt the title track will come off ACR since it would need at least a 50% gain in streams, which it won't appear to do before Friday.

Not only is it set to be a busy week for debuts on the UK charts next week, it's set to be incredibly busy on my own charts. Between 'thank u, next' looking to have all 12 of its tracks inside my Top 14 (with only 2 of Ariana's other tracks interrupting), 'AJ Tracey' looking to make a big effect and a few other tracks set to debut, my next chart could very well be over 50% new debuts!
Yeah, if the new rules hadn't been put in place Ariana would definitely be looking at a ridiculous takeover. I don't know if all her tracks could've made the Top 20, but all of them in the Top 40 would be inevitable, and 5 out of the Top 10 would've been pretty likely as well.
'break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored' is definitely holding up very well, with the gap between it and '7 rings' closing on the most recent Spotify chart, so I definitely think it's a contender for #1 either this coming week or the week after. I can't even tell if it's ahead on Apple Music, since the entire album charts twice (presumably the regular and clean versions). 'break up' is #1 and #94, while '7 rings' is #9, #16 and #117 (I'm assuming the single, album track, and clean version are all charting separately). Whichever ends up on top, I think it'll be a pretty close race, and personally I'm rooting for 'break up', if only to get Ariana another #1 and to allow her to knock herself off the top!
The 3rd track is currently looking like it'll be 'needy', though I think that 'bloodline' could make a Top 20 or maybe even Top 10 debut the week after, since it seems to be holding up better than most of the album tracks at the moment. The track has "single" written all over it as well, so I think it'll be the next single after 'break up'.
It is pretty interesting that all #1s so far this year (and seemingly for the foreseeable future) have been from artists with names beginning with 'A', but that's not very hard when there's only been 2 #1s so far haha! On a similar note, my 3 favourite tracks from 'thank u, next' at the moment are the 3 tracks beginning with 'B'.
The album is also already my most streamed of 2019, with its 317 streams passing Mike Stud's '4THEHOMIES' with 301, 21 Savage's 'i am > i was' with 171 and Post's 'beerbongs & bentleys' with 122.

It looks like both of our personal charts will be busy, as at least 10 tracks from Ariana are going to be in my new Top 40, with the other two from 'Thank U, Next' probably in the bubbling under. Then there are debuts from: M-22, The Chainsmokers & 5 Seconds Of Summer, as well as the UK's Eurovision entry that are going to be in the Top 40 among them.
I think it'll be close too, but like you, I'm still hoping it'll be 'Break Up, With Your Girlfriend', although it looks like it'll be more likely that '7 Rings' gets it given how things have gone throughout the week. Did you see that 'Thank U, Next' has broken the record for biggest opening week Spotify streams for an album by a female artist with 361 million! In other news, 'Havana' moved up into the all-time global Spotify Top 10, making Camila the only female lead artist currently there, although I could see Ariana easily joining her soon!
Interestingly, as well as my three favourite songs from 'Thank U, Next' starting with a 'B', my two least favourites are the tracks that start with an 'I', haha!
