What happened to the other Sigala album tracks? Were they made uneligible by the record company?

Yes, I am so happy the Shallow debuted that high and with the movie being released in could go top 10 next week which would be awesome.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Promises’ by Calvin Harris & Sam Smith is at the top of the singles chart for a fifth straight week! It has a lead of around 12,000 combined sales over its nearest competitor, ‘Happier’ by Marshmello & Bastille.

- On top of that, it’s also six consecutive weeks at #1 on the airplay chart for ‘Promises’!

- ‘I Love It’ by Kanye West & Lil Pump was the most watched song on YouTube in the UK again this past week. It was viewed 2.76 million times, down 28.5 percent from last week.

- Meanwhile, Rita Ora makes chart history this week as ‘Let You Love Me’ becomes her 13th Top 10 hit, which is now more Top 10s than any other British female artist!

- I’m also especially surprised but pleased that ‘High Hopes’ is now Panic! At The Disco’s highest charting song in the UK now & I really hope for it to go Top 10 next week.

- LADY GAGA & BRADLEY COOPER – SHALLOW (#13)
I’m really impressed by how much this managed to sell this week & it makes me think that ‘A Star Is Born’ could go to #1 on the albums chart next week if the sales remain consistent throughout the week. Anyway, this was a spectacular choice for a lead single! ‘Shallow’ is a slow-building conversation over a beautiful picked acoustic guitar melody, which burst into a body of drums & pedal steel guitar. The vocals are amazing too, Bradley Cooper's deep & soulful delivery might not be among the best I’ve heard in recent films, but he still has a lot of earnestness here to let Lady Gaga blow everyone’s mind with her part; starting off sturdy before gradually building into a heavy wail with massive belting. Either way, if this song is anything to go by, ‘A Star Is Born’ is going to be an interesting tale indeed! As a rating, I’m thinking a strong 8/10 at the moment.

- LIL WAYNE FT KENDRICK LAMAR – MONA LISA (#21)
I have to admit that I underestimated the hype that there was for this album, but with tracks like this, it’s definitely understandable! The first feature that stands out is that the production is incredibly sinister, opening with wild piano notes, a dark beat & even some violins later in the song, which fits the also sinister content well, as a woman sets up a plot to rob her “boyfriend”. The level of description here is certainly good & while Lil Wayne’s part is decent, the instrumentation drops out around three & a half minutes into the song for Kendrick’s super quick delivery, among some of the best I’ve heard from him in a while now! Lil Wayne’s emotion at the very end of this hits hard too, especially the intense anger after his almost tearful outro. Honestly, it stands out so much from all the grime & trap we have in the charts today, so hopefully there’s more of this to come. Strong 7/10 for me!

- LIL WAYNE FT XXXTENTACION – DON’T CRY (#28)
So ‘Tha Carter V’ was a better album that I was expecting, but this is still the worst track from me & a real struggle to get through! Firstly, if you’re telling somebody not to cry, then sampling XXXTENTACION’s horribly droning painful wail was a terrible idea. I understand that Lil Wayne is trying to overcome the situations he’s faced throughout his life, but he sounds a lot less engaged & focussed than other tracks on this album. The verses just didn’t have the impact that Lil Wayne was trying to go for sadly, but the hook was intolerable for me. Sorry, I’m not a fan, 3/10.

- DJ SNAKE FT SELENA GOMEZ, CARDI B & OZUNA – TAKI TAKI (#30)
I’m still mostly undecided on the production from DJ Snake, which has an unusually dark sound for this reggaetón vibe that we’re used to. The synth loop and drum programming are definitely infectious, but the former is pitched way too high that it’s a little annoying unfortunately, which is a problem considering that’s the main underlying beat for the song. Ozuna’s first verse might be a bit disappointing due to him having very little charisma, but Cardi B brings slightly better bars due to a consistently solid flow, however Selena Gomez’s verse is arguably the best, with her bringing a very flirtatious approach in both English & Spanish! I might not be won over completely yet, but I’m liking more with each listen, so for now, light 6/10!

- MK X JONAS BLUE X BECKY HILL – BACK & FORTH (#37)
It took me a few listens to get into this & while I don’t see it being a huge hit in the same way that ‘17’ was, it could very well come close! What surprised me is exactly how upbeat & dynamic this was; yeah, I like MK’s warm piano-house style, as well as Becky Hill showing off her soulful vocals with a lot of range, even if I think she could’ve done a better job on the hook, it falls a little flat for me. Then you have Jonas Blue for the bridge, where the rhythm speeds up & there’s a Becky Hill vocal loop over a heavier beat, which due to the huge amount of groove in that means that I think it’s the best part of the song! I guess for a song about the highs & lows of a relationship, the lyrics are a bit too blunt to make it really stand out, but it’s still well executed for an October dance track. On that note, light 7/10!

- On the albums chart, ‘Blood Red Roses’ becomes Rod Steward’s ninth #1. It accumulated around 41,000 combined sales since it was released last Friday.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Dancing Queen’ by Cher (debuts at #2), ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack (2-3), ‘Kamikaze’ by Eminem (1-4) & ‘Tha Carter V’ by Lil Wayne (debuts at #5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could be entering the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Funky Friday’ by Dave & Fredo, ‘Without Me’ by Halsey, ‘I Want You To Freak’ by Rak-Su, ‘Polaroid’ by Jonas Blue, Liam Payne & Lennon Stella, ‘1999’ by Charli XCX & Troye Sivan, ‘Stoopid’ by 6ix9ine ft Bobby Shmurda, 'One Shot' by Mabel, a couple of tracks from the soundtrack to ‘A Star Is Born’ & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! I like that 'Promises' is at #1 for a 5th week, but I think that 'Happier' will be overtaking it either next week or the week after. It's overtaken it on Spotify already, and is still climbing slowly, while 'Promises' is falling slowly. It's also ahead on YouTube now thanks to the new video. The dark horse here could be a completely unexpected debut straight in at #1 though - Dave and Fredo's 'Funky Friday' has shot straight to #1 on the Spotify chart, and #2 on the Apple Music chart (where the #1 is 'Eastside', which is now on ACR). If it can stay there for the rest of the week on both platforms, it could go straight to #1. I do think it's more likely that we'll just see a Top 10 debut, though, which would still be great. I'm not really sure why this track's doing so well since Dave's previous best was #17 with 'No Words', and his last track 'Hangman' debuted and peaked at #30, but I really like Dave as an artist so it'd be great to see him get his first Top 10 hit.

As for the new entries this week, I wasn't really a fan of most of them. 'Shallow' would be a light 5/10 for me, I like Kendrick's part in 'Mona Lisa' but I'm not a huge fan of the rest of the song, so probably a strong 6/10, 'Don't Cry' is definitely the weakest track that I've heard from 'Tha Carter V' (though I've only heard 4 tracks) with a weak 4/10, I'm very similar to you on 'Taki Taki'; at the moment I'd give it a 6/10 but it is growing on me with every listen, and 'Back & Forth' is the best out of the new entries in my opinion, with a 7/10.

I'm surprised that 'Kamikaze' fell all the way to #4 this week, and I think now that it's behind 'The Greatest Showman' it won't be going back to #1. If it had fallen to #3 behind the 2 new albums i could see it going back next week or the week after, but if it's behind 'The Greatest Showman' it probably won't get ahead of it again. I'm also kind of sad that 'YSIV' could only manage to debut at #19, and that it couldn't beat the #13 debut of 'Bobby Tarantino II'. I really want Logic to get bigger in the UK; he's one of the best rappers around at the moment.

'Funky Friday' is basically guaranteed to enter next week, and 'Without Me' seems pretty likely as well. A few tracks from 'A Star is Born' look likely as well. I'd like if 'Polaroid' and 'One Shot' made it as well. 'Taki Taki' will almost definitely climb, and hopefully 'Be Alright' and 'High Hopes' make the Top 10!

Hey Gameskiller! :)
Yeah, 'Promises' appears to have peaked everywhere, but it still have a big enough lead on sales that I think it'll get one more week at the top. I have a gut feeling that the new Little Mix single being released on Friday could be #1 given how anticipated they're new album is!
I could definitely see 'Funky Friday' getting the #1 on streaming next week if it remains stable on Apple Music & Spotify, but if not, 'Happier' will probably take it there. Either way, it seems like the former will probably end up getting a Top 10 debut overall regardless.
I'm surprised for the low debut of Logic's new album, but on the topic of the albums chart, I think 'The Greatest Showman' could even stand a chance at returning to #1 for a bit if 'Kamikaze' fell below it.
'Without Me' seems consistent across all platforms, even if it's not massive in any particular metric. 'Taki Taki' is actually #1 on Spotify worldwide at the moment, so I think it'll be a slow burner in the UK.
I agree with your thoughts on the debuts (except 'Shallow') & the other predictions for next week. It's so hard to think that Panic! At The Disco are charting higher than they ever have before after this long, but good for them!
Finally, I read somewhere on Twitter than 'Consequences' will be Camila's next single, do you know if this is true or not?

Thanks Jstar! I bet you're particularly pleased that 'Shallow' is my favourite debut of the week. :)
I'm not too bad thanks, how are you?

Hey Piran. Good Sunday to you. Tomorrow is Columbus day in the U.S tomorrow so I am off which is great.

Yeah I see you really had an in depth review which is cool. I haven't checked the U.K charts in a while so it was good to get a little background from you. Well the Shallow should definitely go top 10 in the U.K next week.

Piran

Oh cool! So does that mean the Hot 100 article will post on Tuesday, or is it only a holiday in certain states?
Given how well the UK have responded to soundtracks in 2018, that's definitely a possibility, although streaming will probably make it a low Top 10 if it does make it. That said, it would still be Lady Gaga's first Top 10 appearance in the UK since 'Do What You Want' with R Kelly got to #9 in 2013! :)
You're welcome! I still post UK chart highlights & full track reviews of the new Top 40 arrivals almost every week. Did you get a chance of check out any of the songs here that haven't charted in the US?

J

Jstar

Well it is a big holiday. But it still isn't that large compared to other days. I assume the article will still post tomorrow.

Well last time I checked it was number 1 in sales and basically top 10 on Spotify. So that is why I am fairly certain Shallow will go top 10 next week in the U.K. I have heard a few songs bigger in the U.K then the U.S recently. Some are Promises, Be Alright and High Hopes.

Piran

Oh yeah, I saw that it finally hit #1 on iTunes. If it gets good YouTube & Apple Music numbers throughout the week, it might have a shot at the Top 5! Like I said in my review, 'A Star Is Born' should easily be the best selling album of the week & it could allow Lady Gaga to get a couple more songs inside the Top 40 in the next chart too.
Oh cool, what do you think of those other songs then? :)

J

Jstar

Hey Piran I'm back. Well yeah that will be great for Gaga to score a number 1 album in the U.K. Promises would probably be the best of those 3.

Oh cool, I bet you're happy that it's #1 then! :)
Also, I just posted the new BB200's Top 10 at the top of the current Hot 100, since none of us can comment on the new article itself.

With the midweek update, and with the fact that 'Funky Friday' is still at #1 on both Spotify and Apple Music, I think Dave may just manage to get a #1 debut, which would be absolutely insane. The last #1 debut came from Drake with 'Nice For What' back in April, so the fact that a track by 2 artists without any Top 10 hits and a combined total of just 4 Top 40 hits is a huge contender to be the next #1 debut is incredible. I still have no idea what caused 'Funky Friday's massive success, but I'm definitely not complaining! The only thing that may hold him back is the sub-par sales, but I think its lead on streaming will be enough to offset the inferior sales. It did also take a huge climb in sales today, going from somewhere below #30 on iTunes with 10% of the sales of 'Shallow', to now being at #8 with 44% of the sales.
'YSIV' managed to debut at #2 in the US, at least, and considering it was competing with 'Tha Carter V' that's still very impressive. I think 'A Star Is Born' will most likely be #1 this week here, with 'Trench' close behind.
I doubt that 'Without Me' will debut at #19 like it did in the midweek update, but Top 40 seems inevitable. It's climbing on Spotify and Apple Music now and is stable on iTunes, so I think it could eventually reach Top 20. 'Taki Taki' seems to have stabilised between #22 and #24 on Spotify now, but it's down in the 80s on both iTunes and Apple Music which will hurt its performance. Given that it's #1 worldwide on Spotify by a decent margin, though, I can still see it reaching Top 10 in the UK eventually.
I haven't heard of 'Consequences' being Camila's next single, but she has said that it's her favourite song to perform live so I would not be surprised at all. I would've much preferred 'She Loves Control', given that it's my favourite song from 'Camila' while 'Consequences' is my least favourite, and I think 'She Loves Control' would've performed better chart-wise, but I do still like 'Consequences'.

Regarding 'Funky Friday', it took a little dip on Spotify down to #4 there yesterday. It's got the top spot there again now, but only barely. Despite it quadrupling on sales today, I still think 'Promises' will have a slight edge, but it'll closer than expected.
If 'Funky Friday' did hit #1, then I think it would be the first grime #1 since 'Heatwave' in 2012... I can't think of any others. It would also be two "Friday" #1s in 2018, as Lil Dicky & Chris Brown had 'Freaky Friday' at the top earlier in the year too. Ironically, 'Funky Friday' was actually released on a Thursday, haha!
What really surprised me is that Logic didn't chart any songs from 'YSIV' on the Hot 100 this week, yet Lil Wayne had a record-tying 22 songs from 'Tha Carter V' charting there this week!
I know 'Consequences' is being sent to radio, at least definitely in the US & she's been speaking so much about it on Twitter even though she's mentioned very little about 'She Loves Control'. The fact that it's widely rumoured that she'll perform it at the AMAs (which are on right now) gives me a firm belief that it'll be the next single.

Today 'Funky Friday' has a lead of around 60,000 streams over 'Promises' on Spotify (483k vs 423k), and 30,000 over 'Happier' (453k), and it's still at #1 on Apple Music, so I think that if it can maintain this lead for the remaining 2 days of the week it'll debut at #1 with a narrow lead, but if it drops down again I think it'll debut at #2, while 'Promises' or possibly even 'Happier' will have a narrow lead.
Even though it was released on a Thursday, it'll definitely be a funky Friday if it manages a #1 debut, being the first #1 debut since Drake in April and the first grime #1 since 2012, and from 2 artists who've never had a major chart hit to date as well!
I think the reason for the difference between 'YSIV' and 'Tha Carter V' on the Hot 100 is mainly because of the difference in streams between the 2 albums. 'YSIV' got 122,000 of its 167,000 units from sales, and only 42,000 from streams (57.9m streams), while 'Tha Carter V' got 141,000 of its 480,000 units from sales and a whopping 325,000 from streams (433m streams). Obviously the streams of the album tracks will count towards the Hot 100 as well, while the album sales won't.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that 'Consequences' will be Camila's next single now as well. I hope that it can do well, but I do still think that 'She Loves Control' would've done better chart-wise. Maybe she's saving that to be the last single from the album early next year?
