Just been checking through the 'End Of Year Top 100' chart. Some songs stood out as I don't recall them being in the top 40 in 2019 although I may have missed them. They are: Queen's Don't Stop Me Now & Bohemian Rapsody, Tyga - Taste, Rudimental - These Days, George Ezra - Paradise and a few others. If they diddn't reach the top 40, how could they be in the end of year top 100?

Is there any reasonable explanation why most of latest Kylie's singles didn't impact the top 40 or even the top 100 while the Golden album did quite well in the charts?

avatar

Foxes

1

Because it's mostly the older generation who bought the album physically, while the singles themselves don't do very well on streaming or digital sales.

B

Brian

Yeah, because she's 50 years old. Legacy artists don't have hit singles.

D

Damián

1

I thought it was the main reason too Brian, digital and download sales killed those artists' singles sadly

D

Damián

I totally agree with U. I'm 45 and since digital era stopped buying singles, just the album

I note there are 47 drop-outs from the Top 75 this week...and every one a Christmas song! Has this ever happened before?

The closest we have had to this is last year when 34 Christmas songs dropped out of the Top 75

I haven't been paying attention to the Top 40 for the past 6 or 7 years really, but as a seasoned chart nerd for a couple of decades before that I was briefly quite 'excited' by We Built This City plummeting 1-21-84. By the old standards of the published charts and Guinness British Hit Singles books, which used the Top 75, it was way below even the long-standing record (5 weeks) for shortest-lived Number One single ever, at a mere 2 weeks on chart. Even including the full Top 100 it is certainly only going to manage 3.

Then, though, I had a think about some of the other charity hits of recent years with extremely niche 'appeal', and looked up the Grenfell version of Bridge Over Troubled Water and the NHS Choir's A Bridge Over You – and while the former managed a relatively giant 6 weeks in the Top 100, the latter indeed turns out to have been the most ephemeral shooting-star among Number Ones ever: 1-29-out, just the 2 weeks altogether. So Ladbaby, whilst still clearly possessing no lasting appeal at all, has in fact narrowly avoided equalling a very unwanted (and surely virtually impossible to beat) chart record this week.

Very true, Velvet! I remember when Iron Maiden's sole No. 1, the controversial 'Bring Your Daughter..,' (which my younger sister felt was evil), tracked 1-1-9-32-68 at the start of 1991. That was considered remarkable in those days when it was all physical sales.

Having said that, I don't remember anything in the 1990s to match the performance of Shut Up And Dance's 'Raving I'm Raving', which ran 2-15-OUT, as a result of being deleted following a lawsuit by Marc Cohn or his record company (I forget which) - otherwise, capturing the mood of the times as it did, it would probably have topped the chart.

Very pleased for Ava Max that she's got a second week at the top, and also that Clean Bandit and Marina have finally cracked the Top 20 after underperforming previously - in terms of sheer musicality, I think it's one of Clean Bandit's finest productions to date; Marina's voice is very beautiful, and the melancholy song is the most endearing one I've heard to feature the word 'Baby' prominently in the romantic sense since probably the Supremes' 'Baby Love'.

Absolute nonsense. This chart is utterly worthless, laughable.

Totally, why even bother? Though these aren’t quite as bad as the US charts which are a complete shambles. Sadly I don’t think they’ll be changed anytime soon as OCC seems to be backed by the record companies & they like all this pop rap drivel..

We need the Beatles to reform, Elvis to rise from the dead and Stock, Aitken And Waterman to release all their unreleased demos. That will shake up the chart! :P

Stock, Aitken & Waterman … I remember them well. Loads of artists singing to the same back beat tempo. Jason, Kylie, Rick & Sonia arrrrhhh! I think I actually fancied Sonia at one time OMG what was I thinking.

Philip

I beg to differ, Paul! Of course it depends on your taste in music, but I think 2018 has been a strong year for tunes - good, old-fashioned melodies and vocal anthems, and there are lots of those hanging around still at the moment.

Oh, how I miss the SAW glory days! It's unbelievable that artists such as Kylie or Rick Astley still rocks the charts after 31 years. That's an achieve in pop music

Happy New Year, pop pickers! Looking forward to an exciting pop year, I think there'll be many more upbeat and varied singles than the last five or so.

Losing It is an absolute banger, would definitely be at least top 10 in the pre-streaming era.

Happy New Year! :)
I agree that 'Losing It' is an awesome dance anthem, although for as much as I want it to, I don't think it'll ever have the momentum to go Top 10 on sales.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Sweet But Psycho’ by Ava Max is #1 on the singles chart for a second week in a row, thanks to over 71,000 combined sales this past week, which includes 7.95 million streams.

- ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart’ by Mark Ronson ft Miley Cyrus returns to #1 on the national airplay chart. Unsurprisingly, every song in the Top 40 of the radio charts in a gainer in the aftermath of Christmas.

- In the latest YouTube chart archive (the Christmas week), ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey was #1 with 2.42 million views. Whenever this chart next updates, it should be either Maroon 5 or Ava Max replacing her.

- All 55 Christmas songs that were in last week’s chart have dropped out entirely. ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ exiting from #2 ties for the biggest fall of the chart ever!

- I believe ‘Baby Shark’ jumping 27-6 makes it the first cartoon song to go Top 10 since ‘Bob The Builder’ just over 18 years ago! I’m not entirely certain on that though.

- POST MALONE – WOW (#5)
For as much as I personally like Post Malone, a lot of critics have called him out in not sounding like he cares in a lot of hits, but that’s certainly not the case with this one! It’s probably the most fun I’ve heard him sing since ‘Candy Paint’ & he’s not being spiteful either, which is how brag rap should sound! I love the underlying bounce & clicks that dominating the production & while the content is completely ridiculous, at least some of the lyrics are a laugh instead of being generic. I’ve been streaming this a lot since it came out & with an official video still to come, expect that to continue. I’m thinking a strong 7/10!

- JAX JONES FT YEARS & YEARS – PLAY (#19)
For as weird as this collaboration seems at first going off by name recognition alone, it comes together surprisingly well. Olly Alexander certainly injects a fun personality into this that along with the rest of the usual Years’ & Years’ instrumentation will easily make it big in the clubs. However, while the structure is different to most dance songs, why is it that outside of ‘Instruction’, Jax Jones seems to use the same elements in his production in a lot of songs, like, I swear I’ve heard that same beat from him at least have a dozen time. I think it’s a positive track to start the New Year with, but not one I see myself revisiting often. Light 6/10.

- CARDI B – MONEY (#35)
I’m a little surprised as to why Cardi B pushed this as her next single. I mean, it’s not even a track off her debut album & with the number of requests she’s been getting to be a guest rapping & the fact that she just had a kid, you’d think she’d take a break from promoting her solo material. Sadly, despite her being very much a “hit-or-miss” artist, this is one of her weaker songs to chart. The production she’s working with just doesn’t suit her at all between the blocky trap skitters & the sharp piano chords that don’t have anywhere as much intensity as they’re meant to, Cardi B also sounds way less engaged & with a much more basic flow than we’re used to from her & when you add in the occasional chipmunk vocals, this ends up doing nothing for me whatsoever. Not precisely terrible, but not all that good either. Light 4/10.

- RUSS SPLASH – GUN LEAN (#36)
Given how strong this was doing on both YouTube & Trending throughout the week, I kind of expected it to break into the Top 40. What I didn’t think this would be a song that would inspire a mini dance craze, but you know what, given the bass groove & Russ’ deeper delivery, it seems to achieve that aspect okay. It’s just a shame that I can’t understand a lot of what he’s saying due to a barely passable flow & it quickly switches back into generic lyrics about admiring a woman just because of her physical appearance. Again, I get the hype behind it, but I don’t see it sticking around. Solid 5/10.

- On the albums chart, the soundtrack to ‘The Greatest Showman’ spends a 25th non-consecutive week at #1, thanks to another 40,600 combined sales since last Friday! It has now been at the top of the chart than any other album this century (‘21’ by Adele previously held the record at 24 weeks!).

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra, ‘Odyssey’ by Take That, ‘A Star Is Born’ [Soundtrack] & ‘Unchained Melody’ by Roy Orbison.

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Favourite Thing’ by Fleur East, ‘Undecided’ by Chris Brown, ‘Losing It’ by Fisher, ‘Desire’ by Sub Focus & Dimension, ‘Leave Me Alone’ by Flipp Dinero & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

What was the worst rating you've ever gave

avatar

Piran

For a song that's reached the Top 40 since I started doing these reviews, I think the lowest ever was a 2/10 (for 'Jumanji' by B Young & 'Stoopid' by 6ix9ine).

I'm a little surprised with the re-entries though. Lots of songs seem like songs I haven't heard since ages resurfacing in the charts again over newer songs.

This may be partly the product of a lot of whole-year retrospective chart run-downs on radio and TV lately, reminding people of the big hits of the year and bringing some of them back up temporarily before they fall again next week.

avatar

Piran

3

I think older songs are re-entering thanks to Spotify releasing their "Best Of 2018" playlists.

avatar

Piran

0

'Gun Lean' was tolerable when I heard it earlier, but I can immediately tell whether or not a song is going to get a high replay factor for me & this wasn't one of them.
Regarding 'Jumanji', the lyrics are ridiculous & also kind of disrespectful, B Young's whiny vocals are terrible & I swear I've heard that tropical underlying beats dozens of times before, yet here it's somehow still even more basic.

avatar

Piran

0

Songs like: 'Shallow', 'Body', 'No Tears Left To Cry' have all definitely been 9s for me this year, to name a few.
The last song I've heard that would be 10 was 'Castle On The Hill'. It was always an amazing song, but it had to grow on me a little bit more & it wouldn't have got that score in the week that it debuted (which is typically when I do my commentary on songs).
Really, the only song I've ever heard that would get a perfect score on the first listen is 'Love Story'. Huge Swiftie here by the way! ;)

Hey Piran! I love that 'Sweet but Psycho' gets a 2nd week at #1, and its consistent increases in sales should mean that it has at least 3 more weeks at #1, provided nothing else overtakes it. 'Wow.' definitely has a chance at being the next #1 after 'Sweet but Psycho' goes onto ACR, with it being #3 on both Spotify and Apple Music, but it would need to hold on and probably increase slightly over the next 3 weeks. I like that 'Ruin My Life' finally manages to reach the Top 10, and as for 'Baby Shark' reaching the region... well, I guess congratulations are in order, but I still don't have to like it haha!
As for the new entries this week, 'Wow.' is definitely my favourite. I'm pretty sure I've already told you this, but even though 'Wow.' is my 7th least favourite Post Malone song, it's still a weak-solid 8/10 for me. My least favourite is 'Feeling Whitney' with 5/10, but my 2nd least favourite is 'Go Flex' with a strong 7/10. I also like 'Play' quite a lot, and I'd give that a strong 7/10. As for 'Money' and 'Gun Lean', though, I'm not a fan of either. In fact, they get the exact same scores from me as you gave them - light 4/10 and solid 5/10.
Next week '18HUNNA' by Headie One & Dave will definitely be making a big entrance, currently #10 on Spotify and #8 on Apple Music, but I'm not even sure if anything else will be able to make a debut. There's really nothing else getting sufficient streams at the moment.

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Gameskiller! How have you been this week? :)
Yeah, its massive sales lead & smaller streaming lead, along with its gains in both metrics mean that 'Sweet But Psycho' should reach at least a month at #1 which would be awesome considering the song spent five weeks at the top of my own charts!
Did you hear about the new chart rules by the way? It's about ACR, although it doesn't seem like there will be a massive effect based on what this article has to say about it: http://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=314709
I agree with you on 'Ruin My Life' hitting the Top 10 & with 'Baby Shark', haha, I still find it too catchy or just ignore or dislike, but I will say that YouTube is essentially the only reason it's here at this point.
I don't think I've heard 'Feeling Whitney' before, but of the Post Malone songs I have heard, 'Rockstar' would have to be my least favourite so far, as my re-ordering of the Chart Of 2018 shows. 'Congratulations' would be a close second too, although neither are terrible.
It's cool that we agree on so many of the debuts this week, although 'Undecided' by Chris Brown could gain enough traction before the end of the tracking week to make an impact. Right now, 'Favourite Thing' is collapsing too fast on sales & doesn't have enough streaming to make the Top 40, even if it probably does appear in tomorrow's update. '18HUNNA' seems a likely Top 40 debut, although it's too hard to tell when I type up my reviews, since the iTunes chart is only a couple of hours behind real time, while the Spotify ones are either a day or two behind usually. I still think 'Saturday Night' by Khalid might reach the Top 40 in the next chart though.

avatar

Piran

1

By the way, I don't know if you watch The Voice, but it looks like 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' is doing reasonably well on sales thanks to a certain audition last night. I don't know if it'll end up being a re-entry on Friday, but it would be cool if it does! :)

avatar

Piran

0

Same! Hopefully that'll be the breakthrough mainstream genre in 2019... you never know.

avatar

Piran

-1

Because Post Malone's soulful lower range is just fine in my opinion & he works with a lot better production too. Regarding Ramz, I can only go by 'Barking' & 'Family Tree', but at least he sounds like he's having fun in both of those.

avatar

Foxes

0

I would love to see 'Sweet but Psycho' spend a month at #1. Though it didn't quite reach that high on my charts, it did peak at #5 and has spent 7 weeks in the Top 10 so far.
Yeah, I heard about the new chart rules. It makes sense; ACR only affects a song's streams, so it should only take into account a song's streams as well. It does also prevent labels from avoiding ACR by discounting tracks, and it also stops songs that are declining on sales but increasing on streams from being put onto ACR before they could reach their peak.
'Feeling Whitney' is the last track of the deluxe edition of 'Stoney', so, unless you're a massive Post Malone fan like me, it's not that surprising if you haven't heard it. For me, 'Congratulations' is fairly low down the list with a solid 8/10, but 'rockstar' is my 2nd favourite of Post's songs with a perfect 100/100, as my re-ordering shows. The only track I like more than it is '92 Explorer'.
I can see 'Saturday Nights' making it as well. It climbed to #38 on the most recent Spotify chart, so if it keeps climbing it could probably make it, despite it being #75 on Apple Music at the moment.
I don't watch The Voice, but it'd be cool to see 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' re-enter, though it isn't even in the Spotify or Apple Music Top 200 so I doubt it at the moment.

My least favourite is baby clean bandit baby shark - pinkfong going bad - meek mill imagine - ariana grande

Piran

I can see why people hate 'Baby Shark', even if I'm still not too bothered about it.
'Imagine' wasn't too bad, but a bit of a disappointment coming from someone as talented as Ariana Grande.
'Going Bad' is one of Meek Mill's more tolerable songs, but still never really cared for it too much.
I do like 'Baby' though, even if it's not Clean Bandit's best.

avatar

Piran

'Funky Friday' & especially 'Sweet But Psycho' are good!
'Without Me' is okay, probably Halsey's best solo song.
